I'm not opposed to levelling and tiers of gear... but I think MMOs really need to move more toward rpg-style "living" worlds, rather than static npcs with !'s above their heads.
The gap between you can get out of a game like Skyrim vs. TOR... is growing... compared to what a 2004 RPG was vs. WoW - and I think MMOs are going to have to find a way to close the gap to keep players interested. TOR tried... but I think they largely failed with the implementation.
