Ok well, I don't use the same moniker in games, it's a "security matter"...specially round these parts. image image

I'll just send ya a PM or something later.

In game, everything looks bad, really bad.

Five years ago, games that looked 100% better than this were being slated for the crap graphics.

Yes, they have made a really good sandbox MMO, the system's working behind the graphics are awesome, but it is really hard to notice it when confronted with the garbage that are the visuals of this MMO.

In all honesty, if you do not care what the game looks like and you want a sandbox, great, this game is for you, if you want a sandbox with decent graphics, forget it.

Yep them graphics really look like crap..  lol

Yes, I also think, that the graphics are quite ok. I expected them being worse, but I was surprised in a positive way.

    2) What are the pros/cons of Xsyon as you see them?

    3) How much potential do you see with Xsyon?

    4) Anything you'd like to add.

    1)  6 months to a year which is long considering the longest I have lasted in game since UO/DAoC is about 2-3 months.

2)Pros - you are your own boss.   lots of room for growth. . social or solo. . both different games but viable.  The crafting and skills, great community so far.

Cons - at first the graphics but I didn't even notice them after about 10 minutes, small dev company could mean slower development (pace might be too slow to keep people interested)  combat is pretty weak at the moment.

    3)  Huge amounts.  The game is a true sandbox.  They could make 10 spin off games with the base model. . ie.  they could make a medieval themed game. . future themed etc.

    4)  I logged in last night just to check it out. . I played for 5 hours straight. . I logged into Rift and played for about 2 hours on the last stress test. . and I wanted to log out after 20 minutes. . games like MO, Darkfall etc. have spoiled me with freedom and this game hands you even more.

I would not run out and suggest it to everyone but if you want to play a game where you truly build from the ground up to survive. . it is a pretty cool experience. . considering the preorder comes with 2 months and a 2 week headstart i would try it out.  If you are on the fence you are likley looking for something new like I was.  For me this is it.

Thank you for this, and you're right. I've been looking for something "new" for years as I was spoiled growing up with UO, SWG etc. I kept trying to talk myself out of buying this game but I couldn't, it kept calling me. And like you, I couldn't stomach logging into Rift 15 minutes into beta 2 after playing all of beta 1. There's just something missing from games like that, they're just so shallow and meaningless. It's been so frustrating year after year of the same kinds of games. Some are ok for awhile but in the end it's just the same junk.

I really hope this game does well because I want to see more successful sandbox games in the future. I shudder to think we're running out of developers who even remember the history of MMOs, let alone who can reintroduce the glory days of MMOs.

When I played UO for the first time, I was completely enamored with it. I often dreamed of how awesome MMOs would be ten, twenty years down the road. Well, I think the MMO market has made a wrong turn along the way and I'd like to see it get back on course.

Just build the world and leave the rest to us. image

This is a pretty long thread, so the only thing I would say is watch Saintbob's tutorial videos. If you like them, you will buy the game. If you hate them, the game is not for you.

Ok so, I'll try to be as concise as possible because there are longer reviews in this forum so I'll just hit on the highlights and lowlights of my first night.

First of all, the download was faster than I thought it was going to be, it was around an hour. Not bad at all.

Character creation was ok, nothing spectacular and nothing horrible. It's ok. I would love to see more options but it's not a huge stickler for me. I do like the height/weight options, that's pretty cool. I would like to see sliders added though, not just for character creation but for other things as well.

The UI is ok, not horrible and not spectacular. With the help of Bob's tutorials I was off and running right away. One thing I hope they add is a UI save feature as far as what boxes are open and where they're placed. It would be nice if they loaded where you left them.

The graphics are also ok, nothing horrible or spectacular. I really liked the environmental effects although they need to work on timing with weather changes. The snow just kind of started up instantaneously and ended the same. The storms did roll in however which was cool. It's kind of cool to see campfires off in the distance and wondering if you should check it out or not. You never know lol. I had my graphics almost maxed and it ran pretty smoothly. I'm thinking they'll upgrade some of the graphics in the future but it's not a huge deal for me, I can get used to them.

Animations were varied some were very good while others need work. The trees swayed a little too much but some of the character animations were very nice, very realistic. I like it when you stand there and your character will look around, move etc.

The sound was ok but could use some improvement. It reminded me a little of Darkfall but not even close to that bad. The only sound that really bugged me was walking on snow. I'd also like to see more random sounds like chirping birds etc.

I didn't get to craft yet, only fish. Fishing was pretty cool and of course crafting is top notch in this game. I was just too busy roaming around checking out the areas looking for a place to settle down.

During my travels I was reminded of UO and SWG, especially SWG. Fishing by the water and hearing it rush by was awesome. I saw many people building structures, harvesting, going about their business. Good stuff.

From what I can tell, the community is going to be outstanding, everyone seemed very helpful.

    So here's the bottom line:

Who should try Xsyon - If you are old school and loved UO, SWG, or other sandbox games, you owe it to yourself to at least consider trying this game out. $40 for two months (plus 2-week head start) is a good deal and time enough to decide if you like it or not. If you don't like it or it's not really your thing, at least you supported the sandbox industry a bit which can't be a bad thing. Although the game is a bit rough right now, it has massive potential. I know, I know, you've heard that before, and so have I. We can't predict the future of any game but the lead designer created this game out of love for the genre, not out of a love for money. I see good things happening for Xsyon in the future.

Who should NOT try Xsyon - If you are into themeparks only, this game is not for you. If you expect everything to be handed to you, this game is not for you. If you have to have leet graphics in a game, this game is not for you. If you have a hard time figuring out how to play games on your own, this game is not for you. You get the idea.

So anyway, I'm looking forward to playing more and learning the ropes. I'm eagerly anticipating launch so I can play for keeps. I intend to play this game for some time to come, it's pretty fun. I think after launch when relationships are formed, trade routes created, and society takes hold, this game is going to be insanely fun. Let alone when tribe wars kick in.

Good luck and have fun all, I hope to see all you fence-sitters in game.

P.S. So much for concise lol, sorry for the wall crit. image

    1. If I play the game.  I would play for several years barring something better coming out.

    2. Hype.  Overpromised features and a release date that were not feasible already.  Sounds great but didn't happen.  Why even do that other than to sell pre-orders? Makes them look like amateur devs at best if not cons at worst.

    3. If they could deliver on all they first promised they would take the market.   The graphics on what I have seen though were not at all impressive.  That matters to a percentage of people.

    4. I would not pay anything for this game until it is out for a few months.   At that point if enough people seem to like it I may try it.  They have done to much to make me  suspicious.

Based on your points (2) and (3) I think you wouldn't be happy with this game. I hope you find what you're looking for. Good luck!

You must have completely missed my OP with the "those of you who are playing or have played the game" statement. Why?

    Whatever.

Ok so, I'm on day two now and was able to game tonight with my friend. We traveled very far looking for the prime location to hunker down after launch, and we finally found an awesome location! Oh man the views!

On the way there we encountered a few "rodents" including racoons, bears, and wolves. We managed to fight them off and even skinned a few for crafting. After finally testing out the combat I can say that it's lackluster but not all that bad really. It just needs tweaking. It's enough to keep my attention while they work on the overhaul.

There are some crashes that I've had yesterday and today and all seem to be related. I've sent them the reports and it seems others have been having the same issue since the latest patch. Hopefully, that will be taken care of soon.

Other than that, I fear that I may be in the process of being sucked into this game. I hardly notice the issues I had before with graphics, all I see now is a wonderful playground of a world waiting for me to explore. I'm looking forward to crafting more (I made a couple of baskets earlier) and establishing our camp to a sustainable level.

Good luck and have fun everyone! image

I'm in the same boat. Day 2 for me, probably 8 hours in now. As I got the hang of things, I loaded up on fish and started treking around just exploring. Ran into some raccoons, killed them and got what materials I could off them, some bone, a head, some paws, etc... anything I had the tools to strip them of.

Found some nice folks and made my way to their tribal lands, got lost, got attacked by a bear, barely beat it, got unlost. Thankfully we have Lake Tahoe as a landmark, becuase there's not much else to go on and I love that!

Finally found their tribe lands and they accepted me in, showed me around, and then the game changed for me. I thought I was loving the game, but I had no idea. My eyes were suddenly opened. I just stood there and watched in awe as this community operated around me. I felt like I was in the middle of little house on the prarie, and it was amazing. People taking stuff from baskets as they needed it. People delivering stuff to baskets to replenish them. Fires abound. People fishing, building huts and tepees. Huge sand huts. Bridges. Trenches. People coming and going with logs and rocks. People making bricks. People sharing armor and tools. I watched as people came and people went, over and over... and then I just sort of silently started to follow suit. I peeked into a couple of projects, saw what they were in need of, and off I went for some grass, and some tree cutting, log hauling, fishing and filling baskets with food for the tribe, borrowing some materials from other baskets to raise some crafting, and adding newly crafted weapons back to the baskets for others to grab from. I suited up with armor, it's been cold out there! And it all felt perfect to me.

Like you, I suddenly was completely unaware of the graphical limitations, my imagination must have kicked in and dotted the i's and crossed the t's, because I was suddenly in this living, breathing world... this land of the lost... and it felt, and feels absolutely wonderful.

Last night after my first play session, i really liked Xsyon. Tonight, I love it... and I feel like I am really a part of it.

I can not wait until this wipes and we can go at this for keeps. This game has more soul than most of the rest of the industry combined imo. For some that's not enough, but for me... well... I need to get back to my tribe :)

We're still discussing if we want to join a Tribe at start or not. There's something magical in Xsyon about living in the back woods, doing some fishing and hunting and relying on local traders for wares. I dunno, I'm torn. The peace and quiet at our Tribal area is so nice but then again, we have to work a lot harder to accomplish things.

Gotta love it man. I too can't wait til the 18th. image

Well, I don't know where you've set up your camp, but if you want to visit Hopi to chat or trade, just stop by.

We're in 896 Pm me for coords if you want. Maybe you'll find good spot for camp near us. You'll have someone to trade with and protection if you'll need it.

That I did. Awesome bunch of folks :)

I agree, all playstyles are really appealing to me in this game. The backwoods things sounds awesome too. No matter what though, I would check out Hopi as a possibly ally, they are great!

We're not too far from you guys, perhaps a 15 minute run. I think I ran past your camp the other day, it was a fairly large camp if I remember correctly.

Maybe I'll drop in and see if we can do some trading, I'm in need of Cloth scraps and we're unable to locate a junk pile anywhere near our area. If you guys have Cloth scraps for trade, please let me know what you need and I'll try go dig some up. I started scavenging earlier and I can see that might be profitable. My second attempt revealed a crafting recipe (lol so lucky) and I also found some metal bolts. I'm sure you guys have all the bases covered but perhaps your thriving Tribe needs something in trade.

    Day 3 Update:

Ok so, my friend and I decided to abandon our Twin Falls camp and head out for the Hopi camp to check it out at the request of Yoori and Mith. It took us about 20 minutes to get there after packing up and disbanding our old Tribe area. We took our tools and what supplies we thought we'd need but left anything that would slow us down, we didn't want to be heavy in case we were attacked.

We finally made it to the Hopi camp and it was amazing, they had obviously been very busy. They were very generous with their time and met us at the totem and invited us to join the Tribe. We got settled in after looking around and putting our supplies in storage so we set off to fish and scaveng a bit. A few members were sparring and testing out weapons when we heard a distress call.

One of the Tribe members had been killed by several rival Tribe members. Everyone jumped to action and rushed off to his aid. It was a pretty good battle for about a half hour, we ended up killing several of their members before they left the area. It was very encouraging to see how quickly Hopi could spring into action when defense calls are made.

Here's the bottom line. If you want to keep any semblence of a real life, stay away from this game. After having a few doubts about purchasing this game several days ago, I am now fully hooked. I'm sure I'll be having dreams about the game soon enough. No joke. This is one of those sandbox games that although it's still rough around the edges it will grab you and suck you right in.

    Heh, what a blast.

Te best part is realising everything is not even in game yet and its still amazing. :)

My friend and i also joined Hopi 2 days ago and really glad we did. While we are very resourceful our selves being in a group definately has its benifits.

This game wont be fore everyone,if you want a themepark type game, you wont find it here. This is a true sandbox. All items are created by players, from clothes to weapons and everything in between.

One downfall i see is none of the buildings we built have actual uses yet. Once thats taken care of this game is really going to rock.

I just have to say i'm really glad i shelled out the 40 bucks for this game.

    played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek
and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.
