I'm guessing you didn't read the thread. What you said has already been said, and I haven't seen 1 poster fault SE for shutting their servers down in a call to aid their country in the recovery efforts. The only complaint that has been brought up in this thread is that SE doesn't have an offsite backup location for their game servers. That complaint had nothing to do with the game itself, the tsunami, Japan, power plants, or anything besides SE's bad business practices.
Edited for clarification.
Are offsite backups typically in other countries?
There are many companies that have offsite back ups in other countries yes.
Has SE stated that they dont have an offsite backup or is that an assumption based on the fact that they are shutting down service for a week?
If they did even if they had to shut down their local site to save power they could change over to the back ups in the remote location where they do not have to save power.
Ok so you are in fact assuming this. Which I believe is the root cause to all the hate you are getting. Your posts are leading people to think that you prioritize capitalism over humanity. Would you like to clarify?
Isnt the name of the thread "FFXIV shutting down for a week"? Arent we allowed to discuss the game shutting down for a week?
Is this thread called "Japan struck by a national disaster"? If that was the name of the thread wouldnt we feel more obliged to discuss the disaster itself.
I didnt know people should not discuss the game sutting down in a thread about the game shutting down. I thought holy rollers knew this was not a thread discussing purely the state of japan and the plight of its citizens.
Japan will recover. This is not some biblical retribution from whatever voices talk to you in your mind. This is a disaster that people recover from all the time. I just look at my own state when I lost personally my own house that insurance screwed me on and went without power for a month. I never thought things would go back to normal. Hell even renting some ghetto apartmentin shitville seemed non viable. Prices for studio apartments in ghetto towns sky rocketed, gas sky rocketed, energy sky rocketed. THe whole economy suffered. Yet here I sit on my brand new sandy bridge with my 2 thousand dollar ibanez in my lap argueing with strangers on the internet. If louisiana can recover.... the admitted shit hole of the south.... im damn sure japan will recover.
I was just about to guess you were from there from previous posts. I'm glad life has gotten better for you, I wasnt in a position to do much back then to help out. always a big lump of pain in the heart. Everyone will recover in a fashion, humans are like that, but nothing will ever be the same, for people in any disaster area. They will rebuild, they will restart families, farms, businesses will begin to produce. it's a matter of how much you as a person(not the post im replying to) to decide you can afford to give. It's been said before and probably needs to be said again, everything counts.
So lets end some of the forum hate here, and start figuring out what you can do to help.

I do not put one in front of the other. They are separate issues. I can talk about either.
Japan is never going to recover and the worst is yet to come. No matter how science or other self proclaimed "educated standards" will try to turn it, these are the last days. What's happening now has been written decades ago.
You'll see that FF being shut down is really absolutely none of the problems in the whole scheme of things and times. But then, if people wouldn't be to ignorant, denying and plain stupid to recognise this, it wouldn't altogether happen in first place.
Please take your doomsday bs somewhere else.
DOOOOOM!!!

Fair enough. So then let me ask you. If you ran a big company like SE. And one day you wake up to find your entire country about to be knocked back to a 3rd world status. Which do you prioritize: Your company's bottom line or the overall well being of your country? Not saying choose only one or the other. Im saying choose one first, then the other.
Someone made a post about something specific regarding servers etc.. and everyone freaks out like that is the only thought the person has. The thread is titled "FFXIV shutting down for a week!" Not "Japan in Ruins".
Being insensitive does not make the point invalid. Arguing about the guy being a jerk because he doesn't care is invalid. He is not discussing the loss of life. . how people feel standing in line for hours hoping to get food even though they may not be able to. How they are hand pumping petrol because of the lack of power etc.
If he wanted to talk about that he would have made a thread about that or posted on CNN or something. This is an MMORPG site and he posted something relevant to MMORPGs.
Obviously you guys are compassionate and intelligent but the emotional response seems a little off to me. He never said he didn't care he just tried to keep the thread on topic. When he says "I am not talking about that" he isn't saying "I don't care about that". Wishing him a slow painful death certainly doesn't make you any better in my eyes.

Maximise profits by having leadership and data centers in america. Thereby, ensuring profit in the event Japan goes under. Once whatever profit margin has been exceeded, set forth by the board of directors, maximise charitable funding for those in duress.
One doesnt exclude the other. I know I am beating a dead horse here, i just find the issue sorta moot. A company can worry about its bottom line (employees and their families) and the county as a whole (charities and funds for non employees)

Call my loved ones > Organise company teams and funds to relief efforts for employees and locals > Power company orders power reserve > Switch to back up > Continue to aid and relief efforts.

Yeah but whos gonna run it? All those employees needed to still keep your business up and running. Are they not allowed to be with their families too? What about all of the pain and suffering through the loss of friends, family and homes? Would you not allow them a single week to deal with a catastrophe of this level?
That little plan of action you typed out... how much time would that take? A few hours? A couple days? Why not a week even for your own plan?
First off we are talking about a large company here not the Japanese people. As a professional working in the IT and telecom industry this is just a sad excuse to mask their incompetence. Anyone working in the industry knows that if your a big company like SE you should have back up systems and fail safes in place to make sure the service you are providing doesn't go down for prolonged periods. Even though I do see this as evidence that SE really is incompetent I'm not "angry" at SE or leaving the game. They just need to start making better choices. Time to put your big boy pants on SE.
P.S. My best wishes and prayers to the Japanese people.
The reason they are turning them off is to conserve power. Thats what happens when you shut down 4 nuclear power plants and loose numerous others due to a tsunami.
The game isn't lost/broken they are simply trying to do all they can to help their country. That takes the form of turning off their servers so they don't chew up power.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Despite the earthquake in Japan, which sucks, maybe FFXIV won't come back online. It would give SE a good excuse to try to save their falling King-RPG status.

You do realize they have offices in LA and UK right?
They also service customers all over the world. Unfortunately they chose to centralize their servers in one region instead of diversifying like most companies. This has also been brought up many time PRIOR to this disaster, and has been questioned as a poor quality of service option...yet they still didnt setup servers in the different regions they support.
It sucks for folks in Japan, my heart goes out to them, but as a business...especially a worldwide multi-million dollar corp this is simply insane.

A good remote back up would likely not have many employees that would be effected by the disaster. To switch to back up should only take a matter of hours. To get relief and aid going might actually take longer due to logistics.
You know i understood Xzen just fine, comming from the same field of work, but working in a hospital. It's funny how you all failed to undertsand him/her and are taking your anger/frustrations out on him/her out of your own ignorance. West Corp. in Omaha NE runs off of diesel engine 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. Co Sentry a hosting company in Omaha runs on diesel engines 100% of the time, the power companies are the backup system. He was making a simple point on companies that should know better when it comes to natural disasters. So why dont you all take your anger and stuff it back where the sun dont shine and read what he/she actually said, with some knowledge of how the people in the IT field deal with natural disasters.
On the note of Japan, I myself will talk to my company about what i can do about my contract at the hospital as i would like to join a relief group in japan. For now i'm looking into getting a fund setup here in the farmer community to help out.
If any folks from Japan check out the forums and run across this post, many a friend's, family's, and my heart go out to you and yours.
Well good for you. But he/she did come off sounding very insensitive and ignorant, considering what has happened.
i didnt get that, but i did from the people who replied to his/her posts. especially all the lame ass jokes about FFIV. its also funny the same idiots who attacked him thought he was even talking about the game, when he said the company SE. people need to learn to read.
edit: go ahead and report this post, ill be glad for the warning or ban. Fing morons
Because you don't understand a fecking thing either!
SE could have kept the services up and running! But with a meltdown going on in 3 nuclear powerplants, the Japanese government has issued a plea to all (technology) companies, including Square Enix, to shut down all NON ESSENTIAL services !
I know you heavily addicted gaming individuals are having a terrible withdrawal syndrome right now, but I hate to break it to you, a MMO game is not an essential service!
How stupid are you to even try compare a Hospital to a Online Gaming Service! For crying out loud! Are you that daft as well??!
So get your heads straight and wake up in reality and look at the magnitude of the catastrophe that is going on right now in Japan for christ sake!

You realize most of us talking arent talking from gaming prospective we are talking from a business perspective? I haven't played FFXIV since its launch. However, I do currently work in the networking field and thats what most of us are discussing in regards to SE.
If you service clients worldwide, you usually have a datacenter at your regional hubs, along with a backup datacenter at those regional hubs. Worst case scenario your datacenter is destroyed, you swap to backup, if that datacenter goes down, you then spread the load to your other regional offices.
We realize the magnitude of the catastrophe, however, as business minded individuals we see another catastrophe here of epic proportions when it comes to redundancy.

Proof another Idiot hasnt read the whole thread, knows little of whats being talked about in the thread. so please go back to what ever hole you crawled out of or ACTUALLY read the WHOLE thread and educate yourself on the world of IT and its many facits.
FYI no one is complaining about them taking their servers down to conserve energy, we are complaining that a company the size of SE failed to protect itself from a natural disaster. Something you would know if you had actually read the full thread.

Ok, well then. When the next hurricane hits and wipes out my twins house. My twin is one I love moreso than anyone else. When he is stuck in some lake somewhere with no car, no water, no power, no food and he watches the dead corpse of his beloved wife float by, what will I tell my boss? My love has just left me. I am all alone in a world of shit and dispair. I need to leave work. I need to go find my brother. My ex that left me so long ago, maybe Ill look for her too. My poor bird, she mates fo rlife and Im her mate. She will never allow anyone else to care for her, My cat will starve to death.
Im gonna be stuck on lockdown at a hospital just to make sure that nurse and doctor can chart a patient's medicine. Ive already stated I dont give a shit about that patient, I only care about my brother and my pets. Yet I will not be allowed to leave my job or I will be terminated...... we dont say fired as its not PC...
If I get terminated, there is no more money for me. My pets will starve to death, no one will help my twin get pay for food or electricity. The region has just been devistated. If I lose this job, how can I be sure that I will have a new job?
I will not be allowed to visit my loved ones. My job will force me to stay in some hospital room untill everything is back to normal. How dare the coporate devil keep me on lock down? Maybe its just life. Someone will take charge and force an employee to do what needs to be done. The simple answer is this. If it was a building with leadership capabilities in a non affected location. No one would have to choose. The employee that just had his house destroyed by a tsunami can go look for his wife and kids and still have a pay check to rely on next month when he has to pay for his son's meal?
My case is different. I signed an oath. Even as someone who does not directly deal with patients. I swore that I would remain and do everything I can to support a doctor and nurse and help a patient in anyway I can. Even if my job is simply supporting software and hardware for that wrist band lable printer. I gotta do it until my shift ends and I am relieved by a poster stating he wants to fly to battle in that hospital and relieve an employee so they can be with loved ones.

Square Enix does NOT host localized regional servers. They never have! As everyone around the globe is playing on the same servers.
This was both a business decision as a .....oh wait.... here it comes..... a community decision! The FF community do not want localized servers!
AGAIN! Square Enix could have kept the servers running, but they answered to their Governments plea to shut down all NON ESSENTIAL services !
A lot of fucking stupid people in this thread... Remind me never to let anyone in IT be in charge of money; I guess that's why software development houses have such a high failure rate.
Suggesting that SE have dupulicate servers somewhere else in the world on the off chance a major catastrophe hits their location is insane and if I, working in HR--and I do, noticed comments like this in my background checks I'd throw your resume out faster than I normally do... Which is usually within seconds... Eh, I'm not good with metaphors.
In case you haven't noticed, SE makes and runs games, not run a mission critial service. They aren't incompent for their handling of this situation unless you think CCP should have a back up Trainqulity sitting idle in case a volcano springs up in their neighborhood: Their server being, literally, one of the most powerful and expensive privately owned servers in the world. Or if you think Blizzard would give two shits about being out of service for a week or two should a flood, hurricane or earthquake hit one of their data centers(all of their data centers are vulernable to one or more of those) you are also fooling yourself.

For christ sake! Their data centers are not affected nor damaged!
You can have 10 different data centers spread out all over Japan, but if 3 nuclear powerplants are undergoing a Meltdown and the government issueing a plea to all companies.... what you expect them to do??
Are you really THAT serious that a friggin' game company needs to take a dissaster of this magnitude into account and set up a whole data center into a different region....... doing absolutely nothing but draining huge amounts of money in upkeep bills..... just in case a total catastrophe of this magnitude happens, so they can tranfer all gaming services to this back up data center.
And all....just so you addicted individuals can continue your addiction??
You guys really all have completely lost your mind and lost every single bit of sense!
I'm trying to figure out if you even understand what you are trying to argue about. it reminds me of a dog barking at a stick, running around that stick and continuing to bark at the stick.
Not sure anyone cares if they decided to keep the servers in japan. what everyone who has been in IT for most of their life is saying, is that its really stupid to put all your servers in one location, BECAUSE of natural disasters. you can put the servers in japan and run them from japan, you can then add a datacenter in america and run them from japan. all you need is a small crew here to maintain the servers. where servers are doesnt really matter. its not a community decision, its the head of ITs natural disaster department decision to what he will with the server given the money and power from upper managment. you have no say where the server goes.
my cousin's husband runs the IT department for HP. You can bet your ass he has servers all over to handle natural disaters and non natural disasters. Open your eyes and realise you are takling apple to oranges.

Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!

That little plan of action you typed out... how much time would that take? A few hours? A couple days? Why not a week even for your own plan?
The reason they are turning them off is to conserve power. Thats what happens when you shut down 4 nuclear power plants and loose numerous others due to a tsunami.
The game isn't lost/broken they are simply trying to do all they can to help their country. That takes the form of turning off their servers so they don't chew up power.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Despite the earthquake in Japan, which sucks, maybe FFXIV won't come back online. It would give SE a good excuse to try to save their falling King-RPG status.
He who keeps his cool best wins.

Yeah but whos gonna run it? All those employees needed to still keep your business up and running. Are they not allowed to be with their families too? What about all of the pain and suffering through the loss of friends, family and homes? Would you not allow them a single week to deal with a catastrophe of this level?

lol i concede. You are a robot.

Yeah, saw an announcement in the chat box when I was online last night. It zipped by and my first thought was "what are they talking about?".
It's just so tragic all those lives lost. Just makes me want to go over there and do something.
