You just have to look at most current singleplayer games, from FPS to RPG to action/adventure games: the vast majority of them has VO and cinematics, in preference above games with pure text or text balloons or such.

Which debunks your statement that VO and cutscenes/cinematics don't add to immersion and enjoyment in a game, because nobody is complaining about those games that VO and cinematics are present.

Sure, then you'll probably say that MMORPG's are different from singleplayer games; which only holds true up to a point: you're still doing quests, you're still progressing via levels and stat improvements with gear that becomes better and better. So, if MMORPG's uses so many similar features and mechanics as seen in singleplayer games, then an improvement upon questing in singleplayer games, namely VO and cinematics, is bound to have a same beneficial effect in MMORPG's.

    As for the OP:

so far it looks like a yes, reasons are

    - Bioware quality and Star Wars IP

    - huge, open-world planets that in total are easily several times the size of a WoW vanilla

    - huge amount of content, plus an altoholics' dream of leveling different characters with totally different progression

    - interesting crafting and as the reports so far go engaging, fun gameplay

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

I think it is common knowledge that when a poster is posting an opinion he/she is only speaking for themselves. There is no need to correct them on that unless they are specifically speaking for a group of people.

So far out of 91 people 64.8% say that they will buy this game.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

Ever played assassins creed 2?   Cutscenes in that game were obnoxious to say the least.

yes even just because it's Star Wars, not to mention there is absolutely nothing worth playing these days. i dont think it will hold my attention for long thoug, but i will definately try it. A LOT of people will try this game, so the player base it's basically theirs to lose. all they have to do is not scew it up and it will be a success.

If you roll Empire, there's a very likely chance you'll have the option to kill ANYTHING that might sound like Jar Jar fucking Binks. That's a much better solution, no?

Well if this was SWG you could kill it no matter what side you're on.

From everything we've seen, we have stories that change your character, massive open worlds that are notches above the best I've seen in an MMO, combat that adds a medium between full action and strategy, housing, hybridization of classes,  alignments, and so much packed into a single characters progression that it would be a rarity to have two of the same characters go through their story and come out exactly the same.

Then you have a crafting system that I feel is a major step in the right direction.  You have real, open world PvP,  (or should I say open worlds PvP, as you'll likely be fighting on quite a few of them)  enough PvE and Group content to last months.

From what they've said this will be the largest MMO to ever exist on launch.

People focus too much on the voiceovers and story, thinking they'll be sitting there watching movies all day,  but they fail to realize that these aren't just movies,  these are progression tools that effect your character in both objectives and skills.

Anyone saying they won't be playing this game will definitely be missing out.

I don't have time to go through what you said step by step( I might late but im just putting off work atm and have to get back to that), but as someone who has been following and reading up on this game often, I really think your overhyping what the game will actually be. "combat that adds a medium between full action and strategy" for example, stands out to me  as bologna to say the least.

Are you sure? Isn't it just a message saying "Dodge" and your character jumping out of the way without you being responsible for that?

Because this video shows something "dodgy", but not something the way you meant it?

You know, Dark, everytime a massive amount of negativity invades my brain about this game from so many posts, you save me from the raging storm and put me back on the mountain top of excitement about SWTOR.  +1 for being awesome.

Hehe, thanks mate. I know the feeling. It's unneeded though :)

Every game gets a lot of flak over here and 90% of the flak SWTOR is getting can be described as: "Storylines + voice overs = single player rpg! IT IS NOT POSSIBLE for a true mmorpg to have these!"

Some people don't seem to understand the meaning of the word "addition" and fail to realize how storylines could be a rich and awesome replacement for the boring leveling proces in most other mmorpgs. I'd rather play through an epic storyline and chase objectives with a lot of meaning and story than doing countless of repetitive kill and collect quests or grinding xp.

For me, the storylines aren't even the main reasons why I am interested in this game. Vast, open and immersive worlds, interesting crafting/companions, the fresh setting and world pvp are much higher on my list.

Yeah I have to admit, the dissapointment plagueing me about GW2 is the lack of open world PVP, it just doesn't make sense not to have it in such a racially charged freaking game.  I mean the story behind the Asura alone show them to be so egotistical there's no way they wouldn't be slapping some hurt on the other races.  Don't even get me started on the Charr and Norn.  It's like Vikings without teeth.

I'm really hoping that they change the no open world pvp policy.  It almost seems like I'll be playing GW2 and SWTOR to fulfill my gaming desires LOL.

I think the issue is that in GW2 all of their open world content and game mechanics just don't support it. You would have to stick to playing in the "Mists" for unbalanced PvP in GW2.

depends on what their crafting is like (want something like EVE, FE, early SWG)

depends on what the actual goal of the game is once lvl'g (grinding for gear=Fail)

Guild Wars will never have an open pvp policy, only in dedicated zones. Arenanets way of thinking is the game is primarily a PvE game, and pvp is seperate. By putting PvP in its own seperate area, they make it 10000000x easier to balance without any risk of touching the PvE side of the game, unlike other mmo's.

Bounty hunters don't have much of a dodge, I was speaking more along the lines of the smuggler and IA.  The video you showed is something I haven't seen much of,  but the game does depend on LOS. Hopefully they tighten up the range on the melee combos there.

    Yes.

I am not a Star Wars fan - i wont play it bcs its Star Wars - but i like Science Fiction in general and i like that Bioware will probably offer a high quality polished SF-MMORPG i can play with friends, bringing the until now underdeveloped parts like storytelling in MMORPGs to a new level of entertainment.

I will make me a fun out of it to hunt all this wannabe Jedis bcs i never understood why this force freaks be that popular.

I am pretty sure i will have my fun for quite a time with the game ;)

And i totally do not care if some overconfident wannabe "I tell You what is fun" guy tries to convince me he does know better than me what i do like in games - i am such an ignorant man :P

Traditional gameplay and Electronic Arts interesting payment methods make me a bit undecided. One could make a poll, how many DLC quest packs will be buyable at release? Like in Dragon Age 2: "preorder now and get DLC1 for free at release".
What about the item shop? Didn´t some dev say, that they don´t need 1 million subs because there are other methods of making money?

On the other hand as an MMO-player it sure would be uncommon to skip one of the biggest MMO releases in history.

The fact that it's the next KOTOR (spiritually) is already enough to justify $60.

I think it'll be an average MMO, but that doesn't stop it from being an awesome single-player game.  So definitely buying it, definitley enjoying it.  Probably dumping it after the main story's done.  But hey, if it turns out to be better than that, I won't complain!

    Yep I will be playing.

At the very least it will have enough content to fill my craving for a good Star Wars game, something I have not played in quite some time now. That alone is enough to warrent me purchasing it as I would get it anyways even if it was just KOTOR 3 and did not have the online element.

That being said, the level of online content offered will be the deciding factor on how long I remain playing it, and I do hope it keeps me entertained for quite some time.

  • VercinVercin Member UncommonPosts: 372

I want it to be good , but I have my doubts, especially with as much as they are putting into story , I don't want to play a linear game that I'm done with in 80 hours. Thats not an mmo by my standards.

I'll keep following it and hopefully there is an open beta or friend invite program ,

    So, I put undecided.
