I'm still enjoying the game, but the more I play, the more I find wrong with it.
I did some PvPing yesterday and god...there is so much wrong with that.
You can't pick which map to queue for. The matches aren't tiered at all so higher level players have a huge advantage from the skills they have that you don't. And worst of all, you can't even pull up the scoreboard (damage, heals, etc.) during the match! I mean, seriously, WTF!
Now how is saying that those things are not in the game 'hating'?
Imo, it is a good comment on how incomplete the game is. It is missing these things, plus other things people are listing (ie Customizable UI, possibily a combat log, poor targeting, etc). When you start compiling a list of what is missing in the game, it is understandable why people would give it a lower score.
From the 1st 10 rated review: "There are alot of people giving this game a score of 2-4 which is a blasphemy, they should be ashamed to put such a low score on a quality game like Star Wars: The Old Republic. SWTOR is both a great game and a well put together one. Is it perfect? No but I would give them 6 months and it would probably be one of the greatest games of the decade. I would write more but I'm in the middle of a class quest! See you in game!"
From the 1st 0 bomber(rated review): "I got the collectors edition and sadly am very upset with this game. It seems like like they just used the Star Wars name to get huge fans interested like me and delivered nothing but a reskinned WoW with voice acting. I hate to give it this low of a score but it failed to deliver a single moment of enjoyment so far and I already have uninstalled the game. I'm sorry to say it does no justice to the Star Wars name."
Which review do you feel holds more honesty to its clout?
Personally I agree with the 0 bomber, because he states something that strikes true for me as well. This is MFing Star Wars for christ sakes, not Star Book.
What I find funny is that the Ostrich Zealots are saying that anyone who does not like this game is in denial? Does that not remind anyone else of the scenario between one cast iron kettle and a cast iron pot? At least the Kettle doesn't support SOPA.
And would you feel this dismissive if the majority of those reviews were positive and praising of TOR?
I'll put $20 on "No, you wouldn't". You'd be affirming them as "valid opinions".
I'd bet a further $20 that every person in this thread slamming the negative reviews and launching ad-hominems at the reviewers for daring to not like TOR and, worse, demonstrating the unmitigated audacity to actually say so, would be praising and holding up those reviews as "proof of how awesome TOR is" if they were positive.
$100 says I would win both of those bets.
Honestly, the responses/reactions of some people in this thread are just as hysterical, biased and predictable as the most critical of those on Metacritic. It doesn't matter what they're saying, how much or how little they've played or what they do and don't like about the game. All they have to do is criticize it and that's it... they're ripped to shreds without a second thought.
Why are some of you people so absolutely engraged when someone expresses a dislike for something you enjoy? Why all the intolerance and hostility toward a differing opinion? Are some of you so insecure in your own point-of-view, that you feel you have to tar, feather and rip apart any who doesn't share it?
Seriously. They're just opinions, folks.
Yeah seriously, don't understand why people are so upset about someone else not liking the game you like. They have the right to their opinion just like you have the right to yours.
Metacritic is after all a bunch of non-professional reviews which means they are mostly subjective opinions. If you can't stand that then dont look at the site.
So I can choose to trust an average based on the subjective opinion of hundreds of people - or those that are influenced by money and professional relations with the game creators (professional reviews).
I'll take the user reviews thanks - case in point Dragon Age 2.
I didn't say you cant trust the average. I personally find the average on meta critic useful as an indication. I was merely saying that the people who are so up in flames about the average to realize that it is just the opinion of a bunch of non-professional people and should not be interpeted as anything else.
Also was not making any points about the validity of professional reviews, that complete depends on what the source of the review is. This site, due to all excessive ads, I would not trust so much but there are other sources which do not rely as much on ads for income so I tend to trust those more.
I'm still enjoying the game, but the more I play, the more I find wrong with it.

i think i was overly hard on the game in terms of my personal opinion.
i will just say personally, i find it lacking in every aspect. I feel like it's a single player rpg. I know swtor focused on the the story. To be honest , the game really is around a 7. It has a great story, and for what the game is, it is above average.
this game is a hold your hand , linear game. I remember when episodes 1,2,3 came out, i had the same frustration. I grew up on star wars and was hugely put off by the new ones. Lucas was skipping the older generation and trying to get the younger crowd with "jarjar" etc.
i think that swtor is a game reaching out to the younger crows. Us older gamers, want a challenge, a social community, crafting, more of a "thinking" game. More of a "sandbox". Bioware specifically stated that it would never be a sandbox. I blame myself for expecting this to be a "grown up" game. It's appeal is to the younger star wars fans, and the younger crowd in general. Not saying older gamers will not like this, just this older gamer.
No but I agree with you. In general older gamers tend to require games with more substance and mental challenge where as younger audience, again in general, want more action and phew phew. This game, and many other themeparks, are more phew phew.
You could create a themepark which is more mentally challenging and deeper crafting, EQ 2 has the latter, but for some reason that is not happening. Probably because the over 30 year old crowd is much smaller than the sub 20 year old with the 20-30 year old being something inbetween the two.

I tend to agree. It doesn't deserve a 0, but it also doesn't deserve a 10.
My gripe with people like the '10' reviewer, is that they are reviewing what they game 'can be' -- 'The Devs will obviously fix that soon'. Imo, you review the game for what it actually is, today, not what you think the Devs are going to do -- nor what the devs may say they will try to do.
And the rebuttle to criticims about missing elements, or incomplete elements, tends to be emotionally based (name calling, have faith, I dont care about that feature so no one else should, etc), rather than demonstrating how the game is superior without those features.

Of course, I expect this when I start playing any game so it's not really a surprise when it happens.

How on earth CAN'T you see that when you play a competitve game you obviously want to see the scoreboard while you're playing?... there isn;t a single competitive game that puts you up against players that doesn't allow you to see the scoreboard during gameplay... TAB... why they would not put that in TOR is beyond me...
Maybe they weren't that experienced making proper multiplayer games?...

I'm not terribly competitive, and I sometimes like to see the scoreboard in matches. I don't generally pull it up until the end of the match, but I could see how someone might want to see it during a match. It could fall into the spectrum of things that Bioware didn't think was important enough to implement right away.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I was so hyped over swtor, i was talking all my friends into playing it, i had like 5 accounts signed up for their beta testing... and then the worst thing that could have happened, happened... i was accepted into beta. Create character (not happy about how i hate how everyone looks) ... first thing i do in the game pick up quest, kill 10 bad guys... Turned it off and never played it again.
most are enjoying it. i palyed beta for 6 months and trust me when i say the game is FAR better than 6 months ago... hell its way better than a couple weeks ago!
I would not say that is an stellar accomplishment, but rather avoiding obvious failure. Any game that has not improved in the last 6 months of beta, is likely to crash and burn.
An accomplishment would be seeing the game being worlds better 3 months from now, after release.

how can you complain about this? why do you need to see your score? heres what happens when u put up scores.. people tend to try to get the best score.. they forget about trying to win, they just want the best score..
"omg, i need to get my healing score up", "omg, i need to do more damage", etc.. they will forget about actually trying to win the matches, and worry only about thier score.
i think its good you cant check your score till its over.. This game stops people from stroking thier epeens all the damn time.. if you want damage meters, and scoreboards, and all this other crap.. either wait till they put it in the game, or go play another game.
for those of you that havent played the game, warfronts does have a main scoreboard to show who is winning and losing, but it doesnt show a personal score till the very end of the game. At that time it shows everyones score

" and 3 months from now they have already stated on forums and web videos that the coming months will bring more change and advancements....... BTW i was at the launch in austin texas with BW employees there game designers and what not and they even told everyone there that the game will have HUGE improvements in the coming months after they recieve more feedback from the vast playerbase

Well as Metacritic has it's BIG flaws, there is no doubt imho that SWTOR is frequently making "love or hate" reactions, so this is no surprise. Most games on metacritic DO have preety balanced user votes / raviews.
Some games do have very mixed and well Swtor is one of those.
I personally know few people that REALLY enjoy Swtor and I also knew few people who really ARE disappointed by Swtor or just plain do NOT like this game at all. So at least by people I know those scores reflects opinions of people I know quite accurately.
Similar thing (but more hate than Swtor is receiving) was with f.e. Dragon Age 2 (which was worse game than Swtor is) - some people really enjoyed this game and some / most thought it is utter crap.
People do seem to be getting a little tense and personal.
Maybe anything worthwhile to be said in this thread already has.

Certainly not a "worst of all" scenario but checking the leaderboard has its uses from a PvP perspective. You can use it to see how is contributing most in kills or heals for focus fire perspectives and who is simply more dead weight or has padded damage numbers that may look big but not really contributing into any worthwhile offense as a whole.
I wouldn't say it is a must have by any stretch of the imagination but checking the board from time to time can serve more purposes than just seeing where your rank is in the battle, match, or raid.

I would not say that is an stellar accomplishment, but rather avoiding obvious failure. Any game that has not improved in the last 6 months of beta, is likely to crash and burn.
An accomplishment would be seeing the game being worlds better 3 months from now, after release.

This is a prototypical mmorpg thread taking place in ~1980.

The 0 review is just as bad as the other one, any idito that had any interest in teh game could have easily found out it was going to be like wow, its like driving a pickup truck then complaing afterwords that the salesman sold you a pi9ck up truck.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
how can you complain about this? why do you need to see your score? heres what happens when u put up scores.. people tend to try to get the best score.. they forget about trying to win, they just want the best score..
At that time it shows everyones score
i guess i quote myself here "hell its way better than a couple weeks ago!
Tor is a wow(and themepark) clone. Undeniable.
For some, a wow clone is a good thing. {mod edit}
the best blog of the net
Hmm, it seems I've heard that before somewhere. Several times even.

Call a vote: Shut it down? {Yea/Nay}

Does that make me terrible? Probably...
Enter a whole new realm of challenge and adventure.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
