He played for less than 10 minutes!!! The author is a huge Eve / sandbox / GW2 fan (look at his previous articles). He wanted to write a negative piece on SWToR before he even played the game. What he did is called trolling.

I wrote a decent post about that in particular here : http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/4482041#4482041

but even moreso, "they should have showcased better"  is something he does say,  but then, they also showcased the Warzones there as he mentions,  which he didn't play,  and warzones last between 15 - 20 minutes of gameplay time.  Would his impression be different if he tried something else?  I would say -- most likely.

I cannot believe this thread has gone on this long.  The guy gave his impression, and admitted that the game may get better.  MMOs are often critisized for not having as good a starting area as they need, to grab the person better.  This is almost always true for a game still in beta....Companies will often then revamp and tweak the beginnings more, closer to launch.

I am skeptical of the game being one I will enjoy, VO isn't big for me, and I really don't like the companion thing, it almost seems like now I gotta level up and gear up my guy and them now too....But I will probably give it a shot, while I wait on the release of some other stuff.

And unfortunatly it doesn't favor SWTOR.  While I understands the reasons to want to dismiss a review like this for not be serius enough, and the anger it can evoke, I still think that the feedback he gets here sinks down to a level, that his writing is way above.

The author choose not play in any of the SWToR Warfront demos or any other of the other SWToR demos at the convention.  So he could not be bothered to play a SWToR Warfront or any other SWToR demo for 15 more minutes? No, he wanted to write a troll article bashing SWToR from the very get go. His opinion was already set before he sat down to play.  The author wanted to go play GW2 and that is what he did. Sorry, the author of that article is a classic troll. His mind was made up before playing.  I have lost a lot of respect for massively over this.

Well, I wouldn't go that far,  there are some at massively who have tried it and had good impressions.  This guy just was one bad egg who played 10 minutes of the starting area after waiting for hours,  and was a little jaded by it all.

He did ask why they didn't showcase something better if there was only 10 minutes,  but he also DID fail to play the warzone,  so his chance was missed there too.

But we're going to see this,  even after some people play it,  they still just won't like the game, and thats fine.  It doesn't mean that its

    1. A bad game

    2. Broken

    or 3. Boring

It just means, people have different tastes.

Maybe this guy wants to be immersed in a world of magic fireballs and dragon slayings.  Theres nothing wrong with that.  Was he a little quick to judge?  Yeah.  A little biased?  Likely.  But everyone will be to some degree.  He just had a bad experience.

The first 10 minutes are crucial.  If it doesn't keep the player interested, they aren't going to continue to play.

Disagree. For most games (and MMOs in particular) it takes more than 10 minutes before most people can decide if they are going to like it or not.

If I pay $60 for a game, I'm certainly going to give it more than 10 minutes before deciding I'm done playing it.

Wow, how does this wheel keep on turning. If only we could turn it into a source of energy.

    1) The guy didn't like the game. Get over it. Not everyone is as stoked for this game as you are.

    2) Yes, we get it. If you buy a game you rarely spend just 10minutes making up your mind. However, by then you already have a vested interest in the game. This is coming from the perspective of someone trying to make up their mind about whether they want to spend money on the game at all. Not from someone who has already shelled out 60-100+$ before even trying the game. Completely different situations.

    3) It's a convetion demo, not a beta. The entire point (as mentioned in the article) of a convention is to generate hype, and get players hooked on games. It is not the guests responsibility to be thrilled. It's the developers. If people leave unimpressed (or worse, upset) then it's really hard to blame them most of the time. Almost always this is a failure on marketing's part. That's the impression I got out of this as well.

    4) The guy was only able to play 10minutes (that was the demo time). Could he have gone back? Yes, but 3-6hours is a long wait for a game you have a really bad first impression of. It's a gaming convention, not a TOR convention, I'm sure he wasn't there for TOR exclusively.

So, calm those light sabers. There's already pleanty of positive reviews. There really is no need to go around bashing or force gripping every review you find that results in a negative response. Not everyone will like this game, it does NOT mean it's a bad game. Get used to it.

Honestly Bioware is the only one to blame for people being unimpressed. I mean the standard demo time for GW2 is 40-45 minutes, why is TOR only 10 and with less booths? It's as if they're afraid to show off the game. Anet is very open to people playing their game.

At the demos the demos devs for GW2 often help people as they play the game and explain certain aspects in fuller detail. They even offer direct feeds to people who bring their cameras so that they have game footage to show to others. They know they have a good game and are damn proud to show it off.

Bioware giving only snippets and "not enough time to judge" is plain and simply their fault, The whole point of demos is for people to get a feel for the game so they can get excited and hyped to buy it. It almost seems like they want to make sure people won't know exactly how it plays, as if they're hiding something.

  • ShredderSEShredderSE Member Posts: 197

It's kind of simple. Bioware used too much time and money on making the VO work. And they been thinking that story is nr 1, but irl people will just skip the dialog so they can get more xp and level up.

EA are sick of them and now they whip them hard every night until the game is out. Make it work! *Gaadiiisssh!* Fix the game you...! *Gaaadiiiisssh!" And so on... haha.

I think they don't have content for high level, so now they face same problem as Funcom. They must smile to the camera and make it all look good so people bye it. Then they can say sorry and panic patch it like nuts. Later it die...

    Thats an extremely textbook answer.

It's also the only answer I can give because of the NDA. Deal with it.

Stating which testing pool allows people for test for 6 months is not a break of the NDA, especially seeing as you found it so easy to talk about how long you have been in. It's no different.

I think you just prefer not to for personal reasons, either because it would connect you to the company in the ways I have said or that because maybe your not in at all and had no idea how their system worked before you said it.

I think you just prefer to hide behind this excuse.

Can we get a mod clarification here if I am allowed to talk about the contents of the NDA please?

Or indeed if posters are allowed to say which beta group they are in (though I ahve seen a couple of folks already say which group they are in in threads tbh).

Can´t wait for the "You have no idea , swtor is the awesomesauce bla bla bla" to change into "Dude! The game has just been released a couple of months ago! WoW and many other mmos also had so many problems during their launches"   and then  "Dude! they are patching the game with new content every week! like the other day we got a whole 5 new lightsaber skins"

I know what I think based on what I have read, but I would like to hear this site's stance on the matter.

I too would like an answer as it is extremly disturbing that posters like 'Vesavius' tries to bait people from breaking their NDA by attacking them, 'I think you just prefer to hide behind this excuse.'

Honestly Jpnz, calm down... I have asked for clarification, no need for the additional jibes or flaming.

I am not 'attacking' anyone, I am just giving my opinion based on whats being presented. I am allowed to do that.

'extremely disturbing'... lmao... drama much? :D

You're not allowed to say which testing group you were in, just about the only thing you're allowed to say under the NDA is 'I tested'.

I have seen people state their beta group multiple times, and others have posted repeatedly on how long they have been playing (with Lidane stating he/she has been in for 6+ months herself), with no action being taken agaimnst them or the posts being removed. If they are only allowed to say literally 'I tested' then Lidane himself has broken NDA already, and thats not even touching on the fact that he/she used his/her beta experience as a basis to state that everyone else who had a different view was 'wrong'.

Hence me asking for clarification from a MOD.

You may be right, but unless your a mod, I will wait for the offical ruling.

(I do not say any of the above as a public criticism of the Mods, just as an explanation as to why the water is muddy and why I have asked for clarification).

Personally I've been sorta debating cancelling my preorder or not.

    There, I said it.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and this is probably the only thing keeping me on here.

Yeah Bioware has a lot of street cred, but Blizzard used to have this before they got into MMO's, now look at them.

I've been asking question, after question, after question, after question for months now about simple things, for example: the availability of client downloads for early access, or will pre-orders be compensated for lost "early access" due to server issues at pre-launch.  I've yet to see any sort of response from the forum mods or any of the devs.  In fact, other than coming down with the "NDA" hammer occasionally, posting a sticky (with no replies allowed) or locking a thread, I don't see these people at all.

Is this what we can expect when it comes to customer service?  Will SWTOR go through the credit card billing fiasco that Warhammer Online subscribers went through?  Don't forget, it's EA that's providing the back bone on this.  Game could be wonderful, but EA could still mess things up.

Game looks good, the videos look great, but I'm coming down off the high that is SWTOR and I have to be honest I'm feeling more "meh" if anything.  The last few releases have been shallow content at best.  Is this going to be another raid/grind fest?  Is it going to be one of those games that caters to those who play the game around the clock and tear through content exclusively?

So many questions and no answers given.

I've never known any MMO company to announce how/when/if they will allow the client to be dowloaded before the day of release (release in this case being the first day of early access).  I especially wouldn't expect this information 2 months before the game is released.

Having said that it's pretty easy to guess how it will work.  If you purchase through Origin you will be able to download the game on the first day of the headstart.  If you purchased from another source you have to wait until you have the box before you will be able to play.

or will pre-orders be compensated for lost "early access" due to server issues at pre-launch.

This is not something that they would announce beforehand and would deal with it if the situation arises.  Just like every other MMO release.  I wouldn't hold my breath for any sort of compensation though.

I've yet to see any sort of response from the forum mods or any of the devs.

And why should you?  You are asking for information they probably haven't even decided on yet.

Bad communication from the community staff does not equal a bad game.

Is this what we can expect when it comes to customer service?

Customer service does not equal community reps.

Will SWTOR go through the credit card billing fiasco that Warhammer Online subscribers went through?  Don't forget, it's EA that's providing the back bone on this.  Game could be wonderful, but EA could still mess things up.

No argument from me there.  But I doubt they would make the same mistake twice.  Two different mistakes is not out of the question though.

That is definitely a no.  The game caters to those of us who want a Bioware story to play through with our friends.  From what I've seen the combat is mediocare at best, the classes, weapons, and armor are uninspired (you can only have so many different glow-swords) and the non-story elements of the game can only be described as resembling a generic hotkey MMO.

If you come into SWTOR expecting anything but a completely generic MMO experience (EQ2, WoW, LOTRO) with a ton of really interesting dialogue and story that your character can mildly influence, you are in for a big disappointment.

So many questions and no answers given.

Seems like the examples you gave for questions were unreasonable, in my opinion.

I'd be surprised if any quest did not entail Killing/Collecting X of Y.  Go play KOTOR, you will have a bunch of interesting story leading up to go kill X or go find Y.  Same thing basically in SWTOR.

Or indeed if posters are allowed to say which beta group they are in (though I ahve seen a couple of folks already say which group they are in in threads tbh).

The official word from BioWare is you can say that you are in beta. That is it. No impressions, opinions, descriptions of materials, the NDA, none of it. I can't find the exact quote right now, but that is how they have put it. So we're basically sticking to that.
