If a game really should grasp you , like most of Bioware's games do for me, Dragon Age, Mass Effect etc they will have to be brilliant and live in a symbiousis with all gameplay features.
It has to match the arena the adventures take place on, and in this case it doesnt look alright when at first we have great voice acting but as soon as a characther starts to wonder around in the world the game looks like a very simple MMO, or how we are used to MMO's look for the last couple of years now. The only thing we are not really used to is that NPC's actually will try to talk with you in this one.
I mean combining the voice acting brilliance with standard MMO features maybe wasn't the best of the ideas after all.
Im some ways I feel the same about the MMO Rift, It was a brilliant idea with Rift and all, but the combat in Rift shoul NOT have been the standard MMO fair, It doesnt suit the game world with that type of combat, It doesnt match the action you are presented with, It gives you a false impression. It would have been much better with an action themed combat like Tabula Rasa for instance.
And..I think he "naturally" overreacted a bit..but many of those things he said I thought aswell..It has made me likewise worried !

I can see how a person who hasn't been following the game as we all have would be slightly dissapointed with how it has all turned out . When you look at the names involved and you see the trailers, its actually extremely hard not to get your hopes up especially when you don't spend time roaming forums.
Bioware + Star Wars, look at what Bioware has made before... its really hard not to expect something to blow you out of the water from day one and it seems that this is something Kotaku is a victim of and you can't really blame them for being dissapointed. The hype is "revolutionary MMO incoming".
Normally i take reviews with a grain of salt, but this website isn't known for liking swtor. here is the first comment
Another Kotaku post bashing SWTOR. I don't think there has been a single positive post made about SWTOR on Kotaku. We get it Kotaku writers, you aren't avid MMO players.
Not my words obviously. Still you get reviewers, not everyone will like the game but kotaku isn't know for liking this game. for whatever their reasons. Not their first article bashing the game.
Why is it every single one of these negative articles is written by a NON MMO player? On top of that why do MMo gamers read them then repost them on an MMO oriented forum? How does such a view have any relevance to an MMO fan?
How do you know hes not an mmo player?Because he didn't enjoy swtor?
Because the guy talks about MMO players as people outside is usualy group. Then he goes on and bashes everything in the game that pertains to every MMO out there. Its like a person who loves MMO's thens reviews an FPS and bashes it for being like otehr FPS's and not like MMO's. Pretty stupid article in my opinion.
With that said I'm not against bad reviews about SWTOR. I played it and I see some good and some bad and if I wrote a review it would probably be not the greatest review. But I definfitely wouldn;t punish a game just becuase it has some features that are "normal" for a game ion its own genre.

I think he refers to the fact that it looks weird seeing a jedi standing in the back of the room with a lightsaber just throwing heals like an idiot. I think that's what he means with the game not being in symbiose with it's gameplay.

Excuse me but Dragon Age and TOR isn't very similar at all part from the Voice acting and dialougues, scrape away all the voices and SW:TOR is a standard MMO .
The engines for DA, ME 1-2 and the KOTOR games is more in symbiosis with all it's elements, the characthers fits the scenery better IMO.( Note I havent played SWTOR at all so I may be wrong), but from all the videos and screens I have seen It looks "bland" when not in a dialouge, the walking around, the animations when doing so, the rather stale combat.
IMO they should have used another way of doing combat, remember that all these previous Bioware games where PAUSABLE strategic singleplayer group games, naturally that woudnt work in an MMO setting, but thats also why they should have chosen another combat .
In DA for example, you had a multitude of options available to you , because you where controlling several characthers at once, in SWTOR you will control ONE characther unless you take on "henchmen" but since you can't paus the game, what control over those will you have ?
I can be all wrong, sure..Let's hope I am, because as most everyone else I will be playing this game in hope I will enjoy it

To me does TOR actually seems closer to Biowares "Neverwinter nights" than a MMO besides the holy triad and a few MMO things like raids added to it.
The whole idea that you get a certain quest if you behave a certain way is really nothing we seen much of in MMOs before.
It will be interesting to see if it works or if it will feel like a single player game (in that case I might play it for the month included in the box but will probably quit after that).
To me it seems like the henchmens have a lot to do with the story and I heard that at times you must bring a certain for a mission, group or solo.

There are quests that you get FROM your companions based on the amount and type of interaction you have with them. I think that might be what you mean. You can also use a henchmen to fill a team mate space if you can't find that third or fourth player, but you will suffer from a more difficult gameplay since the comuter AI will not be as good as most players (though they may be better than some people I have teamed with in the past).

If it's about the pausing and controlling other characters then I agree, but the gameplay of your own character is very similar. Personally I dont even want to see a mmorpg where I control a squad of people, I like concentrating on one character at a time. As far as I know you can tinker with the henchmen AI like in DA, which is always nice.

I think that for a lot of people, this is exactly how it's going to feel. It seems like BW is trying to satisfy both the people that wanted KOTOR3 and the MMORPG crowd with one game. Personally, I think the KOTOR3 portion of the game will be on point and fun, but I think the MMORPG part will be lacking/old-hat, so I'm mainly going to play this game for the single player.
The only thing that irks me is that now I have to pay a subscription fee for KOTOR3. Then again, I pretty much played WoW single player as well, so I can't fault BW for making a lot of single player content in an MMORPG.
The blockade was certainly interesting for those living on Naboo. And it was the catalyst for far reaching change throughout the galaxy... So if TOR is THAT interesting, count me in!
Everyone likes different things really. If someone doesn't like TOR [after playing it] then no ammount of listing features and people saying how awesome it is won't change a thing for that person.
If i play swtor and i find that i don't like it or that it is way too similar to wow for me or anything that puts me away from the game there will be no strength in this world that will brainwash me that game is fun and i just don't know how to enjoy it.
To each their own and i think people generally should get less into "my game is better than yours" because it's infantile and doesn't do any good and isn't true at all.
The problem with articles like this one, whether they be positive or negative, is that they often bias the reader. A player who reads a preview/review of a game before seeing it for themselves will likely view said game through the eyes of the previewer/reviewer and not his own. Unfortunately, this is because most people can't or don't want to think for themselves. I personally like to see or play a game for myself before I pass judgment.
Having said that, I think Plunkett's article will have very little influence on readers as most of the gaming community have probably already formed their opinions on SWTOR. Readers of this article will either have their opinions validated or be repelled by it.
Any bit of information seeking says otherwise, how many people actually fall for marketing speak? Especially someone who has access to inside industry information? WHen they say revolutionize what do you think they're saying? That their MMO mechanics are all new to the industry? You know they're not saying that, what they are saying is the story element will change the questing experience and really nothing more.
To someone familiar to MMO's the game is what one has come to expect from the themepark sub-genre, aside from an added element of story injected into your leveling experience.
I think that'd be very true, except that if you look at the other big upcoming MMOs, it's like we're finally hitting "3rd gen" in this genre. In a way, WoW marked the start of the second generation, and a lot of other MMOs followed suit. That's been the way of it ever since, but look at every other AAA MMO coming out in 2012, and it appears they're finally trying things differently, and each in their own way.
Except TOR. They seem to have missed the memo, and are still very much 2nd gen. Like Rift, very polished, but this is why they're taking even more heat for it than previous MMOs, and the reason there's a good chance they'll be left behind for it.
Course, maybe when all the hype clears, they'll all turn out to be WoW clones after all, instead of just TOR. That's not how its looking to me, but we'll see...
I actually agree, there's a lot about TOR I wish would have been done differently. I've never really been into themepark MMO's especially the WOW model for two reasons, the lifelessness of the worlds and the lifeless nature of their communities. Neither sparks much feeling of a living breathing world to me, which is what I most look for in an MMO.
For some reason I can see TOR actually giving that spark, at least to the world, i can't say much about community at this point. Aside from the guild I'm a part of and the SWG community I loved so much, both will be there which is a definite plus for me.
If some are wondering how I might get that feeling from TOR ( a breathing world)) it's solely in reference to the VO and charatcers Bioware is known for.

A screen cluttered with useless icons? Yeah, not once have I seen that in my beta experience. The screen locations for everything are great and fully customizable and moveable.
Even if this game was not a Star Wars game I would still be excited for its release after playing the beta. It's immersive and a lot of fun. I find myself lost int he story and wanting to see what is going to happen next.
And, of course, this writer hasn't even played the game yet.
Well it isn't a flattering nor very fair review, where many of the reviewer's negative feelings come from his overinflated expectations of what a MMO based around the SW IP should be, combned with a dislike of standard themepark MMO features in general. In his defence he makes this no secret and in fact mentions these issues in his review, as he says that those who enjoy MMO standard fare should like this game, and him judging the game by what he hoped it would be was a bit unfair, but it seems that thirty some odd years of Star Wars fanboism trumps a few brief years of MMO gaming fanboism.

Sometimes I think GW2 is the best thing that couldve happened to ToR. All of these people that are impossible to please can play GW2 and leave the rest of us to our own mmos in peace heh
Hilarious statement. For many reasons.
Impossible to please people will somehow be happy with GW2 and not Swtor? GW2 must be perfection then (hint: Its not). I really deplore this mentality btw. " GOOD! Im glad these people I dont even know wont be playing the mmo Im playing because I love to hate them because they hate the game I play.
This is always the cry of a dying franchise. I heard this sort of stuff spouted out on the Star Trek Online forums at a nearly constant rate. " Get lost then! This game is gonna be great once all the haters are gone! "
Not saying that Swtor is a dying franchise, heck its not even out yet, so lets not start yelling what I call the "battle cry of a dead mmo".

Not saying that Swtor is a dying franchise, heck its not even out yet, so lets not start yelling what I call the "battle cry of a dead mmo". You dont think GW2 is catered toward people that hate traditional mmos? Just look at their manifesto. ToR is a traditional mmo with tried and true mmo systems. So yes, instead of dealing with the groans of the "been there done that" crowd. They can go to GW2 which is promising something different. I dont have any hate for people that are sick of traditional themepark mmos. I enjoy games for what they are, not what I wish they would be. Theres a game for every mood im in and tor fits one of those moods. You may think Im being bitter but that couldnt be further from the truth. Im grateful that GW2 will offer something fresh and new for those that are seeking it. Its a win win for all communities when everyone can find their niche.
i am anxiously awaiting the time when a couple of months after SWTOR has released arrives.
its becoming clearer every day that the hype of this game will not level up to the expectation; and many who now find all sorts of excuses to defend certain bioware decisions will be the same who will be back here stamping their feet in the not so distant future.

I would hope the people who do that sort of thing are the many posters you see around here who act as though the world has come to an end, over the current state of MMO's. I've never cared enough about a bad game to ever come running to the forums screaming about it, I simply move on to whatever was next on my list, hell I never had much to complain about in regard to NGE and I was actually pissed about that, still I moved on to something else.
To SB fans, please stop making our demographic look bad.Stop invading threads that have nothing to do with sandboxes.
Honestly, it doesn't matter how good SWTOR is.....it could be the second coming of 3D gaming, and the people on this site would STILL piss and moan and bash it because they will NEVER be satisfied with anything.
It's too COOL these days to be all EMO and cynical, and bash everything.
Bioware has a winning formula. We all know how good their stories can be, and MMORPGs have been little more than pointless, detached, impersonal grinds for far too long now. Just imagine how much impact a good, mmersive story could have on a modern MMORPG.
Maybe the core combat mechanics are based on traditional MMORPG mechanics (based on info from the web site, and interviews, etc)...but MMORPGs are more than just combat.
i am anxiously awaiting the time when a couple of months after SWTOR has released arrives.
Me neither. Because TOR will be well into its run and SWG will be no more.

Whatever you say buddy. The majority of the people here who are looking forward to this game are not blind fanboys with unrealistic expectations. We all have things we wish could have been in. The difference is we don't act like spoiled children who think the whole rest of the world should be pissed off and boycott the game over it. We just want a fun game to play. If the game isn't fun, then we'll just move on. No big deal.I certainly won't act like some the jaded gamers here who go around from game to game measuring them like a litmus test. I don't know where you get this idea that the majority of us are like that.

"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
I would say it was revolutionally. SWTOR is the first mmo to have full voiceovers and not just grind quests all the time.
Now I actually care about the quest I'm doing, because I will feel fully immersed. Text based quests just don't do it for me anymore.

Wow, that article is so wrong it's funny.

Well....GOOD ones are, anyway.
