First, most people like the sylvari. And second, this website is a total sausage fest.
You're a very slow learner, it seems, I knew that going into the site. =P The classic MMORPG stereotype is a big dude with a neck-beard. Look at any convention, I mean, seriously.
Can't say I like the Sylvari at all. It's taking the fruityness of elves and bumping it up to 1000%. Can't wait for the game, though, so I can set them all on fire.
------------------------ Everyone on this site: 1: MMORPGs are DOOMED, and I have the answers to save them! 2: THIS game's gonna kill WoW! 3: I wish things would go back to the Golden Age of MMORPGs, which only existed in my mind...
What can I say? They're freaking plants. They remind me of the broccoli people from the Powerpuff Girls.
The races of Guild Wars 2 have been my only issue with the game so far. What if I don't want to play a race bound to a weird gimmick? What if I don't talk to plants, shapeshift or walk around in a giant robot? I guess I prefer for the class to be the whole package as far as odd abilities go. It's hard enough to find a class I like. Race gimmicks make creating a character twice as hard.

Huh? Racial abilities were said to not be as strong as class abilities and only for flavor.
You don't have to shapeshift as a Norn or use golems as an Asura, those are merely options that are there if you want them.

But are there advantages if you do use the racial abilities? Will people complain about you in PvP if you don't?
Ugly males? And here I thought they were quite attractive. Actually, I like them more than most of the female Sylvari we were shown and I'm seriously considering making one of the two female Sylvari characters I had planned male instead. The armor isn't exactly my cup of tea, so I guess I'll just pick something available to all races. Overall reaction to the Sylvari redesign - favorable.
I think it is interesting that as a female you find the males more appealing than the female characters, image wise.
Well, in the end it really also depends on the character customization. Maybe it was just the Sylvari we were shown in the blog posts. I find both the female and male Sylvari appealing, but where I liked all male examples given, I disliked a few of the female ones. I still think Whint is absolutely gorgeous.

It shouldn't be the case. That's the whole point of Arenanet making the racial abilities weaker than their counterparts from the professions.
I'm excited for the sheer variety and the fact that certain people that like to play as the "beautiful, mysterious" races will have something to draw them into the game. I'm also loving the redesigns, but like I've said, Slyvari are the last race I'd probably play. The jury's still out on that, however, until I see the Asura in combat.
I thought the race was rather underwhelming. They just look humanoid with some random plant-like coverings tacked on, and there's very little alien or exotic about their design. And since they're just going to end up covered in armor anyways, what is the point? As for their background story, it sounds well written, but the whole "plant people" trope has been done a million times over in RPGs. I mean, at least druids had some unique transformation powers, all I see here here is wooden bones and leafy skin. Big frigging whoop.
I wanted something with a little more personality, I guess. Not just green skinned elves.

I agree about Whint though I would personally I would like to see a male equivalent of Caithe, also I must say that Caithe's armor is the only Sylvari racial armor that I like... no love ^_^:
Because flying a Minmatar ship is like going down a flight of stairs on an office chair while firing an Uzi.

Hmm, I'd also love to see a male equivalent of Caithe. Now that I look at her, her features remind me a little bit of one (male) singer that I really like. xD

Ditto, for me Caithe reminds me of Miyavi.

I like the fact that they adapted gear in fuction of the race. This is very awesome and will appeal to many.
End-game gear in a sylvari would look kick-ass, no doubt!
Anyway, some people are more charr and some are more sylvari, I think it's a huge contrast between the two so it will please different type of people.
Norn might appeal to barbarians of AOC and some trolls of wow maybe, to some dwarfs possibly also. Sylvari to elfs, Charr to Taurens type (moo moo), Asura to gnomes or other small races in other games like DAOC maybe?
They look like a more modern-graphics update to the Sylvans from DAOC. They could have at LEAST mentioned DAOC's version. They literally made the name "Sylvari" because "Sylvan" had already been done (italian for "of the forest" or something similar).
Obvious inspiration/copy is obvious unfortunately . With that said, it's still a much needed graphical overhall.

Haha, I didn't have Miyavi in mind, but now that you mention it...
I'm positive about them now, while with the previous design they weren't even on my radar.
To tell the truth though, they look far beter than the other races showed so far, the attention to detail is much greater, and their skin doesn't look like plastic like the human and norn skin does, especially the faces.
I normally always roll a human race in any game, but the graphics of the human/norn races in GW2 are really poor compared to these redesigned sylvari. So unless the other races also get a bit of a polish, GW2 might be the first game where I roll a non-human main character.
As for the poll, the result isn't suprising at all
Well, I'm male and I have a generally unfavorable view of them.
Given the parameters that the designers gave they still look like people with plant parts grafted on them. For the most part.
I'm not saying they should have gone farter but they still felt the need to put mammaries on the females. I fully understand that for most people, going farther and farther away from an "human" form might cause disinterest but I still look at them and think "person in costume".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I like everything but the male model design and clothing; I was kind of hoping they would balance the appeal of the females with the males like the original models. However they now look like every other MMO with appealing females and ugly males. Hopefully they will show more options as I had intended to play a Sylvari male, but if I can't find a option I like I will have to downgrade my "buy asap" to "no thanks" (yes something this subjective matters that much to me, it is a game after all and I play it for my enjoyment.)
However I really enjoyed the lore and everything else released on the race and I do think that overall (yes males included) the design is an improvement over the original. Now they do look more plant like and not like elves with twigs in their hair. So I give Arena Net a thumbs up for what they have accomplished with the Sylvari.
Just because they didn't show males you find appealing doesn't mean you won't be able to create them. They'll be showing off the customization engine in the upcoming conventions, hopefully someone will make a point of cycling through randomly generated faces for each race.

I like the new models, but I'm not a fan of the sylvari environments, but then again, I'm not a fan of the whole water color design of the game, even though some places look pretty cool, like the human capitol city.

I just threw up a little in my mouth
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
Their armors look incredibly nice, makes up for everything else.

As a future Elementalist player I'm very much looking forward to many easily flammable opponents in PvP

It's much worse than I expected as well.
I like it, its very creative.
Am i the only one sick of Elfs?

They got sylvari, but no dwarves, what will they scratch next, humans?
No dwarves = no deal
