When you're finished breathing at me, perhaps you could expound upon your point.
I don't want a story that someone else gives me. I don't want a 'choose your own adventure' progression from cutscene to cutscene. I want the tools to make my own story, a dynamic story that belongs to me, and that doesn't require voiceover, storyline or graphics.
The game could look like Minecraft for all that I care. I learned to be wary of multimedia hype years ago when I beta-tested Outpost.
Name me a game where you can craft your own story 100%?
You can't because in reality every game is a themepark. Some just happen to have some sandbox thrown in. You can only do what the dev team allows you to do. That is every single game...
In SWTOR you do have the choice, just like you did in Mass Effect or Dragon Age or Fallout or other "decision" based game, where your dialog shapes your own story line. Play as a Bounty Hunter, you won't take the same path as your friend who is also playing a BH.
Just a side note.. not EVERY game is a themepark.. just take a look at minecraft...
and on topic i've VERY much so in the Voice over camp.. i like the graphics the game has now (i have see it first had). and really IMO graphics only add so much.. to me.. WoW graphics are still very acceptable.. but on the other has i dont care for the graphics of games like EQ2 the ultra realalistic.. i also still think UO (CLASSIC clinet) are still fine for that game.. the newer engines i dont like
But the voice over.. thats what i like.. in most MMOs i usually just skip reading the text and get the objective and run.. in the few MMOs that have has some VO work i have really like having it.. Star trek online, AoC ect. one i played DDO after it went free to play.. got off the first island.. and the VO going though the last dungeon made it SOOOO awesome, that was the biggest highlight in the game to me in that game
And Minecraft is a sandbox yes but you can't create a story out of something that isn't there.
Have you looked? Check out Youtube and you'll see as many machinama stories built in Minecraft as World of Warcraft.
There are hundreds of private servers, building their own gameplay mods to build communities full of individual stories, using methods and tools that none of the current MMOs have even considered.
Minecraft is a BETA and it's sold more copies than Bioware projects they'll sell at launch. I can log into Minecraft right now and have my choice of worlds and gamesets. Whether I want to build and operate a skyship, make my own Jurrasic Park full of dinosaurs or fly on the back of my own tamed dragon, I can do that in Minecraft.
Of course it's not MMO, but neither were MUDS. Minecraft offers the same tools that DIKU did, but instead of being derived from a text-based scroller, it is designed from the ground up as an integrated 3D platform.
There's plenty there if you look, and there's an incredible amount of development and story production there that isn't something designed like it came from a Hollywood process-mill.
It's a valid proof of concept that invalidates any argument of processed polish. The AAA studios would do well to pay attention to it.
Minecraft is a BETA and it's sold more copies than Bioware projects they'll sell at launch.
LOL WHAT!
Minecraft has sold around 2 million copies and will recieve a boost when it drops on Xbox Arcade but it has not outsold any Bioware game. Nor will it outsell TOR at its launch.
The reason you can craft gameplay is because Notch lets you. Mods are add-ons to the game which are programmed by other players not simply built inside of the game.
If the graphics are up to par I might stop at a particularly nice location and grab a screenshot or two, and I will put a focused effort into the appearance of my toons. If the graphics are weak, then I don't care about my toon it's just about getting to the next goal.
If there isn't audio to the npc's handing out quests then I just skip through the dialogue pressing 1 repeatedly until I'm ready to move on to doing the quest. If there is a full voice over then I do the exact same thing and get to hear "well done hero you... huzzah for y... there is ... I will... good luck hero!" and on to the next quest. If it was a full voice over and they just made little statements like "Good Job" or "Thank you" or "You bloody well ROCK!" then I wouild enjoy it more, rather then the broken dialoge of a full voice over (because of how I deal with it) Not to mention that alot of my playtime is later on at night, meaning I have to keep the sound low or wear an uncomfortable headset.
So my vote it for graphics.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
Considering I haven't played SWTOR yet, and haven't experienced full voiced MMO, I can't truthfully answer this lopsided poll.
Same here. I cannot truthfully answer this poll. I voted neither, because I have never played a full voiced over MMORPG. And pretty graphics don't appeal to me if the gameplay is crappy.
Still would choose graphics over full voice if I really had to.
Fully voiced - I dont need that neither in single player neither in mmorpg's. It just costs insane amount of money and developer time which would better be used to give better game mechanics, better crafting , more & better quests, maps , jsut content and gameplay. I just dont understand popularity of voice in game
It is good for cinematics but apart of that meh...

Imagine that we could turn back time and influence Bioware in whatever way we wanted. You can either tell them to spend money on more graphical enhancements instead of a fully voiced MMO or you can keep the game the way it is looking today. What will you choose? There is no option to have both, you must choose one or the other.
Again: Would you rather have the fully voiced MMO it is today? Or would you rather use the recources used for the voice acting to put into higher quality graphics. (NOTE: I did not mention changing the gameplay in ANY way, Just the graphics.)
Just a fun thread, just gathering you guys' input.
I would rather only have to buy a 500RAM chip in order to play TOR. Then a whole new computer Thank you.

LOL JUST LOL FFS
PS3 had a outdated nvidia chip before it even left the production line compared to the PC

You didn't anser the question: answer the question. Forget the sandbox crap, SWTOR is a themepark MMO, deal with it. If you still are looking for a sandbox style of MMO then you're out of luck, the vast majority of MMO's is themepark based in case you've grown out of touch with current reality in the MMO genre.
So start showing some common sense and regard it in the design approach it belongs to, the themepark/game oriented 'school' of MMO design and not the sandbox/world oriented 'school' of MMO design. In case you haven't been paying attention, that's the school that as good as all MMORPG's of the last 5-6 years have belonged to.
So, again the question: your only choice is to play a themepark MMO, what do you prefer: textbased quest leveling with no choices or decisions in the quests you do except do them - the current way of quest based leveling in most MMO's - or SWTOR's story immersive quest leveling with VO, cutscenes and decisions that can lead to different results.
Because we're talking about quest based leveling in themepark styled gameplay, in case you're not familiar with themepark MMO's as a whole: if you hate BW's approach to trying to improve that gameplay part, then apparently you must love for things to stay as they are now in themepark MMO's.

But you fail to understand that sandbox games do not work with mass numbers of players... SWG was a very successful sandbox only because the devs let us work inside of the reality they created.

As for them holding back copies, you shouldn't have to guess anything. It's called 'generating artificial demand'.
I disagree about this being a marketing ploy for artificial demand (said the same thing in another post where you said the same thing)... here's what I wrote:
I think you're being a bit short-sighted. Almost every recent MMO has had a rocky launch, and that's typically due to droves of people trying to access the servers all on the very first day. The only way to handle that kind of load is to add more servers... BUUUT... then in a month when not everybody renews their subscription, now you have a bunch of semi-empty servers.
I respect BioWare/EA for their approach. Rather than flood the game on day 1 (i.e. scrounging for every last penny possible), they're actually saying that they will NOT try to make max $$, and instead are more interested in it being a smooth launch and a positive experience. Then they'll gradually add in more people each month to keep the servers all full, and keep the starter zones relatively the same population (as early players will have already moved on to higher level zones).
I applaud them... smart guys over there at BioWare!
I reject the question. If presented with only those two choices, I will reject both and work to enhance the value of third-party options, while promoting awareness of the growing dissatisfaction with shell-game themeparks.
Then this is not the right place for you. Let me spell it out for you: THEMEPARK design of gameplay.
Quest based leveling plays a huge role in themepark MMO's as far as leveling concerns.
The design we have seen in 90% of the MMORPG's of the past 7 years, in case you've grown out of touch with the MMO genre. If you don't like that design, then good luck with your quest for an MMO that isn't themepark based, but you're clearly Don Quichoting and fighting against windmills if you're unwilling to accept or recognise the core gameplay mechanics of 90% of the current MMORPG's on the market.
To me it sounds like yet another person who is actually ranting about the whole themepark design that has successfully dominated the MMO market since WoW, only has chosen SWTOR as the scapegoat for continuation of that design school.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Why not promote more options rather than one view? Same reply to the original question? I'd like to see more sandbox designs myself, better graphics etc.., but I'm not going to sacrifice one option to have the other. ( not that TOR's graphics are a result of VO, that was a decision made based on a wider pool pf players.).

From which planet did you get your console? Because the ones they sell on planet Earth are years behind PC technology-wise. Try a computer that can run an OS more advanced than MS-DOS and perhaps you'll see the difference.
