WoW getting desperate?

UnleadedRevUnleadedRev Member UncommonPosts: 568

I have been reading on various websites all the recent updates and changes to WoW, the latest being removing the threat issue for Tanks, which I read  on the "TenTonHammer" gaming website. It seems ever since SWTOR went pre-order there has been a flood of updates, content, changes etc etc from WoW. I guess it makes sense to pull out the stops with the sales numbers SWTOR is showing and of course its Star Wars.

I am beginning to feel that even though WoW is fantasy and SWTOR is Sci-Fi, that the old age debate of Fantasy Players not leavign WoW for a Sci-Fi MMO is a mute point.

What do you think?

(IMO) SW:ToR will ultimatley be the last blow for WoW. After that, it's not going to get any better. WoW is dying.

Blizzard could try changing the model to free-to-play but it won't do them much good at all. If Blizzard where wise they would start up a new game and call it WoWII or, even better, World of Starcraft.

I stopped playing WoW and I will definately not play SWTOR. That beeing said: I don't think that anyone having created a game as successful as WoW must ever be desperate about anything. In case of doubt, they just shrug and buy a dozen private jets less that week.

That SWTOR will be successful was never out of doubt. It's star wars. They can create something horribly bland and boring, and people would still buy it if it got a lightsabre painted on it.

And like it or not: SWTOR aims at exactly the same age group as WoW.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Frankly you look at the SWTOR forums and the community is as bad as or worse than WoW already. Anytime you have a big gaming community and give them a place to mouth off the scum will push everyone else out of the forum.

TOR will have all the advatages of being 100% wow clone and all the disadvantages too.

I think that Star Wars IS fantasy "recycled in space." WoW is Fantasy steampunk and ToR is fantasy Scifi, there isn't a HUGE gap between them really.

Guess I'll go ahead and get a refund for my pre-order then. I am not paying $60, and then $15 a month for virtual daycare.

Why do I only remember one patch from a week or two ago... Where have I been for this flood of updates... and content and changes...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

ToR will play like ToR..unless WoW popped Space Ships out of its as into the land of Azeroth in the past two years....btw this is technically possible because the Goblins are that advanced, BUT they are different games that play in the same fashion.

One thing VERY VERY different between SWToR and Rift is Rift is based on two months of hype and SWToR is based on 35 years of hype and people WHO THINK THEY ARE JEDI's. I have learned in life if someone admits to being a Jedi you try not to argue with them and just walk away slowly.

It's not just because of SWTOR that they are feeling pressure.  Right at this moment, there are four MMOs that I'm personally looking forward to seeing -- and SWTOR isn't even one of them.  I don't remember a time when I saw that much hope on the horizon and it's a stark contrast from just a couple of years ago when there was practically nothing on the radar.

WoW is the elder statesmen of MMOs and it's showing its age.  What sets today apart from yesterday is that there are a lot more up-and-comers who look like they may have learned from the many failures of the past and are now ready to give us something new.  I think many WoW players are getting the seven year itch and there are a lot of pretty faces passing them on the street, flashing them smiles.  SWTOR is just one temptation among among many..

    Actually if anything there are going to be MORE kids in TOR than WoW. Kids play WoW because their friends told them about it, kids will play TOR because "ZOMFG ITZ STAR WARZZ!@!!@#$";

Same reason I have an attic full of star wars lego......

In the end WoW could lose 9/10ths of it's playerbase and still have more players than a lot of P2P MMOs.

They'll never be getting deperate because the only thing that can truly K.O. WoW is WoW itself.

Oh they pooped out spaceships during burning crusade but that is besides the point. Besides a few minor details like on rails space combat minigames TOR has the same gameplay as WoW. You will spend the vast majority of your time doing the exact same things as a WoW player except in a different setting.

WOW is not dieing but it is facing some worthy competition

I personally thought WOW cata sucked -- 3rd worst expansion ive ever seen

(after DAOC Trials of Atlantis,  and EQ's Gates of Discord)

WOW's weak expansion also accounts for dissatisfied players

just because their similarities in gameplay etc.. it doesnt mean its a clone.. however... because of this, its likely that the people you encounter in SW;TOR are probably the same ones you meet in WoW.. their both aimed at the same demographic.. Bioware/EA arent daft, they know that the $$ is the WoW demographic, even SOE knew this, which is why they created the NGE in order to try and capture this upcoming market with SWG.. they failed.. but.. Bioware might just succeed where SOE didnt.. im sure that Blizzard are going to be releasing more and more things in the next few months with just this factor in mind.. as for disadvantages.. WoW players come in for a lot of stick, and granted, some of them may be fairly young, but.. for the EU servers at least.. i can honestly say that the players there are no better or worse than in any other game, certainly not the way they are often portrayed on these forums..  so yes.. if you play SW;TOR then you will meet WoW players.. likely quite a hefty proportion of the SW;TOR players will be WoW players.. maybe once people get first hand experience of how WoW players are.. then some of these myths about them will disappear too...image

WoW's real problem is Blizzard. They think that the same thing that worked 5 years ago still works and people are obviously starting to get tired of it. I mean look at their next patch for what it is...A raid and 3 heroics and I think 2 of them are recycled.

Only actual new stuff in the game is Transmogrifier which is 4 years over due and a money sink called Void storage for storing crap and people will still use alts for this because it is cheaper.

  • TaiphozTaiphoz Member UncommonPosts: 353

WoW is indeed dying, and an expansion which is now looming will not help it, blizzard know this, they only ever planned for a total level cap of 100 or 99 and they estimate there are one or two more expansions to come before they stop working on major content.

It's also why their now working on TITAN, and have said in public that they themselves with Titan want to be the game/developer to beat wow inot a pulp and take all its players, now if Blizzard themselves are working on the wow successor they have to admit the threat that upcoming mmo's pose to its dominance.

I would love to say Archeage is the game to kill off the themepark casual crap that wow now is but sadly due to its graphics quality a vast number of people wont be able to run it, SWTOR does not suffer from this as they have opted for the same stylish cartoonesque art style as wow and are thus able to lower system requirements, meaning a lot more people will be able to play.

I in all honesty think and beleieve that wow has held so many players for so long now simply because it does not need a NASA grade computer to run it, while other newer games like RIFT and others have required people to upgrade their hardware.

There is a lot to be said for dumbinb down a games graphics so that it runs on millions more computers than having a higher base system spec and only being able to run on a few hundred thousand.

    ^ this

i myself never actually managed to like WOW, tried at launch lasted the trial, came back after 2 years (pushed in by a guild i was in) didn't get past the trial again, then a rl friend of mine started tryin to convince me in...i lasted 2 days this time, simply WOW is not my game, don't ask me y is more a matter of feeling, 'cause i like the setting (copied from warhammer).

But iicogigen is right, only WOW can kill WOW, and it will most likely happen by slow consumption, 'cause during the past ages there have been dozens of "WOW killer" games..and none actually succeeded, not even the "original" (warhammer)

reasons r many, but mainly have to admit WOW is a stable, polished and most of all "simple" game , and the majority of players like the easy stuff (same reason 'cause companies are winning in their effort to force RMT systems on mmorpg playerbase)

Maybe you can get the Guild Wars 2 fans to understand this because I sure as hell can not. WoW is successful because it is accesible to millions of people.  This is a pretty damn major feature and adding in stuff to allow your game to be played on even the most Ghetto computer is reqired.

WoW will have players for a long time yet but not the huge player base we see today and have seen in the past. I mean we have SWTOR, GW2, ArcheAge, TERA, Diablo 3 (I know it's the same company) and I could go on. Lots of good ones coming that are going to keep tapping those nails into that rather large coffin of WoW. I'm not seeing any negatives in the near future! :D

I've taken a look at Archeage, it is basically promising all the things Horizons did with a bunch of stuff from Darkfall. I'm glad to see that there are still enough nieve youthful people out there that believe a game with that type of feature list is actually possible with modern technology.

agree on many things you say, but not on this, i really hope Archeage won't be the game to kill WOW and clones, 'cause that means it will be a "dumb" mix of themepark/sandbox..and i still have hope (yes not much i admit it) that might be better :)

GW2 runs on graphic cars that are no longer for sale on the market, point moot
