Let me tell you something, i don't play RIFT atm i only played in a few BETAS. And i had some kind of respect for that guy because of his WoW videos. But it's kind of ridiculous to call a game a WoW-clone because it has an UI and HOTKEYS... this is one of the silliest comments i've seen.
Did you actually watch the video or are you just basing this assumption on hearsay? I'm interested to know this, because that's not what I actually said.
Sorry but you did start the video saying it's a WoW-clone and saying the game have HOTKEYS and a similar UI. So it seems that for you, all the games that have an UI similiar to WoW or HOTKEYS are clones... nice one. And no im not even a RIFT fan in fact i agree with most of the things you said in the video.
So the guy watched 2 minutes of the video and decided he was fit to judge it then? Those are only the immediately apparent cloned elements of WoW. We're not just talking similar, the UI is IDENTICAL, even in placement, with the exception of the micromenu which is the left, rather than the right.
Explain again why cloning elements of the best MMO on the market is a bad thing and people should be taking offence to it?
Did you actually watch the video or are you just basing this assumption on hearsay? I'm interested to know this, because that's not what I actually said.
Forget it. Any attempt at having a conversation with these overzealous fanboys will lead to nothing else than flaming. They watch maybe five minutes of the video before they turn into omniscient beings that can predict the rest of the video, hence why all the hate is based on people not watching it all the way to the end.
I, on the other hand, actually watched the whole video, and while I don't agree with every single thing you said, it doesn't really matter since it wasn't a review I was watching, it was a WTF video.
Yes, im such a RIFT fanboy that i didn't even liked the game.

I didn't say anything of that, it's normal for games games to take features from each other. Even WoW did that and improved it in several ways and that is the way it should be done. I was just saying that your comment was silly and i still think that way.
Just a reminder that discussing the game and the video is fine, but for actual game comparisons, we have a thread for that purpose. This is not only to keep the forums open for discussion but to make sure threads don't get dragged off the topic and into similar debates over and over.

People comparing MMO's to other MMO's is getting old. How stupid do you have to be to realize that this genre will copy itself in and out. MMO's will look like other MMO's. I played lineage 2 before i played WoW, lineage 2 had health bars, bags, skill bars, a radar/minimap, omg WoW copied it soooo much!
They are MMORPG's. Thats it. When will people wake up and just say, yeah its just another MMO. Thats all i say about the ones that come out lately, even in the past 4 years. Oh its just another MMO, you know why? It doesnt offer anything new, compared to whats been offered before. People will constantly compare games because they are ignorant tards, just like people who argue over xbox vs playstation. It gets old fast. MMORPG's will stay the same, until one evolves them in some way.
Want to see a recent example of this? DC Universe Online, the first jump from a non standard MMO in combat, yet its still just another MMO in every other aspect.
Of course children will be children and still argue that one thing is like another, or better than another, but you cannot make direct comparisons anymore. Games take stabs at others because the others are popular, not because they want to BE like them. If you dont realize that, you sir, are an idiot. They take stabs at them to get attention for themselves. If RIFT marketing didnt mention WoW at all, it wouldnt gain as much attention. The average idiot though, will see that it mentioned WoW, and take it as a personal insult.
Anyhow.. MMO's are just MMO's, until one breaks the mold.
Even the veteran Rift player agreed that it's a WoW clone in almost all respects and let's not pretend that WoW is just a 'clone' of Everquest, it's not. It's derirative of several different games. Most of what Rift is, is taken wholecloth from WoW and then they added in the Rifts mechanic which is similar to Warhammer (to the point where the designer of it is actually from Mythic).
I wrote something like this in my original reply after watching the vid but deleted it. Towards the end of the interview you both seemed to agree that they had done a similar thing to WoW by taking popular mmo elements from other games, polishing them and combining into a single game. I disagreed with that as Rift seemed to have pretty much taken primarily from a WoW in its entirety, as you now said above. Not a bad thing and in many ways if you're going to make a fantasy mmo for the masses it would be stupid to start anywhere other than with a base of the game whch has a massive pool of players to pick from.
The difference and signifanct distinction for me though was in the playing. WoW felt familiar in many ways but still felt like a new game a new world to be immersed in. Rift on the other hand felt like playing a game I had previously played but with a different flavour.
I would like to add though I really didn't like WoW I played it for the time I did purely because my friends were. Rift however had a much better setting for my tastes and felt much betterfor me, it's hard to put a finger on exactly why as they are so similar but the less 'jokey' feel just sat better with me.
Also what exactly is the difference between a 'first impressions review' and a 'WTF is?' Sorry to the person that corrected me and TB can call it whatever he wants but its a first impressions review with the added bonus of having a second opinion of someone that enjoys the game but more importantly has a deeper understanding of what's down the line and the end game.

My comment is factual. Seems to me that people are getting their knickers in a twist because they believe the term "WoW clone" to somehow be a bad thing. The game is a WoW clone in many respects. Whereas WoW is derirative of several games, Rift has an element from Warhammer Online and then the majority of the rest of it's features are taken from WoW. Hence the reason it's a WoW clone.
It's a pointless argument anyway, this was all discussed in great detail in the video, a debate and discussion was had, this is just repetition.
A WoW fanboy calls another MMO WoW clone what a shocker /s. These where same people calling WoW a EQ clone when it came out and when SWTOR comes out they will call it WoW in space. Nothing to see here move on.

I wasn't as much correcting you as I was just pointing out to everyone calling it a review (i.e. an evaluation made after extensively using/testing a product) that it was just a First Impressions Video (i.e. him sitting down for the first time playing it and recording while giving his impressions on the go).

A shame some people only focus on the term "WoW clone" and rage, when he himself both in the video and in this very thread (on more then one occasion) have stated and explained that he's not using it in a derogatory way.

I would take your reply seriously if you had more than 2 posts and both of them in the same thread. Anyway his explanation for his WoW clone argument is weak, the UI and cool downs etc he claims are similar to WoW were actually taken by WoW from EQ. SWTOR and GW2 will implement similar features so are they going to be WoW clones too /sigh.

Seriously? did you even watch the vid ffs? have you read the thread? Do you have the ability to think? A "wow fanboy" as you put it, calling another game a wow clone, how is that anything other than a compliment?
----- The person who is certain, and who claims divine warrant for his certainty, belongs now to the infancy of our species.
Fanboy interviewee: "There are no quest helps in this chain at all. There are two or three of them because otherwise it would be a bit unfair. But basically it's go and fight this NPC, he's in this zone. That's it. They don't point you to where the NPC is."
TB: "I'm sure that's only going to matter for as long as it takes for rifthead.com to be launched."
He just sounds so amazed as he says it, as though that's a feature that's hard to do, or hasn't been done before in many other games, or that players have been demanding it.

What i am saying is he sounds like someone who has never played anything other than WoW calling something WoW clone whether it is complement or critic shows ignorance, since most of the ideas are not invented by blizz in WoW but taken from EQ/UO/DAoC.
Same. He's more honest. Just posting because there is so much confusion and hype surrounding this game. He just plays the game and people can see what it's like for themselves.
They obviously have an axe to grind. So, you go from someone who likes Rift to some one like that, and its supposed to be more valid? What ever floats your boat I guess <shrug>
Yeah that's what hit me too. I agree that Rift tries to recreate some WoW experience in some areas of the game but calling game WoW clone and base it on UI... Well I had a good laugh at this point.
You don't really seem to have watched the entire video. If you instantly stop watching a video when he makes ONE comparison between the two games, well, then you're just being ridiculous. Also, it seems that there are quite some people out there firing all their rage whenever they hear someone calling Rift a WoW-clone.
They only rage because Rift is a decent game. How would you like to buy a Porsche and have people call it a Pinto clone?
Hey now! They both have four wheels, have a metal frame, glass windows and a steering wheel! The porsche is OBVIOUSLY a pinto clone! <rolls eyes> ^^ Given that I have four 85's and an 82 and have been playing WoW since late beta, I'm rather familiar with it myself. But right now I'm playing and enjoying Rift. Its an entertaining, enjoyable game to me. Its also well polished. Thats all I'm interested in. Those who for what ever reason have to jump up and down and get hysterical about some of the ideas it has in common with WoW, should really find themselves another hobby. ^^

Sometimes the most simplistic aspects of an MMO are the biggest indicators of "why" it's a clone. This isn't specific in Rift or even games that model themselves after WoW, but to explain, why do so many MMORPGs have maps that take up the entire screen with a "fog of war" type discovery system? Why do so many MMORPGs have a UI that is so similar to WoW? Why do games have quest items that take up space in one's inventory? Why can't players simply have a universal inventory system instead of having to sort through 5 or 6 bags with various slots? Why do I enter a spirt world when I die and am forced to run back to my corpse?
The WoW UI is extremely solid but that aside, but there's so many tiny nuances within MMORPGs that I thought we would have evolved by this point. In some cases, MMORPGs have even regressed as Everquest II, a game that came out before WoW, did not have quest items that took up space in your inventory at least for simple collect quests. With the advent of Rise of Kunark, you started having to loot corpses for even the most mundane of quests.
Holy shit, you actually managed to lure TB into the trollpits.
I'll watch while he beats the crap out of everyone with his brilliance and dry wit. ...And memes, i was clearly lied to when he said he didn't like 4chan memes.
Here is what TotalBiscuit means with respect to the UIs, and how people dont undersatnd it is beyond me...
If you compared a simple screenshot of EQ's and WoW's UI side by side, they look very different. You would notice very little similarity at all really. Now if you compared WoW's UI with Rift's UI you will note an extreme simalirty. Mini map in top right corner? check. Player and Enemy unit frames with a circle with the portrait and health/mana bars? Check. Chat bottom left WITH 2 TABS FOR GENERAL AND COMBAT? check.
If you want to see merely similar, compare EQ2 and WoW. They are fairly similar in placement of many of the features. However the WoW/Rift again is very close to identical.
This is a video of first impressions and my first impressions mirrored TotalBiscuits almost identically.
