Only suprise there was when they said you couldn't skip the cutscenes, not sure how true this is. But without that possibility makes me wonder how many people will leave after their first free month
It is not true. You can hit the space bar to skip a given segment of the scene. two or three taps and you will be at the dialog selector. Choose your response, few more taps, done. You cannot skip making the choices since some of them effect the later story (kill someone?) or you have to choose between lightside and darkside or you are choosing to accept the quest or not. but if you have seen through it before it is easy to make your selections quickly.
I think you can also set an option to skip the scenes automatically and go straight to the selections.
If you don't want to make any choices at all then, yeah, probably not the right game to buy.
For skipping cutscenes spacebar is your friend, just don't expect it to take one press and you're done, it seems to skip that portion of dialogue and move you on to the next, I never used it on my Inquisitor but did on my Consular because I was just checking out the light side, loved the evil possibilities for my sith far too much to skip
Weird that they would gather together such negative reviews from people who had little experience with the game, no balance which always negates any kind of review for me. It's always been obvious that this was a game for people who like story, it's one of its major selling points, seems silly to moan about it. I would have to agree that the beginning areas could be a lot more epic, it would be much more enjoyable to be grabbed and thrown in to something exciting rather than the slow build we get.
I couldn't finish the video. I love the internet because it allows people to her their OP out there and when I see something from GamePro I know its going to be good. this I thought was garbage. Half the people talking said they've only played for a few hours and said the story got into the way. Then the one person who was in it for the longest called the factions the red side and the blue side... I have my issues with the game too but if I was to post something I would hope to have something useful to say. this seemed like flaming
I think it's really sad how the fans say that a vast majority of the bad opinions on TOR are coming from this site alone and how everywhere else it's been a smash hit.
Yet when something is posted by outside and known sources, they find another reason to discredit the people that speak their opinions on what they have experienced. Like the game for what it is but let's not be delusional about the games glaring faults. There are plenty there and while some can be argued as only faults to a few, it seems like the major ones are shared by many.
Anyone who did not participate in the beta here is what the game really is in a nutshell.
They took the template from Dragon Age series i.e. cutscene galore and gave you a mediocre gameplay experince, that is when you actually got to play.
Bioware is all about long and drawn out cutscenes, anyone who disputes this go get experience playing some of their other titles like the Dragon Age series for one. Mass Effect 1 was beyond excellent. With Mass Effect 2 you start experiencing more long drawn out cutscenes and smaller planet maps. Actual gameplay became the exact same thing on every planet.
Now comes along SWTOR, (which I had a lot of hope for), and a very long development period. What do we have???? Another game that is basically more cutscenes with gameplay that is less that impressive. Gameplay felt like any other mmorpg and I did not have an immersive Star Wars feeling to the gameworld and characters.
The gameplay was bland and did not have me wanting to keep playing losing track of time. In reality I felt like spending 10 minutes at a time in the game then leaving with no desire to really want to come back right away and start playing again.
Some people enjoyed it and not everyone feels the same. Alot of opinions are surfacing now and most of them are negative and not just on this website. Anyone who disputes this is like the person that says we are not in a global depression. These are the same type of people who wipe their but first, then take a cr@p, there it is for you.
And that's official is it? Because when you post all this stuff after saying "for anyone that did not participate in the beta this is the game in a nutshell" you're suggesting nothing else matters...that's final. This is the god-given truth, like it or loathe it.
How about "this is my opinion of SWTOR", or "this is what I think TOR boils down to"?

yea but I used to read gamepro all the time, Id buy there magazines as a youngin and read, really liked there magazines.

Are you really so surprised? I can only think of one other franchise with a track record similar to star wars, that still manages to somehow have such a devoted following. And that would be final fantasy.
There's actually a thread about this, how any negative 'reviews' or 'opinions' on TOR are automatically viewed as either trolling, or horribly inaccurate. I would say that, given the beta weekend, the majority of people DO like the game. However, I would also say that, out of those people; most are ignoring the flaws the game has, and the few that aren't will probably play at launch. They are skeptical as to how long they will keep playing, though. IE 'i'll play the free month'.
The question really is how long will that be able to hold up. Will the strength of the IP alone be able to make this game last, or is there a large content update coming shortly after launch we don't know about?
For some it might be "funny opinions" for others it might reflect own opinions..
Most of those who agree with their review will never bother to post in this thread as they are no longer browsing the swtor forum. They will not comment the video on youtube, because why will they bother watching a review of a game they already tried and disliked.
Well it certainly doesn't look like a WOW killer. You know one of the biggest gripes amongst Star Wars players when galaxies was released was lack of features, TOR has fewer features than Galaxies, TOR has fewer features than WOTLK people will probably pass out from listening to hours on hours of cutscenes. Simple uninspired pvp combat, Holy trinity system bleh. I mean all of that could be forgivible IF the game offerned Star Warsy features, like space combat, being kind of a lone wolf character and the shady non faction based scenarios we are used to. Instaed the game is a forced faction, linear, non immersive experience drenched in too many hours of voice over. I have to ask myself the validity of this very simple question.
WHY in gods name if you were trying to create an immersive story driven atmospheric mmorpg, would you fashion it after a WOW themepark? What is the point in voice over, in a wow clone when the point of the WOWesqe themepark is Gear Grinding? If you want to create a game driven by story that is an mmorpg you have to create an mmorpg capable of creating stories. This is my greatest fear when it came to TOR was that it would become another EA over produced disaster. Everything was pulled in the wrong direction. And you know themepark has worked and possibly can work for other genres, it has NEVER worked for the Star Wars player base. I am turning on the Death Clock on this game until it goes FTP cash shop.
I am no fan of Star Wars (the last three movies and the resulting games killed it for me). I can now claim to have seem the worse excuse for Journalism ever. I now understand why GamePro is shutting down.
I find myself hoping these idiots lose thier jobs, as if they actually did thier jobs. I reallly doubt they gave the game a fair shot. Then again, what real journalist is actually limited to an easy to get into public beta? *shakes head*
for as many problems as i have with SWTOR .. this isn't a review .. its an essay on how not to do a review. Not one piece of investigative journalism to be found in the entire 20 minute waste of time.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
This is one of the wors opinion peices I have ever sat through. The comments are only about low level of Star Warswhich ironicaly has been so muhc more captivating then the lower levels of any other game I played including wow. This is pure crap journalism and it's no wonder tttttthat game pro is being shut down and the staff being told to let the door it them on the way out as crap like this is just not acceptable.

You may have a point if this video was worth watching, considering both fans and non-fans are blasting it, I'd say it's a fair assesment that this is just plain bad journalism.

Considering the article today about how GamePro is officially dead and everyone was fired, maybe it was a last gasp of misdirected nerd rage.

But sometimes my tinfoil hat is on too tight.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Gamepros prime years are gone i remember buying gamepro back in the 90s and early 2000s. Too bad they are shutting down in 4 days for good (literally).
As for this TOR review they said they hate story....lol why are you playing ToR in the first place then?
Is it merely the last battle cry of those who don't want WoW to be back down with the masses as opposed to way out in front?
They're sitting in private cybercafes dicussing how best to sabotage the newcomer. "How do we make people think SWTOR is rubbish, Fred?" "We just write a load of crap on a forum somewhere and subvert them like a jedi, Bob." Boy, Fred, you're good."
Cant be. WOW is gonna lose all their subs to TOR, right? Cant be both ways.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
Anywhoo... first, I think they have a mixed opinion, certainly not ONLY bad. I shared some critique, some not. I could never get enough of the VO and story. But I know for some goal oriented gamers it will matter and had said so many times in the last year. This really should be no surprise.
We also all know that in most ways (alas!) SWTOR is a very old fashioned standard fare MMO. I see it as a lost chance. Just the lack of fauna, lack of animated things asf the entire topic of "sterile world" and tunnel-questing was mentioned by so many here and on the official forum, I think this critique is shared by lots of people.
Still, other things are great fun, like class stories, like companions. (Well, only they tend to stand on my loot...)
You don't have to share every critique, but it is apparent that a lot of WOW-inspired gamers WILL see it this way, like it or not. And also like it or not, I TOLD YOU SO. It is not *my* opinion in most parts. But by no means it should surprise us.

RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
I was suprised as well they "reviewed" the game with so little play time. Especially a MMO, 6 or 7 hours into a single player game I can understand.
Not sure why they released that video " review". I am not even a huge fan of ToR and I gave it more time than they all did combined I think.
