I have played many MMORPGs and I must say that everything from user interface to class-based roles (healer, DPS, Tank) this game has, has been done by other MMORPGs so there is almost nothing new here.
Only things worth mentioning is the flexible soul system which does not able you to mix any classes (a tank is still a tank and cannot be a tank/mage) which is fun for maybe a couple of hours before you realise it is simply the same standard tank, dps, healing abilities spread out on several sub-classes with alot of redundancy.
Rifts is also a novelty but one that also wears out quickly. Basically all of them are random mob spawns that grow in dificulty depending on several factors. But from what I have experienced, they always despawn, no matter what. Seems there is a timer of sort.
Other than that this game is simply a equivalent of another generic Cola, except Coca Cola (=WoW) is the one that most people will buy and most people will go back to once the novelty of a new fresh drink has worn of.
PS: Yes this is a counter to the other post here. {mod edit}
Problem with this is, it's not a good counter. If your arguement is that it does what other games have done it, but better... well, if you think for a moment you'll see why that's not a good argument. I would never go as far as saying games like WoW are bad, especially one with so much polish. The reason for this is that in saying that, you're basically saying WoW is a bad game. Well, unfortunately there's over 10 million people who disagree with you. That's a very large number. You can say that Rift doesn't appeal to you for 'these' reasons, but to say Rift is BAD, in my opinion, it's just silly. All you're doing here is trolling and attempting to incite arguments with baseless accusations. Something like this would have gotten me Mod warnings in the past, and potentially suspended.
Want to know what bad games are? Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, Dark and Light, Mortal Online... games like this. There are ways to prove it, with factual evidence.
Yeah kinda have to agree with some other people here, It's almost like you are on some personal mission to make everyone believe RIFT is the anti-christ or something. Just about every post you have in the rift forum is slamming rift or making sure people know that it doesn't do anything innovative. I think you've made yourself very clear on your opinions and that's great. But to do it ad nauseum is getting to be a bit annoying and honestly quite disrespectful to those who enjoy RIFT. I mean in all honesty if you were forced to come here day in and day out then I could say ok to you constantly moaning and complaining of it non-innovation, but no one is FORCING you to come to a forum that is ABOUT RIFT and complain, again, ad nauseum about your opinions and feeling about it. We get it, you don't like it...but seriously stop this BS act of trying to make people who enjoy the game "see the light" and leave the game. They will leave when they stop enjoying the game.
I will say this about Rift, Trion has been quick with their updates and they have something planned this week. So i say given time Rift could become more than what it currently is. I think the biggest problem with the game is the lvling, it's bit too fast imo. If you pvp alot while lvling you will outlevel your questing zones. Heck i was lvling just off grinding mobs for crafting mats, and that was to be a break from lvling and questing, lol
I've found that it's hard to outlevel your zones too much because when you're on the low end of the level range, you can't do much damage. It's very hard to be competitive in warfronts due to that. Usually what I do is level up through the first 5-6 levels and then do some warfronts for a few levels when I'm more competitive. This way, I'm seperating my play time between different activities. Thus, not burning myself out on anything. I find some time in between said activities to make sure my crafting skills are up to par for my level as well. Obviously there is the dynamic Rift system, but I lump that in with PvE quest leveling. I'd hope that Rift will add some other things later in development. Such as seige warfare, territory control, and just in general; a reason for Open PvP other than the fact that you CAN attack the other faction.
I haven't gotten into dungeions, but that's mostly due to me not being at level cap. I've been taking my time, and having fun too.
I'll say that I enjoy Rift. It is a typical MMO, and there are others similar to it. This one looks pretty, has a new world, and new classes. Its fresh and has a good population. Saying that it is very bad is just saying that the themepark fantasy MMO is bad in general. This website is called mmorpg.com, if you are not a fan of MMOs then I really don't see the need to come and post here attempting to stir up trouble. Go play whatever you enjoy, and let the folks having fun with the game do so.
In response to the people complaining that they have multiple 50s now and have no reason to log in, don't play the game like it is your second life then. I played in beta, and also since launch with my girlfriend and a couple other friends. We log in for a few hours each week (10-15) and play the game until we start to get bored. Then we log off and go do something else or play one of the other games we enjoy. I can guarantee that nearly any type of MMO, or any game for that matter will become boring after a month when it is all you do.
What the OP should be saying is it's a straight gear grind. Even though Expert dungeons have some fun boss moments, it wears thin after you have to do each of them a dozen times or more. The purpose? To get geared for the next set of Expert dungeons that you'll run a dozen times or more each. Why? To be able to run GSB as often as possible.
PvP is the same model except you replace "dungeons" with "warfronts" and "bosses" with "no-lifers in very tall hats".
To counter this all- it's an MMO. This is what MMOs do. Isn't that sad? Shouldn't we demand more than a gear grind? Hell when a game starts to feel like work you should just stop playing. Which is what I've done. I really wish I could say differently.
Teala posted a blog about this not that long ago. Funny more and more are finally figuring out exactly what they want "more of" out of a MMO.
I like Rift, there for i play it, every week i get a call from my bro in law, who tries to tell me how good cata is, and i have to explain that for me, Rift does it better. If im going to play a game where i grind gear, im going to do it in a game i like. Hell, if you look at Xsyon, its kinda the same deal, craft to get better armor/weapons instead of grind instances to get better armor/weaopns. both are a grind but it's whatever the person is more capable of dealing with.

LOL,
I remember when this was all (most, if not all) was said about World of Warcraft comparing it to EverQuest......I wander what became of that World of Warcraft game and how it is doing.......LOL
I dont think Rifts is a 'bad' game, but I dont think its a next gen game either. It has its fun moments but for an old gamer you quickly recognize you have been doing this for a while and the glamour of it all starts to wear.
I am rather interested in seeing if Rift gains some long term to it. If that then I wonder less on the rift aspect (would not surprise me at all if the burning legion started popping up all over Azeroth) but on the class trees openess. With Cataclysm WoW moved the exact opposite direction as Rifts, so if Rifts has some long term I wonder what WoW will do in regards to that.
Back to the topic though, Rifts is squarely in the WoW generation park. If you enjoy WoW, you will enjoy Rifts especially if you want to see something other than Azeroth. If you dont like WoW, Rifts will likely not be anything more than a simple diversion in your quest for the 'perfect' mmorpg..
The game is just not good. Too small, too simple, too redundant, and very much way too stupid. The only challenge is getting from point a to point b without getting knocked off your stupid looking mount by a mob some 20 levels below you.
The game is geographically TINY, EQ2 is a continent like North America, Rift takes place in an area the size of the state of Maine. Without the lakes. (Never played wow)
{mod edit}
At first glance the soul tree looks marvelous! But you should quickly realize, as we have that 95% of the spells are redundant copies with different icons. You might think a water based spell would do more damage to a flaming mob than a fire spell, but no, just the same spell different icon. Spell effects are SMALL too, so there is no reason to waste points on the linear spell tree, and you do not really get to pick and choose spells or upgrade them individually. Just plop points with a moments consideration and you will be as good as ya can be. Simple.
Graphics are horrid! Non fluid movement, stupid childish mounts, a huge disappointment when you consider the hype. I have seen much better, and very little worse. The games graphics are just, enhh, nothing to crow about. Did I mention the mounts are just freaking STUPID A TWO HEADED TURTLE AND A TWO TAILED COW, please! The latter might have been intended to look like something else but it looks like a cow, good for lots of laughs though.
In pvp it is apparently totally ok just to go into one of the two, (yeah just two) dedicated pvp zones and stand there, never actually go into battle, I have seen many toons never move an inch in PVP. For 4 weeks I watched the same toon enter warfronts and never move an inch. Reporting them does nothing. I do not care why they do it, and it may just be my pet peev, but I don't like it... so there
Really do not waste your time or money on this game, unless you are between the ages of 6 and 10 and have yet to progress beyond Dr. Seuse.
Oh please.
Perhaps I should just come out and say "adults should not be playing video games unless they are between the ages of 6 and 13 (at 14 you should be getting a job) and have yet to progress beyond Dr. Seuss."
Let's not be insulting to people who like this game when just playing video games can be attacked by a good many people who think that ALL games are for kids.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Low level mobs stopped knocking people off their high level horses a hotfix or two ago.
Right now warriors are the exact opposite of useless. A major balance patch is dedicated to fixing them and putting them on par with the other classes, since they are 20-30% ahead in dps.
If you want to see how simple or complex the class system is, a visit in the class forums will convince you that it's anything but simple.
You're confusing art, which you obviously dislike with graphics. Graphics are top notch. Art is subjective. Animations are decent for the most part. Personally I have no issues with them, but I can see how some people can nitpick.
The game has actually four warfronts and not two. Since you apparently haven't seen more it's clear indication that your character never made it past 30 (no problem with that really, just an observation). It also has contested zones if you are in a PvP server. The warfronts do get repetitive if you do them continiously. As for the afk issue, a vote system is implemented for the next major update. My guess the change will be incoming the next week or so along with the class balance changes.
You're missing two important bits of the story. Defiants rely on technology to fight Regulos. Guardians believe that that exact technology is the reason the rifts appeared and thus want to stop the Defiants from using them. Who in tern must fight to keep on using them. Guardians and their blind hate on technology was the ultimate reason for the destruction of defiant technology which destabilised Telara (defiant experiments were objectionable but not the direct cause of the rifts, the betrial of the Guardian nobility was).
Too much rage for somebody not properly informed about what was offered to him. By the way, it's unfortunate that you missed the major beta events, you'd have seen that the game was not for you and you wouldn't need to rage on the forums on your bad purchase decision.
I have played many MMORPGs and I must say that everything from user interface to class-based roles (healer, DPS, Tank) this game has, has been done by other MMORPGs so there is almost nothing new here.

Even the Rift system and the Souls aren't new. Rifts have been in Ultima Online, Darkfall, Asheron's Call, Warhammer, AND Tabula Rasa. The class system is like a dummied down version of old MMO class systems (which is still a step up over other MMOs)
Don't call this MMO generic, call it what it is... a WoW clone with no features to call its own.
Rift isn't a bad game to me. I like the mechanics (aside from 1111111111211111131111111, again, my opinion. I hate abilities that are there just for sake of having a button to smash every half second.). Some of the visuals needed some serious work in my opinion. But graphics do not make or break a game for me. In my opinion, far too much money is spent on graphics in modern games.
My main problem with the game is the RPG aspects. The story, setting, and other RPG aspects just clash horribly for me so I dropped the game.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
I bought the game because my gaming friends were playing it. I tried to like it, but it is just really boring. Maybe because my buds were already level 40 when I started, but the solo quest grind was really awful on the guardian side. The rifts were cool at first, but it's not like this is some new and exciting feature for MMOs. It is just like Warhammer except Warhammer actually had unique public quests that were different. Imagine the same public quest everywhere you go and you've got rifts.
The one warfront/battleground thing available for those under level 20 was terrible. Everyone jumps into a tiny room and just plays smeer the queer. Totally unoriginal and uninspired. Probably the worst battleground I have ever seen in any game. It was a total afterthought and it's like they felt they just had to do something so let's just make a room and put a ball in the middle.
I certainly didn't give the game a fair shot up to max level because I just can't bring myself to log in anymore. I suppose that is justification enough on why I don't like this game.
i think it should be a requirement that people "reviewing" the game should give their in -game character level. anyway, what you are saying is nothing new and exciting. its the same argument all the other anti-rift guys are repeating over and over.
There could be a reason for that...
Yeah there are alot of whiny bitches on the internet crying over games that they have not or will not play. The game is not for you? Than move on stop acting like every game should cater to your needs.
OR it's boring because it does nothing new? The same reason most MMO players found WoW boring when it came out, except its even more of a clone than WoW was.
I have played many MMORPGs and I must say that everything from user interface to class-based roles (healer, DPS, Tank) this game has, has been done by other MMORPGs so there is almost nothing new here.

if you're using that logic, then WoW is an EQ clone, and Rift is just another EQ clone.
Rift brings more "new" to the table over WoW than WoW did over EQ. Some people are burnt out on MMOs because of WoW and are blaming Rift for being too much of an MMO.
By lashing out at rift for doing something that people have been enjoying for years is down right stupid. Trion never said they were trying to make somthing revolutionary they wanted to make something good. And they did. Its lore is rich and intresting its world is large with many things to spend your off time doing such as artifacts and rifts and puzzles. Before saying rift is bad because it doesnt do anything new try playing the game. If a game was bad because it does nothing new then the Final fantasy series woulda died at number 8 if not earlier and CoD would no long be around eather. Just because something isnt new doesnt make it bad.

To add to your arguement. Actually the whole games industry would be dead becouse everything draws upon games that came before doesnt matter what genre it may be, oh and lets not forget INNOVATION DOES NOT SELL.

Aye, people posting their opinions on an open forum, who'd a thunk it eh...
Oh and not sure if your aiming your post at people in general, but I for one have not been 'crying about' Rift. I'm merely pointing out that if multiple people are saying the same things then there may be a reason for that.
Yes it was an in general sort of attack, in no means targeted at you. It was also a subtle way to point out that people on the internet will bitch about anything. You could have a game that has 100%, 5/5, 10/10 scores around the internet and there will still be people on forums that come and without too much effort start bashing the game. Im not saying you cant have an opinion, Im saying if you want to criticize a game and seems trustworthy you have to make an effort to make the post informative. Most topics in the vein of mmo X is bad are just short one paragraph vents by players who in my opinion have not played the game, or are trolling for fun while they enjoy a different mmo.
Fair enough I can agree with you on that point.
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."

Been playing Ultima Online since Pre-Tram. Please tell me, other than live events, where they do world invasions. Don't remeber seeing those and I've been to about every ince of Trammel, Felucca, Ilshenar, Malas, Tokuno, and Stygian Abyss/Ter Mur.
It's all opinion. I like Rift. It's very good to me. But why do people insist on pushing so many threads about I HATE THIS GAME, I LOVE THIS GAME type things. After the first 20 of them on each side it doesn't even matter anymore, it just makes the train longer.
I have played many MMORPGs and I must say that everything from user interface to class-based roles (healer, DPS, Tank) this game has, has been done by other MMORPGs so there is almost nothing new here.

Rift brings more "new" to the table over WoW than WoW did over EQ. Some people are burnt out on MMOs because of WoW and are blaming Rift for being too much of an MMO.
Er.. WoW was an EQ clone. The only difference is, WoW took what EQ had and made it simpler, smaller, and generally removed features. Rift, is a WoW clone, not an EQ clone, keeping with the same quest based leveling as WoW.
Rift brought NOTHING new to the table, I'm sorry. Neither did WoW. Rift does have mechanics that generally arent in EVERY MMO (Rifts) but they are by no means new or unique. Tabula Rasa, Warhammer, UO, AC, Darkfall, not new.
And no, people aren't burned out of MMOs and blaming Rift for being too much of an MMO. They're burned out of woW and blaming Rift for BEING A WOW CLONE. It's very simple. Rift could have tried to be unique, but it didn't.
To those saying innovation doesn't sell, then how did EQ become a success? DAoC? AC? SWG? UO? By innovating. How did LotRO, AoC, Aion, (list goes on) fail? By cloning WoW.
Rift is beautifully coded and has a very rich story-line, has very nice breadth and depth of character customization, and PvE game-play features that are very-well executed, but at its’ core, it is nothing but a grindy, pve-heavy, single-player-esque, non-organic, lobby-system style rpg with small wash, rinse, repeat battle-grounds that will give many the feel of overall game-play shallowness.
There is nothing very bad about it if you’re looking to transition into such a heavy theme-parkish game with friends or family, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Any comparison to WoW would be invalid comparisons since WoW is more of a social-network rather than a mmorpg any more, really.
And I’m certain that TERA, SWTOR and GW2 will leave many with the exact feeling of window-dressing and mundaneness after a while, if they are as non-player centric, non-organic, pve-heavy, redundant and grindy as most other mmo’s.
But isn’t that what’s to be expected of theme-park mmo’s if one isn’t really into the nature of the product-type?

I do not care why they do it, and it may just be my pet peev, but I don't like it... so there

OR it's boring because it does nothing new? The same reason most MMO players found WoW boring when it came out, except its even more of a clone than WoW was.
Sorry but...
if you're using that logic, then WoW is an EQ clone, and Rift is just another EQ clone.
