Does Trion patch Rift too often?

KyleranKyleran Member LegendaryPosts: 44,088

In a crabby mood, logged into Rift only to find that yes, I have to download and install a patch before I can play.

True, most of these patches are small, only a few minutes to download, but it just seems that they should be past near daily patching of the client code by now.

And weekends, nothing more annoying than to settle down at 8:00 am on a Saturday to play some Rift only to get "sorry, we're bringing down the servers for 30 minutes to patch the game"

I'm glad they are so responsive and dedicated to making a smooth running product, but enough with the patching, confine it to once or twice a week already.

The way i see it is Trion cares and likes to tweak things and ry new things out. its a good thing

    Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
    Playing Rift

Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(

Yes, they patch what seems like at least once a day. I don't have an issue with it during the week, but when they do it during a) primetime, or b) on weekends when it's non-critical, it's mega-lame. Go home Trion...your family misses you.

I have played many games where I wished they would patch things and they never do, so seeing someone complaining about TOO MUCH patching is strange to me.

To be honest i would rather see them actively going after problems and fixing them, than sitting back like many of the others do and posting a stupid XXGB patch without warning. I do kinda like Rift's style atm tho letting people know every so often what they are fixing and their views.

Its only a few mins let it and patch and grab a cup of tea image

Sheesh, some pretty harsh reactions. I think the OP does understand there is a good side to all the patching and knows he's being a bit of a grump. I'll put my hand up and say I similarly get annoyed that every time I log on I have to patch, knowing full well I shouldn't be annoyed. :)

Amount of patching should slow down eventually.

    Harsh reactions? I think not.

Up until now the entire MMO community have been complaining about bugs, unfinished games, lack of content, lack of fixes etc. It's really tiresome to read the endless stream of complaints. When a game actually do adress the things that so many have been complaining about that is suddenly a complaint in itself.

The annoying thing about the OPs post might not be his own feelings or his own annoyance, but rather how obviously he show how insanely spoiled the MMO community is.

Well this is a classic case of Chronic Complainers

One of the problems I see with Trion is the fact that they give in to player's demand.....a lot, its nice to devs listens to the playerbase, but giving them what they want ALL the time is actually bad for the game, gamers are not professional gam designers, Developers are. Games made by gamers will mostly don't function as a whole. =

I guess the only redeemable fact for OP is if this patch actually breaks the game instead of fixing it, but knowing Trion right now, I doubt that is the case.

That's not entirely an accurate, as most of their patches are small and could wait until they are more substantial.

I play Rift with a friend from the US, and we are getting pretty tired of so many server shutdowns during our play window.  Its good they are fixing issues (well kind of give they seem to be breaking more than fixing of late), but the frequency is unacceptable.  It would be fine if the patches were to address game breaking issues, but they simply aren't.

Other developers have made the exact same mistake, and have ended up batching fixes following admitting the approach was't best.  Mostly down to them not understanding no matter where the servers are located, they are going to have people from all over the globe playing on them.

Damn, do people just *need* to find something to complain about around here? If they cannot think of something legit, its patching too much?

The game is hardly ever down long, even when they do slip a patch in during prime time. Even during major patches, its not down that long.

Agreed. I think it's a good sign. They work as fast on issues as they can. Besides, it never takes long.

Becouse the most difficult thing i could imagine to do would be to please the mmorpg gamers community.

daily patches? we say we dun like it

weekly patches? we say that should had been fixed/changed days ago

monthly patches? we asks ourselves what  they are doing.

id vote for daily patches everyday there will be something refreshing / changed in our big world of mmos

I dunno... seems some of the responses are far more over-the-top than they make the OP's post out to be.

The OP was simply venting about the frequency of wanting to log into the game and seeing it either requires a patch, or logging in to find there's going to be down-time for a patch soon. He wasn't complaining that they're patching the game, he's griping about how often they're patching the game.

When you only have a certain amount of time, and just want to log in and play, it can become annoying after a while. I know exactly what they're talking about, and I'm sure every single person responding to the OP has felt annoyed at it as well at some point. The difference is the OP decided to post and vent about it... others haven't.

That said, as to the frequency of patches, if they're doing it every day... or, moreso, multiple times every day... that is a bit overboard. There's a reason why developers typically have scheduled patches. Unless the patches are emergency ones to fix something game breaking, even if they did it twice a week, it would be perfectly fine. This way they get a bunch of fixes in at one time, and the players know when to expect them so they can plan accordingly.

If you know the game patches every Monday at 7AM EST, and usually lasts an hour... then you know not to expect to be playing at that time for ~ 1 hour. Nothing wrong with that.

Like I said, some people in this thread are making a bigger deal about the OP's post than the OP was about the patching.

Well we are talking about a few patches a day sometimes. My worry is that they may be in such a hurry to plug one leak that they roll out a patch that causes far more havok than the problem they originally tried to repair.

Ha ha ha! Good that you started telling you're in a crabby mood :P

I don't agree with you that TRIOn patches too often. I think there's nothing wrong with continues maintenance of the game (client side) and that each time you logon, the game checks for a minute or 2 to see if you have the latest updates available. Okay, they could just wait and drop all those micro-patches to the weekly maintenance, but IMO, as long as the server doesn't have to be brought down to make the patch, why not implement it at the spot? Black Prophecy is having patched on a nearly daily basis as well and I see no harm in that. It only shows how dedicated a developer is to give us a good product.

  • SanguinelustSanguinelust Member UncommonPosts: 812

Well, it's a good thing I didn't wake up crabby this morning to reply to this post.

I don't care how often Trion patches their game as long as they keep up the good work I'm happy.

I hope they keep up the frequency of patching RIFT. Been a long time since a company has been this dedicated and serious about their product. And i don't want the quality and stability to go down.

  • grapevinegrapevine Member UncommonPosts: 1,927

I can't believe how selfish some people are being.  Patching to often means they are preventing some people from playing during the times they can.   Just like any other "professionally" ran service, patches need to be scheduled unless there's an emergency reason.
