Imo TOR could use a couple of extra fresh ideas to be the greatest mmorpg ever created, but for me it is THE ONLY mmorpg currently, so I cannot wait for the launch. I liked the weekend in beta very much and I'm glad to finally have something to play on the mmorpg front that felt like I could cling onto for at least some time, and not an experience like Rift/WAR/Aion was for me, where I instantly felt amagad this wont last for many days.
Now it's up to Bioware to pull all the coolest and most fun ideas from the "wall of crazy" with haste and drop em for people and we have a winner.
Funny, I played through the weekend and now I have a dissapointed taste left in my mouth. It took maybe 5 mins to familiarize yourself with the gameplay, and it just felt too similiar to most themepark games out there and after those 5 mins it was just watching your toolbar for cooldowns. Suprisingly some of my opinions changed during my time playing, like the companions seemed like a lot of fun, and it was fun micromanaging them while being in a flashpoint, for example. I was very much against the idea of companions in when I heard about them, but I grew to like them during the weekend. There were other good points too, and I hope other developers I will copy those to future games.
But I most certainly not pay monthly to play the game. It just felt a bit too shallow for me, and like I said, too familiar and I could FEEL the gring already in the very beginning. The voice overs didnt really make it feel less of a grind, I actually noticed that everytime I logged in, I could listen to the voice overs for maybe an hour tops, and then they would start annoying me as my attention span grew shorter. But thats the average human attention span I suppose, and also way classes in school are kept around an hour.
Great game, I will be preordering another copy, I been in game design and so far they did alot of great work , yes some of the game has some of the same features or close to other games, but they do that on purpose if something works, you use it, thats common practice. people do not understand that at all, Big companies are not gonna take a huge chance and knowing gamers have them find another reason to whine, this game will do well and be around for many years like WOW has.
So for Bioware first MMO they have done a fantastic job, they had some issues BUT its beta and I expect that , i have tested many games through the years and do it Part time as well, so I have seen my fair of junk, but is SWTOR perfect nope, MMO's are always in beta no matter how old they are, people expect MMO's to be perfect or damn near, MMO's are a always progressing, so people just don't get it.
Anyways, haters will always hate, and people on these forums have the worst haters, I think they just don't like anything or anyone, so there just mad at life. I just ignore the haters, I bet 80% of the buy the game.
The world feels persistent?.. in what way?... it's persistent in the way that the NPCs and Mobs are in one position ALL THE TIME and never move?... sure.. it's very very persistent then
SWTOR is far far behind WoW/Lotro/Rift in all the aspects you mentioned.
Pretty fun game. Currently deciding what class and spec I want to roll for release.
One thing I find myself disappointed in is the pvp. Its just...not where I thought it would be at. But i'm willing to go along with the ride and let the game grow.
Oh and to add to the OP's comment: I personally don't find the world persistant. It may SEEM persistant but your just doing your class quest and getting the whole personal story that every other player gets. Sort of like how Blizz has implemented phasing into their game. At the end of the day, you don't really effect the game's world.
I would say games like Darkfall, Eve, and Ryzom are persistant.

Right....
Of course companies want to make profit, and especially in this case EA wants to minimize risk, and thats where I suppose I get that feeling of familiarity in gameplay. I was playing with my friend during this weekend and actually we were laughing how it resembled WoW so much. But that is not a bad thing in my opinion. And in the end, they didn't really have any other choice. If they were going for the same subscription numbers as WoW, they basically need to use the same model because there is no other model that has been able to get so many subscribers in the western market. It´s just business after all.
And no, I am not going to buy the game if you were referring to me as a hater. I don't consider myself a hater, I am just dissapointed about the wasted resources, and how slowly the mmo scene evolves.
I don't get why some users on these forums rate a game mostly based on the innovation it brings to the genre. I guess you could say the best games of a genre point to a new direction of gameplay and technical additions, but there are also a lot of games that are excellent without redefining a genre. Needless to say, most innovation happens in small steps, because the bigger steps are a big financial risk.
After all, it's all about the game and no new app on your iphone or other mobile computing device. Mobile computing is currently the biggest innovating industry. Whether all those applications have a positive impact on your life is another story, though. Games are all about fun. If you feel entertained for the duration of play or even beyond, then the game is good.
It's difficult to extract any hard information from this post, because immersion is hardly measurable. If you could tell one or two stories, which impressed you the most, others could get a feeling from where you are coming from.
Er, by making the (exaggerated IMO) claim that this title is the greatest title ever made you've invited people into your thread to prove you "wrong".
So that's what they're doing when they post the opposite? All of this negative nelly stuff is just to start a forum fight?
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
This is the greatest mmo I've ever played . hands down. The biggest reason , the world feel persistant in a way no other mmorpg has been able to acheive. The sense of being on a dark orlight side just adds to the emmersion of game.
Shadowbane was the only other game that at up this much time during the days, playing extensively as a Templar. Now SWTOR is beginning to fill that big empty void that has been created by many companies whoo simply don't get what I want.
Forget the UI the characters and all ofhe nitpicking bullshit, and just look at what this world is, it is Stars Wars, done right. A lot of games can learn from this first generation of Story based mmo, in how it creates the emmersion and the persistant world feeling as you take your character through a movie.
If you don't agree with me , that is fine, Xyson and WoW are ---> that way
I'm just going to highlight these parts above for the people trolling this thread.
So far i'm still in a very romantic stage of my relation with SWTOR, so right now i would agree with OP. Much like with any kind of love and passion, the feelings around it tends to be unrational, but often in a good way. I say just go for it, enjoy the ride, and hope it lasts for a long time. I know i will.
Hardly the greatest mmo ever, the animations seemed robotic at times, the combat is generic world of warcraft combat system, that got extremly boring to me after a short time since every fight pretty much is the same. 1,1,2,1,1,3 repeat over and over. The game is also linear as a train on its tracks, The textures looked like ps2-era textures with alot of bleeding colors and such (and i had the game set to max for everything). The classes were fairly generic and were pretty much copy and pasted from WoW and given a star wars twist. I also didn't like how the classes are pretty much identical on both sides other than skill names and animations. The game also feels very repetive at times, especally where combat is concerned.
The VO was nice, and it has a few odd things to it that I found nice, like the fast travel and such, Music when it did play was well done. Even though the game feels like world of warcraft 2.0 I might buy it, because hanging with my friend in it was quite fun, and I liked the fact I could choose diff choices during the cutscenes, some were quite funny. My rating for the game personally would be 6.5 or 7/10. It was not very impressive of a game at all, and severly lacked unique features, but it still was a bit fun. If only they would have a faction vs faction pvp land control planet, and remove the pvp earnable gear (Raid gear should be the best gear for pvp too, and hardcore pvpers are a very VERY small fraction of the total playerbase). I hate games who have to have 2 diff gear lines pvp and non-pvp. Main reason is, raiding in wow is quite worthless since there is no more use for the raid gear, same can be said of swtor since there is lv 50 pvp gear avail.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Fanboy much?
No seriously, I think it's a decent game. It's very well made, has some cool features. I just don't see it holding alot of people's interest for a long time. Too many people are getting jaded and weary of the same old combat mechanics and endgame scenario.
I love tor and its the most fun ive had in an mmo. Ive played wow 5 yrs, lotro, aoc, forsaken world , perfect world, warhammer, runes of magic and a few others.
Im not a sandbox fan so lets admit that and i love tor cause it is a themepark and a well made one thats a great ride.
I have got my sith warrior to 15 and vette is great as a coimpanion ive tried every class in game. That said i love tor and im gonna play it as long as its around.
I think most of us that love the game wouldnt care so much about the haters if they just didnt hijack every positive tor thread with these 3 simple lies they cant let go of , Single player game, no innovation, and same old same old.
while combat and mechanics are similar to alot of mmos out there the vo, story, choices u make and companions make this game diffrent then all the others in a number of ways.
Ive played alot of themeparks and no when u add in these things and the fact the kill x kill y quests are pop up b onus quests not a thing i have to pick u or turn in
The story in this game makes it feel so much more then the sum of its parts to me. Say what u will but tor to me is fun and in tne end thats how i rate my games.
Trouble with innovation is players scream for it and when they get it and its not fun they dont play it.

The difference between PVP and PVE gear is of that 5% which can be further eliminated by use of mods. There is no restriction on wearing PVP gear for PVE content and vice versa. For example Rift gear has valor and Pve gear has hit, focus etc requirements. There is no such restriction in SWTOR. i suggest, do some research before jumping to conclusions. Good players can make up for that 5% difference easily.

..Cake..
I played alot of beta's and even more mmo's.
For around 12 years i play all kinds of mmo's and SWTOR feels good.
The only thin gi notice was that npc's are lacking motions, they feel static and death.
But the world and backgrounds look good and its till in beta so who cares
I dig it and its alot better then many mmo's i played in the past years.

Hyperboling much?
My gaming blog
What else you expect? A bunch of people all agreeing with each other? What kind of discussion would that be?
Discussion =/= fight.
My gaming blog
yes the RPG element of KOTOR is inside SWTOR.
I played solo for awhile and it felt great, then i did Black Talon witha group and it was amazing.
After doing lots of Battlegrounds i was seeing a few minor bugs with sound and stuff, but nothing Bioware isnt going to adress.
I was amazed how well designed SW was in this beta and cant wait for its release.
I'm just going to highlight these parts above for the people trolling this thread.

well they didnt mythic did before bioware became bioware/mythic and part of ea so if they do say so its true.
The pvp in this game is done by some of mythics devs though.
