So far the only thing i dont like is that there will be no mounts, yeah i know there is a port system but it still makes me question the overall size and structure of the world..
Not to mention how cool it would have been to jump in the water on a horse and watch it convert to a sea lion or something! hehehehe
Every game will have things some or even many players dont like thats just the way it is and GW2 will be no exception.
If you want the perfect game you have to make it yourself and then you will quickly find out that your idea of the perfect game wasnt so perfect for others...;)
Ok, that was a good article, thanks for the links Zeroxin. I actually liked what the author had to say, and I do feel a bit more positive about the game. Two concerns I do have are deal with underwater/water movement and the raising the fallen character. I have a hard time with ignoring "normal" movement while in water as someone who until injuries spent a lot of time over the past five decades in the water. Don't get me wrong it isn't a deal breaker for me as a gamer, but it is something that does irk me a little.
On the second concern, I am not sure how I feel about how dying/defeated and the mechanics for retoring/raising a fallen characte work. I like a risk/reward system where when you screw up you screw up and have to put some effort into recovering. That's just me, I know many don't feel that way. So it is a concern.
I'd love to see more info on crafting, profession skills and such. Getting more info on that might twitch me over from just sitting on the fence and watching to playing. Gotta love their offices btw, I live not to far from that area so I'm familiar with that style of building design that the author of the article talked about. It is a nice envirement to work in.
After reading this topic, the first post actually, I'm not very excited for Guild Wars 2. The dynamic events are going to be like the Rifts in Rift, just boring, repetitive, and they'll just get in the way.
Underwater combat? A significant portion of the game? I'm one of those people that don't like a lot of underwater stuff. Maybe a small exploration, or a hidden passage down there, but not a lot.
No mounts? Not a huge deal, but collecting mounts is more fun than collecting gear!
Watch this and wait for the part where Colin Johansen starts to talk about a dynamic event.

Well currently GW1 prophecies is one of the biggest MMO worlds (based on the map size comparison I've seen several times) and Anet is saying that GW2 is even bigger. Now to give you an idea of how big GW1 is; if an NPC in Ascalon was to ask me "Could you go to the Grove on foot(sylvari starter area) and deliver this parcel?" I'd slap him twice and ask if he'd like to buy me a mount because getting there in GW1 will most likely take about an hour (give or take). Now compare that to GW2 which they say is bigger, I'll probably add 20-30 minutes to that number when going on foot.
I don't feel inclined to read to the whole thread but this one caught my eye. Could you point towards the source link where this is said? So far my understanding was that the DE's ran on the same script, in that DE's can be linked in a large chain, but each DE itself can be in several states but still one script that steers it towards either fail or succeed. Sure, they might trigger different other DE's, some DE's that will appear when a town is conquered by mobs and some other DE's that will appear when a town is rescued and at peace, but they still run that one script of theirs.
Only dungeons from what I read have multiple scenarios and scripts that are run in it and that you can choose or influence.
edit: I just realised that maybe you meant "the same script for ALL the events", if that was what you meant, then you're right of course and you can forget my question, the script that runs 1 DE can be very different from the script that runs another DE.
For the most part, this is correct. While Rifts in Rift are pretty much all same (note - I said pretty much...) GW2 has DE's that vary from combat, non-combat, defense, offense, escourt, searches, slaughter, hunting and a few more. Each DE does however run on a one-line path, the one that can change is which way the DE is headed. It is either onwards to victory for the players, or if it's too hard, heading towards defeat for players.
I just dont see it..Why people are looking forward GW2 so much. Ive watched all the Videos on even went threw the GW2 Website and The only thing i see this has going for it is F2P. Underwater combat has been done before..World events done.. Making decisions that matter its been all been done.
GW2 IMO is like the south park episode where butters is a bad guy and his side kick keeps saying simpsons did it, and thats fine that its been done i just dont see how this will be any different then any other mmo out now or that will be out.
I feel the biggest turn off is the lack of Tank, Healer, Dps.. if i had to put a random number to the badness or the avg mmo player just trying to play 1 role it would be over 1/2 of them are terrible at just trying to fill one role. but again just IMO
I don't think you are actually seeing whats good in GW2. Obviously not everyone will like GW2, and I could care less, but at least see it this way...
GW2 is different. It is not god, but it is different. I could list a BUNCH of stuff that makes it different from other MMO's. When you compare it to other genres, GW2 is just a game, but when you compare it other MMO's, it's really quite different. And I don't mean extensively different, but is at least stepping it up in areas where other games didn't do so well.
You've seen underwater combat, but have you seen the z-axis put to use? How many good MMO's can you sink or float an opponent? How many MMO's build underwater as a free open world instead of being limited by a breath bar? How many MMO's change your skills underwater so that they make sense AND utilize the full scale of underwater? Sure in various games you may have this feature or that feature, the cool thing is, GW2 takes the best features, adds what they think would be a good feature, and implements it into one thing.
How many MMO's have a downed state? How many MMOs let you select a handful of skill instead of being able to use nearly every skill that the next player has? If a warrior is open to use 90% of his skills, than he is practically the same as the next warrior, for that warrior is open to 90% of his skills. But GW2 makes sure you have to plan. You don't just walk in with the same 100 skills that a similar class would. You only get abut 10% of the skills, meaning you are more than likely different from the player playing the same class.
As for the trinity... if a game has a trinity, that means a sytem is put into place. I know a warrior is tank, I know a cleric is a healer. It's that simple (or somethine similar) When talking about both PvP and PvE, learning a system is not as fun as learning to react, time, and adapt. Especially in PvP, a trinity means that each class's strength and weakness is known. I know what I can beat and what I cannot beat, for the most part. When you have a flexible class such as GW2 or other a few other MMO's, it becomes more reaction and adapting than just "doing the motions."
Now when you look at it as the whole picture, how many MMO's have open world dynamic events, a REAL storyline, an underwater experience different from on land, adaptive tactics instead of learning a system, and limited skill selection that promotes proper planning.
Now I know some games have some of those features, but to bundle everything together, with all the OTHER features that are being put into GW2 such as voice-over, housing, unique races, very liittle grind... it's much better than the standard kill - level up- kill bigger this - level up - kille biggest this - level up.
So yea, it's not something amazingly new or unique, but's it definitley not the same MMO as everyother MMO.
I said its been done before i never stated its been done all in the same game. I guess im just not fooled by underwater combat with special items/skills that are just for underwater water zones have been done I.E Wow Not saying its the best but its been done.
How do you imagine underwater combat will be? Lets use our two mouse buttons as our legs and spam it so we can race faster? Underwater combat becomes lets race to point X and see hows faster? It's combat, how different did you expect it to be....... -.-
Rift has world events heck even wow has them at the end of expacs. personal story with world impacting decisions
Last time I checked Rift's events tells almost no story, I liked their dynamic events, but those events are parallel to others, completing one does not affect other dynamic events at all. Not sure about WoW since I never played that game.
guess MY point being im not sure how GW2 is breaking the mmo mold when really its the same that been out or thats coming out. again IMO heck i will still proabbly try the game dont get me wrong it looks fun but i just dont see why people feel this is the end all be all mmo /
Not sure who is projecting this as the "end all be all mmo", to me, GW2 is the start of a very new beginning, the MMO that takes game design to a new age.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Mounts are a trivial issue with me. They're either there or they aren't, and I could care less.
Underwater Combat
I agree with you here, being underwater should cause you some danger. The locals should have an extreme
advantage and you should feel on your toes at all times because you're out of your element.
However, there will be an explanation as to why you're able to breathe underwater limitlessly.
WvWvW Roundrobin Matches and Lack of Open World PvP
The WvWvW Roundrobin seems fine to me.
Pretty sure they're going to add a PVP option.
No opposing Factions, Everyone in your world is a friend
This, I disagree with you on.
Everyone in the world being your friend doesn't tie in with the lore of Guild Wars 2.
All the playable races have come together "enlightened" and work toward one goal of peace.
HOWEVER, did you know the Charr and human used to have a feud? Not everyone is friends.
And if the developers know what they're doing, they're going to allow you a PVP Server/Option.
A PVP Server/Option will allow you to gank players without their knowledge.
Killing a fellow player should result in consequences.
Defending a fellow player from someone attacking them should result in rewards.
Defeating an enemy player attacking you should also result in rewards OR nothing at all.
This is all in speculation, however. All I'm sure of is that there will be open world PVP between unsuspecting players.
You get an A for effort!
I don't think you've put much thought into this one.
Do you really think players are going to bash rocks together until an event is almost finished
JUST so they don't have to do any of the work? I don't think so. People are playing this game
to have FUN. Participating in the ENTIRE event is fun, and people aren't going to jump for joy
just because they arrive at an event at the last minute to recieve the rewards. They'll probably
say: "Aw shucks, I didn't make it in time. I missed out on all the fun!"
This will lead players to trying to jump in on events ASAP.
Also, rewards will be severely cut down for players that are late for the party.
Non Dynamic, Dynamic Events
Again, you haven't thought this through.
First of all, it would make you feel heroic should a protected villiage stay that way after you protect it,
but what if you want to experience it again? It would be there for you.
Second, you're afraid that after playing through the game levels 1-80, It will feel repetetive
because you're just going through the same events over again if you decide to make a new character.
This wouldn't make sense because Events only happen once a day. Players don't want to wait one day cycle to be able to continue.
There will be a plethora of different events to experience at each level as there will be a plethora of different routes to take on the map leading to them.
So you saved a villiage from a bandit raid on your Elementalist on your first playthrough and now you're on your alternate character wanting a different experience? no problem. Take the East route rather than the West route you took on your Elementalist and find a new event to partake in.

They're not going to add PvP to the PvE world of Tyria (unless there is significant demand fo a seperate server). It goes against their design philosophies, which emphasise co-operation. Colin has said that the devs want seeing another player to be a good thing in PvE, always. Friendly fire doesn't exist and most of their gameplay is designed around co-operation, dynamic events especially.
Besides, with WvW, there's no real need for PvP in the PvE world. -shrugs-

Agreed, they should just take PvP out of the game, its not like people enjoy it.....

As far as dynamic events being more or less binary, I think that's actually a good thing. Suppose ArenaNet has coded up 9 events. If those are broken up into three areas, A->B->C is one chain, D->E->F is another, and G->H->I. A player sees all 9 events if they're running when they pass through the area. If instead there's multiple outcomes, it might go from A->(B, C or D)->(E, F, G, H or I). Players only see 3 of them. Same amount of work, a lot less payoff unless you want players to stand in the same area over and over and try to get different outcomes (ok guys, let's win the event, but let the gate be destroyed this time).
I do think it's a good thing that events chain, but mostly because they keep people working together for an extended period of time, less so because the world changes.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Mounts are something that you think would be really cool. Mounts in the real world changed the face of war. Cavalary in the middle ages could literally just run over an infantry unit. But in just about every MMORPG, all a mount is, is a speed buff with a unique graphic. That's it. No combat advantage. No special combat techniques. Just a speed buff. I can live without it.
2. Underwater Combat
The underwater breathing doesn't bother me, they do explain it. If I can accept an elementalist shooting fire from his bare hands, then yeah I can accept breathing apparatuses existing. As for the speed, yeah it's a bit unrealistic, but slow swimming SUCKS. I wouldn't want to go underwater if I moved as slow as I do in WoW when I swim.
3. WvWvW PvP
Contrary to your belief this IS open world PvP. It's just not persistent for more than a week and basically gets reset. But when you think about it, the only thing that could "persist" is the ownership of certain objectives. And that should realistically change frequently anyway. So the resetting doesn't bother me.
If this was going to be persistent it would mean that you would always be going against the same two servers. This would nearly always lead to one or two servers becoming the dominant ones.
4. No opposing factions
I really can't say anything good about opposing factions. When you have opposing factions you either allow open-world PvP, or you don't. If you allow it, then you have a gankfest. The players feel like it's "okay" to kill low level members of the opposing faction because they are at war. But in reality, it's no different than ganking newbies in any other game.
And if you DON'T allow PvP then it's even stupider. When two members of opposing factions encounter each other they either completely ignore each other, or one of thing follows the other around jumping like an idiot and using emotes in a vain attempt to "enrage" his enemy into accepting a duel. Stupid.
5. A for Effort
Well you get less of a reward if you come in and get one lucky shot before the event ends. The rewards are split into Gold, silver and bronze. If you just "tag" a MOB at the end of an event you get bronze. As long as ANet designs events so it is not more profitable to just run around tagging events than it is to actually participate in them, then I don't think this will be a problem.
6. Dynamic Events
As other posters have stated, they aren't linear. They are basically branching public quests. They aren't magical and they won't just create content out of thin air, but I think they are a major improvement of the traditional quest grind.
Hm. All valid points. I shall counter with my personal opinions
1. Mounts: Agree and disagree. I agree with those who say they're unnecessary, and may simply not work with the seamed nature of the world (flying mounts, that is). On the other hand I agree with you and others for one simple reason: they're kinda fun. As much as I dislike WoW, I loved riding around on my flying mount or my horse and just exploring
2. Underwater Combat: In this, I completely disagree. I have never found timers like breathing meters entertaining in a game, ever. They don't make me worried, or think more tactically, they simply make underwater content annoying. Then again I may be biased, as I love diving, and I absolutely love exploring the ocean floor indefinitely (well, not really, but in that case, I have an extremely long timer, which dones;t really limit me). Just chilling there and watching fish, and looking at things under the sea is much more fun than worrying about holding my breath.
3. WvWvW: I can see your opinions and worries here, and I can't really comment as I have no experience with this kind of content. I do, however, think it will be much more balanced than a 2 faction system, like WoW, where the Horde absolutely demolishes th alliance, or even GW, where the faction of the month completely dominates everywhere. It should work, but we'll just have to see.
4. No Opposing Factions: Again, I see what you don't like here. Personally, I don't like this factions system, as it divides both players, and even content. Not much more to be said, really.
5. Rewards: Frankly, this one just seems like you may have missed some info here. As others have stated, you only get rewards based on your level of participation. If you come late into the event, you will be rewarded, yes, but your reward will be miniscule compared to those that slaved through the whole thing.
6. Dynamic Events: This one also seems a bit misinformed, though you may have just interpreted information differently than what i saw through my awesome GW2-fanboy-tinted glasses XD It seems to me that they are more complex than you think, but again, we won't really know until we can see it fully for ourselves. Either way, I am of the opinion that even if they're not terribly dynamic or complex, they are still a great (and awesome) leap forwarad in MMO gaming.
So yeah. My opinions on your opinions ^ ^ All seem like valid concerns, so we'll wait and see. Meet you in-game ;D

so did England and France, ohh but wait now there are alliance and treaties that make the countries be friends...next time really read into the lore before you make comments like that, because you have no idea what you are talking about.
The Queen , The Vigil, and The Iron Legion works hard to get the Claw of Kahn Urr which lead to to Iron leagion being able to Domanate the others and take control. This was a back room deal that lead to this alliance. They are friends, sure there are racist like tensions but there are worse things happening in the world then bitter arguements, THEY ARE ALLIES
The thing i most hate about this game is the number of uninformed ppl saying that GW2 will fail for a number of reasons they read somewhere, place they forgot where it was, and completely ignoring the fact theres not a single bad review about this game until now

It's a truce, but it's a wary truce with a lot of tension. The asura and sylvari have a turbulent relationship too, since until very recently, the asura enslaved the sylvari as 'worker bees'. There are also three playable factions (The Vigil, Durmand Priory, Order of Whispers) which disagree on how to combat the elder dragons, while there are a number of non-playable factions (White Mantle, Flame Legion, Nightmare Court etc.) which have completely different agendas to PCs and their allies. The races are alllies, not friends - there's a big difference.
It's not as if the world lacks depth just because players can't cheaply gank one another in the middle of a dynamic event.

As a matter of fact, people on servers will be killing plenty of all five races on their own server... just none of them will be players.
Yes, there are people who are against the peace treaty, but everybody who plays GW2 is automatically a good guy, and violating the peace treaties in face of the dragon threat apparently counts as being a bad guy.
So... yeah. Of course there are Charr who hate humans, and try to kill them and ignore the treaty (and vice versa). They're just all your enemies in the game. :T

I will be at PAX this year. Demos are just a small part of the entire game.
Most importantly what I wrote wasn't a review of anything, and short previews of a demo build aren't cognisant of what to expect from a live game, just a very small portion therein.

You should spend your hour of playtime (Or whatever they give you) swimming underwater, so you can come back and complain about GW2 underwater stuff in a more informed fashion!

You can read about profession skills and combat on the Guildwars2.com site and you can read about crafting on the Arenanet blog. If you want to check out how the skill mechanics may work there is a skill tool that tries to give us a glimpse of that.

Well currently GW1 prophecies is one of the biggest MMO worlds (based on the map size comparison I've seen several times) and Anet is saying that GW2 is even bigger.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
No mounts
-shrugs-
"Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right. This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"
And that is not always the case, watch the MMO report interviews and really pay attention when Colin is talking about DEs.
Agreed, they should just take PvP out of the game, its not like people enjoy it.....
Uhh... what?
It's not true you know it, and they know it." -Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
Here's my take on the OP's gripes...
1. No Mounts
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
I pretty much agree with OP.
Specially mounts and underwater. I just love mounts and underwater content.
I might be ok with the breathing gear but the normal speed just no, it won't feel like water.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)
so did England and France, ohh but wait now there are alliance and treaties that make the countries be friends...next time really read into the lore before you make comments like that, because you have no idea what you are talking about.
The thing i most hate about this game is the number of uninformed ppl saying that GW2 will fail for a number of reasons they read somewhere, place they forgot where it was, and completely ignoring the fact theres not a single bad review about this game until now
I wouldn't expect any reviews on it as the game hasn't launched yet.
Of course! There isn't any playable demo a reviewer could play in a game event, right?
Sorry, my bad!
Seriously, why need mounts if you can teleport to waypoints across the game?
And chars move quite fast too.
Tbh this is only one case with mmo that i totally dont care what others like or dislike as im 100% sure ill like the game and plenty of other ppl
thousands of people already had played it and will play again on pax and gamescom 2011
"Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right. This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"
