Based on the press release it seems EU players got hacked harder than US.

This event is just more proof that SOE is cutting corners everywhere possible and they got caught.

Very stupid of them to not have a security mitigation plan in place when pink slipping techies.

    Payback can hurt.

    Blizzard are worse than SOE

My WOW account got hacked twice this year, and don't even play it. They use your email address as username, so whenever you email people, or may have your email address in public view like on a CV for employers, then that is halfway to getting account hacked.

All Blizzard said was that I must have had a key logging program virus on my PC  - yeah right! Even if that was the case, they would not be able to get the info as not inputting it for the hackers to capture.

When I first signed up for WOW, was able to use a unique username, then they migrated to the battle.net thing, as made your email address the username.

If it is just hackers anonymous that caused this with Sony  then chances are that they just hacked into the systems to show SOE they could do it, and didn't even bother stealing info. SOE are just saying this in case they did do.

If it was terrorists that hacked into the systems then they probably did steal the info.

the difference with WoW is that it was you that got hacked not the company.. chances are your password was the same one used for other things.. which is how most hacks are accomplished in WoW.. not to mention the phishing emails...Sony got hacked.. their entire database was stolen.. over a period of several days.. .. saying that Blizzard is worse than SOE.. just displays a total ignorance of the situation. image

I have not seen many people saying they have their SOE accounts hacked. It is common place with WOW. Plus anyone determined enough will be able to hack Blizzard no problem - no security measures are strong enough.

Blizzard is worse than WOW because they use your email address. No one knows my SOE account detaills except for myself, in my head. People had my WOW username when I emailed people.

Also password was not the same in WOW and completely different,. First of all I had an email saying account was suspended due to suspicious activity, and it was not a phishing email. I did not use the links in the email in case it was, and went to Official Blizzard website direct, and before doing so scanned PC for any viruses, and nothing - no viruess, so proceeded changing details and according to the account it was indeed suspended and changed email address on everything too. Then changed password to something totally not easy, and unrelated to anything else, but then it got hacked properly afterwards

I changed email address on CV to something brand new, and WOW email address is brand new, and have not had a problem since.

It seems they got my email address / account name from my CV, and then  used a program to trial and error the password

Dude, 24 MILLION people had their PERSONAL INFO STOLEN.  The reason we don't see a bunch of SOE gamers complaining about losing their accounts is because SOE shut down their login servers and nobody can even see what has happened to their accounts (if anything).

That's a hell of a lot worse than people getting their individual WoW account hacked.

I have to agree with Metalazo for the most part. Account hacks are a different thing than a whole database stolen. I hear a lot of WoW accounts being comprimised (hacked if you like), while I hardly hear of SOE acounts being comprimised.

On the other hand, a complete database downoad is quite bad as well. Good thing this is just a one time thing and SONY wll most likely make it unable for this to happen in the future. And if hackers were determined to get the whole Blizzard database, they'd get it as well. Only difference is that SONY is no a target of mad hackers because of the whole PS3 thing, while Blizzard doesn't make enemies amongst hackers.

The one thing where I do blame SONY is that there was no encryption on the 'general data'. I bet SONY didn't think it'd be possible to loose their database, but still... If you have the data of over 100 million people world wide, you have to make sure that in the case you do get hacked, all data of your customers are quite save. I know that even encrypted data can be de-crypted, but it'll take a hell of a time for 100 million users to de-crypt all data.

And I'm sure in general something good will come from this hack. I dare say that all other (subscription) MMO publishers are now taking a very close look at their security and database encryption. If not, and they get hacked, we can surely say that publisher XXX is bad...

So? What about before all this? I am one of them, and probbaly more affected than anyone else, as have loads of SOE accounts, and not one has been compromised

If people get hacked now in SOE then fair enough, but if I got my WOW account hacked, then Blizxzards system has to be extremely weak

There is no evidence that info got stolen, and even if it did they had about a week to use it all. It is just SOE playing safe

After this SOE is going to be well strong.

I am not subbing to WOW, until they change their systems to allow usernames to be unique like SOE

...makes me wonder... I did get an eMail about the PSN hack and I couldn't care less either: old data, previous address and most certainly no financial data there - not to mention a very old PS2 and 2 PSP serialnumbers are all stored there.

Now with the SOE I was expecting an eMail as well as Eu resident, but I didn't get one, nor did my son. Does that mean no financial data is taken, only our personal identity data..?

Not suyre that it does affect both, as boith emails seem similar. I think people must have mulled over this for a week (SOE was affected last week too), then thought it best do the same for SOE account. WHy didn't they do all this last week?

    Better safe than sorry.

SOE's database was hacked.. which means, they got access to credit cards (Because apparently they dont encrypt those :s) - they got account names, they got your full name, they got your personal address, birth date etc.

They don't care about your account, what they want is personal information for identity fraud, or to steal your credit card.

They might even be able to sell these information elsewhere and make a fortune of it even.

Wait...no evidence the info was stolen? Dude, it WAS! It's GONE!

    Here's what was stolen:

"The personal information of the approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts that was illegally obtained, to the extent it had been provided to SOE, is as follows:

    • name

    • address

    • e-mail address

    • birthdate

    • gender

    • phone number

    • login name

    • hashed password

"In addition to the information above, the 10,700 direct debit records from accounts in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain, include:

    • bank account number

    • customer name

    • account name

    • customer address

Just because you haven't had one compromised YET, doesn't mean squat. All of your data is now in the hands of people who are already proven thieves.

This isn't about hacking your worthless pixels - nobody but you gives a crap about your lewts or your mando suit. This is about your IDENTITY!!! Not toons. Credit ratings, credit cards, bank accounts, passwords, emails, loans. In our online world, that information is of TREMENDOUS value.

Whats done is done, and the future of SOE will be stronger, but Blizzards won't be, they will still be as weak as always. Those who hacked into my WOW account got all personal info too, without them hacking their database or maybe they did and Blizzard are clueless?

I have always felt safer with my details in SOEs hands, than Blizzards, and will do so even more now

Perosnally I think it is Blizzard being the ones behind the account getting hacked.  I go ask them questions on what may have caused it, and they just say the usual crap, and then when I bring up my theory of the CV they stay silent and don't want to get the bottom of the matter. Even I was tempted to buy the Battl.net authenticator just so no one else would be able to access my account and get my details even with the intention of not playing Blizzard games any more. I would have done, if I did not have to give them my card details to do so - I just don't trust Blizzard.

They could want the account info for information, but if it is down to the hacking group anonymous, then they would not be interested in doing that, all they care about is hurting SOE and not the customers. SOE are saying that people have stolen the info as they can not tell that people have done so or not, and it also makes the hackers look bad.

SOE sites were all down from about Thu to Mon the previous weekend because of this, and if people stole the info, then that week since Thu (or before when they grabbed the info) would have been the best time to use it. Now all peoples details are flagged and if anyone other than user uses it, it will ring bells, and they will get into trouble.

Why on earth would Blizzard hack the SOE servers?  SOE isn't a threat to Blizzard.  Everything soe releases is either a failure or they fuck it up in the first year.

SOE just got hacked AFTER they took the servers down two weeks ago when the PSN network was hacked.  They knew there was a problem, but concluded they were fine.  That is how safe your information is with SOE.

Not to mention SOE willing GAVE your information away a few years ago to third parties.  Without your concent.

Keep dreaming friend, but at least lay some blame where it deserves to be.

I think it's Draakull from SWG getting his own back on the community tbh.

I have always fely safer with my details in SOEs hands, than Blizzards, and will do so even more now

I didn't say Blizzard hacked the SOE servers. I said I think Blizzard are behind peoples battle.net accounts getting hacked, to try and sell more authenticators. Probably not, but seems that way, as when trying to investigate further other than what they say may be the problem, they do not respond. Blizzard accounts gets hacked more than anything else, and they have detailed procedures on these things because it is so common. Something is not right somewhere

I am no Blizzard fan but I just have to argue this point. Last time I checked the scoreboard - Blizzard's services have been running the last two weeks.

    • There have been no calls from members of Congress to explain their security or decisions pertaining to.

    • Blizzard did not go down for 9 days and then tell its sub base that their personal data had been hacked.

    • Blizzard did not store subscriber passwords in a nonencrypted way. Even the simplest of forum software allows you to do this now.

    • Blizzard did not keep an old accounts db on a remote server. Arguably in the open.

    • Blizzard did not send out an email saying one branch of the company's data was safe only to have to send out another email saying 24 million accounts had their data stolen. 12,000 credit card numbers taken and 10k in debit transactions containing bank #s (which don't expire) are now in the open.

Your belief that the perps would use the data immediately is also errant. The people behind these breaches are quite skilled. Risking going to jail on a single transaction is the sign of a novice. The data is worth more when sold to another entity and then it is pilfered for its uses. Far removed from the hacker. We won't see the ramifications from this for months.

Nah, if I were a betting man, my money would be on the company that has the highest number of accounts and posses as the greatest target in recent history but yet hasn't had their data stolen not just once but twice. Again, I am no Blizzard fan but when compared to Sony at this moment in time - they are the lesser of the two evils in terms of data breaches.

Blizzard has not done any of that, as it has not been made public, and Blizzard could be clueless to being hacked, or Blizzard are the ones behind their own customers accounts getting hacked to try and sell authenticators.

This has only come to light because SOE has spotted the intusion. If they did not, then we'dd all still be thinking  they are as safe and secure as Blizzard

After tgis fiasco SOE will end up being stonger than Fort Knox, and probably more annoying too, with a tonne of hoops to go though just to activate account.

    YEARS!

These people aren't stupid and they are extremely patient. This isn't about one time charges to Walmart.com, this is about establishing credit in your name, not today, not tomorrow, YEARS from now. And credit in the form of thousands of dollars, not $15 charges.

There's no expiration date on your birthday, gender (in most cases) or name. Identity theives wait until you WON'T be checking and with a database of 100million people, they can split this up for the next few decades.

I always keep checking. Nothing is 100% secure, where the internet is concerned
