CM declares even tighter moderation on the official forums

Slapshot1188Slapshot1188 Member LegendaryPosts: 17,721

The level of moderation has been considered by many to be way over the top/borderline censorship previously (simply do a forum search on here).  Now StarVault has declared a dramatic increase in moderation including doubling of ban lengths and infraction points as well as a general increase in posts being moderated.

default Notice of Increase in Moderation

I would like to inform everyone to expect an increased presence from the moderation team both on IRC and the Forums. This means that actions that previously were left alone, will now be acted upon. I would advise that more thought is put into making the posts, as any single "One Liners", or even "One Word" responses will be removed.

At the same time please familiarize yourself with the new infraction times, as they have been updated to reflect the increase in moderation. As a general rule, expect ban lengths, as well as infraction point lengths to be double of what they used to be in the past.

The Mortal Online forums are there to enjoy and discuss things in a positive environment, any outright negativity, trolling, or insulting will be subject to moderation, for those that have already been abiding by the rules, nothing should change only for those who have been "borderline" will find themselves dealt with much sooner.

I can't help but assume that this is in preparation for the launch of the highly anticipated DAWN expansion.  Well I hope it works out for them, but history has demonstrated that these practices have backfired for them in the past. Particularly given the fact that the customer forums are for paying customers.  I could understand if this was applied to the free forums but it appears to be a blanket policy change. We shall see.

Pretty pathetic attempts at damage control. I wonder if they realize that they are killing their own community.

That's not all that's bannable - repeated and thoughtless bashing and/or trolling would be, and should be, banned, up to and including those forum warriors on "ridiculous crusades".

Hurray for the anonymity of the internet, and people who think they have a right to say whatever they want, however they want, whenever they want, as many times as they want, on a site owned by someone else.  Sorry, no such right exists.  No such right should exist.

@Toferio:  Forum warriors often overblow the importance of forums, or misguidedly confuse the forums of a game for that game's "community".  A lot of personality types simply want to start arguments, or tear things down, on a forum.  An official forum should not be an unbearable place for a game's player to go to discuss the game.  It shouldn't be a lair for belligerent trolls to berate others and innundate threads with mindless crap so that they become unusable.

Oh, and one other thing - the official forums of just about every other game operate in about the same way.

Not to worry, though - there's always the MMORPG.com forums.  imageimageimage

Thus, the warning is there to ensure that people understand.

I've not seen it as a part of written policy, but I've seen thoughtless one-liners and one-word trolls result in bans on several other boards.  Most of them take zero thought, and do not constructively aid a thread's discussion.

Seriously, it's too easy for a poster to open up 10 threads and type non-constructive and intrusive variations of "this game sucks" or "this game's awesome".  Or, 20 threads.  Or 30 threads.

How often do one word or one line responses actually contribute to a thread?  Pretty much never, and they are usually put there to distract or inflame, according to the poster's agenda.

The game isn't worth saving truth be hold. I played it two days ago, downloaded and tried it based on the forums here from one particular MO fan who said the game was even better after the patches.

Well worst game I played in years. The game pauses at random times as you move around the world, these are lag pauses that are happening in game not due to my Internet or anything but game world issues.

The patcher is very slow, the game feels clunky, the game feels like many things were pasted in as a afterthought. The way you get your skills to hotbar is pathetic.

You gain constitution and strength while you are mining or foresting, this is kinda lame since your mining then mine skill should only raise and strength maybe but not as fast, but constitution ups from gathering skills makes no sense.

The game really lacks in so many areas, if your a fan of this type game stick to darkfall a much better game if you had to choose.

What you describe is not what is under discussion here.  It CLEARLY says "any single "One Liners", or even "One Word" responses".

No where does it say.."open up 10 threads"

This is NOTHING like any forum of any game I have ever played.

Removing one liners is stupid because you can still prove a point with only one sentence.

I would think one liners would be in reference to wity ad-libs or jokes.

If mmorpg.com moderated it's forums like StarVault is moderating it's forums half the posters would be banned, and the posters who are left would have there post counts cut in half.

You just need to be creative then

There lots of ways to tell them they are pathetic, no need to use one liners

On a positive note, I will never play any of their games so they can save a ban on me

I tried MO's free trial because I wanted to play a sandbox game. The end result of the trial was that I returned to EVE.  It seems to have been the correct choice.

    Currently bored with MMO's.

  • ShinamiShinami Member UncommonPosts: 825

    Well it goes like this

"Say a praise, you are rewarded and even considered to be cool and nice" (Congrats for being "Positive"

Say anything negative, regardless if its true or false.....Everyone in the kingdom starts to think negatively of you until they believe you no longer are "controlled" and "positive" and decide to deal with you.

I've gotten banned from forumboards simply for saying lines like "Your game is great? You mean the one that lost a lot of sales and accounts last month thanks to the fact people heard the original version of the game was superior to this version?

I've gotten banned for saying likes like "Well, you can keep doing what you want. Its your game, but if they don't like it, they will simply move on to the next korean MMO and take their money elsewhere"

My favorite was "Oh thank you very much! I feel great being 1.5 years behind the Japanese under updates and now I must buy a console to enjoy playing with more Americans in English because seems PC is TOO GOOD for an American but standard for a Japanese. YAY ME! At least I play in the Japanese version and can skip through all of this" (This one got me a warning)

My experience has always been that forum rules exist so moderators and administrators have a blue-print on how to judge anyone who they feel hurt by. There is never any real equal enforcement and everyone has to deal with "moderation styles" which always amount to popularity contests. Rather than a Moderator or Administrator actually come and say "Oh I feel hurt by your comment" they will always say "oh you broke a rule, so don't do it again" and always assume they know "FONT-ANALYSIS" and can conjure up a "Logical" Fact of your emotions from the big crystal ball that tells them all about the kind of person you are. ^_^

I've ran my own forums and servers in games and its amazing how I CAN NOT EVEN log into my own server within an MMO I ran for a long time without getting EVERYONE to ask me for stuff to the point I had to create a seperate account and log in under a new character in order to be treated as a human being and not some "God" who has the power to conjure something heavier. The exception to this were a few women in-game who knew my main character but never asked me for anything, but preffered to report on internals....They were friendly enough and I never saw them do the entire "OH we know the server host, so don't mess with me" routine.

heheh, single-line responses are allowed.  things like 'umadbro' and 'lolitrollu' are the only things you'll see be acted upon.  Common sense folks, things like "i agree", "/signed", and 'lmao' aren't gonna get you banned, it's only the snarky and angry one-liners that will raise any eyebrows.

it's like any other forum rule:  over-stated to give as much leway to the moderators as possible.

And, for perspective, I've had about 10x as many posts deleted on this forum than on SV's....

Would you consider this good? Seems like a rubbish idea to me, censorship on the internet will never work like SV, for example, is hoping it would.

If I had to guess... I would say that the new CM has never been a CM before and is feeling the heat.  Easier to censor and delete the hard questions than to answer them.   Honestly I almost feel for the guy because he has been up unto an almost unwillable situation.  Kind of like the relief pitcher who comes into the game with the score tied in the 10th inning, but the bases loaded and a 3-0 count on the batter.  But maybe DAWN will reinvigotate the population and be the miracle everyone is looking for.

This shows just how little confidence SV has in its product.

They just can't bare to have complaining customers when their server crashes or people exploit or gamebreaking bugs persist...

This illustrates their total innability to deal with the community's frustration.
