Most people, me included, agree that more respect needs to be maintained online and the only way for that to happen is for people who are constantly shit talking online to get into shit for doing it. And the ONLY way for that to happen, is if it's mandatory to have your real name and address on forums; you shit talk, you get your ass kicked.

Now, the only problem is when the roles are reversed; the kid was not 13, and was in fact someone with a few knives or guns, but....meh.

    lol

I don't know why there is a correlation between that kind of look and nerds. My brother used to be extremely good at FPS games, hell, a God in my opinion. Then we both hit university and started hitting the gym...a lot. The more "un nerdy" we looked, the less we started playing games. =/

It takes a long time to develop a thick skin when it comes to the internet. There have been a few times where I wanted to go beat someones ass, not becasue I'm a sore loser, but because the other person decides to say something that would get thier ass beat if they weren't safe in their mother's basement. It would be great if no one was allowed the anonimity that the internet gives them but I think of it this way now, anyone who acts that way is doing so because they are pretty much powerless to do so in any other format. That line of thinking and a thicker skin has allowed me to get beyond the feelings of hurt I'd like to deliver.

That and kicking my cat when it happens helps too image

I'm kidding about the kicking of the cat part of course.

I think what is really frightening is the comments that the kid is responsible. How can talking equate to strangling ? He was 13 for god's sake.

One of the great things about the internet is the inherent barriers to getting out of my chair and going to kick someone's ass.  The internet has long been a factor in keeping me out of prison.  I'd like it to stay that way.

SO which one was the thirteen year old? Sad just sad, grown ass man hunting down a thirteen year old? Over a videogame?

Getting your ass kicked, and getting strangled is two very VERY different things. The fact that RealID makes people even more vulerable to retards that this, is the whole idea that RealID doesn't work.

Games are originally designed as an Escapism method, not something you want to potentially expose you to harm.

I rather get trash talk a few times a day, than to have the thought that someone might get pissed for getting kill in a game and come revenge on me.

I know the kid probably have some degree of fault into enraging that guy, but that doesn't mean he deserves to be killed.

Normal society already exposes me to a range of potential harm, bringing in the internet will just makes things 10x times worst. You hear about cases where people kill for WoW and such, imagine having RealID, now they can track down people online.

And to those {mod edit} cheering on the killer, they probably should be charged or at least community service, thats like endosing a murder.

If anything this case shows why real ID should not be implemented. Any crazy arsed psychotic could start harassing you in real life simply because you happened to have killed them in a video game. No sorry, that's a shit idea. If someone is psychotic enough to hunt down your details in real life without them being intitally posted, then that level of insane is not going to be put off by having to provide real idea either.

What this shows is that people should not get momentously butt hurt over playing a game. People act like jerks to one another in games, but lets face reality, plenty of people act like jerks to one another in real life. Having to have your name and address sprawled over the internet is not going to stop that, it only has drawbacks.

Oh and if someone can't deal with the pathetic attempts at harassment a 13 year old tries to throw at them... oh dear.

The instance quoted would actually only have resulted in the same outcome. Posting on the internet a person real name and address is about like painting a target on your back. Every "crazy" that can get it would use and abuse that info. Face, there are "jerks" on the internet. I would NEVER want them to know where I live and I am probably one of the more civil individuals you might meet...on and off the internet.

Some people are just too sensitive, the real world is alot harsher than the internet. if you cant take a bit of smack talk online then you should go hide in a closet for the reminder of your life.

Oh dear, you haven't run into some of the 13 year olds I have.  Lucky you.   Some of the kids (and adults) in these games are a convincing argument for mass sterilization of our species.

Either way there's something to be said about taking things that happen in a videogame to this level. I don't care how much of a douche someone is, be mature enough to just ignore it and move on, that goes for the internet and real life.

The real problem here is ego, thin skin and immaturity (and none of that is about the kid). It's sad a thirteen year old can enrage a grown ass man to this extent, and says far more about the adult than it does the thriteen year old. The thirteen year old was being a THRITEEN year old, as was the adult in this situation.

Talk about living the dream!  :)

How'd he get the kids address?  Was the kid stupid enough to give it to him?

I agree with the OP that people would be much less likely to act like A-holes when playing these games if they were forced out of anonymity.  But alot of people get mad if you're just beating them all the time, no matter how civil you are.  Wouldn't it be great to be the victim of a drive-by shooting for pwning $$$Thvg4lyf$$$ one night?

I'm not saying I approve of going to a 13 year old's house to beat his ass for being mouthy in a game.  I do, however, understand the desire to do so.

    I disagree.

I am tired with all shit-talk going on forums, games and people acting like douchebags just because they can BUT having your real name tied to you everywhere on internet? HELL NO!

Games just need to have more tools to menage that.

FPS have to have REAL dedicated servers again. That anyone can set up and do NOT have to pay for 'official partner bla bla bla server'.  I remember times like that and then you just had to found server with nice rules and people and douchebags and cursing idiots just were kick/ banned by server admins.

Nowadays it is not like that anymore cause real dedicated servers are often impossible / disencoraged cause game companies want to squeeze all possibilities to earn extra penny off everything.

Mmorpg's?   Just stricter server rules + throwing out random / cross server lfg tools.

Nowadays someone has to be racist or cursing real badbly ,etc to have any consequences , rules should be more strict , so if someone is acting like jerk , calling other people noobs, shouting and blaming others, yelling ,etc even if he make sure that he does not use heavy worlds this still should be possible to report and this report shiuld matter.

Nowadays game companies dont give a shit about people beign rude , becasue rude client is still a client. But many douchebags and other 'you're noob, you're fail , learn 4 play fool ,etc' people could be warned , and if they continuoesly are reported for that banned.

Nowadays game publishers don't care and they don't do nothing or like 24 h bans, so people know that if they really don't go overboard they can still act liek douches.

Come down on them and it will be diffrent.

Are gamers such shut in's that they don't realize that name calling goes on in the real world too? Maybe it would be better if we were all robots and expressed ourselves the same way then lil jimmy wouldn't get his feelings hurt, or how about just growing a pair?

    LOL! AGREE!

I have to admit...there has been a few  times in MMO's and FPS games where I'd LOVE to have had the opportunity to punch someone in the kisser....I am pretty good usually about keeping cool, and rarely lose it...but when I do, I do one of two things when I start getting upset that instantly cool my jets....

    1) Just stop playing that particular game if the level of idiocy is ruining my gaming experience.

    2) Take satisfaction in knowing that more than likely, the offender is acting like a tough guy or all around douchebag because they can't do it in RL...because they are chicken *@$%. So they do it somewhere they know they can't get curb stomped. And that makes me feel sad for them then and the anger goes away. =P

I LOVE how this thread has devolved from the REAL issue here.

You have a 13 year old kid... playing a game RATED MATURE.  Yes, the guy went an beat his tail.  I don't feel bad.

Obviously te parents weren't doing their job.  My kid has been saying yes sir/ma'am, no sir/ma'am from the time they could speak.

So in a game... where you have USERNAMES... this kid mocked a guy... dude got his real name/address SOMEHOW... tracked him down... and strangled him Homer-style.

Sorry.. anonymity should only go so far.  If you feel the need to start berating someone you should be prepared for the consequences.  We prosecute the adults when kids invite grownups over to do stuff they shouldn't be doing.  Why dont we smack the kids as well?  If someone gets a pic of an underage girl/bow, we prosecute the person for child abuse but not the underage girl/boy for taking the picture as a distributor?

We have become a world where kids who CAN make choices, often make the bad decision simply BECAUSE they can.  They know the possible implications and they ignore it anyways.

Is being a kid not a learning process? they dont have the foresight adults have, maybe you should lay off the 13 year old kid, who is just a kid and doesn't know any better.  next you'll be telling 8 year olds to grow up.

Except for #2, when someone is female.  I hate to admit it, but being female lets me get away with being a lot more mouthy in all situations than it really should.  As I've gotten older, however, I tend to let others throw the first verbal punch.  Then I can be a total jackass without feeling bad for it.  image

In my opinion both the kid and dude were wrong. However going over to a kid's house to give him a beating is worse than smacktalk over the internet. It's like in real life, do you know what kind of people go full berserk over smacktalk? Those same guys who end up in jail for robberies, drug use , etc. The scum of society. (do mind there is a difference between someone smacktalking and someone harrassing you for longer periods)

What the guy should have done is:

    A) Mute the kiddo

    B) Switch Server

    C) go over there to lecture his parents on raising a kid which acts like an obnoxious twat and allowing him to play games which he isn't supposed to play.

    D) Stop playing and actually look for a job. (!!!!)
