Ultima online is a ghost town and Rift is not using LOTRO's engine.

  • DaxPierceDaxPierce Member Posts: 172

I like Rift a lot as well, but I am pretty sure I am just bored of MMO's in general. Cancel your accounts for awhile, go buy DA2/ME2 or New Vegas. Some people may not agree with me but DA2 is pretty awesome. Plus playing consoles for a few months always invigorates me to go back to MMOs such as WOW/EQ2/ and now a new favorite, Rift.

Sadly, besides EQ2 and its dated graphics none of the other choices offer player housing which to me, is a whole nother reason to play an MMO.

"LOTRO uses the G3 engine made by Turbine, an updated version of the G2 engine used for AC2. This does not mean that LOTRO will be like AC2: the engine itself is a generic toolset to build the game and contains no concepts (as best as possible) for a specific game rule set, form of combat or look-and-feel. Also tools like Maya for 3D modeling , Photoshop Pro (textures), Worldbuilder, MS Visio and even MS Excel are used.

Turbine is also a listed user of Havok, an engine to create realistic physics, and "Granny", a tool for creating avatars, but we do not know if they are used for LOTRO."

Rift is using the Gamebryo engine for the client while the backend was build from the ground up.

So no, Rift is not using LOTRO's engine.

By the way, welcome to the MMOPRGs, where every game is an evolution of a game that came before it.

OP you will find NOTHING NEW IN GW2 or SWTOR, nothing. You just might be burnt out from the genre.

EVE is different, I agree. I've played the game for 6 months.

How is that relevant to the threads created by bored people claiming that they are bored and how EVE is somehow immune to such threads just because it's different?

Played UO since Pre-Tram, and am still subbed to it, mostly for the fun of treasure hunting, even have the high seas booster pack, and yes, other than Atlantic, it is a ghost town. I've played on Chesepeake, Lake Austin and found the server pop was so bad that I moved some chars over to atlantic. Atlantic is still booming being at High server load during peak but it's the only one really, maybe 3-4 med servers and the rest are low all the times.

Rift is using the same engine as WAR. A lot in this game is WAR inspired (minus RvR) and the graphics show that.

Dynamic rift spawning. Some people like it and some people hate it, but it is theirs. And before you go off and say it's some half cocked PQ ripoff from WAR it isn't. The spawns can come in minor or massive waves and attack random places at random times. Don't see that in many other games.

Sounds like you need a time out from the MMO world a bit. Has happened to me a few times and I have taken a few months break and explored the real world and offline gaming.

Might be that you need to get some distance and evaluate your perspective on gaming. Ask yourself these questions.

    1. Why do you play.

    2. What is it that makes you happy.

    3. Do I need to spend this much time on gaming.

    4. What do you want to do in a game

    5. Who do you spend time with online in a game

    6. What can I do different to get a better gaming experience

    7. What can you change to not be bored when you play online

Hopefully you will find the spark again and enjoy your game(s) of choice.

    Regards from Patsuriku

The truth is also that investors will not provide money to games that people do not want. If your type of gameplay is unpopular, no amount of namecalling and finger-pointing will make people invest money into it.

Do you know what your true hope for a change is? That people are really really bored of a certain type of design and start moving to something else. Which apparently it has already started happening with the move to more dynamic content. A small step perhaps but a definite one.

Your MMO savior might be Archage, but I doubt it'll be released in the west any closer to 2013, given the work that still needs to be done in he game, let alone the translations necessary to bring it in the west.

    2) If i buy a game and i can't stand it , what is the effects to the developer that I hate it after they've already got my inital purchase?

    3) What features in this game will keep me playing throughout time as the graphics begin to date , character grinding becomes boring...

    4) Is adding 10 levels to each expansion pack and adding duengons and a few new monsters all I'm looking for in gaming?

I hate to tell you but you are not getting UO 2.0 anytime soon. Only thing close to that would be darkfall.

    {mod edit}

And as for your questions I ask myself this...WILL I HAVE FUN?

That is about the only question I care what the answer is. If it is yes then I buy it, If not then no.

Also no one really cares what your opinion is about games like RIFT and WoW in this thread because this thread is not about your opinion, it is about why the original poster is bored.

OP, you know why you are bored. You are just tired of the same thing over an over again. Its obviously a wow clone even if they lied to you(We are not in azeroth lol) Yes, you are still in azeroth, but there is no orc, undeads, nightelfs...

Me, my 1st mmorpg was wow. It was fun, but i got bored after 3 months already. Then, i tried oher games and got bored fast because they were just like wow. Finally, i started playing darkfall. Its so different that im just hooked to it. I probably never will stop playing it. IT also depend on your playstyle since i finally found my own. Full loot open world pvp. Try to find your own play style and then, chose a game.

jeah they claim to be , but its nothing but the same old boring combat system , what takes zero skill.

teras combat is the next gen of combat in mmos , take a look on that one.

Tera will hit a wall. If you play with any type of MS then do not bother. This means Australians are automatically out. Healing having to target in some wierd way to land heals is going to cause RAGE!!!

Target boxes scaling to character size is typical Korean thinking of things that make ABSOLUTELY no sense to have in a game, but Bluehole justified it "as challenging" in pvp so that is not changing.

    He never said that.

True his point was a minor one in the grand scheme of things, but you seem to have this knack for reading what you want to read to help press your point home.

I'm just saying, if a person takes the time to respond to your post with more then just a troll sentence. You should at least take the time to understand and collate a decent response.

Or, if you have nothing more to add, then say nothing at all.

My reply seems to have touched off unintended debate.

The OP, as I understood it was playing Rift and couldn't figure out why he was feeling bored.  Others suggested and I agree that he's probably suffering from burnout from playing MMO's that are too similar in design to each other.

Someone jumped in the dicussion with the statement (probably accurate) that this was the first thread of many to come on this topic. (people being bored due to similarity of games, not boredom in general)  Someone else jumped in (and perhaps I misunderstood their point) saying that "every" game has threads like this one.

I still maintain that EVE does not have any threads by people who are bored of it because it feels too much like something they've played before.

EVE certainly does have threads from people who say the game is boring to them, but never because it closely resembles something previously played. (OK, ex-Elite players aside)

I feel was perfectly on topic with my initial reply though I've probably jumped the shark in this explaination.

You're analogy is quite preposterous. You're equating drug use to gaming. Drugs have a huge impact on ones health and can cause major problems, up to and including death. Realeasing a watered down video game...I'm pretty sure there are no generally huge side effects to someone or a population.

As for the "Act Now" mentality, thats what a lot of older gamers have today. I am almost 28, I have a full time job with an hour commute 1 way, I have friends, family, go to the gym to keep in shape, and other extra curricular activities. I DO NOT have the time to play games like I did when I was in High School/College. Knowing there is a game out there where I can log in get something done in a half an hour and log out is nice. One of the main reasons I can't play Darkfall. It's a good game, reminds me of old school UO but I don't have the time to play it because it can require a level of commitment. A level I don't have due to, you know, real life...Gaming companies want to appeal to a wide variety of people which is why these types of games are being made. UO was fun to spend time in and grow up in. I don't have the time to do that anymore. Only reason I still play is because my characters are done. I can have fun. If I had to go to a new game and start all over again I couldn't do it. Darkfall has enough subs to get by but probably not in the range of what they want. Simply because they made a game that is not beginner friendly and easy to get into.

There all virtually the same shit... if you BBQ a goat its still a goat! .... This is why there dolts. And i truely believe its just the tech geeks ruining for the gamers out there... You know the guy in his moms basement with the boxes of Iphones , Ipads , Laptops , stacked up in the corner and goes out and buys every tech device that he can get his hands on whether its crap or not?

There doesn't need to be any sense behind it. If someone tried WoW and liked it, did not buy Warhammer, but bought RIFT, it's because they saw something they liked. It's called personal taste. I love UO, thought WoW was ok, and like RIFT. Some people may HATE UO, Love WoW and despise RIFT. Only a moron would try to make sense of something where there is no sense to be made.

A large of people playing a video game it is said by the developers themselves do not post anything so these people here voicing their opinion might be in the minority. Well I certainly like the game and am still enjoying it perhaps because I do not expect a great deal just have fun and little else. If a game manages to entertain me it has succeeded.

omg, Rift made me lose 150kg and turn white!

    Edit:

I wouldn't bother with these forums until Monday but it seems Rift is having a hotfix and the servers are down for 30 mins.

I played the Darkfall trial for like an hour, hated the UI, couldn't get myself to log in after that.....UO is my #1 game of all time (and I still prefer the 2d client), it just turned me off.  I actually still have 4 active UO accounts, I don't get on it much anymore though.  I was really hoping they were going to put a classic type shard up.

Yeah another fan. Typically people who 1. hate the game and never will play or 2. People mad will post on forums.

I am at work and hate my job so I post and I like the game so I am often alone in my happy thoughts.

The guy never really told us why he is bored, so most of are guessing. It would help if the OP gave use more hints. My vote is for burn out after 6 years of WoW.
