I'm dead tired of gear progression grinds and quick little BGs that feed into the gear grind. That's the solo-questing equivalent of real PVP. PVP isn't supposed to be a solo pursuit for loot w----s. Good team work and having the better strategy and tactics is what fun PVP is all about.
Best game ever for that was DAoC and we've been waiting a long time for someone to improve on that. From all I see this could be it.
People who need to grind the uber PVP loot so that they can be 100% better than those just starting their own gear grind and gank them all day long may just not like this game... so sorry.

Try not to assume anything with this one, it's going to be amazingly fun and with Arena.net normally being ahead of the curve this will be one hell of a game for PvP and PvE.. Stop thinking of this game as just another new mmo on rails...
Your making alot of assumptions yourself.
(And seen it!)
Maybe :P but at least they are positive..

Actually had to make a new account. But thanks for geing so kind. Not sure what I did to you in some past life.
Nothing at all. It just seems suspect that there is a swell of anti-GW2 sentiment on the boards, where original posters don't seem to have familiarized themselves with the game despite the plethora of information being provided.
Also, I love the movie "Troll Hunters." And bridges.
Ishan I hope you are atleast listening and not trying to argue, you created this thread to learn right?

Yes and a few people have actually answered my questions with reasonable responses. Not sure why everyone gets so uptight about things though amazing how emotional people are about an unreleased game.
And sorry just throwing out a number to give the sense of an overwhelming majority.
Well ill be honest I havent really looked too deeply into this game so I may very well be missing something.
From what I read though when playing battlegrounds (or whatever gw2 happens to call them) all players have the same access to the exact same gear, skills etc. This to me is kind of concerning. I pretty much strictly PvP in mmo's. Pretty much the only reason I play is that I like to spend time working on my char so that I can go pvp. If theres no incentive to get gear and improve my character I find it hard to believe it will keep me intereseted in the long term.
I realize there will be world pvp and such, but lets face it an a modern day mmo after the initial leveling phase the bulk of your time pvping is in battlegrounds.
I also realize that with experience I will get better and have a competitive edge of players in that sense, I just worry there wont be much incentive or ways to work on your character to gain a bit of an advantage.
To me thats just the way it should go, the people that work hard for the gear deserve the advantage it gives.
I myself made the grind to Warlord back in Vanilla WoW and man it was fun and really added another element meeting up with very powerfull players. Im now more of a casual gamer, play a few hours when I can squeeze it in (family, life, work, you know) but I still feeel the same way. Its fun for me to face someone more experienced with better gear, it makes me better and gives me something to work towards.
Honestly I think thats what plagues alot of mmo's people are such whiners when it comes to balance. Games need a sense of randomness and hell even a bit of unfairness at times.
Also I think people are fooling themselves if they dont think that 95% of the players will be wearing the EXACT same gear and skills. People always fall into that cookie cutter mentality. Is this games battlegrounds seriously going to be filled with classes all wearing identical gear?
Not the game for you then im afraid. This isnt a gear grind at all and as such you should stick to one of the hundreds of other MMO's which cater to your vision of unfair PvP and Epeen stroking.

I guess thats what it comes down to huh.
Believe me im not that guy out ganking lvl 10's with my lvl 80. I actually very much like a good fight. It just dosent feel like an mmo if everyone just chooses gear out of a screen. Thats why I play to get gear to pvp with.
I kind of want both gear and ranking progression. Meh maybe this one just isnt for me.
Meh starting to really hate the homoginization in mmo's its getting really pathetic.
GW2 is as far from the homogenization tree as one can fall in the Themepark model of the genre. I find your statement is not suited toward the discussion of a GW2 game.
Wow you sure are taking this personally. So my opinion that every class using the exact same skills, gear is homoginizing? How is that not accurate?
Did I say the whole game was homoginized ... no. Calm down, im sorry I deeply offended you.
I didnt take it personal and I dont see how my psot could be construed as such.
Homogenization is games like SWTOR/RIFT/TERA/AION/WAR/LOTRO doing the exact same thing as WoW with just a few minor differences.
Every class might might use the same skills but the trait system and peoples personal preference will set them apart. Gear is the same, Would I rather have everyone wear the same Tiered gear with the same exact color scheme like in WoW....You know a level capped Mage looks just like every other level capped Mage (prior to transmorg) But in GW2 you can wear the suit of armor that best suits your style and thats not to mention the innovative color dye system. So in conclusion your statement is about as accurate as a goats ass.

Here's a thought: how about playing a game because the gameplay is actually fun and enjoyable and not endlessly chasing a carrot on a stick so you can fight lesser-geared opponenets and inflate your sense of self-worth because you "owned" them with your awesome gear?
I'm really looking forward to playing a game where the reliance isn't on gear and people play because the game is actually fun.

Perhaps so. There is a paradigm shift going on here. If you read some of the previews released today people are not only enjoying things they didn't like in previous MMO's they are enjoying them more than the things they did like in previous MMO's.
Maybe you will enjoy it or maybe you will miss the gear treadmill of other titles. From what I am seeing GWII is anything but homogenous. This isn't about making things easy or even simpler. It is about getting rid of boring repatative grinds to go from +1789 sword of bollocks to +1793 sword of bigger bollocks. Skill alone will determine outcomes. Dosen't appeal to me but there you go. Now WvW thats a different matter entirely

Great thread Ishan-shade. Gave you a shout-out (and response to your question!) in our latest blog entry.
EDIT: Also, let's please keep this thread constructive and civil. Whether you like it or not there are MANY MMO gamers who are going to be thinking about this sort of thing as they learn more about the game and this thread is a great opportunity to have a mature and hopefully insightful discussion.
@Ishan-Shade: You say you want the sense of progression that gear grinding gives you, but then completely ignore WvW as the answer to your "concerns". Instead, you look at the arenas and ask, "Where is the sense of accomplishment?"
Well, Ishan, the answer is that you can either play the structured PvP and enjoy it for its own sake, play WvW and enjoy it for its own sake, or resign yourself to some other game. This game isn't your standard MMO, it doesn't follow the rules that other MMOs follow, so stop expecting a WoW clone. WoW was far from perfect or ideal.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
You can't seperate a game from a certain aspect, a certain feature. You must first experience the whole product to get a glimpse of what its possible.
Your imagination, my imagination lacks of the power to fully conceive news information about a game and translate it into what you and I call an idea of a game. You can mirror this thought to anything you try to imagine and have never experienced before. You are simply not able to. You can easily see this for yourself when you once in a while catch yourself saying "oh wow, that was wonderful! I didnt know how beautiful this is in the first place." Yes, and why is that? Because you did not even try to imagine how it could have been...
You get the idea. We have to learn again to soak up a new title unpretentious!
I play games and MMOs since Meridian 59 and bought game magazines since... 1997 somewhat. I mostly read articles about games before I bought them. Except one major title which I have always in my mind and kept a certain mind-set for future habbits: I DID NOT READ any news about World of Warcraft back there, NOT ANY REVIEWS (of course you can exclude WoW and insert any other title - I just decided for myself to do it with this one). And what was the result? I had an open mind. I had zero prejudices. I did not compare the journalists thoughts with mine and came to no conclusion of how much I will like this game or not. What nonense!
Same I did with D3. I only hear here and there that people are upset about the constant changes. Well, I do not know what has been changed, I will recieve the full and complete product ready to enjoy.
Dont listen to reviews that much guys! Follow your own way. And more important: Allow yourself to be surprised more often
Personally, I never "needed" the prospect of material advantage over my competitors to keep me playing PvP in any game. There is a HUGE PvP community in Starcraft, and you never earn any advantages in that game no matter how long you play. IMO, learning from your mistakes and becoming a better player is reward enough.
In addition, I think that we, meaning computer/video gamers, have become almost "brainwashed" into this mentality that we shouldn't do something unless we get a "prize." RPGs have been using these prize mechanics (progression) forever, and now even FPS games do it. In fact, to a larger extent EVERY game does it nowadays with achievement systems.
The funny thing is that we, as humans, don't NEED this constant positive reinforcement to do something. Just look at sports. Tons of people love playing sports and yet you don't get awarded with better "throwing range" whenever you score a touchdown in football. The game is in and of itself a reward.
Honestly, I think we should all take a good hard look at our hobbies, and determine if we spend our leisure time doing something we really enjoy, or if we are doing something we don't enjoy in the pursuit of "prizes." Because there is actually a word for doing something you don't enjoy to receive some kind of reward...
Well ill be honest I havent really looked too deeply into this game so I may very well be missing something.
From what I read though when playing battlegrounds (or whatever gw2 happens to call them) all players have the same access to the exact same gear, skills etc. This to me is kind of concerning. I realize there will be world pvp and such, but lets face it an a modern day mmo after the initial leveling phase the bulk of your time pvping is in battlegrounds.
Battleground PVP is completely disconnected from PVE/WvW. You don't level up to do battlegrounds, nor does participating in battlegrounds give your PVE character XP. You will not be leveling up in battle grounds.
I also realize that with experience I will get better and have a competitive edge of players in that sense, I just worry there wont be much incentive or ways to work on your character to gain a bit of an advantage.
It's all about skill, smarts and your ability to coordinate with your team mates, rather than how successful you've been at grinding gear.People will play to have fun and for the thrill of competition. There will be casual matches, but there will also be formalized tournaments. Do people play sports to earn better gear? Of course not. People will play battleground based Competative PVP for the fun, the thrill and the sense of competition.
To me thats just the way it should go, the people that work hard for the gear deserve the advantage it gives.
Much better for people to work hard at being better players, rather than working for artificial bonuses so they can pretend they are better players than they really are because of some gear advantage.
Now you can jump in with your smarts and your skills as a player and know that the other person doesn't have an artificial handicap just because he plays the game more often than you do. Maybe some people dislike this because it puts the responsibility for winning/losing more on them as a person, rather than providing excuses that the other guy has better gear?
Honestly I think thats what plagues alot of mmo's people are such whiners when it comes to balance. Games need a sense of randomness and hell even a bit of unfairness at times.
The human element is all the randomness that is needed. Gear grinds are for whiners who would otherwise suck at PVP, even though they play it more than other people.
Also I think people are fooling themselves if they dont think that 95% of the players will be wearing the EXACT same gear and skills. People always fall into that cookie cutter mentality. Is this games battlegrounds seriously going to be filled with classes all wearing identical gear?
Yes, this is exactly the case. Your gear and level in CPVP are completely equalized. You can earn new armor looks, so you won't have to look like every other newb out there, but the stats are the same. Everyone is level 80 in CPVP, with all traits and skills unlocked. There will be different builds of skills and trait distribution, so there will be variety when facing different players of the same profession, but everyone has equal access to this versatility. The metagame will be an important element of the competition, but as particular builds become popular, there is always the ability for builds to be developed to counter those builds.
Dedicated PVP teams will always be looking for the best combination of group builds, skill builds and strategies for victory.
I hate bringing up WoW, but the OP sure sounds like a WoW player looking for his WoW clone. Its not here!!!

Sounds like if the world pvp zones work out well it could end up being a blast. Im always reserved with world pvp type stuff though, it can be the hardest thing to get right I think sometimes as human nature will always bring out the worst in people as they look for loopholes or easy ways to exploit real world pvp.
If done right with a good community world pvp is amazing and truly fun. It can offer what I like, some randomness, some unfairness, some hilarity and some epic fights.
Looks like I have to spend a bit more time reading up on things, this certainly helped though.
I like the fact people will be same level with PvP since then it wont be about the gear but how well you play the class. I don't know guess I would rather it be an even fight rather then a roll over. I also agree that vanilla WoW PvP was fun because you actually had to work very hard to obtain the gear unlike today where it's obtained with little effort.
