Time to put your big boy pants on SE.

P.S. My best wishes and prayers to the Japanese people.

    ... unbelievable.

Yes, because being an "IT professional" totally prepares you for how to deal with a 8.9 earthquake, multiple aftershocks no lower than 5.9, followed by a tsunami that destroys a huge portion of the region right? Being an IT professional prepares you for the side-effects that impact the entire region, not only the areas directly affected, right?

You do realize we're talking about a major cataclysmic event that struck Japan and has effected everyone in the region, not some minor inconvenient flooding due to heavy rainfall, right?

They've been frigging devastated over there.

While it might be difficult for some folks elsewhere in the world to comprehend this: A state of emergency in Japan > People being able to play a fucking video game.

What the hell is wrong with some of you people?

There are parts of the world that do not get hit by natural disasters. Yes there are companies that take such things into consideration. Again. We are talking about a large company. Not the Japanese or Japan. I've got hundreds of games I can go play or books I can read so the fact that their servers are down doesn't really bother me. Just simply pointing out the facts as they are.

I say it again... We're not talking about a minor setback here. We're talking about a major catastrophy over there.

    Try watching the news sometime.

I do watch the news and have been reading up on the current events over there. Who says their back ups and fail safes need to be over there.

    /facepalm

    Nevermind.

You don't get it. At all.

    Pathetic.

Again for some reason you seem to think I'm talking about Japan. I'm simply talking about a companies bad chocies. They are separate issues. So I think you are the one that simply does not get what I am talking about.

You have no freaking clue what the real situation over there is. You don't know the circumstances. You don't know the specifics under which SE has made this decision.

You're just sitting there, Mr. smug "IT Professional",  making presumptions and arrogant claims about something happening halfway around the world, and arrogantly claiming that somehow "you know better how to deal with the situation than they do".

    Get the fuck over yourself.

Then go find some empathy. If you know what that is.

The pot calls the kettle black.

They honestly should just leave it shut down. Put the game back in development stages and fix it and relaunch the game with a ps3 release. Give everyone who bought the PC version half off of the first expansion whenever it drops and free game time to entice people back. Most people don't ever give MMOs a second chance but with the Ps3 launch SE has another opportunity. Right now this game is just goint to slowly dwindle into a WAR or AOC type of state anyway.

Turning their servers off is not the bad choice. Not having back ups in an area that never/rarely suffers from natural disasters is.

Yeah. I had 8 ft of water and mud in my trailer for a couple weeks. When I got back home to see what I could get out, I noticed that my trailer buckled. My entire parish (county) was under water except for 4 buildings.

I truly want to stay out of this conversation and hope I don't come off as douchy or anything but I feel the need to change your incorrect / incomplete fact.  This was the largest recorded earthquake ever in japan, and the 5th or 7th largest ever recorded in the whole world ( I've read and heard both).  Just wanted to get that out there for the sake of clarity.

You don't have to be an IT Professional to have common sense, and common sense tells me that they're dealing with something far beyond what "having back-up power" would be appropriate for.

They are going to be dealing with the fallout from this for *years* over there. This isn't some minor event that's only going to set that region back a couple weeks.

Maybe , just maybe you shouldnt host online services people pay for in a region thats known for mother nature's wrath, yes i feel sorry for the japanese people, but ill be damned if im gonna send them any money or support a company thats to incompetent to make sure they have backup services.

I doubt a meltdown would be a global problem. Unless the containment dome has been comprimised, then the reactor will likely stay where it's at and not hurl radioactive particles into the upper atmosphere.

There's need to be a correction to your correction. It was the largest earthquake in Japan since they began recording the strength of earthquakes. There's no telling if there has been larger earthquakes, in terms of strength or energy released since there is no data to support that. Remember, the Japanese used to, and still do in some cases, build houses out of wood and paper. So that when there are earthquakes the collapse of buildings doesn't cause too much harm. Earthquakes have a been a problem for japanese civilization for over a millenia.

Even though I do see this as evidence that SE really is incompetent I'm not "angry" at SE or leaving the game. They just need to start making better choices.

LOL! Are you that DAFT??  Go hide in a corner and don't show yourself until you have grown an extra braincell... or two!

3 Nuclear Powerplants in Japan are nearing a meltdown!  You have any friggin' clue what that means?? DO YOU!!!!

Appearently not.  So take a hike and go hide in that corner I just put you in, stay there and don't show yourself around here anymore.

    My god! Some people are really unbelievably s t u p i d !

Yes. If they melt down that would be a global catastrophe. Again we are talking about seperate issues.

Seriously how old are you 10? Drop your lollie and mom wont get you a new one?

What. So now you are arguing that 3 nuclear power plants melting down and the resulting fallout wouldn't effect a large portion of the planet? Or are you trying to say that you were talking about technologies that exist to keep services such as FFXIV from being shut down?

I know quite a few japanese people since ive gone to school with some of them for a year, friendly people most of them, warm hearted, but then again, if the nuclear plants melt down, they will melt down, and no other region or country on planet earth would be able to harbor the billions of people from the asian region, what you should be more concerned about is not humanitary aid, but making sure billions of asian people don't flee to other regions, because im sure as hell not gonna give up everything i own or have paid for my entire life to harbor people i don't know.

Remind you , they built the nuclear plants them selves, well knowing mother nature can one day say enough is enough, and that entire region is known for serioust catastrophes.

Well no, we aren't. By your logic they should have built those reactors in some other safer country. But I guess you don't give a crap about technology that when it goes wrong can lay waste to huge tracts of land, but only care about your digital pacifier video games. When Silicon Valley finally goes down the pipe thanks to the Hayward Fault Zone can I call you up and bitch about how one of my whiz bang mindless fun toys is effected instead of being concerned about the thousands or even millions of lives that are damaged by that catastrophy?

Well if a meltdown occurs , the explosion will be of a nuclear size, and that would pretty much fuck up the entire asian region.

Really how ignorent are you? Turn on the news or go to a major website that has news and read and look at what is going on. Those plants are used for wait for it wait for it OH MY GOD electricity! Not to mention the fact that the aftershocks are on the magnitude of 6.0+.

So you can't play FFXIV for a week get over it stop blaming Square Enix it's not their fault all the events over there are going on. Square Enix is a Japanese company so naturally all their sever and information will be over in Japan. Blizzard is a US company and guess what their severs are in the US.

8.9 earthquake and Tsunami aside, I think they're going to have a more difficult time recovering from the partial (and potentially full) nuclear meltdown they're now faced with.  Northern Japan is going to have the strong possibility to turn into another Chernobyl... and they don't exactly have land area to spare.

You know i understood Xzen just fine, comming from the same field of work, but working in a hospital. It's funny how you all failed to undertsand him/her and are taking your anger/frustrations out on him/her out of your own ignorance. West Corp. in Omaha NE runs off of diesel engine 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. Co Sentry a hosting company in Omaha runs on diesel engines 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. He was making a simple point on companies that should know better when it comes to natural disasters. So why dont you all take your anger and stuff it back where the sun dont shine and read what he/she actually said, with some knowledge of how the people in the IT field deal with natural disasters.

On the note of Japan, I myself will talk to my company about what i can do about my contract at the hospital as i would like to join a relief group in japan.  For now i'm looking into getting a fund setup here in the farmer community to help out.

If any folks from Japan check out the forums and run across this post, many a friend's, family's, and my heart go out to you and yours.
