The title says it all. How important are graphics to you? If there was a 2d mmo to come out, even an eclipse game, that has all the features everyone is looking for. Such as, in depth crafting, player made factions, immersive world, ect. Would you play it?
As a game developer I am curious what people think.
Not now, Not later, Not ever.
I'm sure it will get a small fanase but I don't think it will be big. Ultima Online is still in the market and it has a small fanbase already. Being it a new game it will probably get some curious people but in my understanding, MMO's must be 3D on our days.
I'm still unsure of how 2d can ve open world......must require immense amount of imagination.....
Isometric perspective
... or really big side scrollers with lots of levels.
Or top down.
Really, there's a variety of ways? I mean, thanks for saying I have an immense amount of imagination though.
Well my view is that isometric perspective is really really borderline 2D, unless you mean using 3d modelled character on a 2D plane distorted at 60 degrees, and call that isometric (cheating :P)
As for side scrollers or top down angle, I just cant consider that an 'open' world
because at it very definition, a environment/world is a three dimensional inhabitable space meaning xyZ plane, you need a depth in order to have an open world, whereas 2d seems to contradict the idea =, I don't mean any offence to any 2D lovers, its just a big dynamic world is an almost must have feature for me
2D for me is a very indie feature/idea now, not saying indie games are bad, but indie are usually inspirational ideas condensed and form into a one very delicate product, oppose to bigger budget titles where more features can be ultised and polished into a broad open product.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Well, to be fair, him too! He doesn't come from a country like America where English is the native language and where people are the best at it.
I think he comes from the UK or something. Just goes to show you that anybody can learn English if they practice enough.
Err, is this supposed to be funny ? You are using a smiley as if its supposed to be funny. But the joke is totally lost on me, for American English is definitely NOT the better English than Britain English.
Yes, I hate people that just plays games for the graphics (like 99%) out there. We are a small bunch that finds 2D charming and awesome.
Again: 2D does NOT have bad graphics.
The graphics of 2D are OK. Whats bad is the controls. Especially in a MMO.
A 2D game is like Diablo or Baldurs Gate where you look from above on your character. Yes, it can look good. In fact, the looks themselves are pretty much perfect. After all, the background is handcrafted and beautifully painted.
But in a 3D game, you have a much more natural interface. You can look into the distance, and at the sky. You can look behind every obstacle, which you cant in a 2D environment. You can manage multiple layers, which is hard to impossible in a 2D environment - everywhere you click has to be one specific place to move to.
This is important for seamless worlds typical for MMOs. I especially loved the realistic viewing distances Vanguard managed to have. Really made you feel you are actually inside a "real" world.
Err, is this supposed to be funny ? You are using a smiley as if its supposed to be funny. But the joke is totally lost on me, for American English is definitely NOT the better English than Britain English.
I checked your profile. It's a shame you're not from the UK too, because then I could make a comment about how in addition to having English as a second language, dry humor isn't really the strong point of people from Britian either.
To be honest, I used the smiley face SO people could tell I was telling a joke, though I frankly think it's more amusing without the smiley face.
I'm a big fan of straight faced absurdities. If you can say something absolutely ludicrous with a completely solemn expression, you win! It doesn't count if the person saying it actually believe the absurdity, but I would think that anybody with a little bit of deductive power could quickly reason out that I'm unlikely to seriously believe that Britian learns English as a second language.
... and the idea of Americans lecturing people from England on 'proper use of English' is amusing, no?
... maybe not to you, never mind. My sense of humor is a bit off.

Nah, isometric perspective 2D is still 2D. Look at something like Final Fantasy Tactics. That's still 2D graphics, it's just using perspective to trick you. The computer thinks of it as 2D. There is no '3D' to it, unlike a polygon image, which does actually take up an imaginary 3D set of coordinates. If you want an MMO that's a little more modern, look at Wakfu. I'm under the impression it's 2D art (It might be 3D art rendered to look like 2D, but I measured the floor tiles a bit and they don't actually recede into the background, so I'm guessing it's all perspective trickery, not actual 3D)
Also, while your personal definition of world/environment may require 3D, that's not actually a requirement in the real definitions. Also, look at it this way. Let's take... WoW (Just because it's common enough I would think you know what I'm talking about, not because I think it's the best game ever), before flying mounts, okay? Now, while there's THEORETICALLY 3 dimensions, and the jump lets you move in the Z direction, there's almost no practical difference between 95% of the WoW world and the same world mapped completely flat, with you flat on top. Jumping doesn't really change much in the way of gameplay, and there's not really much in the way of Z axis puzzles or maneuvering going around. Only going underwater added any significant Z component, and let's face it... underwater combat sucked.
A sufficiently large overhead view world could have just as much space and content as any of the standard 3D MMOs. Only EVE would be hard to compete with (In terms of space, not content), just because it really DOES use the Z axis just as much as X and Y, instead of it being a comparatively miniscule component of world design.
Why do some people hate 2D graphics so much? 2D graphics can be pretty amazing.
2D games can look absolutely gorgeous. Just because we've switched to mostly 3D graphics doesn't mean 2D graphics are automatically inferior in all ways.
yep yep, 2d is awesome when done right. not taht it matters, I'll play anything as long as its fun. well, almost. I won't be going back to plan ANSI games anytime soon, but to me the gameplay comes first, if it happens to be pretty as well...bonus! How many games killed themselves trying to make the transition from 2d to 3d? Meow, which games are those? bottom one is a Blazblue I think but don't know the top 2
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
Depends on how good this 2D is. I played Ragnarok Online (it's 3d enviroment with 2d characters), Heaven & Hearth, Metal Assault and etc and totally ok with that 2D. But when i see, for example, Dwarf Fortress (even with graphic pack) I want to scream "My eyes! My eyes!" and run away.
So now that we're in the 2000s, I assume you don't walk (Car), read (TV) or think there's a point to people playing real instruments (Guitar Hero)?
2D isn't outdated, it's out of fashion, there's a difference. There's ways to do do it that are more graphics intensive and imprsesive than the majority of 3D titles you'll see out there. People decided to go with 3D because in general it's easier for development and certain types of games, but there's plenty of beautiful 2D games out there, and there's plenty that can still be done with them.

The top two games are by VanillaWare, the company that GTWander mentioned in his post.
Odin Sphere and Muramasa, respectively. Two of the most gorgeous 2D games out there, far surpassing the artistic value of almost all 3D games. Some of the scenery in there is... wow. ... and the way the models move and breathe is a joy to watch.
The third one was a random screenshot from Ragnarok Battle Offline... an offline sidescrolling combat version of Ragnarok Online, the MMO. (Which had 2D character sprites).
Style and speed of creation become the 2 biggest issues with 2D, even considering the three games used as examples.
Odin Sphere/Murumasa both do look good, but sometimes can feel like that came at expense of gameplay polish. Neither game is broken by any means, but have their flaws.
The Ragnarok I never played, though I'll use it to point out an issue with all three games: Not everyone wants a asian-cartoon influence to the art, and thats the style that had the most breakthroughs in speed/efficency of production.
Blazblue took a while to even come out from the announcement, namely due to the handdrawn sprites. And while I always love Arc System Works, they're not using just 2D anymore.
The production videos for BB and BB:CS show how they made textureless forms of each character and then animated all the moves there. From those form outlines, they repainted in the textures/animations of the actual characters frame by frame.
Yes, advances have been made in 2D production.
Yes, 2D can still look fantastic all on its own.
Yes, 3D extrapolation of models/animations/etc have made things a lot faster.
BUT
It still solely depends on the effort willing to be invested by the developer. Just because a game is made, doesn't mean it deserves greatness or attention.
Those both need to be earned constantly by the developers working their ass off at something they love.
Lets Push Things Forward
I knew I would live to design games at age 7, issue 5 of Nintendo Power.
Support games with subs when you believe in their potential, even in spite of their flaws.
Odin Sphere/Murumasa both do look good, but sometimes can feel like that came at expense of gameplay polish. Neither game is broken by any means, but have their flaws.
Yeah, Odin Sphere and Muramasa both have so-so gameplay. Muramasa even worse, actually...
... but considering the quality of the graphics, the size of the company, and the fact that the gameplay isn't really worse than a lot of 3D games made by bigger companies...
... it's easy to realize that with a bigger budget, and a company better at designing gameplay, you could make a much better experience.
Oh, a problem Odin Sphere suffered from was graphical slowdown. The PS2 just was NOT designed to handle sprites like that. It taxed the system. :< 2D isn't 'inferior' tech, it's just... not very well used.
Also, I don't think being in 2D inherently makes a game better, but it certainly doesn't inherently make it WORSE.
Yes, it has its problems with development and creating art assets, but at least part of that is also because the game industry simply didn't develop in that direction as much as they've focused on 3D.

of course, the same can be said of 3d games too tho. it all depends on how much love the devs are willing to put into it.
as for the Japan-centric styles, I likes 'em. but thats jus me, I can see where someone wo didn't would have problems w/ many 2d gamse because the majority are like that.
the thing about 2d tho is that given a dedicated team of developers, eveything that you see on the screen can be art where as in all 3d games there is some aspects of it that are just there to fill the space. taking the time to make everyting in a 3d environment beautiful is just too time consuming & isnt cost effective
Personally i couldn't play a 2D MMO, it would ruin immersion for me. I don't need like super 3D state of the art graphics, just my character "living" in a 3D world. Appearance of my character is very important for me(That"s why i love it, if games, have huge amount of options in character creation). I pretend(for my main) that"s me in the game, "living" in the fictional world, i cant get that same feeling with 2D graphics.
Played: SWG-FFXI-EQ2-Aion
Anticipated in order of Hype: ArcheAge GW2 TERA SWTOR
Not enough info, but looks promising: Blade & Soul
But surely it will depend on the 2D game's features. As you said, if it has complete features (how can we say its complete though) it would kill the boredom of players playing it. I'm talking about players who do not require heavy graphics for a game to played. I have played Wonderking and Maplestory and these games just amused me. If ever there are 2D games that will be released, I would love them if these games have features greater than the 2 games I mentioned.

I hear what you are saying, I like immersive games too & spend much time in the creation of my characters, but I have other games that satisfy that for me. Not every game has to be immersive. I've been playing Moon Diver (or was anyway..PS3...still...wont..CONNECT...grrr) its not an MMO by any stretch, but there are classes (sort of) , leveling, & multiplay, all thats missing really is a persistant world. There are things that could have been done better but its loads of fun to hook up w/ other players & put the smackdown on some 2d baddies. So I can see how a 2D MMO could be a blast if done right. It wouldnt be my one and only, I'd still need my immersion fix but I'd definitely give it a go

, I dont mind 2d at all, in fact I need it from time to time to enjoy the contrast and remind me why 3d is so great
I would if it had really good gameplay and all the features I was looking for. Unfortunately I think the 2d games out there are either trying to be to cutesy or just have awful mechanics or are gimmicky etc etc. I played UO for a while, and this was not during its hey day, but much later. I was still able to get into it though because it had depth.
I honestly would love to see a really well designed MMO in the graphical stylings of Might and Magic. I know that was kinda semi 3dish wanna be later on. But I love that art style and the worlds just some how feel more adventurous and exciting than modern 3d games.

I already play 3 2D Tile based Online RPGs in RPG Reborn and Kingdom of Drakkar. ( along with a remade version of an old game )
So my answer would be.. Yes I would play a 2D MMO.
It would have to be amazing - much like diablo 2 with their random item system etc.
I would play.
