Guild Wars 2: One Million Beta Sign Ups Tell the Tale

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

NCSoft and Arena.Net have let us know that beta sign ups for Guild Wars 2 have nearly reached the one million mark in a mere 48 hours. That's pretty impressive even for one of the most talked-about games set to release in 2012!

Congratulations to the Guild Wars 2 team!

your chances are 1 in a million. if there are 1 million sign ups then only 1 of you, that leaves a chance of 1 in a million.

I'm guessing with a very generous beta size of maybe 10 000, you'd have a 1 in 100 or 1% chance to be given a beta key.

note the wording was 'beta events'.  I would not be surprised if these are very short stress tests where they let in a couple hundred thousand.

That's pretty much to be expected and they even said as much. They're supposedly doing what they did with GW1, where there were beta events that lasted from Friday to Sunday, every other weekend or so. They did that again here with the GW2 press beta, I expect that's what people can expect of the public betas as well.

As for the number, you're probably right, but considering this is just people signing up for the beta and not even release, they'd probably be smart to let as many people in as they can to see what their servers are truly capable of.

Not at all surprised.  I usually get into all the beta's I've wanted to... except TSW... *shakes fist* at least not so far.

1.5 million signed up for SWTOR and that flopped, doesn't really mean anything imo. Just means more people are interested in the MMO genre compared to 5 years ago.

Your chance to get into the beta is hardly one in a million.

Your system specs that you entered in will matter mostly. Those who have very high end or low end systems I think will have an increased chance of acceptance into the beta.

That may however depend on who applied at the end of the day. If, for example, they expect 10% of people playing to be using a 8800GTX or lower and only 5% of the beta applicants have that then those guys are going to stand a higher chance, likewise for other 'bandings'.

So, they didnt reach 1 million in 48hours and are now extending it signups. I wonder if it is to hit 1 million, or was it to try in funnel as many into the 48hr window originally to generate some bragging rights.

Every serious MMO vet knows sign up numbers are nothing but hype.  Aion sold like hotcakes and is now F2P this spring.  The industry is now geared towards hyping then milking as much money out of a game as possible.  Not saying GW2 is going to fail  at all but  ArenaNet is still a business and therefore their main interest rests with the money in your wallet, not changing the industry who's models certainly making people rich as is.

i am not surprised!they were almost neck to neck to wow prior to announcing gw2!1 million in 48 hour for a beta?ouch!i sure hope they have a balancing system like they had in aion cause i dont want to face server imbalance!

I agree any hyped up MMO gets a million beta sign up these days. Aion was another best example and it is now goign F2P.

SWTOR flopped?.... please enlighten me. I thought 1.7 million active subs was pretty good.

I agree with you though, in the sense that a million beta sign ups is not a sign of success. It IS a sign of interest though. GW2 looks to be great and I signed up for sure.

that though however they take computer specs so it'd actually take 10 computers.
