Can you jump in Guild Wars 2? Is every adventure zone everywhere a private instance for you or your group?
In Guild Wars 1, everywhere was a private instance apart from the city hub...... Also, in Guild Wars 1..... I tried to jump over a fence that barely reached my characters knees to run down the hill behind it.... I was absolutely disgusted to the point of uninstallation when I discovered I couldn't jump (In an mmo? I can't jump in an mmo? What.....The.......F**k?)........ When I discovered that I couldn't even walk up or down the gentle sloping hill, I thought about the money I paid for the game and threw up a little.
........ And that's all I have to say about Guild Wars.
thats funny because I played guild wars for about a half hour and had the same thoughts. I loved the graphic detail but couldnt deal with the other flaws so I went back to WoW. I think that is one of the reasons I started getting stoked for GW2 is that you can actually move around freely, no point and click, plus all the other features they are putting into it. I plan on playing for quite some time.

I give up
Yeah... which is why I said earlier that it's best to just wait for the game to come out. At least by then they'll be lots of reviews where critics will give a decent rundown on the major features like "Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG & you can jump" ^_^
After dealing with some friends and some people on the internet who seem to think that GW2
is a Korean MMO, WoW Clone, and not innovative, I decided I'd write this article to kindly get them to shut up and quit having the same arguement over and over again.
Any of you guys getting some problems convincing your friends to play GW2 - or hell, look at information on it?

Ah, nice to know that anyone that disagree's with your view of GW2 is ignorant.
While I do think GW2 will be a decent MMO, I personally am not that interested in playing it.
On a side note, if GW2 is as good as you seem to think it is, why would anyone need to be convinced to play it?
Don't think its the disagreeing that bothered him, was the fact that they seem to disagree with him on false or misinformation alone, instead of actually knowing what they are talking about
He is linking to an article named "Guild Wars 2 Be Interested Not Ignorant" which suggests that if you are not interested in GW2, you are ignorant.
If you waste a few seconds and actually look at the article, you will see he also suggests people are stupid for not wanting to play an MMO.
The OP likes GW2, thats great, people not liking it at all, or to a lesser degree than the OP, does not make them Ignorant, and not wanting to play an MMO does not make people stupid.
This thread and that article might make the OP both though.
Actually, I wonder if you even looked at the article, while I don't like the article, saying stuff like "GW2 is a asian game" is nothing but ignorant and stupid. Not liking the game on because you don't like what it features is OK, not liking the game because of what you think it features its pretty ignorant.
I wonder if you even read the post you replied to?
If I did not look at the article, how would I know the OP suggests people that do not want to play an MMO are stupid?
I could have posted how the OP states that you can dodge in GW2, as though that has never been possible in an MMO before, he also points out that spells and abilties are based on your weapon in the same vein, yet that too has been done before.
I could have mentioned that the OP uses the story in GW2 as a selling point, even though when you use story as a selling point for TOR, a lot of GW2 fanboys like the OP take the piss (wait for posts now calling me a TOR fanboy and GW2 hater).
I could even have pointed out that the OP claims Dynamic Events are like Rifts in Rift, when actually, they are more like the invasions that take place in Rift, not the rifts themselves.
I could have said And MUCH MORE, but what would be the point?
As I said in my first post, GW2 looks like it will be a decent MMO, and that really is all that needs to be said.
A creative person is motivated by the desire to achieve, not the desire to beat others.
I know i have not talked well about gw2 for very good reason, but i will be fair and look at what you are presenting to be a game worthy of someone playing.
First of all,i want to make it clear i am never a fanbois of any game i recently quit my most beloved ffxi because it's design direction has turned south in a horrible way.So i am always fair,if a game deserves my attention i will give it,if not then i might judge it to be stil ladequate or not worthy of anyone's time.I truly am looking /hoping for a great game to come along that i can call my new home.
I am currently playing Eq2,so i need to see what GW2 offers that would warrant me spending more money and starting over in a new game.BTW Eq2 is still a great looking game,i can't come even close to utilizing it's full graphic abilites without lagging my system, even on lowish settings ,it looks great.
8 classes,ok that is a fair enough start, but eq2 offers me many more, and FFXI had around 20 all very different, unlike EEQ2 which tends to overlap many classes.
5 races, well this is barely adequate, most games offer this or more,FFXI matched it for an aged console game and EQ2 easily wins out again.
New combat system is a stretch in a huge way, dodging is new yes and i do agree i like that part alot. There is a problem with dodging in PVE however,it is totally dependent on the mobs AI,nothing you do matters at all, dodging is really a PVP thing.I don't do pvp in rpg's so it is a non factor to myself.but it definitel;y is a great idea for those who pvp.
Personal story....I can't stress enough this is SUPPOSE to be a MMO,not a single player game with your own personal story. This is actually a contradiction to the rest of the games design,it is suppose to be a revolving world based on everyone's actions, not just your own.Is it something that turns me off?Nope not really, but it also does not give a mmo any merit, worth saying "play me".
Last thing you mention is sidekick system....It is not a bad idea, but without knowing all the speicfics, like is it item mall based or just an auto npc?I preferred the FFXI system of having a npc fellow, this system allowed you do do npc specific quests and level him up like a real player.Either way there is not a huge difference here.
There is actually a LOT more to talk about in GW2,the topic would be far too lengthy to discuss everything,so based on the reasons mentioned by the OP,there is nothing really offered here by GW2 to warrant buying a new game.IMO it really is just same old with a new skin,i bought anything that came out when i was young and hyper, but now i prefer a "reason" outside of just being NEW.

It's important to remember that GW2 is buy to play, so it's very easy to enjoy another, subscription based, mmo right alongside of it. Especially while you wait for your subscription game to release more content. Again, one of ArenaNet's statements is that they expect gamers to play multiple games, but usually not want to pay multiple subs.
8 classes,ok that is a fair enough start, but eq2 offers me many more, and FFXI had around 20 all very different, unlike EEQ2 which tends to overlap many classes.
8 Classes is at launch that drastically changed based on your environment, weapon choice and group dynamic. Plus, I might add, that in EQ while there are many different classes, many of their playstyles are virtually identical and could easily be another 'spec' of another class.
5 races, well this is barely adequate, most games offer this or more,FFXI matched it for an aged console game and EQ2 easily wins out again.
I would say the same thing about races as classes. Many of EQ's races simply look almost exactly the same except some are taller, shorter, heaftier and have different skin paints. (Little frog dudes rock though!)
EQ combat is the traditional combat style. I have not played GW2 so I can't really comment on which is more fun at this point.
Actually, personal story is an extension of the player housing that EQ does so well. Every player has to carve their own place in the world, and GW2 is going to facilitate that. It's not a single player game but we all have an identity that we live out in our game world. Both games allow for this, so IMHO both games do this well, but GW2 is building and expanding on what EQ did.
I don't know much about the sidekick system yet, so again I can't comment much on this point.

To say that GW2 isn't offering much different is, sorry to say, you really have to be ignoring certain key aspects on purpose. The quest and dynamic event system, the solution for the pure vs. hybrid debate that this game offers, the business model (no sub fees), the fresh approach to PvP...on and on and on.
I really think some folks here have taken the article a bit too seriously. It really isn't meant to give an entire in depth look at Guild Wars 2, it isn't meant to be a "new and exciting preview!" either. It was meant to briefly highlight some features the game has and go, "Hey, why aren't you guys interested in this game, when you're willing to shell out 60 bucks to pay for a game that offers less when GW2 offers X Y and Z?"
I used Diablo 3 simply as a comparison. Let's say on release they're both the same price wise. Which offers more content? Gw2 - without a doubt. Not saying D3 will be a bad game, but not as long. However, because Gw2 has the term "MMORPG" as what type of game it is, many players think "Time commitment, raid or die, grind grind" ect, instead of "Huge open world rpg with lots of neat little elements"
I apologize if I don't come off as a proffessional writer, and if I upset someone for calling them stupid.

I had a friend that refused to give GW2 a chance; said it was just like WoW and SWToR would be the greatest MMO to kill WoW, innovate the industry, and have no cash shop or monthly fee. You can see he was an ignorant son of a bitch before i stood behind him with a menacing glare and ordered him to educate himself. You can't go light on ignorance of that magnitude. Stopped hanging out with him after that because he’s one of the people you just cannot educate.
Wait, you stopped hanging out with a friend because you couldn't make him like GW2?

I think it had more to do with the fact that his friend was making outrageous claims and refused to even look up if he was correct. I wouldn't want to be friends with someone like that either.

I think you're looking at it from the wrong direction here. I haven't played EQ, but I can give you an example with Lineage 2, where you have 35 different classes. If I were to separate them by role I will get 4 major roles: Healer, Buffer, Tank and DPS. If I were to separate them by Archetypes (some classes are hybrids, though) I'll get 9 of those: Healer (2 classes), Buffer (6 classes go here), Tank (4 classes), Spelcaster DPS (3 classes), Melee DPS (6 classes), Rogue-archetype DPS (3 classes), Archer archetype (4 classes) Summoner DPS (4 classes) Crafter (2 classes). Lineage 2 is a game that is about specialization and set-in-stone roles. Arenanet prefers a softer approach. You get almost the same options, but you're just not locked to only one. You want to play a rogue-like character with daggers? Go and roll a thief. You want to play as a rogue, but using a bow instead? Well you're free to do that as well as a thief. You want to play an archer archetype with nature affinity? Well then ranger is the choice for you. You want to have pet companions? Go either as a Ranger, or Necromancer if you don't mind them being undead. What I'm getting at is that those classes are still there, but they are just hidded behind a broader name.
5 races, well this is barely adequate, most games offer this or more,FFXI matched it for an aged console game and EQ2 easily wins out again.
Yeah, some games offer more playable races. However, a good question to answer is how many of them are really unique (both in looks and lore). Also adding new races seems like a good direction for expansions, imo. I know for a fact that many people would like to play as the Tengu (a bird-like species, who are in GW1/2) or like the Kodan (huge polar bear monk warrior-like race). We'll see where Arenanet will go from here on.
I wouldn't underestimate the AI, really. Arenanet have yet to work on it (as said in a recent interview), but if it comes anywhere close to the AI of the henchmen/mobs in GW1 I'll be a happy camper. The AI in GW1 is the best I've personally seen in an MMO-like game. Actually, many of the players will tell you that the AI companions(henchmen/heroes) are even better than real people and also I know for a fact that a lot of people gave up on the game, because some areas were too hard. So I believe that the dodge will be a pretty important mechanic in PvE as well.
Actually the personal story seems like a cool option for those that like those kinds of things. I don't think it's that big of a part of the game (taking into consideration the fact that you can't reach lvl 80 by your personal story alone) and that it's completely optional. So if you prefer, you can skip it completely after the tutorial.
The sidekick system doesn't involve item malls or NPCs. The moment you go to a lower level area, you're automatically scaled down to an appropriate level for the area. You can be scaled up if you form a group with a player higher level then you. That's pretty much how it works.

I admit, I didn't bother to read the article, but having read the opinions of some of the people here, who I know for a fact have a deep understanding of the game mechanics, the article doesn't seem to do GW2 justice. If I were you I'd wait for open beta, before making my final decision. And as someone else said the game is B2P anyway, so even if you don't get everything you're looking for, I believe it will be well worth the 50-60$ purchase for what it offers.

Nope. I'm not having an ounce of trouble with this, as I could care less if anyone else likes it or not. Personally, I'm stoked for GW2, but don't have the patience and/or tolerance to deal with selling my friends (or anyone else) on a game, an idea, or even a TV show. People are gonna bash it to hell and back...I don't care. The same people and/or types of people are gonna bash all the other MMO's coming out in the next couple of years. Again, I don't give a fraction of a f--k. If you try to write an article like this, to win them over, you've already lost the battle. One of the members, on here, has a profile quote that says: A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. That's SO true.
If your friends are anything like mine, they'll notice you're wrapped up in GW2 most of the time, then they'll notice some of their other friends doing the same thing, and after the game has been out 6 months to a year, they'll be asking to borrow it. OR the game could dive-bomb miserably and it'll all have been for...what? Yes...even though I eat and drink the hype about this game, it could ultimately suck (or just be mediocre) and I'm mentally prepared for that. If that happens, it happens...plenty of other titles out there.
*Edit- I also wanted to add that just because I don't give a crap what someone thinks, it doesn't mean that I think they're ignorant. Some people like chocolate...some like peanut butter...some like both in the same bite...it's all good. So please, think about what I just said, don't give a crap about what I think, and you'll feel all warm and fuzzy too!
The more of these types of debates I see, the more aparent it becomes that trying to explain GW2 to people is a bit like trying to explain to someone why chess is different than checkers. Sure the boards may look similar, but anyone who still doesn't really get it after a brief explanation is either;
A) never going to.
or
needs hands-on experience to truly understand something.
I think there is more than enough information out there to show what makes this game stand apart from the rest. There are even quite a few reviews / previews floating around that explain this in great detail (even by some people who never expected to like the game in the first place).
If someone hasn't seen this, then simply direct them to some links. If they've seen the info and still don't get it, then the game is probably not for them, and you'd have better luck teaching a WoW kiddie proper grammar.

I dont think it really has anything to do with explaining GW2 to people who dont get it. Like you said, the info is out there and anyone can take the time to read and see what this game is about. I think where things get annoying is when people try to convince others to like GW2 as much as they do. And when those people refuse to get as excited as them, they chalk it up to "they simply do not understand what this game is about". Well Im here to tell you that, yes, we do understand and no, we arent going to all be on the GW2 bandwagon as much as you wish we were. Get over it. Move on. Enjoy your game. Stop badgering the poor folks that are indifferent or not interested. Lets get back to talking about the games themselves, not the people who like or dislike them.
I dont think it really has anything to do with explaining GW2 to people who dont get it.
The fact that we get posts like the following multiple times a week tells a completely different story than what you are saying here. The fact that people are asking stuff like this a year after the first Gamescom demo proves there is a lot of misinformation and lack of knowledge concerning GW2 out there! (I am not intentionally trying to offend the person that wrote this just using it as an example)
And no I am not saying that the article is the best way to show someone the game that does not know about it. In fact I have not read it and I most likely will never read it because there already are tons of options out there to show someone facts about the game.
Although I will end 2ith this I think your post is funny I have been told many times that GW2 is nothing special by people on this site. Then when I respond and ask for proof from them not one ever response, but apparently it is the fans fault for being overzealous why this people come onto the GW2 forum. That they are the innocent live and let live and they would not be here without us. HAHA that is the greatest joke I have heard today, keep it up!

The problem is also that people like different things.
Some of us like PC games others have a PS3. Some people will prefer TOR to GW2 and there is nothing wrong with that. We are all different people and that is not something bad, how fun would the world be if everyone dressed the same and liked the same things? I think only people like Mao and Pol Pot would like that.
It is a different thing to assume the game will suck just because Blizzard didn't make it or something.
Even the biggest fans of us needs some hands on experience to truly know how good a game is anyways, don't stuff too much information down peoples throats but let the game speak for itself instead.'
Bring some friends and some computers to your place for the free weekend before launch instead, that will actually prove your point more than any vids or talk about features.

Even if they DO have different servers battling each other - it's basically just WoW BGs...except at least in WoW you have more than 1 faction..it's therefore, slightly less vanilla bland. GW2 has some nice concepts for sure - but it's still the same races and classes beating each other up in an instance, and put any sign you want on any mmo - but if it's instanced BGs with 2 or less factions - it's same old same old.
Personally waiting for a 3 faction mmorpg like Secret World. The two faction, or even lazier no faction model has just been done into the ground to save developers imagination and time. Just too old to be treated like a child by the industry - actually expecting more these days...after all, if an old aged game like Dark Age of Camelot can have 3 factions, 20 races, 44 classes each with distinctly different abilties, then I think these new CGI wondergames can have a few things too.
/my 2 cents - hopefully the more folks that start to expect more, the more developers will LEAVE THE WOW MODEL BEHIND and become creative. Dare I dream?

Wow, I didn't know that you could have several hundred players in a Wow battleground and that guilds actually could hold fortifications and such...
Don't confuse the mists with battlegrounds, GW2 actually have both of those.
As for the races, only humans appear in other MMOs even though we could have a discussion how original GW2s or any fantasy race for that matter is.
But TSW is not really that original either, to me it sounds like a MMO adaption of "Delta green" with some added secret societies and a little more conspiracy theories.

Ummm, you realize these are in fact 3 way battles between servers right? And you might want to reconsider using WoW as your example of different factions seeing as how they allowed every race to make any class now. Also from the looks of it TSW has 3 factions that also have all the same skill options reguardless of faction, as well as the same type of 3 way PvP that GW2 has (though so far nothing to indicate that it will be as large in scope with hundreds of players on the same map as GW2. Would like to be wrong about this though). Dont get me wrong. Im looking forward to TSW too, but i will also be playing GW2 as my main mmo. As long as funcom doesnt screw up TSW, ill be all over it as well.
The sad thing is that you actually believe that. Cant you see how hard you guys are getting trolled by these types of people? You really think people just naively stumble into the GW2 forums and start spouting off misinformation? You think they are really looking to have their ignorant claims corrected by you? No. They are trolling. Very successfully I might add. Stop feeding them. They will go away. But if you keep taking the bait and going on tirades about how they dont know what theyre talking about, theyre gonna keep coming out of the woodwork.

I agree, it's very likely the article and the thread were meant to be disinformation and flame/troll bait.
The article is not something I would ever show a friend. It's inaccurate, has a horrible tone and completely fails at it's stated purpose.

god damnit..................
I give up
"I am not a robot. I am a unicorn."
thats funny because I played guild wars for about a half hour and had the same thoughts. I loved the graphic detail but couldnt deal with the other flaws so I went back to WoW. I think that is one of the reasons I started getting stoked for GW2 is that you can actually move around freely, no point and click, plus all the other features they are putting into it. I plan on playing for quite some time.
Yeah... which is why I said earlier that it's best to just wait for the game to come out. At least by then they'll be lots of reviews where critics will give a decent rundown on the major features like "Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG & you can jump" ^_^
@ the op...
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
My responses in green.
No, seriously.
just watch this vid:

And you dont sidekick with NPCs on GW2.
Wait, you stopped hanging out with a friend because you couldn't make him like GW2?

Wait, you stopped hanging out with a friend because you couldn't make him like GW2?
I think it had more to do with the fact that his friend was making outrageous claims and refused to even look up if he was correct. I wouldn't want to be friends with someone like that either.

Maybe he knows that video games are not important and was pushing the guy's buttons just to mess with him. I know I would hehe.
The more of these types of debates I see, the more aparent it becomes that trying to explain GW2 to people is a bit like trying to explain to someone why chess is different than checkers. Sure the boards may look similar, but anyone who still doesn't really get it after a brief explanation is either;

There are few truly original ideas in game lore.
I've gotten past caring if a friend or whoever wants to play or not. I give them the info if they want, they can decide for themselves.
If, after you already explained it, they are still ignorant or just don't want to understand then just nod your head and move to a different topic.
I'll play it and enjoy it. If Joe Bob doesn't, well then hopefully he'll find a game more suited to his taste.
