You would think some of you people haven't been in any betas lately. Which I know from the posters isn't true so really more a need to be overly dramatic than anything else.
These are the same pricks you run across in the majority of the betas anymore. Nothing really new going on here. Would be nice if they would vanish but they're here to stay. Not sure why it would get under your skin now.
The assumption that the terrible community is just beta freeriders being jerks, and that they will all be gone come launch, does that also make you assume a majority of the preorder crowd is waiting this beta out?
Because if not, and this assumption is true, then there isnt going to be a whole lot of players come launch...
Please, this has happened every time as of late when the game open up the doors to players to stress test. It doesn't say anything except that when people don't have any type of investment in a product and can hide behind anonymity they're more prone to act like a dick. Doesn't take many players to clutter up chat and bring the whole channel down as a whole.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Ever thought that maybe it was just the server you are on? I rarely see anything like that on the server I play on. I really don't understand how this alone would result in quitting a game. This type of immature behavior is in EVERY game, and to blame the game itself for people's behavior is just childish IMO. Grow up, and learn to deal with it. Most of it will go away once the game goes live. Leave chat channels if it bothers you so much, join a guild and only have discussions with them... there's many things you can do to alleviate your problem.
Giving credit where credit is due, Trion's marketing department is very much to blame for the state of the community. You release a commercial which deliberately tweaks Blizzard's nose, then compound the error by hosting an open beta for anyone who signs up. The logic here baffles me. Maybe (and it's a big maybe) some of the fans of the other game will try yours and pick up on it, if you've got a good product to show them. But, in all fairness, Rift isn't all that special. People have listed the reasons why not repeatedly and have been shouted down violently by the apologists for their trouble.
The simple truth is, color it any shade you want, the Rift community is of Trion's making and they bear the full responsibility for it. To me it's just further evidence that the Rift team has no idea what they're doing or where they're going.
Funny post... Rift is nothing special other then it's a better game in beta then Launched games like WAR, AoC, Aion, WoW, LotRO.
But yes besides that it's just an ordinary MMORPG...
The kids will be gone soon and we will be back to normal again after open beta, nothing new here it's the same QQ we saw in all the other triple A beta's of the last 4 years and the same QQ we will see in GW2 and SWtOR...

Rift's community has been fantastic. If they're a little tired of trolls and whiners and react harshly... I'll cut them some slack.

This.
The only negativity I've seen on my server has been against obvious trolls. No one wants to log in to play, only to hear the same troll arguements over and over again from people who seem to have too much of their personal identities and self esteem wrapped up into their current game of choice.
It's not all flames either. I've seen polite arguments where the trolls have given up, after finding no fertile ground for their attempts to turn people off to the game.
Obviously, their game of choice can't be so great if they have nothing better to do than bash other games.
Well, off to log in today. Wanted to jump in on at least one thread first, because of the trend off trolls coming out en force while the rest of us are in enjoying beta.
Someone sent you a death threat .Was it a proxy account where you sent it to yourself for attention ? Who would bother really.
Open beta chalk it down to that and just wait tll the game launches and then see how the people playing it are behaving. At this point it is not an indication of anything.

I don't get why some people need to argue about Rift over and over again when they clearly don't like it. Why not just move on? Can't say they're trying to correct the Rift fanbois of what lies they give about the game becuase now it's in open beta and people can see for themselves.
Didn't I and another say that we thought the Rift community was one of the worst we have ever encountered here on these forums? Yes...we did. What were we met with? People telling us that we we haters and trolls. I'll say it again, Rift's community is one of the worst I have ever encountered in any game and that includes WoW.
It's Open Beta and it's the WoW community En Force at Rift now.
After launch it will be different. At least I hope so. That these WoW kids will be done and back to their precious (WoW).
Pretty much all Open Beta's are crap tho. It's free. So it attracks the worst scum of the internet. Always has been.
But at launch people will have to start paying. Then it will (hopefully) settle down a bit.
It just kind of shows that WoW is on it's decline and the WoW playerbase getting desperate and restless.
Don't say it's a good thing. It's better that WoW keeps going strong and keeps the scum away from other MMO's.
But yeah.... it's getting a bit tiresome during these free events (open beta and such) and having to deal with bored and frustrated WoW players. /SIGH
Just don't give up yet. See how it goes after launch. Especially after the first month is up.
I think the OP is still raw from dealing with the worst elements of the mmorpg gaming community, not just RIFT imo.
I have written similar posts in the past on the WOW forums after dealing with foul mouthed yobs, but I'm not so raw right now so maybe I can try and be a little more balanced, while still supporting the essence of how the OP is feeling. My feelings then...
1/ There are some extremely vicious, nasty, hateful and hurtful people in mmorpgs. Not just people who occasionally drop the F word, but really vicious screwed up people. Even if you are a thick-skinned person it is depressing to see these people dominate chat channels. And they do dominate our chat channels.
Being facetious or insensitive with the usual cliche comments like "Wake-up lol, it's the internet...", "Doesn't bother me.." (presumably because you are SO strong and the people that complain are SO weak); or "LOL grow a thicker skin, dude..." is just a cop-out and a dereliction of duty to at the very least sympathise with those who think there is something rotten and cancerous in our mmorpg communities.
People who just accept this behaviour are part of the problem so you may as well ignore them if you want some change; seriously, that is the first step as those deniers are more depressing imo than the actual monsters who make chat channels into an open sewer.
2/ The people running the game need to be more robust in their policing of the chat channels. There are many other things they could do but they don't because the people that complain do so usually as isolated individuals, and actually being more robust would require a great deal of effort and some additional investment.
The publishers often think that the easiest solution if you are offended is to switch off the chat channels and indeed this is the easiest solution, but also imo an incredibly bad solution. It punishes those who are more responsible and mature by excluding them from chat channels and, in removing their voice, makes these channels even worse.
It's like telling someone who is getting constant hate-filled abuse from a group of teenagers in his community, "Well, you could just lock yourself in your house and never go outside." It's a ridiculous position to take.
3/ Some people who sympathise with people like the OP may be reticent to support any action because they think that censorship or some kinda "decency police" would be horrible. And indeed it would be horrible. But the point of free speech is that it doesn't mean freedom to spew hate, to bully, and to harass others. Most of us live in societies and work in workplaces that support free speech, but at the same time we don't tolerate hate speech or bullying or harassment. MMORPG communities need this level of maturity as well. So be assured that people like myself hate censorship just as much as you do. We are not talking about people swearing or making the odd risky joke (which is absolutely fine and indeed it would be boring without such banter); no, we are talking about those that use chat channels for the worst excesses of hate, bullying and harassment.
4/ Lastly to the OP. Please don't quit a game you like because of the bad elements in the community that dominate chat channels. Only if mature players stand up to the hate will other mature players gain confidence and see that there are others playing who feel the same the way.
When I am raw I feel like quitting, too. But in my more sober state of mind I realise that quitting is giving in to that hate and letting the haters win.
Didn't I and another say that we thought the Rift community was one of the worst we have ever encountered here on these forums? Yes...we did. What were we met with? I am done with Rift. I really wanted to like the game, it looks great, Trion is putting great effort into it, but today is really the last nail in the coffin...
As many have said before, you're judging the whole game by the open beta and the retards that flock to the servers for a free game. That doesn't make any sense at all...
As long as WOW holds the Kiddies Hands and keeps it simple minded as they Have ( exception new raids that most players wont stick it out, "its tooo hard mommy") and Rift doesnt keep moven to Simplify everything i think it will be a good Core game not HARD core, just simple core.
I agree with your post. But I must point out, people on here can be just as ruthless and rude.
so true.
personally i haven't had a big problem with the community. it was pretty much your average MMO community. the worst of it is the lvl 1-9 channel which consists of your average WoW comparisons and trolling, but nothing game killing. all of my questins were answered in a few seconds with no snarky replies or anything. i seriouly think you guys are just exaggerating...
The game was alright, if not pretty damn cliche. New MMOs really lack innovation. Same good/evil paradigm, same quest popup windows, same monotonous animations. Its like everyone is still trying to squeeze what little bit of fanbase there is left out of WoW and LotrO instead of coming up with their own genuine ideas.

How to troll a new game you are scared of:
1. Troll their main site until they ban you
2. Troll the game until they ban you or it goes P2P
3. Head to their fans sites and make up anything you can or POINT OUT USELESS things to
make people not want to play the game
4. Create several accounts, so it looks like people agree with your exagerrated opinions

The problem isn't just the WoW kids, it's the games themselves. Rift, like WoW, allows someone to be horrible to others and get away with it. You don't need anyone in Rift to level or get gear. You can get it solo and through instanced warfronts and public Rifts, and with the dungeon finder you'll be able to get the best gear without any help.
People don't need help ---------------> they have no reason to be nice.
Rift's community will not be better than WoW's community, because the game mechanics are identical. It will likely be worse because people who were rejected from the WoW community went to the Rift community.
Well, that's my take on it, and I still feel the community was bad when I played the game. People kicked others from group without questions, they called others out in chat, they were very unresponsive. Everyone cal solo in rift.

Speaking from experience? ;-p
Do people really create several accounts to do this? They need a new hobby.

People telling us that we we haters and trolls. I'll say it again, Rift's community is one of the worst I have ever encountered in any game and that includes WoW.
Because the community of a game that is essentially free to play is indicative of what it will resemble on release, when the same kids causing the trouble can't/won't buy the game.
Teala has chosen to respond to bad replies from what I've noticed, and to ignore insightful/intelligent posts. While this is entertaining, choosing to focus on such is likely to worsen your discussion... and your point of view on a community.
Right. I am responsible for the actions of others. I am responsible for the bad community that infest Rift. Did you know that I actually received death threats from the so-called fans of Rift in my e-mail here at MMORPG.com because of what I wrote on my blog. First time I have ever had someone threaten to hunt me down and slit my throat, or as one player said in their e-mail, "I'll run you off the road and make it look like an accident you little &#^#. " I know I should take threats like that with a grain of salt because it is probably just some person PO'd, but in this day and age of the Internet, threats like that can actually be followed through with. So you can go right on defending the games community all you want, I have had my experience with them and it was enough for me.
um, and you reported these people and sought to press charges?
Death threats are not something to be taken lightly.
I didnt recieve death threats, but my Rift forum account had TONS of private email spam from people VERY angry about me pointing out issues with the game during beta, and on the beta forums. I would just post what i found, and leave, no response no egging on anyone, and i would return the next day, with a decent amount of hate mail. MOst were not too bad, just asking me how much blizzard pays me to troll ect....
I think i even got a few private messages from fans loyal to Rift, over my class balance issue posts, on this site.
I really hope, for all the people preorderd with 6months of time purchased up front, that this community settles down and starts acting normal.
I recieved hate email in my rift account, and in my mmorpg account. Trion refused to take action to shut down that thread, that is on trion. However you report somebody here who sends you some hatefull stuff, they get it in the chops.

That is the thread that got me hate, and got her hate, and the thread that was allowed to go 11 pages without moderation.
There are some nasty replies in this thread you posted. In here it would be (thankfully) removed. Did TW moderators trim it at all? There are some insightful replies. But the OP cleverly pulled a strawman by focusing on mounts to destroy her argument, as it happened here with those comments on squirrels.
Not to excuse any bad posts, but anything negative in a game's website right before release is a buzz kill to a lot of fans, and some may react in a bad way. I usually avoid those places in such times, as it becomes too difficult to discuss about anything. I suppose websites like mmorpg.com are a bit better (though sometimes it tends toward negativity) when you want to post about a video-game.
Here is my take on it, ignore who you dislike, Guild Invite who you DO like and done. The community outside of your guild / group of friends can't hurt you.
And as others have stated before, Open Beta is a free for all, can't loose your maxed out toon with all he's epix etc, all that can happen is you is a beta ban...whoopie. Once people have to pay for it and have something to loose, normality will return.

No they did not trim it, in fact the thread is still unlocked fortunalty it got burried but still you can see what happened. It got nastly yes it did, and trion let it continue. However I will say this they do moderate things that are way negative, but in this case they let the dogpile happen. See the double standard.

So, you got a bunch of 'we don't like you tells' and one death threat. That's way too much drama to make out as a whole game's community. Just call the cops for the one guy/gal and be done with it.
If someone got one death threat and a bunch of 'we don't like your crappy views' from Mount and Blade fans, that doesn't mean the whole Mount and Blade community is bad and you know that, so stop saying it's Rift community that's the problem.
Eve (another game you apparently play) has one of the seediest communities around by many MMOer's view. The whole game is built on deception, lying, trickery and outright theft; and that's supposed to be the FUN part. The people playing it REGULARLY for years are just as bad as anyone's 'beta'.
I was in Perpetuum beta and a bunch of EvE people came in from some hated EvE corporations (can't remember the name, but they were immediately recognized) and they started drama and name calling people right away. The "Perpetuum community" was then branded for crap because people coming in beta saw all these Eve people just being flat nasty and using EvE tactics and just thought it was "Perpettum' people.
You know better than this as an adult, so I'm not sure why you're acting like someone many years younger by false branding something.

They need a new hobby.
welcome to your brave new world.
ignorance is the new black plague.
I recieved hate email in my rift account, and in my mmorpg account. Trion refused to take action to shut down that thread, that is on trion. However you report somebody here who sends you some hatefull stuff, they get it in the chops.
heres the thread its been burried a few times
http://forums.riftgame.com/showthread.php?50689-It-s-reviews-like-this-people.-Reviews-like-this.&highlight=teala
"TO MICHAEL!"
If this is the SAME Asmodian Puremallace from the official AION boards, I'd take this advice as gospel, people.
