I just posted this a page ago. Its NOT a MMORPG. its a diablo clone. Aka lobby fantasy game
OK :-(
If you count games like vindictus then this is mmorpg.
Actually this is more mmorpg than vindictus since Wizardry Online's dungeons support up to 100 people per instance
dude stop it already!!! I didn't say it was bad. But don't try to pretend its something its not and wasn't meant to be. Is Code a MMORPG as well? Heck no. Is any online fps lobby shooter a MMORPG as well? Just stop it!!! So misleading. Sell the projects for what they are rather than what they not. And those games you listed are not MMORPG. Many games listed here are not MMORPG. Hey this site did a segment on Dragon age. Is that a MMORPG as well?
If only it wasn't a foreign company that was doing it, I really look foward to returning to playing a mmorpg where risk/reward means something, where team work pays off. I just tend to be doubtful of companies pulling off a game that will draw many of us when they aren't from our culture. Cultural differences and points of view make for rather odd game results/game play/game mechanics.
The advantage to a Japanese developer putting this out is that it increases the likelihood of it staying true to the original gameplay as much as possible. If an NA company got a hold of it, you could kiss traps, mazes, permadeath and all the other features that fans liked goodbye. Wizardry has a cult following here in NA, but still has a strong following in Japan
Yeah you got me there, I only played the original three that were writen by Trebor er Robert Woodhead and Andy Greenberg. I didn't play the later ones which they didn't do.
p.s: I need to correct myself I went and looked up the sofware they programed the first 5. I only played the first three I'm fairly certain and then was playing alot of the Bards Tale adventures that were coming out around the same time.
Did you know that "Trebor" now plays EVE, has been elected to the CSM (player reps) and, as it happens is in alliance with me

MMORPG _ Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.
Is it Massive? Yes it is. Is it Multiplayer? Yes it is. Is it online? Yes it is Does it have roles/ Yes it does. DO you play them? Yes. Is it a game? Yes.
If i remember correctly that as well as persistent graphical area shared by players are what is needed to label a thing as mmorpg.
So yes, while those games are NOT completely seamless. They still count as MMO in my book and books of many people, including this entire site.
Don't force your perceptions on other people.

dude stop now!!! I hate misleading marketing people like you! Mag is also massive yet its not a MMO. Massive is actually massively Multiplayer. The two M go together. Now if you trying to tell me MAG is a MMO than once again you are ether fooling yourself, or you a sneaky rogue marketer tying to snag more mislead souls.

Unknown, so far gameplay has been third person, however the gameplay trailers had fps old wizardry-like style of gameplay. So most likely changeable.
Otherwise most of stuff from Wizardry games is retained: chests with possible traps, floor traps, various kinds of traps, doors, searching the surroundings, stat-rolling in character creation, mazes, no mini-map, perma-death and so on.

The concept is more about strategy and coordination in dungeon crawling than tank and spank(as well as knowing when to run). SOMETIMES, its a lot more worthwhile AVOIDING monsters and sneaking past them to reach your goal than engaging them.
Its a basic riskvs rewards - do you open the chest, trying to disarm it and either get severly hurt/get the loot inside or do you leave it alone.
Do you confront the terible beast in the hallway or do you run the hell away.
Do you go with the biggest party you can muster or the most trusted people in smaller one.
Do you leave the best equips in the storage so if you die next character of yours can use them, or do you take them to use in dungeon.
Do you go further the maze trusting in your capabilities and health or do you turn back before getting lost in it.
Also note that it features old-school character-rolling in that you roll a number at the char creation screen and upon that your starter stats and growth depend.
Game also features active dodge systems and twitch combat.
Definitly the way rpg game should be built if they were a bit more fidel to the rpg genre and a bit less fidel to the usual arcade gaming genre. Remind me the old school rpg games. So ye it definitly interest me. My comment about the trinity was a pure sarcasm in fact.

Permadeath happens if you fail to reach your corpse. Your new rolled character then can use whatever you left in storage for him to inherit.
IMO it make achieving something that more valuable and respectable. running a dungeon is no longer a chore, but a challenge and being high level and having good gear actually means you have skill and luck.

You and a handfull of other people. For all the other people thats needed to keep a game in business, the will show up kick the tires and wander off because of the rule set. Enjoy the ghost town that will become this game over time.
These "handful" of people I guess are half of a nation meanwhile, all players feeling uncared by current mainstream crap. Wizardry btw. was kinda introduction of CRPGs into the mainstream for itself. But the foundation was done by roguelikes where perma death was everydays bread and butter. Money corrupted all of the better ideas into good looking, pointless fluffiness. Actually I hardly can believe this dream will become true...

My sentiments exactly.
RPG games overall used to be a very rewarding experience. something that required planning, skill and capability of mind.
Nowadays rpgs are nothing more than cinematic story movies with controllable dialogue, while mmos boild down to the usual completionist faire.
Hopefully this game will break the mold and return the whole "enjoying the moment and playing to play" thing to mmos.

This is awesome news! It may not be a true MMO, but I loved the Wizardry games as a kid, even if I was too young to play them to their fullest. And Dir En Grey contributing to the soundtrack?!?! I'm sold.
It will be interesting to see how they implement such an unpopular feature. I believe harsh death penalties can create an extra layer for Online RPGs, but just because it's permadeath doesn't mean that the death penalty will be harsh. It depends a lot on the other mechanics of the game.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Bookmark this post and visit back once game is out. but make sure you do because your claim regarding 'half a nation' is going to be proven wrong. Don't be surprised if this game dwindles and disappear under the radar like many other asian F2P titles.
Funny though it is not even a MMORPG. So your comparison makes little sense.
if leveling up,aquiering items and skills, is so damn fun that i want to permadie so i can do all of it over again...then i am all for it..however i cant help but think that introducing permadeath is a great way to give people reasons to quit, when they would have just kept playing.
im interested, however i dont see permadeath being a big hit...hell most gamers cant get over the loss of pixles when refering to full loot pvp...how the hell are they expecting to draw an audience who could possibly lose their loot and their character.
will be a good way to create an enviroment where no one takes any risk and avoids permadeath at all costs...not sure that something that will work well.
best of luck to them, and im sure ill give it a go just because its diffrent, despite the fact that i hate the games name....wisardry online doesn scream "horror and permadeath" to me...
I'd say I'm one of the few people on this site who played and beat Wizardry on the Nintendo. Unless I'm remembering incorrectly that was also permadeath. I can't remember exactly how it worked, since that was about 20 years ago. I do remember it was one of the toughest games I've ever played.
I really enjoyed that game. Heck, normally I buy a game play it for a week or two and don't even bother trying to beat it. I think it says something about how good that game was for me to stick it out and beat it.
I don't see much of an audience for permadeath, though. I guess we'll have to see how its implemented.

Well, Vindictus isn't a mmorpg, but since their development team did stay at a Holiday Inn at the time of the announcement, so that probably counts.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

I'm hooked, bring it on, can't wait, yes yes yes, finally real gaming is back, hail to the king baby!
Another "preview" video I found which displays some kind of old maze and the catacombs below it (really love the music and art style right now )(just noticed that it also shows off vertical and horizontal fire traps that would spring upon you if you stepped on them carelessly)

Everything about this sounds great, except Permadeath+Open PvP. One or the other, but not both please.
I don't want to lose my character because of some dick PKer who camps my corpse and never lets me get it back.
I remember the Wizardy series having an element of si-fi as well, I wonder if this new game will also have si-fi in it as well?
