Poor Swtor Preview on Bit Tech

CorehavenCorehaven Member UncommonPosts: 1,533

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2011/04/29/star-wars-the-old-republic-preview/1

Not making a fancy post here.  This is the preview I found.  I was actually looking for something positive but this caught my attention.    Just a preview though.  Keep that in mind.

But it doest back up a lot of what people saying.  People who are put off by the game at least.

Just sounds like the game isn't his cup of tea. It will be enjoyed by quite a few people though.

  • whilanwhilan Member UncommonPosts: 3,472

Already posted a while back, 6 months old.  meh he can have his say. Personally i don't take previews with much salt. i take them as a whole. As a whole the opinoin seems to be that game is well polished fun and immersive. IIRC this reviwer correctly he took issue with things spawning into the world which was just one of his complaints of the game.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Of that I have no doubt.  It'll find its way I guess.  I hope Bioware pulls this through somehow.  Bethesda is my favorite developer these days, but Bioware once held that spot.   I wouldnt mind if they did again.  Not holding my breath though.  I dont know if its EA or something else.

That article is difficult to read both in content and style, his writing is just terrible. Also that article was written back in April, and I remember this guy getting torn apart on several forums for his article.

  • twodayslatetwodayslate Member Posts: 724

Granted it is a six month old article, but that line at the end of the second paragraph will probably be a sentiment that a lot of these hyped up fans will be repeating in a few months after launch, when they start to get bored of it and drop off of the gear treadmill.

"It’s plain and staid and deathly dull. It’s both exactly the same as every other MMO we've played, but at the same time so much worse because it promises so much more."

They definitely have some problems coming with this "we are so different from every MMO out there, yet we are keeping the themepark status quo the same" line that they are pushing.

Lol!  Way to dig up a 6 month old article to somehow "prove" your "point".  Are you really that desperate to tear down this game?     Gotta love how people get so emotional because a gaming company doesn't make one aspect of gameplay THEIR way, so they spend countless hours trying to tear the whole game down and convince others not to buy it.  The haters are emotional, plain and simple.  If I didn't care for a game, I simply wouldn't bother thinking twice about it.  I wouldn't spend days, weeks, months, years lurking on the boards trash talking it and pouncing on positive feedback/articles.  It's like it will be a major tragedy in their lives if people actually love this game.

Time to move on.  It's just a game.

I dont get it either. I've played SWTOR and I loved it, but never have I felt the need to rush to the forums and wildly attempt to get everyone to feel the same way I do. I dont think I will ever understand why people search high and low to find articles from people who did not like a specific game. Play what you enjoy playing, stop worring about everyone else and let them forumlate their own opinions.

Hm. I am still VERY much on the fence with all this. So take it as a grain of salt, BUT: In my opinion one issue is the gap between the dramatization of the story and the executing in the gameplay.

You get a huge, impressive storyline, and then the everyday stuff you do is so mundane. Like kill 5 Imperial Snipers. Or loot 10 Republic Soldier badges. I mean, I know the bottom line will always be something like that, but there are more exciting ways to make this gameplay wise. For instance, if you are a Sith Lord, why don't the Rep Soldiers don't yell something? Or try to run or work together or SOMETHING that dramatizes the fight? No, they just STAND THERE, gaze at you and then go to standard MMO combat. And unlike the movie Sith Lord, who might make a comment or go into a threatning pose or what, no dramatizing stuff whatsoever is done. It is just plain and simple WOW like combat farming.

It is this huge gap between the dramatic feeling of the story and the standard fare relatively boring combat & gameplay.

Also, in the few vids I have seen, mobs just stood there and in the same way NPCs who are citizens are also glued to the ground and display zero city life. So it does not look very animated or alife. Like this quote also says: "There was none of the hustle or bustle you’d expect of a thriving interstellar universe, merely same-faced folk standing in an under-populated shell of a world. Only in an MMO is it possible to feel so alone."

Just my 5ct on this matter.

Don't you just find that part ironic ?

You're bashing him for posting a preview. Nothing more or less, just posting. And yet, somehow he's the one who's emotional? Maybe you should move on? Because as you stated, it is just a game.

Since when does posting an opinion automatically make someone a hater. This isn't 'nam, Dude.

That just doesn't make any sense at all. They have said that they are creating a Themepark MMO with all the features plus their own twists. And putting the RPG back into the MMO. Something that has been missing. The forth pillar as they have said. So the fourth pillar is new and the other three are of the same mold. How is that saying that they are creating something "so different"?

Personally I have been following and looking forward to playing a BW RPG in the form of a MMORPG. So I will be getting exactly that. And a very good one. Anyone expecting the second coming did that on their own. I don't care much for the positive or negative previews anymore. I have played the game, so I base everything on my own feeling and experiences. So come Dec I will be a very happy camper for quite awhile.

To each his/her own when it comes to how you feel about a game. Fun, not fun, hate it love it, none of it maters to anyone else but you and your friends. Give it a shot if you like RPGs and Themepark MMOs, don't play it if you hate both of those. No need to tell everyone that the game is going to fail if you don't like it. Just post an opinion and don't play. Why try to force others to get on board with your dislike? (this is a general statement, not to the quoted post)

One thing i find funny is the guy is clearly talking negative about the game. then right next to it is an ad for pre-ordering swtor. Just found it funny is all.

as for the article itself i will point out a few lines that i did before

Each class and character has a unique story, but functionally you’ll still spend all your time collecting or destroying arbitrarily chosen items.

I hate to break it to this guy but thats how MMOs work. Thats how they always work. You get stuff you destroy stuff you go here, you talk to that. I haven't seen a single MMO heck even single player game that doesn't work like that. So...he has issue with a base mechanice of games.

the stories aren’t interesting on an individual basis either. That’s partly because you know that there aren’t any real individuals

So here from context he states the stories aren't that interesting because your dealing with NPC instead of people...oookay.

    – a quest may be written to address only you, but the streets are still thronged with players cycling the same quests

Not sure what you can do about this. How do you tailor make quests? Does he understand how much time it would take to make a new quest for each one of the thousands of people. No game has been able to do this. None. Not even any of the upcoming ones will do that. Why single out swtor in this? Everyone of the upcoming or previous games have had this flaw..it's game design.

So he takes issue with basic gameplay mechanics...okay i don't even know what to say with that. That is the reason the guy got torn apart. I could write something similar about any game and hold true.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

By that same logic, shouldn't all the supporters just post once and then fuck off?  How many threads do you see per hour pop up on this site by some rabid omgwtfstarwars fan, going on and on about how this is going to be the next WoW (probably is, though not for the reasons they think it will), and how TOR is going to revolutionize MMOs for the better?

Cant say I neither dislike or am dissapointed.  Perhaps a little disenchanted as time rolls by.

And first thing?  First thing I do.  Sure beans man.  Guess I should have posted a postive one and ranted how it was wrong, or post this one and ranted how it was right.  Too bad I did neither.

But do what ya like bud.

And I do apologize because these bad previews really do need to be swept under the rug.  Good previews though?  Oh those need to have all the pretty spotlights from the Twentith Century Fox intro shined on them and then God needs to extend his finger down on it just before you hear a "Diiiing" sound.  I wont say what finger but I'll leave that to your imagination.

    /gets off soapbox

By that same logic, shouldn't all the supporters just post once and then fuck off?  How many threads do you see per hour pop up on this site by some rabid omgwtfstarwars fan, going on and on about how this is going to be the next WoW (probably is, though not for the reasons they think it will), and how TOR is going to revolutionize MMOs for the better?

I wouldn't use your colorful banter, but I do agree to a point.

There are some who just want to let others know about what has been said by a dev or a video or some new facts. Like posting from the dev tracker or the friday update or inteviews from game shows. Or being happy about getting an invite to test. But going overboard on the happy train is a problem as well. That is where most of the hype comes from. It comes from over the top fans, not the devs or company making a game.

So I agree, anyone stating that this will be the second coming as I said in my post is wrong as well. It is just a new AAA Themepark MMO. With a big IP and Developer. But the problem is also how the person reading something feels about the game. You said about "how TOR is going to revolutionize MMOs for the better". That IMO is something you infered from reading, not something said by any sane person posting about TOR. No dev has said this and very very few use the word revolutionize.

Innovation is thrown out there, but that is only the new way of telling a story. It will just be a polished and improved form of a Thempark with some new ideas and features along with the old. So the extremes on both sides don't make a lot of sense. The middle ground is where most should be, but this is the internets. It is designed for the extremes. I guess that is why coming here is so intertaining, and frustrating.

Time to move on.  It's just a game.

Proving what point?  Wasnt really trying to make one.  And yea, Ive definitely got to learn to look at dates more.  Didnt even notice the age of the preview.  Apologies for that.

And in all due respect, I even said Bioware was one of my favorites.  Once upon a time.  Id rather they not fail.  Or sully their reputation.  Awhile back I was a frantic visitor of the Swtor forums and was very excited about the game.  Its those CGI trailers that did it.  They were amazing.

Then the more of the actual game I saw, the less I was impressed.  Oh it took a long time to tear me down.  But they managed.  If the game is actually fantastic in the end I'll never be more glad to have been proven wrong.  But so far Im very dissapointed.  Hype didnt really factor into it.  I just thought this was going to be something special.

Maybe it will be.  But I see no indication of that yet.

When I am disapointed and dislike a game the first thing I do is go to its news section and post negative articals.

Oh no those need to stop too because once again its just one guys opinion, and thus does not speak for me personally.

This is really why I try to avoid forums.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
