Lol. Anyone else notice that the majority of the "canceling" posts in this thread are from people that have been posting negatively on the forum the entire time? Yeah... I believe you guys pre-ordered lol!!!!!!
Actually I did, pre order. Funny there some that raved about it and are cancelling, seeing the light I guess.
I pre-ordered after beta 5, but canceled after beta 6.
I canceled because of the poor melee combat. It is just too weak and boring, you don't feel that you are hitting anything, there is no impact. They should look at Lineage 2, GW, Aion, Tera, etc... to see how combat should be done. Essentialy, they need to remake the sounds and the hitting effects so that you "feel" an impact when you hit steel.
Everything else is great, the world is beautiful and very polished. Unfortunately combat is 90% of the game, so if the major part of the game is poorly done the other 10% won't save it.
I am cancelling my preorder. I have been in the game since beta 1, but after last beta I was totally bored with the combat, quests and rifts. It was like this with the Aion beta test also, it was something new, that slowly grew repetitive and boring after awhile. Then again, I love sandbox games more then the themepark type.
It was a very smooth running beta compared to some I have been in, and I am sure this game will succeed with it's targeted audience.
I had fun in all betas so I'm keeping mine. The graphics are adequate, the game play is good and I like they are not including WoW like arenas to turn it into an E-Sport game.
I'm not the type that want photo realistic graphics that requires me to run quad sli to get medium FPS just so I can brag about it on forums nor am i looking for a world i can "live" in. I log in for 2-6 hours a couple times a week so I don't need a whole lot to be entertained.
Anyway, after this wall of text you can point out that I am not a developer, nor am I an investor. So what do I know? I'll tell you what I know, every title loses players consistently. WoW is arguably the only title (outside of some Asian titles like Perfect World), that has its ups and downs in population. In other words, mmorpgs have been failing one after the other, and yet, they all make the same mistakes. Terrible pvp concepts, limited class race connectivism, silly or meaningless lore, forgetting the importance of class archetypes, etc. So why not do something different for once, or go back to what we know works. Dark Age of Camelot is my personal example, and those who played it in its glory days will attest that (a) Warhammer is crap (b) Dark Age had the best pvp class culture race combination ever.
I agree with you on several points throughout your post. Tthough I personally prefer a system with no pre-defined factions/sides; one that's completely player-driven and dynamic and lets players decide who their allies and enemies are... and allows those associations to change depending on how the political winds are blowing...
This last paragraph, though, definitely rings a bell. I wouldn't use the word "terrible" as that's getting into the realm of subjectivity and no one can be told they're "wrong" for what they like or don't like... however much I might agree or disagree with their preferences.
I will say that it's true how developers just keep repeating the same approach. Yes, they add a different twist here and there, but ultimately it's the same game underneath. There is merit to using what works and "not fixing what isn't broken". Absolutely. But I do think developers are taking it too far in a number of newer MMOs.
The beauty of the more old-school MMOs (DAoC, EQ1, AC1, Eve, Anarchy Online... and others from that period) is that they were each a unique experience. Every one of them feels like a different game. AC1 does not "feel" like EQ1, which did not "feel" like DAoC, and so forth... Unique elements were pervasive in every aspect of each game. The developers were either striving to make something unique, or were simply creating what they believed would be fun for their players, and each ended up with unique results. Yes, there was overlap. Yes some elements were borrowed from other games. But ultimately, they were still very much their own unique experience.
Nowadays, developers are clearly using WoW as their "road-map"... almost like it's used as some kind of "meta design document" they're going by. The rule of thumb seems to be: "As long as it's similar to, or not too different from WoW, it's good".
These developers are certainly (still) trying to ride Blizzard's coat-tails and are (still) not quite realizing that they're not going to get a population anywhere near Blizzard's by trying to copy the "WoW Model". How many developers have tried now? I lost count a while ago. I liken it to the developers being lemmings chasing each other off the same cliff.
As long as these people are in love with the idea that Blizzard is making ridiculous sums of revenue off WoW, and so long as $$$ means more to them than providing a unique experience to their players... I think we're going to continue to see more lemmings launching off that cliff.
It's been said that the people making the decisions aren't gamers; that they're just "number crunchers" who look only at the bottom line. While I can't say that definitively (I don't know any of them personally), I don't find that notion at all difficult to believe.

The game has enormous potential and the devs have proper heads on their shoulders. For once I feel like I'm buying an MMO that has properly exited the beta stages.
I had been considering pre ordering but after playing the beta I've decided to pass. That doesn't mean I won't buy and play the game in the future but I don't think it's worth the asking price right now.
I preordered before beta, and since beta i will be keeping my preorder. Im not head over heels in love with the game- there are some things i like and some i dont , but over all i think the game will be fun. Theres alot of different ways to progress which will keep me busy for awhile.
The biggest reason why i will be keeping my preorder is there just isnt much else left to play. Im one of those folks not really playing any mmo's atm the moment cuz i have played them all and have gotten a lil bored.
Rift will be a breath of fresh air at least for a lil while, i truly feel i will get my monies worth out of it but i dont think i will be playing it for years to come, like i did with EQ and others have done with WOW.
I think the game will be what you make it. My beta exp showed me a different approach/mindset to this game will make it fun so thats what i will do. I will make it fun and thats what it will be.

Same here. Trion even charges a price higher than previous so called AAA titles, which is 49,99Eur = $67 for the standard DDL version.
While the game is well done in general, for me it is the first game ever that is old and stale even before it's released. Read: When you copy THAT much of other games, on the other hand you also add up alot of the things players were already tired of for years.
Trion has shown that they don't dare to leave the beaten path with only the tip of their shoe. They did everything to not confuse the players with innovation or evolution and and i believe that this also counts for Rift's endgame (which so far Trion is very closed about for good reason).
Keeping. Their customer support is awesome, the OBVIOUSLY listen to their players and make changes accordingly. Game is fun and WHILE it's VERY themepark, it has a LOT of customization that makes up for it. Can't wait to actually play PvP on this. I'm a convert!
Edit: It also helps that I got 20% off the collectors ed. on D2D :-)
I, sadly, ordered the Digital CE from trion so i can not cancel my preorder, Dam you jazmine from gamebreaker.tv. If i could I would.
Why, first off the game isnt that bad, but its also not that great. When I see a person, jazmine, get so excited for a game that is to me is so average, then it makes me wonder.
right off the bat the graphics arent that great to me, dont have the best vid card, but i activly play wow, eq2, lotro, allods, and the graphics in those games are much bettter at max settings then max settings in rift.
questing, rifts, invasions, are ok, get real bored about mid 25's, last beta i had all four callings in the mid to high 20's, dont pvp, have pvp with a passion.
Though, still the one thing that still keeps me interested in the game is the amount of the npc models and how well i think they did them. and the enviroment is really well done also. Should at least keep me interested until my free month runs out. I of course dont plan to resub,
so tell me what your plans are, be specific, not dudz, the game is phatz, no trolz ples,
You can cancel your pre-order. Just call Trion customer support.
Two CE's pre-ordered here with out an inkling of regret! In fact, I made sure to get beta keys for family and friends who had not heared or considered Rift and so far five have pre-odered! I have already joined a guild and am ready for Headstart to commence.

1 thing i'd want from EQ2 graphical wise would be the physics on the robes. Little things matter both in graphics and gameplay and thats one thing RIFT falls short on for me. (Can't see why OP has listed WoW as better graphics? Art style perhaps but texture wise its just miles behind the scene)
As for me, I'm getting the game, CE pre-ordered but it is mainly a place holder until TOR is released.
I was one step away from preordering...decided to hold back before beta 6 had started.
Now im for sure waiting a full month after launch.
No ones tested endgame yet....no beta is shceduled to cover it....isnt that kind of important? Dont they want feedback on any of it? Its curious ...
That and the upcomming major class rebalancings OR no rebalancing and broken endgame pvp mechanics due to it. This part is going to be the brutal part, the rebalancing. It may cause the typical forst month exodus as well...its serious too, not just a little tweaking...

Your information is incorrect. While Open Beta will not be testing endgame, there is a HUGE population (huge being relative) testing all the end game content. The idea being that Rift does NOT want people in Beta to see what they have in store for end game. Frankly I can completely agree with this.
Unfortunately, the Alpha testers who have access to end-game are still under the NDA but considering how Trion is reacting to things the community has been loud about, I don't think you have things to worry about.
I will say that if you preorder you will get about a week and change EARLY ACCESS. This is HUGE for a PvP server but that's just MY opinion. Do what ye will.
My gf and I are keeping it. Skipped beta 6 and will skip open beta to keep content fresh. Can't say anything bad about the game until I see how end game is. If I wanted a wow clone I would've played Runes of Magic.

I ordered the ce from trion and will be there day 1 no regrets
Is it totally original? no but then nothing out there is
For me it takes the good ideas from a mix of games and does it in one game and so far done it well

I was lucky enough to be in beta from the start but have not played since beta 3 as i still want some suprises early on rather than spending the first week redoing everything
My only problem is that my current game sub runs out on 19th, so what can i do until early access open?
Just for the record, Trion never stated that this would be a totally new and unique game. They aim to combine " the best of online, gaming, and traditional media to revolutionize the way connected games are designed, developed, and delivered."
So yes, they looked closely to other MMO's and what works and doesn't, and combined those elements with an unique class system, dynamic content and great graffics amongst other things in a very smooth running and high quality MMO. I canceled the pre-order because I got tired of the game itself. The Rifts are too similar and the questing very boring.
I'm lucky Trion put the money back on my bank account, I did threaten with a chargeback though oO.
Oh well, I will remember not to pre-order games anymore.
to similar? what level did you get to? ive seen death, fire, earth, wind, life, undead, water, and thats not even all of them. the wind rifts are beautiful to see, and kill you instantly
I got to level 33. I did not mean the looks, they look different.
But, the Rift is always the same thing. Kill 6, kill another 6..etc. The rift pop up in the same locations all the time too, you will notice it after a while. Gets really boring.

Both my wife and I are keeping our CE preorders.
The game has enormous potential and the devs have proper heads on their shoulders. For once I feel like I'm buying an MMO that has properly exited the beta stages.
.. But in a good way.
I wanted to make pre order at the first time this option came out, but with more bates I'm not so sure, so I guess I'll better look after release.
try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2

in 2.5 played time ? is that 2,5 hour ?
if so you a huge lier !!!
what to do after level 35 ? get to 50 at lunch and do the endgame like all other mmo´s ?
you write like it was a single player game you have been played
sorry to call you a lier if i misunderstood that point with hour or what the 2,5 stand for
I got to level 33. I did not mean the looks, they look different.
