I wonder how the world's layout will be in regard to this: maybe its so packed ful of content and mobs that traveling long stretches with a mount wouldn't even be a desirable option. That would be a GW1 aspect too: having to fight your way towards new locations, so maybe not so far fetched. A world like that would explain having no mounts and the teleporting gallore.

Well for someone who is concerned with the story being seen in the game....it would be a step backwards to have mounts in Guild Wars.  You'd literally have to have one every where you portalled to.  More importantly, why would races waste time breaking in PONIES ( ;D ) when they could just teleport anywhere instantly?  It may be an over simplification but these two concepts together would show that having mounts would be illogical in the guild wars world.

Given the differences between GW1 and GW2, will teleporting really be as prevalent in the new game?  I haven't really heard that it would, but I've haven't been following it too closely of late.

I was thinking that the amount of teleporting would be different in GW2.

As far as we know, they may have increased the amount of waypoints in the demo so that everyone could easily go where he wanted to go.

I don't care so much about the mounts themselves, but I have to admit I am concerned about the lack of need for mounts. That means a butt ton of instant teleporting travel and/or monorail type travel...which makes even a massive world seem much smaller, and makes smaller worlds seem tiny.

It is a step, imo, towards taking the "massive" out of MMORPG.

    Whaatt ?

GW2 is mainly a pvp game ?  disregard the fact that GW2 does not have owpvp ?

that's because it's focus is guild to guild PVP. Not all PVP is centered around ganking noobs

No, the alternative would have been mounts + getting rid of most of the teleporting.

More importantly, why would races waste time breaking in PONIES ( ;D ) when they could just teleport anywhere instantly?

That's the problem. You can portal anywhere. It's either that or a realistic, interactive and immersive means of transport, aka 'mounts'.

It may be an over simplification but these two concepts together would show that having mounts would be illogical in the guild wars world

... because there will be teleporting anyway.

I'm VERY excited about many aspects of this game, and have been looking forward to playing it for quite a while now... But this really does concern me.  I'm ok with a load screen every now and then, but I still want the feel of an open world, to occasionally experience the wonder of exploration...

    Still on your crusade?

GW was mainly a pvp game and it didn't have open world pvp either.

There's already been a huge topic a while back on mounts. Why this is getting addressed again I have no idea. There is no need for mounts, thus (at this point in time) there will be no mounts. So being unhappy about it and telling everyone isn't going to help anything.

What's stopping you from that? You have to discover the waypoints first of all. That in itself will promote exploration.

Here's another good reason to not have mounts: It would lessen the impact of actually using mounts/vehicles in dynamic events, when that happens. Being able to hop into a tank and having a Charr drive you around whilst you shoot at stuff would be amazing. But if everyone had Charr cars/bikes, then the impact of that would be far less memorable.

    This is not a game.

Ah all good thought the OP was announcing something bad about mounts being in. They still are not, they are not needed and if there is not a good system for them then don't include them, still stands. All good imo.

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

The one thing about mounts that I will say, it rarely has been incorporated into mmos properly. All they are are speed boosts for the most part.

In history horses and other mounts, such as camels and elephants, were used in combat and for major advantage. Cavalry was huge in military history. If they did put in mounts then hopefully they put in more features than just a speed boost.

If it's just for faster travel then no thanks.

It seems to me that mounts (or some type of speed enhancement)  are a basic feature that all MMO's should have. Its not a game killer but I think people do have the right to be upset that this feature is not included.

Actually it's "Massively Multiplayer", it doesn't really have anything to do with the size of a game. Don't forget that you have to pay a fee to teleport to a waypoint, and that every waypoint needs to be discovered before you can teleport to it.

There are enough elements to make the game feel massive, and make it attractive for explorers, but there are some people who don't enjoy having to constantly travel through areas which they are already familiar with. One thind that may reduce the enjoyment one can get out of travelling on foot/mount is the mob density which is far higher in MMORPGs than in singleplayer RPGs such as Oblivion.

You aren't forced to use teleporting as it doesn't hamper your effectiveness really, but if the latter is in fact the case, then I wonder wether you are playing for fun or outdoing other players.

Well I know that the humans have lost a lot of ground, but from my understanding they're going toward more of an advancement in technology, which would mean teleportation would still be the normal means of transportation.  Although I could see them doing something along the lines of "stables" outside cities, like on Assassin's Creed, and elder scrolls.

I would like to add that MMO's don't use weapons properly also. I mean really it wouldn't take 15 whacks of a sword to kill a rat so if they arn't going to do that properly then no thanks!

I think Dark Pony hit the nail on the head when he mentioned world layout. Mounts for the most part are a way to get from 1 quest hub to the next quickly, get to dungeons, and for status IMO. The reason for getting to one area to the next quickly is in my opinion because there isn't anything in between to do. All most all content is run through hubs with dungeons close by. If you take out the quests and hubs along with them and have things(DEs) to do spread out all over then that's one reason you no longer need them.

DEs are going to be ongoing and sometimes popping up based on player actoins. So if my friend or guildmate says get over here quick shatterer is about to land, I will pick teleporting close and running the rest of the way over mounts any day. Also I think they want you to be out exploring and finding those DEs they hid in out of the way places. Mounts are not very good when your exploring because you tend to run past stuff you wouldn't have missed on foot.

That's just some of my thoughts we will see if not having mounts is a bad thing or not when the game comes out.

  • drumchannelldrumchannell Member UncommonPosts: 187

The problem with mounts is that the speed boost breaks immersion by allowing characters to skip content, miss scenery/events, escape mobs etc and thus making the world feel small and meaningless.

As devs said, they want you to explore the world. If you just ride past the most of areas, that would kill the point of exploring. Giving the fact that there are no more quests or hubs, you need to search for every corner of map in search of some hidden/secret events, that you would just pass over otherwise.

I will judge the traveling system once the game come out, but hell, i preffer to play RPGs like adventurer that wander over the lands, all by him alone.

Main MMO at the moment: Guild Wars 2
    Waiting for: Pathfinder Online
