Is this just a "filler" MMO?

Well, fun is subjective and it is something I most definitely don't experience when logging on. I'm happy for the people that do, however. It means they aren't stuck in MMO limbo like me.

    Yeah, of course.

At $10 per month (six month founder's pricing) it's a good middle ground at a price that I feel is reasonable for MMOs.  Personally I don't expect any of the big MMOs* to be released before the end of the year.  That six months will get me half way there.  That's not too shabby at this price tag.

After that?  Who knows.  I'll most likely be bored with Rift and we'll probably have another 7 or 8 months after that before any good information** is released.  I'll just have to wait and see, but that's then so I'll think about it when I get there.

    * I see the (potentially) big MMOs to be: World of Darkness, GW2, Secret World, Tera, & SW:TOR

** What is "good information"?  IMO, it's info that is not filtered through the bias of PR, fanboi fanaticism, or one-sided haters.

Well, not gonna say I didnt warn you 6 months guys lol ;)

I have no idea why anyone tried this game in 2+ betas and thought there would be be 6 months play in it... It was obvious from it's blatantly limited content (which is the curse of the modern 100% themepark game at launch) that it would be done in 4-6 weeks for all but the most casual or those that have the stomach to run through it again on an alt (the alt guys would probably be looking at about, what, 8 weeks?).

A lot of the more rabid defenders of this game on this board were vets of 1 or maybe 2 betas, and at that point it still seemed fun. I predicted back then though that once the sheen started to wear off we would see a ton of 'bored now' posts.

so, what are some good lotto numbers for next week? because you can obviously read the future.

    hehe cliche response no.1 :)

The fact is I did say it and have been proven right by the growing number (already) of bored posts.

Can't help you with randomly generated numbers, sorry to say, but all the signs were there in beta for those that were looking.

i predict that EVERY game that will ever be spoken of (in mass) on this site, will be hated by someone, trolled to death, the subject of many flames wars, with ridicule towards those that feel differently. and i will never act like such a child, that i feel the need to come back just to say 'i told you so'.

    I told you so.

No wonder many burn out and are disappointed when a game doesn't give you 12 hours a day content for three years or more.

I guarantee GW2 and TOR will suffer the same fate. People will burn thru the stories and max a character out in a week and then cry that the game isn't a full game or it's just a filler game till Copernicus or ArcheAge or whatever the next flavor of the week is.

Yeah, there will always be speed levelers that misses most of the content and even more of the fun.

If think they will be a lot more upset with TOR than Rift actually, since Bioware said they put most work on the journey, not the goal.

GW2 is kinda different aqnd a lot more focus on different kinds of PvP than TOR and Rift so I am guessing it will fare a little better. What people will whine on is that you can't get over powered raid gear like in other games instead.

Rift is a complete game. The problem is just that if you are totally burnt out on Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO this game is too similar to keep you occupied for long. Take a break from the genre or play Eve or something for a few months instead.

Rift can't both cateer to people who want a Wow but with prettier graphics and better character customization and at the same time make people who are incredible tired of that concept happy.

You just can't please everyone. Rift do what it does rather well. Only bad thing really is that they call themselves "next gen", it isn't really true and it makes some people expect something completely different.

    Where did they state this?

7 year WoW player and I think Rift will make me put the WoW crack down. I and about 8 of my guildies have decided we are done with WoW. I have stated this before I will again if you think a game that does somthing completely new will kill WoW your naive. WoW killed EQ by doing what EQ did just better. Rift does what WoW does... just better.

WoW killed EQ by doing what EQ did just better

EQ killed EQ, WoW had very little to do with it. EQ had 8 expansions out before WoW even came out and the populations were already tanking.

If any new games are going to kill WoW they will almost certainly be different than WoW. SWTOR will steal some who would prefer a sci fi MMO and GW2 will steal a big chunk because they can drop their monthly fee and it offers very different gameplay.

The real WoW killer will likely be Titan though.

Yes, Rift is just a filler MMO. I'm starting to count multiple threads regarding rift claiming that ENTIRE guilds are falling off from the Rift "wagon" as they get more and more bored due to the repetitive nature of the game. Not only this, but there isn't any replayability to the game.

Unfortunately enough, it seems Rift is merely around to satisfy many people's need for a "polished" MMO, but not necessarily a good one. Current MMO's that are HIGH on the list of looking forward to are ArcheAge, Secret World, and APB:Reloaded. Greanted APB isn't REALLY an MMO, but more of a matchmaking based 3D lobby. Regardless, Rift is just a more polished, and graphically updated, World of Warcraft unfortunately :(.

I, personally, see this as a filler MMO. It's not really bringing anything new to the table. I don't consider it next-gen either.

I consider all games fillers. I play a game until I get bored or when something else comes out that looks fun.

  • Merlin1977Merlin1977 Member Posts: 168

For me Rift is just a filler, maybe because i'm starting to get bored of mmo's atm.  Played mmo's for over 6 years, mainly in WoW, but have played Warhammer Online, LOTR, Age of Conan, and now Rift, to me they are all the same, some are more polished then others but essentially all mmo's are now going down the same route.  I could be delusional in my judgement but for me they all feel the same to play.

I should have defined the poll and my question better. Of course, every game could be considered a "filler" if you look at it that way. However, I mean in the sense that you know you are only playing this until something better comes out. A lot of people like to stick with an MMO if they really like it.

In fact, this thread is proof of exactly what is wrong with the MMO community, and why games are becoming so dependent on instant gratification. People only look to play a game for a short period until something new comes out. What happened to the days where you liked a game so much you would play it for years on end? This is what I'm referring to in the poll... do you see yourself playing Rift for years to come or do you see it as a time filler until the game you THINK you will play for a long time comes out.

    "Filler?"

    Aren't they all?

My favorite MMO of all time was Dark Age of Camelot and I played it 2 years. It "filled" those 2 years pretty well.

LOTRO "filled" a year for me

WOW has "filled" about 1.5 years spread out over 6 years

    Asheron's Call "filled" 1

    D&D Online "filled" 1

I have played Rift, after which I quickly re-opened my EQ2 account. Ever hear the saying "misery loves company"? Well I do belive thats whats going on here. I can not tell you how many of my friends that pre-ordered this game tried to get me to order it, and now they are not playing it. This game is finished and polished, but there is really nothing more to it then that. Honestly I would play Xsyon again before playing Rift, and Xsyon is a very unfinished game. The reason for this though is Xsyon being not finished or ploished is at least something different where as Rift is just more of the same. If you like Rift you would love WoW if you do not like either then play EQ, EQ2, or SWG.

Over saturation of the MMO genre. So many MMO's coming out all the time. Back in the EQ days there were hardly any MMO's around. Wow came out and that was fresh and new. Now nothing is really new. I just happen to love Rift alot. But I regress. I also look for the newest MMO around the corner. It is hard to say what I am waiting for though. I only wish I knew. I do know one thing. I will play Rift for a good long while. But I will always keep my eye's open for the next best thing. BTW, anyone else wish that Vanguard could have been a bit better? I REALLY think that is the model of MMO all new dev's should look to in the future!!

Elock, you realize that there are BILLIONS of people on our planet right? 12million is NOTHING, and if World of Warcraft was as good as people say it is, it'd completely dominate the market YET it does not.

There are 12million "beginners" to the MMO genre playing World of Warcraft. It's known as the "Gate MMO", where you begin your MMO experience nowadays. It brings more people into our gaming genre than any other MMO. Yet, more people leave the game each year because of how easy it is, and people require a challenge so they look for a newer..."better" MMO.

With that said, pointing to 12 million subscribers as "evidence" of it's greatness is a fallacy. I just wanted to point that out sir :)!

This game is an MMO.  It's the best MMO since Aion, LOTRO before that, EQ2 before that.

  • Faran_BrygoFaran_Brygo Member UncommonPosts: 19

I've been having a blast with Rift. Of course, this is said by a person who has never played WoW. Lotro was my first real MMO (well, except for a brief experience with Ultima Online in the day). I am mostly burned out on Lotro after 3+ years though and definitely not a fan of Turbine's move to the F2P model. As long as Rift remains subscription-based, I could see myself playing for a long time.

I went so far as to apply for a hardcore guild (and got in). Ended up not purchasing the game at all. I knew it was going to be a filler. Instead, I picked up a second job. :)

I've been playing fillers for 3 years now. It's sad that nothing has held onto my interest yet.

  • The_KorriganThe_Korrigan Member RarePosts: 3,460

36.9+26.1=63% thinking it's a filler... and we are only 3 weeks after launch.

Looking good for Rift so far... :P

I have just stopped playing this game last week at around level 20 odd, at first i was enjoying it a lot, then the further i got into it the duller it got.

When i reached Gloamwood no one on my server was doing RIFTs they were just appearing and staying there for ages, taking one on solo was basically pointless too. So without the dynamic events happening it was just a less fun version of WoW for me.

All this game has done so far is make me want to play WoW again, which i quit 4 months ago.

No games of any genre are really doing anything for me now, just about everywhere you go its more of the same.

    Evening all,

    Faded

Way to take my words and twist them to suit your needs.  I was pointing to the logic about forum posts and negativity.  Billions of people on the planet is irrelevant to this discussion.  It would only be relevant if ALL of them played MMORPGs.  All of them do not.  Second, 12 million people playing 1 game in a genre(which by the way points to a dominating marketshare FOR NOW) may not mean the game is GREAT it means it's popular thereby negating unfounded negative forum posts which is what this reply is all about.  Just wanted to point that out.

Rift is just as fun as WoW and quite popular therefore people will hate on it JUST to hate on it.  Seems to be a fad among people to gripe about the Big Kid on the block/in school etc.  Personally, I just want to get away from the sheep mindset and find the people with REAL opinions and subjective viewpoints.

  • nickster29nickster29 Member Posts: 486

Usually I find that most non game-specific forums generally have a negative vibe when discussing a game that has launched since most of the people who enjoy said game are usually on the game's forums or playing the game.

Taking the results of this poll gives us an idea of how the active community in this forum feels about RIFT, but that is it.  It is hard the justify extrapolating the results of this poll to the entire MMO community.  All in all, I personally find RIFT to be an interesting game, mostly due the class / soul system.  I was also tired of WoW, so that may also effect my biased feelings towards RIFT.

I personally will continue playing RIFT even after GW2 comes out, but I will definately end up plaing both.
