Not going to browse this whole topic, because it seems a waste of time to me and I'm sure SW:ToR has plenty of defenders without me stepping in on a point by point basis.
Lightsabers acting like nerf bats is just one of the many ways video games sacrifice adherence to reality for improved gameplay. I get that. Everybody should get that. That's what games do.
I just hope nobody in this topic is defending SW:ToR lightsabers while also sneaking over to the GW2 forums and bitching about people swimming faster underwater. If you're going to pick a stance, at least be consistent about it.

Interesting observation, I agree, as how the hell fun would it be, if everyone was moving around at a snails pace?

It's not so much about realism as just not looking completely stupid.
It looks just as stupid as swinging a two handed bastard sword and not knocking someone on their ass. This has been common place in every MMO to date. All of a sudden, it's not okay, and looks stupid because TOR has done it as well?
I guess it was stupid in DAOC that a kilt wearing highlander could come running at you hit you full swing with a two handed axe and you just stood there like nothing happened? Or was that also in the name of game balance as well as making use of dice rolls instead of physics?
How can you compare a lightsaber to a two handed axe? Have you ever even seen a Star Wars movie?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Its posts/people like the OP that is going to make me stay far away from this title regardless of how good it is. I like starwars but as a gamer I realize things arent always going to be perfect. However with an IP like this I get the feeling the community, thus the chat channels and forums are going to be overfilled with crazed nuts who cant seem to grasp the idea of games have to make changes for things to work. Every little detail in this game is going to go through the crazynutfan machine and I really do not want to deal with that lol.

How can you compare a lightsaber to a two handed axe? Have you ever even seen a Star Wars movie?
Was this a serious question?
To a degree I would imagine it is a serious question. Two handed bladed weapons are of course powerful, but a lightsaber (according to the movies) can cut through almost anything with ease and the few things we've seen it not cut through with ease it has still cut through (Phantom Menace comes to mind). A two handed sword or axe could hack away for hours at a cannon for instance and do little to know damage aside from cosmetic.

I actually talked about how a Two-handed weapon performed (knocked on ass), rather than attempt to make a comparison about sharpness or killing power. The point is these things have been common place in MMO development. They've always been unrealistic in how weapons perform. What makes Star Wars so important ( not even real), when what is real isn't even important?

I'm not suggesting the lightsaber issue should be a problem from MMO players, but if you read my previous post I explain very well why visually it does make people take pause. This is not something unique to SWTOR, but has been around at least since the first Jedi Knight game and a common complaint with all Star Wars games, when not one in most fantasy games. It is what it is, any company taking on a Star Wars game needs to be aware of it and find a solution that makes the right compromise, but even then they should expect the occasional whine from SW fans.

I think there was a war... In space... With stars.
Also something about a republic, that's like real old, it had knights i think.
The fundamental issue with all this is that Lightsabers are very very very ICONIC in not just look, but also sound and expectations.
One cannot simply compare a light saber to any other generic sci-fi weapon as it doesnt carry the same weight.
Therefore, seeing lightsabers being used the way they are in SWTOR really just goes against that ICONism that the light sabers are known for.
Bioware did take the easy and generic rout with their combat design. Really there is no jedi or sith... just characters replicating the same generic mmorpg behavior with a franchise tacked onto it.

This is what I was asking earlier, what makes Star Wars so special? A knights sword and shield is just as iconic as a jedi and his/her Saber. If not more so considering the age of tales of Knights and scorcery.

No, I wouldnt say a Knight's sword and shield are equally iconic. Iconic usually means its unique, individual. The knight sword and shield is generic. If there was an over saturatation of light sabers in multiple franchises and was not as era defining like the star wars movie franchise, then it would be the same, but its not. Light Saber = Star Wars, it is a cultural icon in addition to the franchise.
A sword and shield can = anything, and not a cultural icon...just something that can exist within any theme and setting.
The more iconic something is, the easier it is to alienate the viewer. In a way, big franchises are double edged swords... it has mass appeal because its specific and known specifically, but its also easier to mess up and there is less room for changes. Thats kind of what we see here with the choice to use the Star Wars franchise.
You know...to be honest this argument could be applied to just about any MMORPG (and most RPGs) for that matter.
Lightsabers are lethal and logically should kill very quickly.
You know what else is lethal?
Swords, axes, bullets, blaster bolts, arrows, magic fireballs, explosions, grenades...I could go on
And yet all of these things seem to just cause minor scratches that may eventually build up and kill somoene...but not for a long time.
It's seriously just the way nearly all RPG systems work. Sure it's possible to have a system where everything is deadly, but then it's going to be like a Rainbow Six shooter kind of game where one or two blaster shots kills you.
This environment may seem like it would be better for Jedis, after all you can deflect blaster bolts right? Yeah, well what about from a repeating blaster that fires like a machine gun, can you deflect 30 blaster bolts a second? Don't think so...
In a game like this with "realistic" damage, the advantage typically goes to the person with the best ranged capability. It would be tough for a jedi to close in on a guy with a repeating blaster gun across an open field, he would get mowed down.
It's like comparing getting run over by a car, with getting run over by a freight train. Either way, you could argue that they'll do massive damage, and in a game, it might make sense to gloss over it. Ok, sure, but the difference is, it's at least plausible that one might be relatively ok after getting run over by car. Might not be the norm, but given the right variables, it is possible - and thus, plausible. The way lightsabers are portrayed in the lore, much like getting run over by a freight train, you will be instantly dismembered, at best. The idea is that no one, no matter how tough, or how well armored, from what we've seen, will be shrugging that off. At all. Ever.
I'd understand if this were an insurmountable issue, but it's just a matter of tailoring the animations to accomodate it. Might still be unlikely that anyone but another jedi could evade a lightsaber quite so much, but it'd at least be plausible. Might not be a perfect solution, but they could at least try.
Instead, they're just making it look and feel like any other MMO melee combat, and then, what's the point of even using the IP if they're going to go doing that with something so iconic.

That's what I'm saying. They should have worked on the combat system to give lightsabers AND jedi the right feel.
In the video the jedi regularly leaps way ahead to attack enemies at PB range. Blizzard did a nice job of giving warriors Charge in WoW, it helped a strictly melee class deal with ranged attackers. It brought a new mechanic to the MMO genre. But for a jedi? It doesn't make sense and it's lazy design.
The movies gave the impression that jedi were very reserved and didn't always fight the same fights as everyone else. They could lead and assist but they would also leave a battle to personally deal with the dark side of the force(Vader, the emporer, Darth Maul, Count Dooku, Anakin). That could have been one way to keep jedi players on a mostly divergent path from everyone else in a very quest-based game.

I think the root of the whole problem is that we feel like Jedi should be "special" based on what the movies have taught us. They are basically "above" non force users in terms of power, wisdom, focus, etc.
However...in an MMORPG where any player can choose to be a Jedi, they aren't going to be special. Jedi will be as run of the mill as a warrior or mage in WoW. So we can't really expect them to get any special treatment like going off to fight the real big bad while everyone else takes care of his lackeys.

This goes back to the whole point I made in my first post on this topic. Seeing how Jedi are portrayed in SWTOR, I can see why (right or wrong) the devs of SWG chose to not make them part of the standard game. Not going to work for Bioware and their history of SW games and when they chose to set the game, but I can see why one would make that choice if it was an option.
Also as I said, this is an argument that has plauged SW games since I remember there being an internet and an SW game to play. Some people will always find this odd, even when it should seem odd about the blasters or about a sword in a fantasy game, but because these seem more mundane and don't hold quiet the mythical prowess as the lightsaber it doesn't seem like a glaring problem.
Now the flip side is of course people have also been able to overlook this problem since there have been SW games to play. So it really shouldn't be an issue and while I have reasons not to play SWTOR, this wouldn't even rank on my personal list of problems.

Now the flip side is of course people have also been able to overlook this problem since there have been SW games to play. So it really shouldn't be an issue and while I have reasons not to play SWTOR, this wouldn't even rank on my personal list of problems.
