Who's to say they didn't have a backup that got wiped out too given it could just have easily (and honestly, more likely) been in Japan as well?
Keeping a local backup so that the servers don't have a random leap or change in connectivity. They could have backup offsite or internationally for other service aspects, but when dealing with users you'd want a certain degree of reliability and routine to the response time and function of a service.
Running Power to a backup. All well and good so long as the power suppliers aren't destroyed too. Aside from that, running power to non essential services while the nation is dealing with the loss of main power generators, some are likely all ready using backups, and others that may have just been outright severed?
Gos forbid a company takes a stance of responsibility and not waste extra energy via main or backup so they can help out others that are presently worse off.
There's nothing wrong with pointing out a flaw in the system, but there is plenty wrong with unconfirmed speculation on the status and nature of things.
They said this.
'... the power companies in Japan have encouraged everyone to cooperate by conserving as much energy as possible as it is feared there will not be enough power supply. Based on the current situation, we have decided to shut down the game servers temporarily...'
You know what that means? It's not talking about min or backup power, it's talking about consertavtion of what they've got. They're missing multiple energy sources right now, a couple of which are venting toxic. They aren't stopping their services because they can't support it. They're stopping it because they don't want to be an unnecessary burden on their own people.
And I'm guessing that's why people are calling the ones talking about redundancy, as if that were the issue, 'horrible people'.
Absolutely correct, to conserve what they got. It's something that ran across my mind as well. Something else ran across my mind as well. with this natural disaster there is going to be a huge money loss, one reason i want to get a fund going where im at, so if they had a backup system where a natural disaster isnt as likely they could still be collecting money. money from people who want to support the company that makes games they love. Right now i hope they shut down, get to their families, get their families to safety and help to begin to repair a country i have long since adored.
i see it as a 2 sided sword. run the company making money to help the economy, or 2 shut down, and let the people who have family effected go and get them safe and secured. whatever any company chooses to do, i am behind them. i wish i could be there now helping out.
The servers arent being shut down as a direct result of the tsunami right? I mean, its because of the power shortage due to the possible nuclear meltdowns ye?
Ok so a nuclear meltdown could in theory happen anywhere with a power plant... meaning SE should've made sure they had backup service in a country with no nuclear powerplants or dependable on nuclear power. Yes I see now what you meant all along O_o
You know i understood Xzen just fine, comming from the same field of work, but working in a hospital. It's funny how you all failed to undertsand him/her and are taking your anger/frustrations out on him/her out of your own ignorance. West Corp. in Omaha NE runs off of diesel engine 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. Co Sentry a hosting company in Omaha runs on diesel engines 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. He was making a simple point on companies that should know better when it comes to natural disasters. So why dont you all take your anger and stuff it back where the sun dont shine and read what he/she actually said, with some knowledge of how the people in the IT field deal with natural disasters.
On the note of Japan, I myself will talk to my company about what i can do about my contract at the hospital as i would like to join a relief group in japan. For now i'm looking into getting a fund setup here in the farmer community to help out.
If any folks from Japan check out the forums and run across this post, many a friend's, family's, and my heart go out to you and yours.
Seriously, thousands are dead, whole cities are washed fromt he face of the earth and you expect us to find the logic in this kids trainwreck? He's upset he can't play a video game for a week.
please point to where he said he cant play.
I hope you and he both suffer one millionth the pain Japan has suffered this last week. You want to parse english about this to win on the forum, seriously, they can't make a cancer bad enough for you two.
your english is just fine, your understanding of english is your problem, you wishing harm on others is your problem. other wise have a nice day not understanding that his post had nothing to do with the tradegy that was a major natural disaster, but a failing in a company's ability to handle a natural disaster.
I don't think I've been clear enough on this point, you're sub-human to me. Your opine is worthless, have your last word and we'll retend I never even spoke to you. To be perfectly clear on this, so there is no mistaking my intent, I hope you suffer. Thanks in advance.

All the guy said is that if SE woulda planned for something like this, they would locate servers in another country, outside their sphere of regional disaster.I dont see the guy saying anything ill willed against japan or their women. im the one that wants to gain from this disaster. i just want a japanese wife.
Anyone that has any work at all in any sorta IT field knows this. Customers need redundancy. multiple steps at that. Multiple steps that cover every aspect of what their computers, servers, etc need to run. That means several servers, several power supplies, several back up power suplies, several backup servers of back up data, and certainly data stored in several physical locations.
SE has learned a lesson here. They probably will locate fields of operation in multiple areas so they do not l ose shit tons of profit.

The only person filled with hate and desserves to reap it's consequences is you my friend. I wouldn't wish the loss of a family member, friend, or child on my worst enemy.
You're not my worst enemy, you're a random on the internet, but all the same you're so self-centered and naive I will make the effort to wish you ill. You will never learn so you may as well provide example for those who can. Don't act like you're taking some higher road, you're a sad little person and will always think of you first. Also, you bitched about me saying you couldn't play then responded with a fantasy post that isn't even a paraphrase of what my two sentences contained.
I wish you the best regardless of how much you might hate me. I learn all the time. It's actually a hobby of mine. Actually my family comes first not me. I never complained about not being able to play.
Again, I retract my statement about you not playing. You are an even worse person for it now. You have no vested interest in it yet you still find time to complain about it while thousands suffer. Super win, champ.
I already dontated money to Red Cross specifically for the recovery and relief in Japan as well as looking to volunteer. What are you doing? Even if you do something to help just to spite me some good will come out of this.
Ugh. This has nothing to do with SE not having backups. The Japanese government needs power for more important things than game servers right now. You know, stuff like hospitals and temporary shelters, heat, water. Seriously, read WHY they are shutting down their servers. It is to help people that are dying and in need of basic human necessities.
Please lock this thread. The ignorance here is beyond ugly.

What you said has already been said, and I haven't seen 1 poster fault SE for shutting their servers down in a call to aid their country in the recovery efforts. The only complaint that has been brought up in this thread is that SE doesn't have an offsite backup location for their game servers. That complaint had nothing to do with the game itself, the tsunami, Japan, power plants, or anything besides SE's bad business practices.
Edited for clarification.

First off we are talking about a large company here not the Japanese people. As a professional working in the IT and telecom industry this is just a sad excuse to mask their incompetence. Anyone working in the industry knows that if your a big company like SE you should have back up systems and fail safes in place to make sure the service you are providing doesn't go down for prolonged periods. Even though I do see this as evidence that SE really is incompetent I'm not "angry" at SE or leaving the game. They just need to start making better choices. Time to put your big boy pants on SE.
P.S. My best wishes and prayers to the Japanese people.
... unbelievable.
Yes, because being an "IT professional" totally prepares you for how to deal with a 8.9 earthquake, multiple aftershocks no lower than 5.9, followed by a tsunami that destroys a huge portion of the region right? Being an IT professional prepares you for the side-effects that impact the entire region, not only the areas directly affected, right?
You do realize we're talking about a major cataclysmic event that struck Japan and has effected everyone in the region, not some minor inconvenient flooding due to heavy rainfall, right?
They've been frigging devastated over there.
While it might be difficult for some folks elsewhere in the world to comprehend this: A state of emergency in Japan > People being able to play a fucking video game.
What the hell is wrong with some of you people?
There are parts of the world that do not get hit by natural disasters. Yes there are companies that take such things into consideration. Again. We are talking about a large company. Not the Japanese or Japan. I've got hundreds of games I can go play or books I can read so the fact that their servers are down doesn't really bother me. Just simply pointing out the facts as they are.

There are many companies that have offsite back ups in other countries yes.
Yes I would say multi national corporations cerntainly do have data centers in differnet countries. I am assuming the corporation is multi national. Sorta like SE is. Now am I the sorta person that works for a multi national corporation? No. I work for a multi regional corpatation that has facilities in several parishes in this state and several counties in other states. As they own properties in several states in the southern region of the united states of america.
Am I fiscally smart enough to pretend to know how to run SE better than their ceo's? Not really. Just musing on what could of been done to maximise profit for a company that really only cares about profit. Am i blaming SE for anything? No. I appllaud their cares fir the people. Shutting off their power needs in hopes of helping the people as a whole.
I just dont agree that another poster in this thread is somehow being rude or uncaring for saying truthes of IT related businesses.

Japan is never going to recover and the worst is yet to come. No matter how science or other self proclaimed "educated standards" will try to turn it, these are the last days. What's happening now has been written decades ago.
You'll see that FF being shut down is really absolutely none of the problems in the whole scheme of things and times. But then, if people wouldn't be to ignorant, denying and plain stupid to recognise this, it wouldn't altogether happen in first place.

Japan will recover. This is not some biblical retribution from whatever voices talk to you in your mind. This is a disaster that people recover from all the time. I just look at my own state when I lost personally my own house that insurance screwed me on and went without power for a month. I never thought things would go back to normal. Hell even renting some ghetto apartmentin shitville seemed non viable. Prices for studio apartments in ghetto towns sky rocketed, gas sky rocketed, energy sky rocketed. THe whole economy suffered. Yet here I sit on my brand new sandy bridge with my 2 thousand dollar ibanez in my lap argueing with strangers on the internet. If louisiana can recover.... the admitted shit hole of the south.... im damn sure japan will recover.
Its a terible disaster thousend of japanse people died and some here biggering over who is right or wrong unbelievable about game shutting down or of its incompetence bah:(
SHAME ON YOU.
I hope many will survive and recover dont matter what part of the world or what race you come from, its sad this happens.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

If they did even if they had to shut down their local site to save power they could change over to the back ups in the remote location where they do not have to save power.

I'm guessing you didn't read the thread.
Are offsite backups typically in other countries?
There are many companies that have offsite back ups in other countries yes.
Has SE stated that they dont have an offsite backup or is that an assumption based on the fact that they are shutting down service for a week?
Japan is never going to recover and the worst is yet to come. No matter how science or other self proclaimed "educated standards" will try to turn it, these are the last days. What's happening now has been written decades ago.
You'll see that FF being shut down is really absolutely none of the problems in the whole scheme of things and times. But then, if people wouldn't be to ignorant, denying and plain stupid to recognise this, it wouldn't altogether happen in first place.
Please take your doomsday bs somewhere else.
Power and peace to everyone in Japan my hear goes out to you and I hope for a quick recovery.
Also you are crazy.....
My theme song.
