Star Wars helps.. but I don't doubt they could do equally well... maybe even better with a Mass Effect MMO.
Problem here is the quality of the game itself.
If this exact same game were made by another company... say our former friend Cryptic... it would not get anywhere near the "professional" ratings it does.

But if Cryptic would've made it, they would have created the game within 2 years and it would have nowhere near the amount of content and features like it has now, and definitely nowhere near the quality of the quests. So of course the rating would have been a lot lower too.
A Mass Effect MMORPG, I'd love to see that. With the mechanics used in the ME games, sure, sounds interesting. I think that the ME lore and universe is the 21st century successor of SW's simpler space opera/science fantasy theme anyway.
Would you still play it?, and would this game get so high rating across the boards on all gaming sites and mags?
If it was based on what, hentai porn, hello kitty, my writings when I was 6? Hell yes. Let me phrase you another question, would you watch Lord of the rings movies if they weren't directed by Peter Jackson and not based Lord of the rings books at all. Jeesh trolls there days.

The point is that the name of Bioware carries some clout with it, with the magazines/sites. We saw it with DA2 and it's GOTY rating from PC Gamer.
However much you might like this game... there is no way it's a 93/100.
If some other company had developed this SAME EXACT GAME - I think you would've seen rankings in the low 80's or similar.

Yes I would.
If the movie was good I would have bought the exended version if not i would have let it at.
We're talking about a product that would come out completely different from TOR. So, sure, I'd try it. I try every MMO, I don't really see the point in this particular speculation. If you're trying to determine if TOR's success is solely due to Bioware and Star Wars, I think you'd have a compelling argument with the correct factual backing. I do believe most gamers just play for the "fun" though, which is a difficult thing to define on an individual level, and varies wildly from person to person.

But you also see rankings in the low 80's now as well for SWTOR, just like rankings in the '90s. The same for Rift and Aion, both games that I don't consider to be extraordinarily special, still those games also have some rankings in the '90s even without big IP or developer behind them, so I don't see why SWTOR wouldn't have had the same even if it wouldn't have had the name SW or BW. Where I think the name Bioware and the IP Star Wars make a difference is in the amount of people playing, not in the ranking: SW and Bioware makes it that more people are interested in giving the game a try.
The SW IP isn't all that great anyway; its strength is the time in when it came out. The wold had never seen anything like it which is probably why it took everyone by storm and carved a perpetual soft-spot in the hearts of millions for decades to come.
BioWare has been losing their touch -- DA2 anyone? So I doubt the "BioWare" pull would make me pick it up either (if it wasn't a SW game).
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
Yes.An MMO with Bioware's storied style would have appealed to me. Mass Effect Universe would have been cool. As long as it was kept with a Sci-FI slant. If it were a Dragonage MMO I doubt I would have been interested . The fact that it is Star Wars does add to the appeal...but especially because it was during the time of the Old Republic. If it was during the time of any of the movies I would have eventually played but not been quite as interested.
Would you still play it?, and would this game get so high rating across the boards on all gaming sites and mags?
The problem with your thread is that it is basically saying "If this game wasn't this game, would you still like it?". Well, I can't answer that question since it makes no sense to me, but I can tell you that I am still having fun playing THIS game. The hype created by the name and the developer may have helped get me interested but it is the game itself that has to keep me interested and so far, it is doing the job pretty well.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Actually it would make not much difference in my opinion, I dont feel that much StarWars anyway but maybe because I like more Rebells vs Imperium than Republic and I dont get sucked into the world that much due to these lifeless interaction. I want an mmorpg I can enjoy and StarWars is of course nice, but at the end just a theme, content is important and immersion.
It would probably not get the same rating, a lot of games got released with a StarWars theme but only a handfull are actually good.

By this reasoning, every single music group out there is a washed up has been and every person in any kind of leadership position for more than a year is a worthless idiot. Glad I don't live in your world. Seriously, one "good" game instead of the normal "great" game does not make for a company "losing their touch".

Yes it does if they don't make a great game to return to their true form.
Using that band analogy -- if they never again produced a GREAT record, I would rightly dismiss them as a one-hit wonder.
PS. I just wanted to add that for many (not me), Dragon Age was a good game and not the great that Baldur's Gate was. So using your analogy, the band has simply made a string of good games now. So they are certainly losing that touch.
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I think this is more a case of wishful thinking. I consider myself to be in my right mind, and compared with the issues and problems I've seen with the launch of other MMO's, SWTOR's issues are - in my experience - nowhere near 'massive issues' as some claim/want it to be. But that's how I see it, I'm not ignoring the issues and annoyances that are present, but I've been around MMO's and MMO launches for over 10 years now and seen a lot, and often a lot worse.

To stay in the analogy, if they produce a great hit, but one that you didn't like, then it's still a great hit and band. DA2 may be merely good, but ME2 was still awesome, SWTOR so far is very enjoyable to many people although its longterm appeal will show in the upcoming months, and ME3 has a high chance of being on the same quality level as ME and ME2 were. If that's the case, then it should be equivalent to a band that had great hits, then a lesser hit, and then great hits again.

Can't argue with that.
That said, it works both ways. What may not be gamebreaking to you will be a deal breaker to someone else. The fact that different people play for different reaons must be respected.
When a game fails to be satisfying to a large majority of people on an objective level, then it is a failure. SWTOR seems to lack a lot of features on an objective level.

I think you need to reread what I wrote before posting, mkey.

Doubtfull this game would have gotten 1/4 off the attention or sales without BioWare and SW names attached.
You know.. there was a reason why EA paid 700 MILLION dollars for BioWare eh? The name itself is gold.
Yes I would.

For once this is not a baiting it is a honest question if you lable it baiting then its within your rules to lock or delete it..

Not a chance.

Noone would really care. They are are taking advantage of a popular ip to make money off of it.

The market will take care of itself. It always does.
I don't enjoy it, but I don't enjoy Lady Gaga either. I don't care for Twilight movies but they are wildly poplular.
