Can they really improve the game drastically enough, short of adding a whole new continent with vastly more open zones or making some interesting and open dungeons among other things?
There're open world raids in the form of rift raids(not the same as regular rifts).
Of course, maybe I just want Rift to fail to succeed. Maybe there are enough people who enjoy shallow, uncreative experiences to keep this game going for some time. If there is then MMOs are surely doomed.
So just because it has no level grinding, PvE Focused, convenient and familiar UI, soloing is viable, and is a themepark, it automaticaly is a shallow game?
And here's something new for ya: the extreme vast majority of people don't care about creative experience, they want fun experience. There's a reason Halo, COD, BF,SC, Mass Effect, WoW, Tom Clancy games and other present AAA titles are selling like hot cakes, despite the complete lack of creativeness.
Although i did enjoy playing in the beta ...There are plenty of reasons i wont be buying the game.
Yes the game is very polished , and some elements of the game were really fun.
That said ! The game does feel generic ! What can i say? Call me a troll all day IDC !
If you feel like its the greatest game ever , and want to spend money on it. Thats obviously your choice and i respect that.
Lets be honest here though...Trion has been trying there asses of to please the masses ! So for that Trion, the new company deserves a thumbs up.
The game itself has grade A quality written all over it, this is no doubt. Another thumbs up!
Graphics are not so great...Sure they look better than WoW , but thats not saying much. Only thing that really makes the game look good is the overpowered shading. Lets be honest..the shading is a bit much.
Which brings me to the thousands of people that had unexplained low FPS , mostly on Ati cards from what i hear. I had the low FPS for awhile till i turned off the damn shading and AA then i started gettin 45-50 FPS on utltra. I dont know what the deal is with that but thats definetly somthing they need to work on.
Originality?...There is none ! Although rifting was lots of fun..its not really 100% original.
Rift is solid game that should do well for awhile , but i wont be buying it ! I just have more fun playing WAR or Aion.
"Maybe there are enough people who enjoy shallow, uncreative experiences to keep this game going for some time."
AGREE!
I'm bemused kalimah. Under your name and avatar you state 'long live DAoC', but then you state you agree with my statement of concern about the people who may want to play Rift.
Are you saying you think there are enough people to enjoy Rift because it is good, or saying that you agree with my concern about the make up of the current MMO fanbase?
I think this game can work for people who've never played an MMO, or at least, never played a fantasy MMO. But if you're even remotely an MMO veteran, I think you'll find this attempt at next-gen MMO laughable. It is a blatant WoW clone, down to sound effects and item icons. I found it utterly unplayable. There's not an original pixel in the whole game. So, if you have nothing to compare it with, you might even enjoy it for a while. But if you've ever tried LOTRO, WoW, AION, AoC, DDO or virtualy any other fantasy MMO, you will probably find them vastly superior to this poor jumble of outdated concepts.
That's how I felt in the the beta: "Kill 10 wolves" - "F*** OFF you demonic WoW-WAR-child!". =D
But i tried playing with builds more and after about lvl18ish somehow started liking the game.
I purchased this game on Thurs and have already cancelled my account and requesting a full refund through paypal.
This game is the saddest excuse for a "Next-Gen" MMO i've ever seen. In fact, Trion should be sued for false advertisement for even daring to market this thing as Next-Gen. It is about as next-gen as putting wheels on a Bike.
There is nothing going for this game. It's as generic as generic can possibly be. One might argue and say "But they have Rifts!"... right. A spot on the map where a bunch of monsters get spammed out of. Gee, I wonder how many seconds that took to think up and implement.
The combat system is just your generic button mashing.... graphics are mediocre at best.... At the end of the day it's nothing more than a bad version of WoW.
Save your money for something like Guild Wars 2... stay away.
Thanks for the waste of time.
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I suggest that you start looking for a model-T. Since it was concidered the 1st car and since everything the came after it is just repitions of the same-old same-old. There is nothing new out there, just cheap-ass repitions of the previous designs that you are unwill/unable to accept as true progressions of development.

As Maverick suggested, I might really be burned out on MMO themepark mechanics. It seems that I cannot stomach another "Kill 10 somethings" without a rock-solid story behind it. This game had a paper-thin intro dialogue and promptly thrusted us into yet another hack-and-slash fest. It might be that it picks up after level 10, but I'm afraid I'll never find out.
Being dissapointed with Rift, I tried Fallen Earth's 30-day trial period. This game somewhat restored my faith in MMOs. NPCs with mission text you actually want to read, awesome intro, crafters paradise, nice community. Sub-par graphics, to be sure, but a ton of mood, charm and originality.
But I digress. The only Rift I'm interested in right now is a 12-man instance in LOTRO.
A fool is still foolish. I declair a witch hunt and open season on the troll. Let the mob form! Mob rules! BURN THE TROLL!

Rift is a progression of development? Exactly what is progressive about Rift?
- The class system is just 4 AA tables.
- The rifts are just glorifiedPQs without the story.
- The combat is duller than anything that has come before. No abilities are anything to write home about.
- The dungeons are more linear and simplistic than anything I have ever seen.
- The questing makes this game more of a platformer than an MMO.
- The world is the smallest and most compact I have seen in any MMO. Runescape is bigger...possibly.
Tell me, what is progressive about Rift? Other than how is progresses the simplistic nature of modern MMOs even further, that is.

lol love the hating yes please stay away from the game, the current population (prelaunch) is beyond alive, thriving and is better off without you...
I didnt buy Rift, nor do I know if I ever will, but I do think it's funney to see new accounts bashing every game that is released as soon as some nice numbers start to appear...
I see this in 2 perspectives, or, this people work or have interests in other companies, or, they feel so related to other games that the urge to bash this new ones is unavoidable, either of the 2 is frankly sad...
I wonder which company the OP works for. SOE maybe? It's called viral anti marketing. He didn't even give us an idea of what makes a good game in his opinion therefore his opinion is bunk. At least give us pros and cons so we can debate.
Really? because everytime somone on this site posts a short, poorly argued negative post they must be working for a rival company's "viral marketing" hit squad....
Tin foil hat much?
Not at all. We've already seen a comment from SOE about a ripoff/clone game that most people in the genre assume they meant Rift. Also, there is anti viral marketing just like there is pro viral marketing. Also his ONE post count and not commenting anymore in this thread points to either being a troll or paid to debunk Rift. Has nothing to do with "conspiracy theories" it's called business/marketing tactics. If you think it's not possible, then I say pull your head out of the sand and take a look at the world around you.

His opinion isn't bunk, everyone has one just like you, and they DON'T have to explain it to make it valid. BUT, he did explain it if you read it again, he said there is no innovation and that it is super generic.
It's bunk when he just spews it in generic hyperbole(yeah remember that article from the other day? prime example right here from the OP). The point is his name and post count and blatant attack using the common argument against Rift we've seen in the last few months suggest he is a troll or paid schill.
I love how everyone calls Rift a Wow Clone when you think about it Wow was a Clone of Eq
Everyone should stop calling each mmorpg that comes out a clone each Fantasy mmorpg will have Very close similtartys

Well I totally understand your post as it probably comes from someone whos unemployed. For those of us that actually DO work, this game is perfect! we do not have the time to play 8 - 10 hours a day.. thus we need to be able to get into instance action, be that questing/rifts/invasions/"linear dungeons"... This game really does cater to the casual population, not the "hardcore" ... you now, the hardcore that cant even get a job due to be unkept and toothless, toothless due to the amount of red bull they drink... we simply arent "that"... so yes, should you be unemployed with nothing better to do but be immersed in a world 10 hours a day, this probably isnt the best game for you... go play FF XI or better yet, Vanguard
Another reason to avoid Rift. The community is full of people like this guy.

And yet again someone judges me wrongly. I've lost count of the number of people who have made assumnptions about me based on my lack of love for Rift.
In reality I work hard and unsociable hours and my time playing games is limited. I would rather have 2 hours a week playing a deep game than a whole week of unemployed time playing something as shallow as Rift.
Congratulations on being so, so very wrong and not having the ability to argue my points in an intelligent manner, but to bow to finger pointing.
What i dont get is how can you be bored of WOW and enjoy Rift ? I've been bored of WOW for over a year i tried Rift and it felt the same as playing WOW. I'm not buying the game just because it's too similar to WOW.
Because its a different world, different story, different NPC's, different quests, etc....
No offesne your argument sounds like, to me, "How can you enjoy reading a fantasy novel if you read oen before?" or "How can you like this movie's sequel if you liked the first one?".
To me, I cannot understand why if someone really liked WOW, why they do not like Rift even more.
This^^
Well said. I loved WoW for 6 years but got very bored this last year due to the game not growing deep enough to hold me. Now we have Rift and it's flashy and new and fun and familiar like WoW so I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Only reason I'm even posting right now is because the game is down for half an hour for an update.
