Okey Im going to list 15 things that will make you diffrent enought to not be a WoW clone. You dont even have to Implement all 15 to be diffrent.... and I could probably make up 100 more given time and effort. There are alot of things that havent been explored but Im holding my best Ideas for myself..
1: NO Classes
2: Skill based, either training over time or by doing things in game, like choping monster with your sword will make you better at using your sword.
3: RTS game play, make you be able to a squad and controll them from afar like a regualar RTS game.. Why not who says you cant?
4: FPS game play, you can hack with your sword like in Oblivion or shoot people with guns, Why not I think it might be cool and some have tried it like Mortal online.
5: Crafting, WoW dosent have crafting.. it has some mini game you can play with but it has no serious crafting. If you want to be A blacksmith and own your shop in town and sell your Master crafted sword that is as good as any Raid gear.. That is the type of crafting im talking about. PLAYERS CAN MAKE AS GOOD A GEAR AS ANY DROP FROM AN NPC.
6: Actions have meaning... Like In a game like Fable.. do evil deads and become evil do good dead and become good. The game world changes if you are Evil you might not be able to go into towns anymore etc..
7: Full Loot, if you get defeated others can take your stuff... Its harsh but makes for much more meaningfull gameplay..
8: Death penelties, lose levels, lose skills get scared etc. Death has to have meaning or the point of wining becomes meaningless and pointless.
9: Game World can be effected by the players. Build your own Tavern betwen to citys and have players come visit and eat(food should be something you need for this to work) Build your own Town with your fellow players that can be attacked. Control your own kingdom, set the Tax, Hire city guards, defend it against Rival groups of players etc etc...
10: Open World PVP... No Instance bullshit.. Make people fight one another in an open game world were anything can happen.
11: Have more then 2 Fractions....
12: No Race restrictions on what class you can play.. and if you have no classes this becomes an none Issue
13: No levels, you dont need levles in an MMO that is just something that developers chose as a means to show progression.
14: Guild/group dependent gameplay. If you want to Solo you should play a single player game... MMOS are about Interacting with others...From level 1.. or from your frist steps in the game..
15: Explore diffrent sencarios.. BOATS, AIRPLANES, SPACE travel, Underwater worlds, Ailen worlds (dune) and WUXIA for example. In the end this is just diffrent skins but a good skin with a good backstory can Grab hold of people and suck them into your game world.
In the end I would like to say that an MMO is only as good as its player base. New developers really need to explore this more, We are all part of the world they have created why not give us the tools to change it???

Add a photo-realistic graphics engine and we have the STAR TREK HOLODECK! :P

I would totally forgive a dev team from making a DAOC clone.
I would totally forgive someone who would clone Vanguard. If they add good PvP and some more sandbox elements, such as castle sieges, that would be even sweeter.
All WoW did was bring the graphics up to 2004 standards and polish movement to make combat more fluid, shiny up a few other things that were already done in EQ and EQ2 and blammo....you have WoW. WoW is more a clone itself than it is cloned by others.
Uh, WoW did anything but "bring the graphics up to 2004 standards".
WoW had low hardware requirements, even back when it was released.
I am curious, people throw this term around so often that the term seems to mean anything remotly EQ1&2/WoW like.
A game where it's clear that WoW's existence had a heavy impact on development, and when developers asked themselves "what should we do for X feature" the default answer was "make it like WoW."
[...] What are WoW Haters looking for in their MMORPGs? A FPS. [...]
LOLWUT ?
SOE didn't pull the Combat Upgrade (CU) out of a hat, it cam from player demand off the forums. And if you are unfamiliar with what the CU was allow me to explain. SWG Pre-NGE/CU had RPG combat just like WoW. With the CU they implemented a FPS style of combat, again as demanded by the users off the forum. I've seen this thrend across games for the past 20 years of forum lerking.

I could be wrong, but outside the UI I take to mean "No-Button Mashing". Again I take this to mean Point and Shoot (FPS). When people complain about the WoW graphics and ask them to be upgraded to 2004 standards they mean 2004 FPS standards. This is where you stop LoLing, and instead switch to saying {XXXX} that {XXXX} knows what they is talking about. But I wont hold my breath.
Oh, BTW the record shows that MMOFPS/rpgs (RPGs that use a FPS combat system) don't do well. I Luv'ed my time in Planet Side, and look forward to Planet Side 2. When ever I read a forum post that calls for FPS overhaul of an RPG I tell them to go try Planet Side. But that often leads to closed and deleted threads.

Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven Boy: Why can't I talk to Him? Mom: We don't talk to Priests. As if it could exist, without being payed for. F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Even telemarketers wouldn't think that. It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.
Don't employ an addictive loot table drop system (#1 reason for WoWs success).
Don't work diligently to produce a quality product (#2 reason for WoWs success).
Don't appeal to a mature audience (majority of WoW players are 25-35, not 12 year olds).
Don't provide a visually appealing and high contrast graphics style (Award Winning).
Don't utilize a character movment system and UI offten called as smooth as Ice. (#3 reason for WoWs success).
Don't write an intelligent and funny quest and story line (#4 reason for WoWs success).
To those who insist I am a fanboi, I haven't played WoW for 3 years. I recognize the brilliance of the technology.
BTW an example of a game that could meet the above criteria, was called Tabula Rasa. And it is not alone.

How a term is used is up to the individual and his/her opinion.
/facepalm. It is necessary for communication that words have a agreed upon meanings. As an example try getting directions from someone who uses the term left when most people would use right because in their opinion left would be correct.
Not really.
Some terms are subjective.
I see a 2m long string and I say 'it is a long string'. A guy next door can say 'it is a short string'.
Case in point, there is not clear agreement so how you term it is up to the individual.

Ah, but both folks know what the terms long and short mean, they just vary in their opinion of whether or not the string is one or the either. Same thing with the term WOW-Clone, pretty much everyone who visits these forums understands the intent in which its used, and concepts it represents, they just disagree whether a particular game really is more or less of a WOW clone.

i always frowned upon anyone using the "WoW clone" label. Excuse me if Im beating a dead horse here but the old arguments of "EQ clone" or "WoW is a clone too" are quite spot on.
but then....Alganon released and I have to tell you guys, that was a friking clone. Sorry if I stepped on the other side of the fence, but that same dog even had a very similar collar....
and Im getting the same vibe with Rift, sure it adds some new concepts over WOW, but they are not original to start with, and the similarities are just...overwhelming. It feels looks and plays like WoW in nearly 99% of the cases.
guess what I mean is that "WoW clone" is a largely missused term, and people are just too quick to jump the gun and call that to any medieval fantasy themepark...but sometimes.....when looking at games like Alganon or Rift......WoW clone is the only definition that fits the bill.
Here a game have to be pretty different. Somewhere between TOR (who many posts call Wow clone) and GW2 (Never heard it mentioned as one except possibly by Robertdinh).
More different then Wow was from EQ at launch at least.
