The thing that I find funny is that people complained hard about AOC not having full voice over after Tortage. Now they have SWTOR which is completely voiced over and they bitch because it has too much voice over and only the main story quest line should have been voice over. I mean, isn't that the exact what AOC does with its main story? I guess the grass is always greener lol.
As for it being innovative I don't think it really is and I also don't think it's all that great. All they did was take the exact setting from Dragon Age and Mass Effect and add it their MMO. Not like they reinvented the wheel here.
That is just my opinion on the matter of course.
I don't think people are complaining about the voice overs but rather the lack of anything innovating/good beside the voice overs.
I mean if you remove the voice acting and class story line from this game then what do you have left?
So you visit a forum where strangers are posting their opinions about games and yet at the same time you dont care about their opinions? mmmkay so why are you visisting this forum?
Your last response seem to indicate to me that it is just to argue with people for no reason but winning.
So other people are posting their opinions about games but you are here to engage in flamewars with people and "win", did I get that right?
But to answer your question, which probably wasn't a question, yes I do care about opinions of strangers about gaming. Otherwise I would not be visiting this forum. Doesn't mean I agree with all of them though.
I like to stay informed about what is going on in this particular video game genre.
That, and there used to be some great posters and postings on this site - truly amazing community, and I miss that.
Sometimes there still is, but it's rare. Really sadly, is there is no where else to go but MMORPG.com.
Most of the time is spent slogging through the garbage, but in the end that can be fun too just for the slight chuckle a person can get from pointing out the obvious to an oblivious stranger.

same linear theme park dozens of other companies offer? Oh and people still pay to play them too!
Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.

Exactly, hence why people say it is not innovative. I mean you can eat the same type of cake that many times before you get sick of it.

yeah but people refuse to back anything but Theme Parks... I understand what people are saying but I made peace with the fact that I'd be playing Theme Parks for many years when WoW hit 12 million subs. I had some fun adventures in AoC, Warhammer, Aion, Rift, SWTOR and a dozen others but... everytime I spent my money on something outside the theme park genre I found myself greatly disappointed... Darkfall (Hackers/Exploiters/No skillcap/ Macroers) Mortal Online (rofl... alpha?) Xyson (no...) I mean... these companies literally designed their games like they don't have any experience in the genre and have no idea what people want. 2012/2013 looks promising soo maybe the action based theme parks or hybrid sandboxes will add life to a stale genre.

So we've had to significantly clean up this thread due to topic derailment. At this point, I'd like to ask that you please remain on topic. This thread is not for discussing the state of the MMORPG.com community at large. If you'd like, feel free to create such a thread in the Off Topic section.
Continued off-topic posts will result in the locking of this thread (and possibly action taken against your account). Thanks guys!

I would call the fully voiced storylines an innovative. They alone may not prevent you from quitting the game, but they're something we've never seen in an MMORPG before. A more interesting discussion is how innovative the story-based progression actually is. If you look at most modern instances in World of Wacraft, there are plenty of story elements flying around; however, you always maintain control of your character because rather than being the focus of the storyline, you are simply watching the story unfold. Of course, there was also Guild Wars which I think is closest in terms of SW:TOR story-based progression.
Originally posted by Valentina Fully voiced storylines & dialogue/player choice IS innovative IN THIS GENRE. Never really been done before, adds a hell of a lot more innovation and immersive nature to the game, and is something that is pretty much going to be required for future MMO's that claim to be "MMORPG's" in order to be taken seriously and not seen as lazy, boring, and outdated. Sorry, OP! It takes nothing away, or harms no part of the MMO genre, as all it does is take the system that already exists, put's voice overs and decisions into the players hands, it eliminates nothing and enhances everything.
Don't believe me?
Guild Wars 2 Copernicus/Amalur project And several other newly announced MMO's last year that make up the entirety of anything on anyone's radar over the next few years all have these features to varying degrees. Case closed!
Not being done in one genre before doesn't make it innovative. Fully voiced has be done, and in a very similar way, in other titles, notably Bioware's own. So it isn't innovative, not by a long shot. There is a pervasive and annoying misconception on these boards about what that word means.
Of course, the numbers and the costs don't make any sense. Firstly, it doesn't cost as much as you seem to think to maintain an MMO. Second, 1M subscribers is not needed, and Bioware has said as much.
Besides your argument having no logical flow or merit, all of your points are patently false.

Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Well even if they never have before just because something has never been done doesnt mean its innovative. Putting sh*t on a stick and calling it a barbie doll has never been done it doesnt make it innovative. By the way, if it is..i just created an innovative idea in less time than it took me to write this note.
Seems like you're working under the assumption that innovation is always good and super awesome.
So when you see innovation you dislike, this conflicts with your idea of what innovation is and you think it's not innovation -- even though it is.
At least that's certainly how the OP seems to be approaching the topic.
Meanwhile innovation is innovation, and voiceovers are innovation.
Even I don't feel voiceovers are that amazing in TOR, but innovation is innovation.

According to a course I took in university that was explicitly about innovation in business...
Innovation invovles producing something new, or finding a new application for something that already exists, that hasn't already been done before and it must also add value.
The question is whether or not fully voiced over content added meaningful value or not. The answer seems to be no from what people have been saying about the voiced over side-quests. As for the voiced over class/main quests having value, sure, but that's not anything that hasn't already been done by SWTOR's predecessors... hence, no innovation.

not exactly what I am saying but I think its fair to say that when most people talk about innovation its not something like 'we added seat belts to the back seat that you had been asking for for 5 years' as really being very 'innovative' if you get my drift.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
If an MMORPG is being touted with extensive voiceacting as a selling point, I'd say that title has some big, terrible issues. All the time, money, and resources wasted.

Doing is just one part of what games are about. Games are for entertainment, and many people find good stories entertaining. Maybe the people you know just dont like to read (or are possibly not very good at it...I notice a lot of that particularly in the US).
Story may not be everyone's thing, just like PvP isn't everyone's thing, or crafting isn't everyone's thing. So maybe its not your group of friends' thing. Thats in no way an accurate representation of everyone.
Hey! I'm from the U.S., and if I was able to read what you typed, then I would be offended.
Despite being illiterate, I don't really care for voice-overs. Seeing as I don't recognize most of the vocabulary in the story segments anyway, they might as well not even be there. They're just wasting my valuable time that could, instead, be used for collecting welfare checks.

Funny how some of you created your own version of innovation.
Next week will be back on how dumb down MMO's are.
I swear Badspock and Axehilt continue to nail it on the head.
