Why is it so hard to re-trace back or find out who these people are?  The IP address would visible from which ever LuLSec person that owns the Twitter account and facecbook account - right?   What am I missing here?

It's not that hard to mask your IP through the use of Proxies and whatnot. We just got to hope they screw up soon. With the amount of bragging they do that may not be to long.

all of these hacks that have been going on lately are a response to the doj making hacking an official act of war

this is hackers way of saying "well then if what im doing is an act of war, i may as well fucking go for it then"

dumbest move by the us government ever.  they basically called out every hacker in the world to actually do the things they werent actually doing all that much before.

    Games i'm playing right now...

So the question remains, how long will the game be down?

    minutes

    hours

    days

    weeks

    I wonder....

probably not even that.. most common DDOS is using a 'disposable' botnet to carry it out.. sort of a 'fire and forget' method.. back tracking is increasingly difficult... probably not impossible... all it does is highlight that these people are criminals really.. botnets etc.. are the tools of organised crime after all.. image

And the net result will be headines like this one that turns the public against the free internet community, gets these goverenment entities much larger budget allocations for training, manpower, and tech, and gets more draconian laws passed to even further threaten net neutrality. The people pulling this "look at me look at me" crap are just the new breed of wannabes. The real cowboys don't need to keep proving to themselves and others how skilled they are, they already know.

That's what they would like people to think. In reality, it's because it's the only thing in life they don't fail at.

According to Massively.com it wasn't just the EVE servers that got attacked today...

Apparently Minecraft and The Escpaist Magazine website got hit too.

  • ComnitusComnitus Member Posts: 2,462

Lulz Sec got some data from Bethesda and also penetrated the Senate website, though they claim to do it to "expose flaws in the system."

Whatever these guys' intentions are, they're script kiddies who are embarassing major companies and it's time the companies woke up and realized they need to keep their security up-to-date. Sony kept users' passwords in PLAINTEXT. Are you SERIOUS? And I heard they were bested by an SQL injection attack, right down there with DoS attacks on the easy scale.

I seriously don't think these guys are white hats; they're doing it... you guessed it... for teh lulz. They also seem to have a crusade against Sony and any company that affiliates with it (DUST 514 on PS3, Minecraft first mobile device is a Sony phone, etc.)

Minecraft seems to be working fine for me though. Just tried and had no issue with login and all that.

Maybe you should read up a bit, The Official act of war was because they got hacked in the first place.

From Eve's Facebook page, "EVE Online and related services experienced an Internet attack. We have taken them down as a security precaution until further notice."

From Eve's Twitter feed, "EVE Online and related services are currently offline, to return ASAP after investigation of some issues"

Thought I'd post these so you guys could follow them as they seem to be the only direct info from CCP until their webpage is back up.

Governments already want to take control of the internet and have harder restrictions applied to what happens in their country, this sort of behaviour is only really giving them more ammunition to defend the passing of these bills that will ultimately affect us all, that is the sad bit.

Excellent logic. Lets apply this to some other things that are also illegal....

These individuals should be placed behind bars for a good long time. Long enough that when they finally get out their knowledge of computers would be like someone getting out now that used to work on punch card systems. They are attention whores. They are epic fail to try and claim they are trying to 'help' the moment they go public to gloat about it. Send the network admin a cute little ha ha letter if you need and tell them what you did and how they can fix it. The customers of these companies pay real money for their services and when they deny them those services it is the same as stealing money from their pocket. This is a crime and I will applaud the day when pre-pubecent dipshits like this are locked away for the better majority of their lives.
