The only time I was ever impressed by Rift (only played in the open beta) was when experienced my first rift. After the first one and then seeing a death rift spawn in the same exact spot 5 times in a row I was extremely underwhelmed.
That is only the first rift, right out of the tutorial zone. After that, they spawn in an increasingly growing number of locations all over the area.
Which is common knowledge to everyone who has spent longer than 2-3 hours in the game.
I spent 2 and a half hours in the game. Those 2 and a half hours were boring for me. I felt that the art style was very uninspired and dull. I didn't like the combat and all the time I spent in combat I felt like I had already done it before. I didn't like the soul system because I couldn't make the character I wanted to. I played as a warrior and was stuck with a Champion/Beastmaster/Riftblade combination. I didn't want to dual weild weapons so Paragon was out and I didn't want to use a shield or tank so all the other souls were out. I'm also an altoholic (although I always keep a warrior as my main) and I don't fancy having only 2 starting areas and questlines and 6 plain and uninspired races and only 4 classes (yes I know there are a lot of combinations with the sould system, but when you can have 4 combinations on one character there is no need for many characters, there are also not as many usable combinations as there are combinations [obviously], you can't mix a Paladin soul with a Champion soul even if there are some parts of both that you want to mix).

You don't pick Paragon JUST for dual wielding. There are reasons to take Paragon, even if you're a 2h user. Often you'll choose a tree for other things besides basic attacks or abilities. Perhaps you should study a bit deeper on what each soul is about.

I would rather not, I won't be buying the game anyway, and from what little I have seen from my time in the open beta there is more about this game that I don't like than the very little I do.

1. I'm not sure where I gave the impression that I asked for an account of your experiences with Rift, because I wasn't.
2. I wasn't saying that the amount of time that you spent ingame was bad, or that you should have played longer. I was commenting on your observation towards rifts that you made, namely that it only applied to that first rift and not to the others.
3. I was merely guessing about the amount of time you spent ingame, but if that first rift was as far as your experiences went with rifts, then that 2.5 hours fits.

I played through the starting area in beta, and was struck by - to my mind - the lack of any awe or wonder at a mysterious new world. I guess it was the railway tracks that led me through the zone. There was no sense of being let loose in a surprising new place.
But I don't want to judge from the tutorial. Once you get beyond that, do things open up? Or does it retain the WAR train track feel? (The mood of the game seemed very WAR to me).
In my next MMO, I am looking for a large world to explore... which offers the thrill of cresting a hill and finding a shining city below, or heading off into a remote corner and stumbling across a magnificent series of waterfalls guarded by some unexpected creature.
Does Rift offer any of this, or is it not that game?
I wanna like the game i really do I am still on the fence about it atm i think the community will and is the biggest downfall of this game.I guess i am oldschool I come from games where I won't jump others kills,I won't run in and loot a item the person is clearing to get too sadly thats about all I have dealt with last 2 days on top of the duel spam as I am trying to go to a quest or finish one.Hopefully alot of those tools will go back to WoW after the first month and a good community forms,
I've been playing on the Guardian side and what I found realy cool was the massive Aelfar (sp?) invasion. That one really felt like a war. Other than that it is pretty typical but I've had fun so far just roaming around, getting artifacts, and doing the occasional quest. It's not for everybody but for me this game will keep me busy for a month or so.
what? the game is quest based from level 1 to level 50 and each quest is linear
each quest hub leads to another quest hub, on rails
that is all there is to it
omg basioni told the truth, all man the the station, man the gate, man the towers
what do you want to do, lie to people instead? whatever, lie to him if you want, I don't care
Like it was stated above, questing isn't the only way to level, and you can easily "hop off the rails" if you choose.
I personally enjoy seeking rifts.
Short of being a sandbox MMO, a non-stop quest grind to cap has come to be expected in MMORPGs. Grind mobs or grind quests, either way, you're grinding.
To say that there is nothing you can do except quest from beginning to cap though is a mistruth.
Having other things to do doesn't change the fact that the questing is still on rails.
This is true which is why I suggested doing the other things. I've found the game far more open and less constricting because I don't do every quest in every hub.
However, if that is the sole reason one wants to play this game then "yes" questing is on rails and if that is an issue I would suggest people staying far away. Also, if players are playign this game just to quest I would also offer them the idea of rethinking their interest in the game because there are going to be times when you just can't turn in quests or take them.
To me this is a good thing. to others it's going to cause issues.

Look! If you despise the game this much simply just ignore it. Why come here, are you trying to turn people away from it? Explain your reason because you are saying things about RIFT that are not true. I think RIFT is good, not the best but a new polish well MMORPG, there is nothing wrong with the damn game.
I said the game was good for themepark people, not for others. People who play rift right now are so mad at anything and everyone, crazy. And then you wonder why the community has a bad name if you act like this. I even said it was a good game for themepark lovers. OP asked if the game is on rails, yes it is on rails.
If you want people to tell you the game is perfect, then maybe this site isn't for you. Maybe they would agree with you on the Rift forums, if you don't want any critique, why even come to a site like this you know....and then get angry when people disagree....ok.....maybe go to the official site instead, or maybe take a chill pill.

It has its problems (my only real problem with it are the large queues, but better that than empty servers lol).

You know what? I'm an EVE player , but I don't go to themepark MMORPGs forums to tell people there that their games suck because their games don't have sandbox elements and don't cater to non-themepark players. Different genre for different audience. If the game is not for me because it's not up to my taste then I state the reasons why it's not for me then GTFO, never cling to the forums.

PLayed in CB1, 1 day in CB2 and 1 hout in CB3. After the tutorial, the track goes on and on... At around level 15 I had enough of playing a railroaded game and left it. I was so disappointed by it :'(
IMO, RIFT is one of the games to fail utterly and go F2P in about a year...

So I am not in the state of being burnt out on WoW, that many are.
I am encouraged by the language for the PvP servers and such. They seem open to a open/pvp type dungeon and more mechanisims for open world pvp. We will see. If all fails, it wil get me by till something comes along that is more to my style...almost 2 years of waiting, I got tired/bored...Their is no guarantee that GW2, swtor (which I don't have much hopes for, but I will check out the offering), or even Archage (which I am VERY interested in) will deliver.
So I guess maybe your where I was, and thats why your in the forum, and on a game you don't likes forum so much, your playing the MMORPG.com MMO atm like I was for so long. As for taking shots at a community, its the internet. People are jerks when their is a story about the Red Cross helping someone...Let alone a MMO. Their isn't a game that doesn't have people that will be a jerk, everytime someone has tried to feed me one, I go look at their forums, and it's as bad or worse than the one they are complaining about. Any AAA mmo will have people with agendas, one person with an animal name made an account to just bash Rift from day one here, and 95% plus of their posts have done so for months...Its the way the internet is, and unless someone can punch you in the face through their monitor, its not gonna change.

mmorpg.com is THE most known and i guess most frequented side of the world when it come to this genre. so, how likley is it that pr/marketing guys from the industry use this platform in their 'battles for customers'. sure, you always have some fanatic fans defending 'their' game to the last drop of blood, but it wouldn't wonder me if some of them get paid. its up to the forum user to decide which contributor we like to pay attentention and whom to trust in their opinion.

It's every time the same, eh? Some people defend "their game" like it were the next Holy Grail.
I very much agree to bastionix; the game IS on rails, a lot so, and for "extreme themeparking" kind of gamers. If you want a place were no critic is allowed, I suggest you migrate to North Korea. =P

The game is very much on rails until you start to hit zones like Scarlet Gorge, it surprised me how open the world suddenly became and I was saddened that they hadn't done this with earlier areas. Post Scarlet Gorge it widens out even more until you get two massive zones at around lvl 35 and you choice in progression extends too (not by amazing amount but there are little side activities you can choose to get involved in). I would say it's less on rails than a game like Aion.
If you havn't found any awe you havn't played much of the game. About 5 minutes out of the starter zone we had a huge invasion where ther was a world raid boss destroying the town. He had 175k health we are all lvl 7, lol. It took about 100 of us to take him down, with many deaths thrown in. So it took no time for me to find awe in this game.
yep. I went through the same thing on deepwood the other day. it was amazing. there wasn't just a rift the whole sky as far as the eye could see darkened and a ton of 20-30 ft tall creatures started attacking the countryside outside of the capital city. it was just awesome.
I played through the starting area in beta, and was struck by - to my mind - the lack of any awe or wonder at a mysterious new world. I guess it was the railway tracks that led me through the zone. There was no sense of being let loose in a surprising new place.

You won't get a large world to explore in Rift. There are about a dozen zones, and none seriously large or open. The game is all about questing. Rift is a quick fix game, not something for those who want to get lost.
Is there any sense of awe , wonder , mystery here-----------------------------------NO! Seriously I dont think this game inspires anyone , the fact that people are comparing it to wow is kind of sad, you dont work for your skills ahh this has allready been said , mediocre folks, if that is what you want then go for it, I have much more fun playing Mass effect 2 by myself , even Vindictus which is a one shot pony is more fun, but viva la differance when you see that rift just make sure you dont fall in its a long way to the bottom and it can be boring getting there.

What was wrong with that post?
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.

People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert

I would say it's less on rails than a game like Aion.
yep. I went through the same thing on deepwood the other day. it was amazing. there wasn't just a rift the whole sky as far as the eye could see darkened and a ton of 20-30 ft tall creatures started attacking the countryside outside of the capital city. it was just awesome.

Thank you for telling us that you enjoy games that aren't mmos!
What I consider truly sad is comparing RIFT to Vindictus. You my friend have failed at gaiming. Enough said.
Is there any sense of awe, wonder, mystery...........yes, I always find it find it, but you can make up your own mind.
What is a adventure , its not a sandbox , you can play it like a sandbox and go chase rifts for items and points .
Same as all the sandbox does , chase stuff for grinding or crafting stuff .
So whats in your words a adventure other then saying the game is on rails !
Yes its on rails , its on rails for certain purpose of making your toon work , explaining how the stuff works .
Yes tons of gather X or run Y missions kill X and fed ex and escort .
But those quest WILL NEVER EVER CHANGE !!! here thats the real cold fact , its quest system that works .
People are familiar to it , they don´t mind , so please tell me without dancing and prancing around .
Whats your idea of a adventure .
