No, it wasnt like that in GW1. You could click on someone to trade with them, and it worked fine. I dont understand why they are doing this and I reckon it will get changed fairly rapidly. If you have to run to a mailbox everytime you want to trade with someone then its really going dampen the economy. Also, you wont be able to give heals/pots/etc to others in your group which is just silly. If its a problem with WvWvW then they can just turn off trading in the mists.
The only reason I can think of for them doing this, is to try to control gold sellers, but its a pretty extreme measure!
What do you have to trade with other players?
Think about it...
No health pots, no stamina pots, no buffs because they all come from boons/conditions which are based on skills.
So about the only thing is trade skill items like mats and armor/weapons etc.
Kind of makes sense to have to use mail system and/or market (AH) system for mats/items.
I haven't heard anything about the game having consumables.
Without consumables, only thing to trade are items and crafting mats.
I think everyone has missed the key problem with this, and this is the first real negative I have come up with in the game...
Sending mail is perfect for:
1) giving away gear
2) selling gear
Sending mail is not good for:
3) trading gear
Think about it... I send you mail and you pick it up and don't send me back my item in return... now what? Do I file a GM request? I can send mail and they can receive it... no reciprocity. I can send mail COD, they can give me money. I cannot trade this nifty doohicky of the thingamajig for that random weapone of fiery death...
Great point. I guess we'll just have to be extra sure we can trust the person we're trading with.

Dude, why would you trade the uber nifty doohicky of the thingamajig for that useless weapone of fiery death? According to GW2 item database the doohicky is far superior. Noob!
GW2 "built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind" 1) Cash->Gems->Gold->Influence->WvWvWBoosts = PAY2WIN 2) Mystic Chests = Crass in-game cash shop advertisements
I'm really trying to see how this is a problem here.
If two players are logged in at the same time, and standing in front of each other, and wanting to trade two items then the process of mailing each other is the same as if it was a trade window.
Any other scenario this is better. 1 player isnt logged in, 1 player is anywhere else in the world, 1 player is on their way travelling to the other. 1 person went afk while you are waiting for them to click trade because you were traveling to them.
More often then not trades were done via the mailbox system anyways.

There will actually consumables, otherwise what would be the point of a Cook. But in the end the system, plus the Marketplace will fulfill all the needs of player trading. Well at least once ArenaNet puts a C.o.D (Cash on Demand) option in the mail system.
I am personally glad it is gone. People tend to annoyingly open up a trade window with something, either to just show something expensive or hoping you would bid for whatever junk.
When i give something away to a guildie i will just mail it anyways.
Same.
For people saying this will make trade difficult. Why is it any more difficult to sell your what's it on the marketplace and buy your fiery axe on the market place too? It really isn't hard. Not to mention I think it will help prices as people will have to be more competitive with their pricing. I for one am glad the marketplace will take place of the current system which is a scrolling nightmare trying to find the item you want at the price you are willing to pay. Then having to LOOK at the item in a trade window to make sure they have it before you actually buy it. These problems will now be gone as will the random windows popping up.
Seems like every thread has cash shop hate. If Anet sold I Win buttons in their cash shop fair enough, but thus far they haven't done this. And I'll eat my shoes (real ones) if they do it in GW2. They sell vanity things (clothes), character and storage slots and things you would get in the game eventually if you weren't lazy (skills, pet unlocks). I've bought the clothes myself because they are cute. You don't have to buy them, you don't have to like them. As for the stuff you are too lazy to do, that's up to you too. I prefer doing it the old fashioned way. But that's not everyones cup of tea.

What the heck? what games have you played? you seem to me like a person who soloed a lot LOL.
The scenerios you mentioned are only a few out of many that places a high demand on face-face trade.
You can always buy the "Awesome Portable Mailbox With Dancing Chipmunk Miniature Pet" out of the cash shop for ten bucks!
Haha yeah, and mounts too i expect
Mounts would actually be the perfect cash shop item. Complete vanity fluff, and plenty of people would want to buy them. Just like skins in League of Legends, they would net a ton of money and would not impact the game in the slightest. Of course, like almost any item that makes the cash shop, some players will pobably complain that they don't just come with the standard game.
League of legends is the only f2p game where i constantly use money. I think a big part of that is that they give you an option, you can spend time and get everything except new costume for free or you can spend some money to get it fast
All other f2p games i have tryd has a "spend money or piss off" attitude in theyr cash shop

Precisely. How are they are intending to make your number 3 efficient and safe?
Imagine two strangers wanting to trade item A for item B. If they are forced, to do a "Pay to retrieve item from mail" thing, how can they be sure that the other party will just take the money from selling A, but not pay for item B and just run?
It is of importance that the both item transfers happen simultaneously. There shouldn't be any difference in time like the mailing system seems to suggest.
While I don't find it a MUST HAVE solution I think this has promise.
9 times out of 10 I don't trade face to face if it's anything that can wait. The time I would trade face to face is if someone needs something instantly. And since most times it's not limited in game systems then the face to face is unnecessary.
That being said, I imagine monitoring the mail system for huge cash movements would be incredibly easy and is a two-birds-one-stone approach to ingame gold selling. Think about it. Before if you wanted to monitor you need to monitor the selling on the AH, on all trades, on all mail. That's a LOT of information daily. Far easier for combining the trades and mail into one thing and then have a simple script flag anything above value x.
Just my opinion but I think the haters are blowing things out of proportion. Let's just wait and see how it works. You never know. You might not need to re-invent the wheel but the difference between a wood chariot wheel and a rubber race car wheel is night and day.

Marketplace is used for buying, selling and trading items. For buying and selling, you put a item you wish to sell and set a price, much like Auction House in any other MMO, and for buying you input the item you are looking for and the gold you are willing to give. But what matters in this conversation is the trading - you simply put the item you want to give, and instead of gold price, you put the item that you want to get in return. You "deposit" that item into the marketplace, and when person that wants the trade is found, you get item that you wanted via mail system.

OK, so the mail system is instant and you can use it from your UI which is great, carrier pigeons ftw as someone else said
However, using the marketplace sounds even more complicated. Very longwinded just to trade a peice of gear to a team mate.

If your trading items with your team mate why is it so hard to use the mail sistem? you send him what he wants while he sends you what you want. Now if you dont trust your teammate then i dont know what to tell you.
Also have you forgotten that there are teleporters around the world? and that there are several ones in one city? i would assume one of them is near the auction house so if you are trading him an item for money you just ask what you want to buy in the AH(it works both ways you can auction items and ask for them) and he sells it to you, simple as that.

The problem would most often happen in public groups. I may feel enough connected to a stranger to want to trade their specific item for my item, but I would not trust them enough to do a non-simultaneous trade.
The non-simultaneity of trading through mails and the cumbersomeness of going through markets, sets up a minor paradise for dungeon running scammers.
Doesn't sound like it's that hard to send a mail, write a name and hit send, what's the difference between a mail interface and a trade interface?
To most people myself included to open a trade window with someone is very seamless and easy, doing a whole in game mail while not the hardest thing in the world is not exaclty easier then opening a trade window no matter how you want to spin it.
