Is there any sense of awe, wonder, mystery here?

markyturnipmarkyturnip Member UncommonPosts: 837

I played through the starting area in beta, and was struck by - to my mind - the lack of any awe or wonder at a mysterious new world. I guess it was the railway tracks that led me through the zone. There was no sense of being let loose in a surprising new place.

But I don't want to judge from the tutorial. Once you get beyond that, do things open up? Or does it retain the WAR train track feel? (The mood of the game seemed very WAR to me).

In my next MMO, I am looking for a large world to explore... which offers the thrill of cresting a hill and finding a shining city below, or heading off into a remote corner and stumbling across a magnificent series of waterfalls guarded by some unexpected creature.

Does Rift offer any of this, or is it not that game?

I found the zone wide events to be very awe inspiring, and parts of stonefield or the gorge are very majestic. Its true that the game's first 10 lvls are not that impressive, but then awe its a very subjective thing anyway.

You don't have to follow the quest chains, and the first instance (Defiant side) redefines epic.  I can't wait to see the rest of the world being I've never been out of the two starter zones.

The tuturial is SUPPOSE to be on rails. That's what a tuturial is. Would I let my kids just run around anyplace they want as they grow up? No...I have a direct path I want them to follow which allows their world to open up gradually as they grow so they don't get in over their heads.

It's always been my experience that a game is what you make of it. If you make it a gameon rails, then that's what you get. You can make your own quests and rewards, you don't have to follow the ones the devs make. Guilds can do even more of this. Folks can write their own quests and set up their own rewards for their members if they want. Too many people depend on developers for content.

If you havn't found any awe you havn't played much of the game. About 5 minutes out of the starter zone we had a huge invasion where ther was a world raid boss destroying the town. He had 175k health we are all lvl 7, lol. It took about 100 of us to take him down, with many deaths thrown in. So it took no time for me to find awe in this game.

  • vtravivtravi Member UncommonPosts: 400

It is true also that you don't need to any quests, there were so many people on at launch that quests were impossible to do, so I just did rifts and pvp and got lvl 16 with no problem, never feel like a grind, it was just fun as hell

Aye, I found myself at level 8 fighting off a massive invasion with 100s of others and truly felt (first time for me in an MMO) I was part of a war. I actually said out loud "this is epic" and it was, people were dying left right and centre and then flinging themselves back into the fight and trying to turn it around.

There were voice overs during that event that were amusing and (surprisingly) immersive.

I think the lore works really well btw... you are an ascended bought back with many others to a desperate time.

You want to play a new and fresh (perhaps working) version of Vanguard. (?)

Rift is not that game in my experience so far.

For me Rift is a new and fresh version of... WoW.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

There is no awe or very little IMO. One poster mentioned the 'epic' seeming Rift battle with the 175k hp boss. I was involved in one where the boss had nearly 400k hps. It was actually ridiculous as it took a mob of players nearly 20 min. to bring it down. If you are looking for an adventure game, this isn't it. It is a pure combat game like most MMOs but on steroids. The Rifts open up so often that any epic feeling of being involved in some great battle is quickly lost. The super fantastic is common place so that becomes normal very quickly.

Rift isn't a bad game but it is like all the rest. If that is what you like, then you will like Rift.

Same here. There was a fun chaos going on with enemies on all sides and people scrambling to fight them off. Was really fun and reminded me of busy nights in UO's Deceit dungeon or AC's Olthoi Lairs.

One thing people are missing out on in the starter area is that there are many, many books and items you can collect (guardian side at least) that are hidden in buildings, in wagons, etc.  Here are a few examples to get your wonderlust going:

    1) There are 14 books (that I found) in the guardian starter area, 12 talking about some of the classes, 2 about the lore behind where you were

    2) Me and a few friends found this very interesting looking alter that was guarded by a few necormatic summoners.  We decided to get a closer look and took them out.  Upon closer inspection we realized they were summoning a greater demonic spirit and had to fend it off or it would take our soul.  Our reward?  His skin as a piece of leather armor (no joke).

    3) I saved a citizen from a burning building and he gave me his napsack and inside was a good chunk of money and a magical sword.

These are just a few examples of what are available on the guardian side tutorial.  I spent almost two hours in there and it was amazing!  Lots of easter eggs (like Alsbeth... >:) )

There are alots of things hidden in nooks and crannies, puzzles, hidden objects with treasures, mazes under water, acheivements, you name it.

You just have to look around.  I'm very impressed with all of the little lore related things available within just the first 20 levels (it gets much more massive come level 20+).

    Just my two cents.

I dunno, I was looking forward to this , played the beta a little, went into the headstart right from the off - then realised an hour into it that I was sick to death of the whole fantasy spiel.  This is a good game, plenty of effort's gone in and many players will love it, but I personally can't be bothered any more with the whole quest/grind/swap out equipment/quest/grind some more routine - had enough for now anyway. Gone back to Fallen Earth which is actually an unsung gem....

The area past the starter area is quite fun, and the invasions/rifts are quite epic :)

If you have it set in your mind to hate the game you will, as bastionix has illustrated many many many times.  The people that like it are playing the game, so probably less likely to post than the haters.  I would be playing, but I'm stubborn and choosing to stay on the server with a queue lol.

Anyways, have fun, and give it a try :)  Do NOT be fooled by the starter area, it pales compared to the rest of the game.

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

Will you stop already? You really have no shame, do you? Opinion is one thing, but continuing to state falsehood as truth is another. You decided not to like the game, fine. Why the need to misrepresent the game for others who are looking at possibly trying it out?

This was a valid comment, and it's good to check the two sides of a coin.

We want to hear opinions from both sides. And i actually agree with his remark.

As stated the tutorial is on rails and up to level 10 it is a very fluid progression from one point to another where you access quest, hand in get new equipment etc. After that you begin to web out into other areas and on top of that random rifts will open up and you can follow the rifts of war and raid areas with large groups.

To say that this game is on rails is like saying time crisis is a diverse world with lots to explore. There is heaps to see and do and the game itself is very fluid and will attract users from a basic user capability through to advanced user capabilities. If you want to just follow the basic path of leveling you can and if you want more exploration it's available.

Or one could do what I did and only do the quests they want, do rifts, a bit of pvp and a bit of exploring/killing mobs.

One doesn't have to run from quest hub to quest hub if they don't want. most of my gear I purchased on the AH.

The developers have given the players options and it's up to them to excercise these options.  It's still a themepark game but you can take yourself off those rails if you want.

When freemarch gets attacked by huge amounts of death rifts i do just look around and go "wow this is cool" The majority of the game is just the same old grind however.

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

what? the game is quest based from level 1 to level 50 and each quest is linear

each quest hub leads to another quest hub, on rails

that is all there is to it

omg basioni told the truth, all man the the station, man the gate, man the towers

what do you want to do, lie to people instead? whatever, lie to him if you want, I don't care

Like it was stated above, questing isn't the only way to level, and you can easily "hop off the rails" if you choose.

    I personally enjoy seeking rifts.

Short of being a sandbox MMO, a non-stop quest grind to cap has come to be expected in MMORPGs. Grind mobs or grind quests, either way, you're grinding.

To say that there is nothing you can do except quest from beginning to cap though is a mistruth.

.. But in a good way.

Look! If you despise the game this much simply just ignore it. Why come here, are you trying to turn people away from it? Explain your reason because you are saying things about RIFT that are not true. I think RIFT is good, not the best but a new polish well MMORPG, there is nothing wrong with the damn game.

The only time I was ever impressed by Rift (only played in the open beta) was when experienced my first rift. After the first one and then seeing a death rift spawn in the same exact spot 5 times in a row I was extremely underwhelmed.

That is only the first rift, right out of the tutorial zone. After that, they spawn in an increasingly growing number of locations all over the area.

Which is common knowledge to everyone who has spent longer than 2-3 hours in the game.

@OP: the world isn't that large, I'd say it's smaller than 1 WoW continent. There are quite some locations to explore but not in the 'vast wide open world' kinda way. The regions themselves are pretty detailed and atmospheric though.

Personally I found the massive invasions impressive when you see mob troops roaming everywhere through the zone and you're trying to fight off waves off them in a raid group, it can get pretty hectic that half an hour to an hour can fly by before you realise it. Good stuff.
