i must agree with some people here....for me it will be D3 since gw2 is still not impressing me neither.
Dont get me wrong....it looks fine but just the looping of "dynamic" events dont seem to be THE next evolution (these dynamic events have been done in rift and people were not that impressed either) in gaming.
the only reason it will be big is because it will be free of fee imho
Probably the quickest way to get a response on the GW2 forums is to say DEs were already done in Rift.
There are actually vast differences and even if GW2's implementation of them ends up being total fail (it won't), the concept is fantastic and a vast improvement over both rifts and traditional quests. Probably the best explanation you're going to find is here http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1013691/Designing-Guild-Wars-2-Dynamic but it's a very long video. I'll try to summarize.
The first reason that DEs are better than rifts is context. With a rift, a hole in the sky is opened and mobs come out. They can add variety of mobs and minigames for beating them, but each rift doesn't really have its own story outside the overall world being invaded. DEs on the other hand are replacing quests across the board in GW2. So virtually any kind of quest can be done. One example they give is that there are friendly ogres who want to get water to feed their pets. First event in one chain is to clear out the harpies at the oasis. Next is to protect the ogres from the wild animals who are also trying to get water now that the harpies are gone. Third is to escort them back home. Even if the first quest in the chain is just a kill X event, the whole sequence ties together in a mini arc that can't be reproduced in Rift.
The second thing is that events chain from one to another. This keeps people working together and encourages them to be social. Rifts are one shot events. Even if you're rifthunting and so is that stranger, there's no real reason both of you are going to go off in the same direction. That was a problem with WAR's PQs as well. People show up, do them, and then scatter. With GW2, everybody involved has a reason to follow the chain.
Related to this, DEs are the open world content of GW2. There's 1500-1600 of them (at least). One of the problems with Rift is that if you're not in the mood to do a rift, you might end up doing it because it's in the way of the quest hub you wanted to get to. With GW2, you're going to see these events happening and jump in and save the day (or you'll have already teleported to where you wanted to go). The playerbase won't be divided between quests, rifts, and invasions.
I've posted about why DEs are a lot better than traditional quests before, and I apologize for constantly linking to my earlier thoughts but this post is getting long already and I think it's better than double posting or writing even more here.

Rift repeats the same dynamic event a zillion times (ok, the same 2 if you consider invasions a separate one). Big surprise that it gets boring after a while, what would you think if all quests in a game told you to go and kill 10 things even if the thing was changing? It would be exactly the same thing. Rifts DEs are just a random spawn of a random group of monster that you must kill or run away.
GW2s DEs are more like a quest that you get when you passes by. It is a new way of giving out quests, if you think that is the same as Rifts you really need to read up a bit on this. Some of these quests are pretty large and they are linked together like quest chains.
And GW2 is far more than DEs, it is the largest MMO releasing in a long time with an excellent engine and lore written by an actual author (who BTW created Forgotten realms together with Ed Greenwood). 5 Starting areas (, + Lions arch is at least 6 cities).
It is of course fine that you don't like it but please say that you don't like it because it isn't item based like Wow instead, or something similar that actuaklly is true.
I am buying both GW2 and D3 no matter when they release. Greatly looking forward to both games and I have been planning to play both since I knew about them. I like playing multiple games instead of just sticking to one all the time.
Why should it? Judging by how Blizzard rolls, Guild Wars 2 is likely to be out a good year or so before Diablo 3 sees the light of day. Nonetheless, I'll be getting them both.

Well said, and just to add to this...
Rift also had a quest grind as its main advancement mechanism whereas GW2 doesn't. Why does this matter you ask? Because when you were quest grinding in Rift, the Rift events or invasions were typically just an annoyance. You would be happily grinding along and then BAM your town gets taken over by MOBs 4 levels above you and you have to plea for help from higher level players before you can advance.
GW2 will have no quest grinding though. Everything will be a dynamic event, so you'll never run into a situation where you can't turn in a quest because centaurs took over the town. You'll want to take the town back because that IS the quest. And if you are too weak, no biggy, just go find another event.
I think this is a huge distinction, and I think it's where WAR and Rift faltered. They both tried to add some kind of public questing while keeping the solo quest grind as the main advancement mechanism. They just don't mix.
Im in the camp of thought that Diablo 3 wont have any type of ripple effect on GW2, since it is most likely that GW2 will be released way before Diablo 3, but more importantly, GW2 is an mmo while Diable 3 is a single-player lobby system RPG.
Diablo 3 wont even be on my radar, other than as a time-killer in the event that at the time of its' launch there isn't another actual entertaining mmo to play, but I hope that isn't the case.
Heh , wtf is Diablo 3? Ohhhhhh yea, that game that ressembles TorchLight.
I highly doubt that Diablo3 will affect Gw2 sales , if any sales at all , since Torchlight 2 will be released before D3 at the rate Blizzard is going. Won't be buying D3 since I played Torchlight , and I'll get TL2 before D3 since the TL series is made by the REAL people who made the Diablo series.

I'd get them both, but definitely GW2 first. There's a reason I'm on the GW2 boards but not the Diablo3 boards .
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Of course not, Diablo isn't an MMORPG lol.

Purchasing GW2 may affect me buying Diablo 3, not the other way around.
