Thats because if you PREORDER you are allowed to start playing a few days early. It is not an open beta, it is a beta thats server is online on weekends.
you may be right -- time will tell but the link specified this
I had asked him how long Beta weekends will be going on for and he said right up until launch, and then said the above quote.
guess it all depends if pre-order is required and how soon these beta weekends start
Wormwyrm, with all due respect, I would suggest there are better ways to spend your time than trashing a game you have no intention of ever playing. You aren't going to convert anyone, so maybe spend more time talking about games that YOU like?
I think most of the people on the forums here at MMORPG.COM have seen enough games released to know that bad games do THIS:
shield themselves behind a NDA until the last moment ("we told them it wasn't ready!!")
push the games release early for christmas
push to release before a competitor (several coming next year)
push out carefully controlled positive reviews (some you can read between the lines)
do not have an open beta
do not have a very large beta
have short, carefully chosen demos
rely on IP and pre-release marketing to sell pre-orders
copy other MMOs in hope of migrating them away
put their forum under heavy moderation and carefully prune it
rely on hooks to get new players buying the game (voice overs are NOT going to be interesting after a year of playing this, guys) instead of investing in gameplay that embraces players creativity and builds community
And YES bad games do not want you to demo for too long, because they are scared the public will find out the truth before they buy the game.
Basically this. Any counter to this arguement and I will simply say Rift and leave it there. Aion, WAR, FF14 did all of the above before they released.

. Most of your previews are CGI based
Yeah, except there is a pretty healthy debate over how good of a game Rift really is. So I wouldn't necessarily use that as some kind of a standard on anything except how to market.
Also, your point about previews being CGI based is simply untrue. There are tons of gameplay videos of SWTOR all over the place. Not sure how many more you could possibly expect there to be.

You're wrong:
Gametesting has been going on for years and they've had more people in it then most games get in Open Beta.
Outright lie. The numbers are unreleased and low.
Weekend testing is set to encompass most people who signed up for gametesting on the forums (thats over 1.5 million people).
"Weekend Testing". That is the beta. I keep up with SWTOR news, so I know that 'weekend testing' already started. Few people on the forums were invited. Most who were did not get to experience the game due to server database issues.
They've had playable demos at shows for plenty of years, many of those shows allowed players to play for 20+ minutes.
Yes, 20 minutes of a MMO, showing in the demo their best quality stuff, just like all the other bad mmos do.
There have been few bad reviews, but a lot of the reviews, even player reviews that cannot be bought or moderated have been overly positive
Player reviews are by fans of the game, what do you expect? Lol. But yes, you are right, they can't control all the reviews, and that is why some information has gotten out about how the game is still unstable and monotonous.
There forum is heavily moderated -- when there are tons of duplicate posts. Its a lot better then the forums at GW2guru and just about on par with MMORPG.com
Their forums delete posts left and right, if you visited them sometimes you would probably see them being deleted. It is common for a games forums to be moderated more than a fansite like mmorpg.com of course but I have never seen the amount of modifications to posts. Of course, I have been following SWTOR really closely and I've only ever done that with a handful of other games, but those games moderators were all much more accepting of criticism and questions.
The "hooks" they use to get new players to buy the game are more important then you realize, and since you know nothing about the game I wouldn't expect you to understand.
The hooks are just hooks, that is it. There is no expanded gameplay or purpose to them. You don't know what you are talking about because you aren't following the game at all, it is cute how hopeful you are though.
Most games push for a target release date. BioWare said their target would be 2011, they are pushing to meet that date. If they could have released earlier, they would have.
Their release date is set to December, before XMAS and before the release of several 2012 big MMOs. They would NEVER pusht hat back no matter how much they needed to, it isn't up to them, marketing is set on this date to maximize sales.
Most triple A titles with an NDA in effect don't drop it until the game is ready for release, SWTOR is still a couple months away. Have you heard news from testing in Firefall yet? Prime Battle for Dominus? No? Hmm...
Untrue and those games are irrelevant.
It's amazing how outright lies are posted... I wonder if people believe them on this forum? Here are some corrections.
DE said way before the weekend tests they have well over 1000 testers playing.
Testing is ongoing for weekend tests, and those that had problems logging in get to play at the next weekend test too.
I said 20+ minutes ranging anywhere from PvP, to starting world PvE to Flashpoints, some flashpoints can take 30 - 60 minutes as they've said before.
I've been on their forums a lot, They delete a lot of the ridiculousness and duplicates that we see. Their forums are more active then even MMORPG.com, the moderation needs to be handled accordingly.
I'm not following the game at all? I'm playing the game.
They set a release timeframe before 2012, if they needed to, they already said they would push back the game, as they mentioned it to investors.
And lastly, lol its untrue because "those games are irrelevant"? LOL some people just literally, have no clue.
I think most of the people on the forums here at MMORPG.COM have seen enough games released to know that bad games do THIS:
shield themselves behind a NDA until the last moment ("we told them it wasn't ready!!")

What about the ones that did all that and still failed?

pre-ordering is not required to be eligable for beta weekends. you just need to be registered on the official site and select to be entered for testing.
What advice would you have for fans that are interested in taking part in the recently announced September beta testing weekends?
Weekends plural! It isn't just one weekend in September. It will be a program we will continue to roll out. I don't know how many we will do in September, but we certainly plan to continue them past September. There really isn't any advice, as all you have to do is sign up to be a game tester and you are eligible for them just like you can be selected for the present game testing program. We are going to invite a larger number of people than we ever have before during those weekends, so there is a greater chance we select you. Hopefully this can be something many can enjoy.
Gaou is my favorite. Ever get that monitor fixed? You should be in game already.
not scheduled to get here till wed. its taking to damn long of course doesnt help im too cheap to pay for faster shipping. XD
edit: although i do have to say this downtime has given me a chance to get back into link finding form. having not been as active over here past few weeks, it was taking me a long time to remember where exactly to find everything. i would like to give a special " Damn you! (shakes fist in the air*)" to georg. just way too many posts to search through when i need to quote him(even worse now *wink wink*). XD
Don't you understand that a person who thinks like that will think like that regardless of the subject matter? A person who thinks differently will have the exact opposite idea to the former on all counts as well. It basically boils down to how their mind is wired.
Will be hard to convince fans from manchester city to become a chelsea fan offcourse. (GWversusSW)
I had high hopes after watching the SW trailer for the 1st time, i was born in 1979 and grew up with it more or less.
Playing all the starwars games on consoles and pc.
So when the SW mmo was anounced i was very glad to see Bioware was up for that task.
They had that massive budget to go with it.
Then i saw the 1st gameplay footage and was like >No Way<
Ive said it to many times already and wont bash SW further and many if the SW fans wont ever agree with me.
But SW has failed me big time in more ways then one.
Yes iam waiting for GW2 now and iam alot more positive over GW2 then SW as you can see.
When GW2 was anounced and the 1st footage and trailers here released i was sold, but i must admit its fantasy IP number #12312312 even with breaking many traditional mmo parts like no healers and no quest but more active dynamic events.
yada yada yada you know what i mean.
But what i like to hear from SW fans is the following.
are you happy the way SW mmo is the way it is ?
Arent you disapointed you cannot realy explore free space universe in lots of lots of spaceships ?
And a Eve like Alliance system where republic and empire can control parts of space and worlds ?
The engine they use ?
The animations etc etc ?
These things iam is what i expected of a massive budget and bioware creating an SW IP
It's amazing how outright lies are posted... I wonder if people believe them on this forum? Here are some corrections.
What's hilarious is that your "corrections" are almost entirely wrong.
I'd go into more detail, but the NDA prevents me from doing so. Suffice it to say, you've got a lot of red text and a lot of bullshit to go with it.
I agree, but the NDA is doing more harm than good at this point; it's allowing know-nothings to spread total rubbish, when there are many people who would happily shoot them down in flames.

I would love to shoot them down in flames, but theres no need. They ll be missing out on one great game, and honestly I could care less:)

I'd happily take a flamethrower to the misniformation on these boards, but at this point, I'm over it.
Haters are going to hate, and if people are going to be gullible enough to believe the outrageous misinforation that the haters and trolls spread on this forum and elsewhere, then it's their own damn fault for missing out on what will be a great gaming experience.
I know what I've experienced these last few months in the beta. It's so far removed from the lies and distortions around here that it's really not worth the agita to fight against it anymore. Let people hate. When the game's right in front of them they will see just how much they got wrong. *shrug*

You don't sound like your very 'over it' tbh...
I would also be intrested in which beta group you was in that has let you test for months.
Look, the truth is that having a different opinion (ie not thinking much of the game) dosent make people 'haters' or 'trolls'. It just means they have a different opinion. They are not out to annoy you, they just want to say how they feel, just as you do. In fact, your post here could easily be called a 'troll' post as much as any other in this thread. It seems to do little but seek to flame others.
I guess what I am saying is lets just talk about games and not resort to silly names and labels in an effort to offend each other?

Trust me, the NDA is definitely not doing more harm than good. SWTOR would get rid of it otherwise: the one thing they seem to be good at is marketing.
Lidane, you simply say "you're corrections are wrong" and use "I am in beta" to 'prove' it? Seriously, nobody here is stupid enough to take your word when you are so commited to the game and wish me to be wrong. Your lack of reasoning and evidence is telling of who is 'wrong'.

I am also curious as to what games he considers relevant.
back around pax east they had 2k testers going. there were more before them and many more since then.
and testing began back in july 2010(well was first announced to be going on)

This thread is almost getting funny now.
What a review from Massively.
I've been lucky enough to get into beta for this coming weekend. It will answer most of the questions I have about the game. Looking forward to it.
