In a sense yes. All games since WOW has pumped out so many servers. Only to be merged. I feel Rift won t be any different. I could be wrong , but name a game thats like WOW(which Rift is) or similar that hasn t. As I said, Rift has little lasting power, like alot of games made recently. I m telling you rifts themselves, which is the name of the game, are terribly boring after awhile. I know alot of people don t feel this way, but theres no way in hell Rift will retain even 40% after a few months.
But the only alternative is to limit sales instead, like DFO did.
Caught between a rock and a hard place....
What would you do as a dev yourself?
I agree, you have to add more servers. I m stating it s the state of MMOs as of late. People frothing at the mouth for a new game because the last "OMG this game is the best and will kill WOW" game isn t as good as they once thought. So people flock to them, servers are added and then merged. It s inevitable.
I purchased this game on Thurs and have already cancelled my account and requesting a full refund through paypal.
This game is the saddest excuse for a "Next-Gen" MMO i've ever seen. In fact, Trion should be sued for false advertisement for even daring to market this thing as Next-Gen. It is about as next-gen as putting wheels on a Bike.
There is nothing going for this game. It's as generic as generic can possibly be. One might argue and say "But they have Rifts!"... right. A spot on the map where a bunch of monsters get spammed out of. Gee, I wonder how many seconds that took to think up and implement.
The combat system is just your generic button mashing.... graphics are mediocre at best.... At the end of the day it's nothing more than a bad version of WoW.
Save your money for something like Guild Wars 2... stay away.
Tell me, who send you? Who do you work for??
Aren't we a little paranoid?
They are coming for you and know where you live....
Leucent, Rift has one key difference: It is polished, it has more than sufficient amount of content, it is not broken , it is ready. The recent failed MMORPGs lacks all of these things.
And Rift is no more shallow than WoW nor EQ nor FF XI(unless you count hardcore grinding as "depth")
I can t agree with this. Polished, does not mean content. It has the same standard affair of kill this, collect this etc etc. It has collections that most won t even care about after awhile. It has rifts that to me are just glorified PQ s that become extremely stale. It has a soul system that is going to make starter areas desolate, because people won t need to make new chars. It has or will have a DF system. It is a spoon fed, easy mode MMO, that will become boring to alot of people in time. I m not sure it will, I m just predicting it will happen. I can t take anyone seriously if they think it will retain even half the people who bought the game in the first place.
I agree with OP its a VERY generic game. I fell asleep while playing the beta, just couldnt bring myself to get past level 10.
Thank god for betas, so i didnt have to purchase the game to find out it sucked.
I cant wait for a real next gen game like Guild Wars 2, it has that epic feel to it.
I just dont understand how people can accept such mediorcrity in todays gaming. Companies not taking chances and basically copying other games shouldn't be encouraged, this board has a terrible case of fanboism. Im not sure if its the Trion shills or actual gamers but its very depressing coming here and reading people hyping Rift like its the second coming.
Difference between WAR, AoC, FE, Aion.... and Rift is Rift is solid as hell and had as many beta servers as they could fill. Now that its launched they started with 33 servers... filled them... opened more... now at 63. WAR and AoC opened with a ton of servers right away and when the miracle live patch never happened... death. Aion killed themselves by having a ton of hype, little beta, terrible launch and telling people no when they said more servers were needed.
For me its real simple. Rift does things no one else does. They also move fast, listen to the fans and when they make a mistake we don't see some blog explaining why they are right and you are wrong. Love that they are taking shots at SOE and Bliz. The "We're not in Azeroth anymore" t-shirts are just awesome viral marketing.

War did the same thing. for teh first 3-6 months that had around 50+ servers. How many did they have after 1 year? Yea....
Hmmm, a new account with a first post like this does make it look suspiciously like a 2nd account that's being created.
Leaving that aside, OP didn't like it, and now wants to warn others. Ok. However, not everyone does have to feel the same way as the OP did about Rift, apparently many are having a great time in Rift. Besides, the OP sounds more like a 'be aware of what you buy' warning: if you're a person that can get very agitated when a bought game isn't what you expected, then the lesson learnt should be to read up about it before buying.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
Trion couldn't ask for better exposure of rift, for all the negative comments it certainly is on everyones minds. Hope I see you all out there in telara.
I'm looking forward to GW2 but lets be honest here... we don't know much, seen even less outside of scripted demos. It could be next gen, it could be flashy graphics, odd class mechanics, WoW's phasing or instanced missions. Until we play it we just don't know. Super excited but we just don't know.
OP should have done some research, it's been widely reported that Rift is a standard fantasy MMO that has taken things from what has gone before and made them a little bit better. The next gen is the server technology which isn't going to be obvious unless you look at whats happening in game over a period of time. If you are looking for next gen as hyped for games like GW2 and SWTOR you need to look elsewhere but if you want a solid, bug free fantasy MMO experience with the added extras of rifts, Invasions and a good character build system that's a hell of a lot of fun then Rift is for you and you should buy it.
@Leucent we don't know how stale it will become until we get objective reports about end game, as it stands it's only stale if you're sick to death of standard fantasy mmo mechanics, if that's you that's fine, just remember there are loads that still enjoy that style of game play and those people will hang around.
Trion has how many betas and how long of an open beta? Ya, if you didn't play any of those and bought anyway.... well thats on you.
In other news... Rift is up to 63 servers and still has queues
So was WAR, now theres 2. The sad thing with MMOs made these days are the lasting power of them. People jump from one to another to another, and it just keeps going. Rift is no different, the more servers they add, the more that will be merged. I guess they don t have a choice, but thats how it is nowadays, the games are so shallow that after a few months people are dieing for a new game. Hence the queues.
Not sure if the comparing War and Rift in such a way is correct . I was there at the War release and in no way was it as polished or as much fun as Rift is . I remember people saying WoW would crash and burn six years ago . It could go either way . A lot depends on an endgame neither you or I or anyone else know much about as yet . If the endgame is as good as the leveling it could end up being the second most succesful mmo if not it'll crash and burn to some degree but even then I doubt it'll be to the extent War did .
We actually know everything about the end game. We also know another 20 man raid is in test and yet another roughly 2 months out. There are also 2 more zones on test.
For those not following the media, Trion is currently two months ahead of where they wanted to be on launch.
Rift is also only 1 of 3 worlds Trion is working on. Should be interesting to see what the other IPs are.

Thats all subjective. I actually had more fun in WAR then I did playing Rift throughout all their betas. I just feel Rift as polished as it is doesn t neccessarily make it fun. I know alot of people like it, but we ll see in a few months. I joined a new LS in FFXI recently. We all rolled new chars to play the game like it was. I can t count how many people in that LS alone that pre ordered Rift and actually said screw it FFXI is much better I don t even want to log in. I have a friend who is an avid WOW guy. He tries every MMO out there. He bought Rift and said wow this game is quite good. After 2 days he s already bored lol. I know thats not everybody, but I can see it happening alot more.
1 or 1649 posts what is the difference?! I've seen guys with 1k + posts who joined the community a month ago...so that make them viable?! Please stop bashing with these 1 post thing. And yes they said it is next gen but who knowes the late game might be. So far - nothing new.
Save your money for something like Guild Wars 2... stay away.
You can't tell me what to do.
Honestly, by your logic. Why would I ever buy another FPS or RTS, or any game with a 2 in it's title? Hell, why even read new books, watch new movies or meet new people while I'm at it? I mean, it's all been done before right? Fuck, they havn't even come out with a new form of human in 40,000 years. Someone should sue somebody for calling kids "the next generation" it's false advertising!
I wonder which company the OP works for. SOE maybe? It's called viral anti marketing. He didn't even give us an idea of what makes a good game in his opinion therefore his opinion is bunk. At least give us pros and cons so we can debate.

Really? because everytime somone on this site posts a short, poorly argued negative post they must be working for a rival company's "viral marketing" hit squad....
Tin foil hat much?
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
I can t agree with this. Polished, does not mean content. It has the same standard affair of kill this, collect this etc etc. It has collections that most won t even care about after awhile. You know what? If you actually have researched about rift content's for launch you'd know that rift has more than sufficient amount of content for launch, all of the instanced dungeons will have expert version for level cap which expanded the storyline and have more content than the normal version. Several open world rift raids(not the same as regular rifts), one raid instances not to mention 10 and 20 version. I wonder how could you disagree with me that the game does not have sufficient content for launch.
About the"It has the same standard affair of kill this, collect this etc etc. It has collections that most won t even care about after awhile. It has rifts that to me are just glorified PQ s that become extremely stale ". The first part I agree but it has rifts to break up the monotony. The last part is opinion, but people will still do rift to get token and stuffs for gears, just like people still daily farm heroics in WoW.
About the "Rift will have a DF system", no it won't just like BFBC2 did not have the DF system, FF XIV is the game that will have the DF system. People will still roll new toons because while each calling can choose to build the souls the way they want, they're still within the boundary of the souls that belong to that calling, not to mention each calling are still limited in armour, weaponry and playstyle. Also did you know that the extreme vast majority of WoW players never level more than 2 chars to max level?
"It is a spoon fed, easy mode MMO, that will become boring to alot of people in time." This "alot of people", whatever they are they're definitely not the majority, and while I'm a hardcore gamer I still have to accept the fact that the vast majority prefer things to be.....not too rough.
"I m not sure it will, I m just predicting it will happen"
Would you kindly add "I personally believe" before each of your sentence regarding the fate of this game instead of spouting them as fact or.....prophecies?
"I can t take anyone seriously if they think it will retain even half the people who bought the game in the first place."
And after reading your posts more thoroughly , I can't take you seriously anymore, they give me a very strong feeling that you've never actually played the game and only watch videos and read some rather vague and generalized stuffs about it then come here to to become the prophet of doom, or you've never made it past the first levels.
2nd Day: *sighs* "Oh look, another rift opened. Guess I'll go help close it."
3rd Day: "Goddamn it, there's a fucking rift right where I need to quest. How many of these things are there?!?"
The only thing innovative about this game gets stale very, very quickly.
That being said, the game is well polished and looks good, although the animations seemed rather stiff to me. I'm sure many people will enjoy it, but time will tell how many subscriptions they retain. It's not for me though.
I wonder which company the OP works for. SOE maybe? It's called viral anti marketing. He didn't even give us an idea of what makes a good game in his opinion therefore his opinion is bunk. At least give us pros and cons so we can debate.
His opinion isn't bunk, everyone has one just like you, and they DON'T have to explain it to make it valid. BUT, he did explain it if you read it again, he said there is no innovation and that it is super generic.
