the title of this thread is extremely exaggerated and opinionated.
Rift has absolutely nothing of innovative. wile it does most things decently it excels at absolutely N O T H I N G.
i can think of 2 upcoming mmo right of the bat that i will play wich at least have something unique about them: Tera (for the targetless combat ) and SWTOR ( mostly just for the Start Wars immersion). to think that Rift will be the best fantasy mmo for the next few years it's just a very stupid and narrow minded view of things.
City of heroes introduced a lot more unique aspects to MMO scene than WoW but which do you think ended up getting more subscribers? In fact Blizzard even admitted they took a lot of features from CoH and implemented in later patches (pvp zone, achievements, Dest objects etc).

Wasn't CoH one of those buggy, unfinished games that had a horrible rushed launch?

Launch of CoH was far smoother than WoW. But people wanted loot and end game raids which CoH lacked.
Anyway this is my opinion after playing Beta 5 and 6. I stop playing Rifts after reaching lvl 28 cos the game is seriously so lame. Linear quest, 2 faction races same starting area and combat animation are freaking dull and slow. The games feel it should be a B2P or F2P MMO. Dev is so lazy that they even recycle Warhammer armor design. The only cool thing about Rifts is the octopus tentacles from the sky that reminded me of last boss in Hellboy 1 movie.
I felt that the only thing Trion put more effort is by getting people to spam that Rifts are awesome in all the forums and MMO sites lol.

I doubt you even played the game, none of the armor even remotely even resembles WAR (which had unique armor for each and every race). WAR actually had better armor one of things it did well.
I played all the RIFT betas and got to level 26 . The only reason I did'nt pre-order is that my machine got relatively low fps on even the low settings . Other than that what I saw although generic to some degree was polished and fun to play . Many people seam to be waiting for the next generation mmo but I think thats unlikly to happen anytime soon . What we are more likly to see is the evolution of old ideas in the same way we do in single player games . Half-life owes a lot to doom and the likes of Tomb Raider owes a lot ot the old platform games .
I remember a time when every first person shooter was a Doom or Quake clone but that was'nt seen as a bad thing so why should an Everquest clone or WoW clone be seen in a different way . If your waiting for something really inovative in the traditional fantasy mmo genre you could be waiting a long time . Lots of comments are made about Guild Wars 2 but in truth its still too much of an unkown quantity to know if it will be anything really different .
The thing is I think RIFT is as likly as good as it will get for many years to come . If you don't like it and are bored with the other mmos on the market then perhaps its time to look a little further than dwarves , elves ,orcs and goblins and either try a different genre MMO(maybe scifi) or give up MMOs for the next 5-10 years .
If your unhappy with this its extremly unlikly you will enjoy anything to be released in the next half a decade or so .
And this is a fact most people still wait for a next gen that will not come in 10 years.

WOw, it took you to level 28 to figure out something that could be learned from screenshots or the first 10 levels? {Mod edit}
Don't most fans of Rift say that if you don't get past level 15 or something like that then your opinion doesn't matter because the world opens up more. Maybe he took the fans' words to heart and honestly thought that the game would be funner after a certain point.

orcs goblins and such dont make games and other games clones ...alot of people saying its **easy like** and **interface like hotbuttons spells/combat and such** are wow like ..wich is why people beat the clone war drum...as i say that i too belive its still more of the same ol same ol "wow type genra" people are getting tired of hearing it but its the truth..the devs dont give a sh**t about the genra and are out to make a quick buck even if it means totally ripping off the top dogs ideas from the game *wow* theres ways they coulda made this ui look totally diff but play the same but didnt because they want wows subs "as does everyone" ...all most devs are trying to do now is to make mmo that resembles wow so the kidies will flock to their game..cant blame me...so basicly they get a game..beef up the grafix a bit ..same flashy colors and sprinkles and the fast lvling andhope that those lil kiddies are a lil bit older now and pray that they are wanting their theampark from 6months to a year...the newer mmo's of today are nothing more than games as back in the day mmo's were a type of lifestyle and a sence of accomplishment ...i myself wont be trying rift because it didnt even pass the eye test for me..iv seen it played on videos and iv seen pics / read up about it..its more of the same and looks alot like wow sry to say..and no i dont have to play this game to see its not ..if you see an apple its an apple ..if someone says its tastes diff then ya i'll take your word for it..im not eating it..you can have it..its still an apple to me..i'll go else where to get my apple
... 10 years? Really? Nobody can come up with something better than RIFT in 10 years? That's a long time in computer gaming years...
A LONG time.
What do you mean better? If you want another mmo like WoW with all the content and DX11 graphics give me 300 million and can make you one (even Cata cost 150 million and ToR will top 200 mill).

Damned if you do, damned if you don't I guess.
Of his complaints what would have taken 28 levels to figure out? The only difference (of his complaints) that changes from the early levels to level 28 is the openness of quests. Other than that, all of his generic compalints could have been realized earlier. heck, the majority could have been learned by screenshots much less 28 levelss in game.
Don't people also say screenshots are also a poor way to judge Rift. They usually say that screenshots don't give you full experience that actually playing the game gives. I personally wouldn't use screenshots to judge any game.

Something more suited to somebody else's tastes.
Because all sorts of people have different ideas of what is better for them.
All the people saying 'No really I swear guys, RIFT is the pinnacle of what you can expect for years and years' suggests that everybody is having some sort of incredible lockstep monolithic taste, and that RIFT has delivered the perfect experience for all MMO players, and one that cannot be topped by anything for years.
I find that hard to swallow. I haven't even played RIFT, but the idea that game design can only go downhill from there is a bit... excessive, don't you think?
Even fans of games like say... WoW can have different tastes, and different reasons for liking it.
I can go through and list at least 6 different upcoming MMOs and the specific reasons why I'm looking forward to them and how they're bringing something different from Rift. Maybe they'll all end up disappointing me, but that would be those games' faults, and have nothing to do with how good or bad Rift itself is. I refuse to believe that Rift is as good as it is physically possible to create for years and years. :P

so let me get this straight..if you had a car..and you saw that same car in a pic..but that car had diff paint job and diff wheels on it..youd buy the same car over just to see if it drives the same as your old car? lol if it cant pass "MY" eye test ...then i'll keep moveing its more of the same and yes iv seen gameplay ..so what that i havent played..even a monkey can see its more of the same
Does a picture of the car tell you if that car works? I wouldn't trust a picture of a car, I would have to see that car in person and hopefully get a test drive to see if is worth my money. A picture can tell you a lot about something but there is much more that it cannot tell you.
It's hard to say for me, it's a day to day thing. And it's a little like how I treat religion. I take little bits and pieces of what works for me and leave the rest.
Um, yeah, They know their dealing with a bunch of suckers.

For your information I was in the beta. I spent 2 and a half hours in the first day of the open beta. I don't like Rift, I won't be playing. I have made my decision on my own informed experiences.

No, you do own a Subaru and someone showing you a picture of a Honda does not really tells you everything about that car.
Sure, if you hate Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO I wouldn't recommend you to buy Rift, they have the same basics. But your likeness with the car really sucks, both with games and cars you need lists of features and performance to even make a rather incorrect judgement.
You will have to drive both cars and check out the new one extensively to be able to give a fair judgement. What would you say if an auto paper reviewed a car just based on pictures?
If I want to drive a Ferrari, I will drive a Ford instead.
If I want to see Transformers, I will watch The Last Song instead.
If I want to play Halo, I will play Littlest pet Shop instead.
Yes, Rift and WOW are both fantasy MMO's and yes, they have some similar mechanics but they are still different games, no matter how someone wants to spin it.
No that is taking things too far.ö
More like if you want a Ferrari you drive a trans am.
And if you want to see Transformers you rent another movie with Megan Fox in instead (I can't think of another reason anyone would see it).
And if you want to play HALO you play Black ops instead.
It still isn't the same thing, far from it but the difference is not as great as you said.
Trion has until the end of this year to solidify their position in the MMO market. Then Tera and GW2 will launch in the fantasy setting and SW:TOR in the space opera, futuristic setting.
6 to 9 months, yes. Few years, no.
Tera is a non issue, it will most likely sell under 100k, if it somehow manages to open well it's going to be Aion 2.0.
Already shit in Korea where it is hyped like mad. I hope players have learn to be more weary of Asian games brought to the western audience and give it at least 3 months before they buy it, especially with the god aweful CS the companies often provide.
ToR... Who knows, alot of people say it's going to be a great single players game, some people say the in game combat is so scripted that skill hardly ever players... Honestly who knows at this point. I'm hoping it turns out great and I would buy it day 1 if it looks even half decent.
GW2... Honestly people are hyping this game so much when almost no information is provided, it's fucking retarded people like you guys who buy these games due to hype and then complain when they suck. The exact same thing happened with WAR's promotional video, they showed a ton of ideas, a little bit of game play and some British accents and people went freaking nuts. Wait until we get more information before you start hyping, don't be stupid (again).
I love how they totaly side stepped the issue. All I saw was 15k per server was false, Not actually giving the number that a server could hold and seing the post of the que problems.
More par for the course with no real numbers given.
If they want to shut folks up on the number issue then they should post we got x number of this and this and back it up, instead of pulling random numbers out of a hat.
Because Zorndorf......I mean pragues use the old 1500 per server to make up that preorders number you saw in the earlier post. I just meant to say that the actual preorders number is definitely high than his "estimation", since the as they've said the server cap have been raised higher from 1500 with each betas, also applies to release. And they've doubled the number of initial HS servers.
Rift has around the same number of players as SWG / Champions Online and Warhammer right now.
About 100k, note the huge drop after the free trial was over.

I described Rift to almost everyone as a game to pick up if you like regular fantasy MMOs, but don't want to play any of the current ones. It's a good iteration of the standard system. But if you already have friends, a guild, and are established in a game already, there's no reason to switch. I'm LotRO with friends right now. Rift is, on the surface, a slightly better game than LotRO, but there's no reason to switch. I might pick up Rift when I leave LotRO, but that won't have anything to do with Rift.
Important facts: 1. Free to Play games are poorly made. 2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals. 3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE. 4. Community is more important than you think.

You seem to be falling into the trap that because those games failed that Rift will. It should
be noted Aion has close to 2-3million subs in Asian countries.
Aion did not fit a US market. The US/EU market VERY heavily rejected the concept of RNG and
have crucified NCSoft West because of it.
Every single person in this thread needs to realize that until Blizzard changes this market
is not moving. GW2 is not going to work. Sorry guys great concept, but look at who it is
attracting.
The moment any mechanic does not work or something is not WoW like that community is going
to murder it. People are having a hell of a time criticizing Rift right now because Trion
did to Blizzard what they did to Everquest.
I'll put money on every single suggestion you see for GW2 will be trying to turn it into
WoW 2.0 and stuff that honestly will make no sense to Guild Wars players.
Archage and Berkanix looks fun way more fun than rifts.
Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language

orcs goblins and such dont make games and other games clones ...alot of people saying its **easy like** and **interface like hotbuttons spells/combat and such** are wow like ..wich is why people beat the clone war drum...as i say that i too belive its still more of the same ol same ol "wow type genra" people are getting tired of hearing it but its the truth..the devs dont give a sh**t about the genra and are out to make a quick buck even if it means totally ripping off the top dogs ideas from the game *wow* theres ways they coulda made this ui look totally diff but play the same but didnt because they want wows subs "as does everyone" ...all most devs are trying to do now is to make mmo that resembles wow so the kidies will flock to their game..cant blame me...so basicly they get a game..beef up the grafix a bit ..same flashy colors and sprinkles and the fast lvling andhope that those lil kiddies are a lil bit older now and pray that they are wanting their theampark from 6months to a year...the newer mmo's of today are nothing more than games as back in the day mmo's were a type of lifestyle and a sence of accomplishment ...i myself wont be trying rift because it didnt even pass the eye test for me..iv seen it played on videos and iv seen pics / read up about it..its more of the same and looks alot like wow sry to say..and no i dont have to play this game to see its not ..if you see an apple its an apple ..if someone says its tastes diff then ya i'll take your word for it..im not eating it..you can have it..its still an apple to me..i'll go else where to get my apple
What do you mean better? If you want another mmo like WoW with all the content and DX11 graphics give me 300 million and can make you one (even Cata cost 150 million and ToR will top 200 mill).
Does a picture of the car tell you if that car works? I wouldn't trust a picture of a car, I would have to see that car in person and hopefully get a test drive to see if is worth my money. A picture can tell you a lot about something but there is much more that it cannot tell you.
OP:
It's hard to say for me, it's a day to day thing. And it's a little like how I treat religion. I take little bits and pieces of what works for me and leave the rest.
Um, yeah, They know their dealing with a bunch of suckers.
Godspeed my fellow gamer
well did you beta? / test drive? it woulda told you its ALOT of more of the same aka like yur old car lol ..i for one wouldnt test drive if it looked like my old car lol
For your information I was in the beta. I spent 2 and a half hours in the first day of the open beta. I don't like Rift, I won't be playing. I have made my decision on my own informed experiences.
ok ..cool then my point is valid lol **shrugs**
No, you do own a Subaru and someone showing you a picture of a Honda does not really tells you everything about that car.
Sure, if you hate Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO I wouldn't recommend you to buy Rift, they have the same basics. But your likeness with the car really sucks, both with games and cars you need lists of features and performance to even make a rather incorrect judgement.
You will have to drive both cars and check out the new one extensively to be able to give a fair judgement. What would you say if an auto paper reviewed a car just based on pictures?
No that is taking things too far.ö
More like if you want a Ferrari you drive a trans am.
And if you want to see Transformers you rent another movie with Megan Fox in instead (I can't think of another reason anyone would see it).
And if you want to play HALO you play Black ops instead.
It still isn't the same thing, far from it but the difference is not as great as you said.

Rift has around the same number of players as SWG / Champions Online and Warhammer right now.
About 100k, note the huge drop after the free trial was over.
40 servers times 2k players = +/- 100k players.
i said same car..you have 2 diff cars..lol maybe i shoulda said 2 subaroooooz lol
Important facts:
Quests in Rift are all KILL X, COLLECT X. And I have played up to level 35 in the beta 6. How is this different from WoW? Shrug.
