are you suggesting OP that if i give you my real name and home address that would prevent me from calling you names and saying things like.."UMADBRO?" Probably not. I hear all of this when I am looting wrecks/cans in EvE after gatecamping. RealID would be used by the same people that suck at games to try and force "real world" definitions of "ganking" or "griefing".
Ganking and griefing are clearly defined in most MMO's that I have played...but now you are offering to these players another way out. They could find where you live, follow you around, follow my kids to their schools, etc. Um no. This ofc would then lead to more IRL violence from me doing harm to them.
Think abou this for just a sec. Reread the part where he went to the kids house. What happened? The kids mother became outraged and called the police. Think about that for a moment. What if the mouthy little troll's dad had answered the door? Words exchanged, etc. Now, if you live in my state in the United States, I have the right to defend my property with deadly force if I feel THREATENED.
So, assuming you want my real life info spread to every game server I play on...and someone shows up at my house, threatening my kid...how exactly is this benefitting anyone? In my state, I wouldn't be convicted, I would be applauded for defending my family. The idiot that "lost his mind" and "became irrational" now has a family with one parent. Did that solve the issue of my kid asking him repeatedly "umadbro"?
Think about it. Why don't you tell us what country and state you are from..maybe that would enlighten us about why you would even suggest a horrible course of action like this.
In closing...kid typed words and enjoyed taunting another online player. Online player was a grown man that lost his temper. Everything so far happens everyday. Now grown man travels to kids house to "straighten him out". Admitting later, he made a mistake. He even acknowledged that he was wrong. He's lucky he wasn't killed.
There is a reason RealID didn't work.

13yr old playing CoD is not right. However on here a few days ago someone was asking for advice on a cheap laptop to get for an 8 yr old to play SW:TOR. When I suggested that maybe 8 yr olds shoulnt be playing MMORPG's I was told by other posters that the thread was about technical advice and basically to butt out

Well then we should have RealID, and you could go over to the 'other poster's' house and beat some sense into him for being on the wrong side of an issue.

Not my style bro, I just hacked his account, seduced his wife by email, moved in with her and now only let his 14yr old son play Hello Kitty online, he won't be denying the force of my arguments on MMORPG.com again

The, what was it again? "Jobless father of three" , should of handled that better. That doesn't mean I think the kid is off the hook. I, personally despise large amounts of smack in games. Once or twice is fine, because I'll even partcipate in it. But constant smacking is just stupid, and does nothing other than "lulz".

Sounds like something a 13 year old would say.
Funny, I thought it was a more amusing response than your suggestion of beating him up

You should but out. That's up to the kid's parents.
I did butt out after my one comment, people are responsible for their own lives and families
You guys are RATIONALIZING a complete psycho? This is NEVER OKAY. I don't care if someone is in your face, spit flying as they shout insults about your dead grandma, you NEVER lay a hand on someone over words, forget actions in a game. If that were my son I'd ask for the mic and join in with mocking the guy getting butthurt over my son Pwning him and taunting.
This is exactly WHY realID is a terrible idea. all it will is enable psychos like that man who should be kept far away from an Xbox if a 13 year old can make him so mad. Preferably a padded cell with lots of medication,
Both were stupid. I probably would've caught the kid downtown or something and gave him notice that I was the guy he was badgering and threatened to kick his ass. Going to his house and strangling or doing anything violent is dumb, but acting stupid over the internet is stupid too.
Oh and if someone can't deal with the pathetic attempts at harassment a 13 year old tries to throw at them... oh dear.
Oh dear, you haven't run into some of the 13 year olds I have. Lucky you. Some of the kids (and adults) in these games are a convincing argument for mass sterilization of our species.
Like we needed another one.
First they came for Madmorga, but I was not Madmorga, so I did nothing
Shame on you, that's one of my favorite quotes, too. But it's okay, you didn't have to do anything. I shot them all and buried them in the back yard. You should see what it did for my roses!
Oh, and by the way, the Eugenics movement started in the United States, not in Germany. The more history you know, or knowing history is half the battle, or something.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
Somehow I find it funny that the company that has made its best to remove all the social aspect of their games are simultanously obsessed with this awkward concept of realID. While playing any MMORPG, I really don't need to know who my fellow players are or where they are from. What I want to know is can I trust them and are they capable to help me to achieve my short term goals in the game.
I play online games to have good time with people from other countries and cultures, maybe learn something from them and enjoy a good game. Their identitys and names means nothing to me, and I'm certainly not going to tell mine to anyone in internet. RealID is one of the reasons I have Activision-Blizzard on my blacklist and stays there until Kotick + Morheim resigns.
Really the only thing to discuss in this thread is a) what the "adult" in the case is convicted of, and b) how long he spends in jail.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
People really should strive to develop a thicker skin if they choose to participate in multiplayer gaming. Having a real name attached to anything doesn't negate or stop verbally abusive behavior. If anything, I can already hear the cries of "Come at me, bro". Really, if a 13-year old running their mouth is enough to lead to murder, I would hate to make the mistake of cutting that person off in traffic.
Conversely, as a female gamer I can say that, without a doubt, Real ID would immediately cease all of my involvement with that particular gaming company. I very rarely use my real name as I was the victim of violent stalking that ended only upon this man's imprisonment. I have since moved out of state, changed my habits, my hair color, and even cut off contact with many former friends in my life in order to insure he would not find me. The mentality that this particular person has (and I'm sure a majority of the mentally deranged) is that of an animal focused on their prey. While my case is the minority, I assure you that those of us who have dealt with these problems would rather not have our information "released" in order to prevent our smack talking. And also, have you not seen how some males act upon hearing a female on the other end of a game? It's as if you just walked through a dog park carrying a cooler full of raw steak. No thank you. Late night phone calls from 15 year olds that are certain of their connection with you is a no-go for myself and I'm sure 99.9999 percent of the female gaming community.

What you said was typical 13 year old stuff. They tend to try too hard

In one breath you claim that people who react this way have a mental instability, and then in another you state that you would join in and mock said person for becoming so upset.
Mental disabilities are no laughing matter, sir.
Maybe people shouldn't get so 'butthurt' when someone reacts negatively when provoked through verbal harassment and taunting. Particularly so if some of said people are "psychos", maybe people should think twice before running their mouths off at strangers.

Amen. I am all for that. The amn should not have lost his cool but then again the kid was acting like a punk so he deserved to be throttled just not by a 46 year old man. Unless it was his father knocking some basic human decency into him. In this case it is safe to say both should be sterilized one for being too attched to a videogame and one just for being a general plague upon society.

Sorry about the stalker truama elle. However in all honesty the cooler full of steak comment could be applied to just about any bar in the country. As society and social media have done nothing but ruin all that was decent about being a grown man now we are flooded with of legal casaulties of puberty unfit of ever being called a man. I did not relaize it was this bad until after a decade away i went back to college for another degree and was disgusted at what passed for male behavior on campuses. So, the solution for a person finding out someones idenity and seeking them out with intent of reall violence... Is to make this even easyer?
I dont see how reallID would do anything but make this sort of thing more common.

I was trying to be funny too, and if you disagree I'll beat your ass up.
Just make a three strike rule in multiplayer gaming.
If you're a shit talking dipshit and someone reports u with proof you should be perma-banned from online play forever.
Playing: Nothing
Looking forward to: Nothing
Hopefully it's:
A) Assault
Probation and mandatory anger management.
I don't condone violence, but the kid wasn't exactly innocent in the whole thing.
