$80 for a normal digital download is a high price. The distribution costs are laughable and the supply has no limit lol.
Now, I also think that it is normal having to buy the game. But those price differences are too high if you pay in British pounds or Euro (I don't know the prices in other currencies).

Did you ever hear of the Big Mac index? this shows that the UK is in general more expensive then the USA, and so prices of Games are a bit higher too. On the bright side, sallaries in the UK are much better then in the USA.

On top of that we have prices including 20% sales tax in europe, and the prices in the USA are without any sales tax at all.

So get your facts together and just accept these general facts, that dont have anything to do with Arenanet or the whole game industry.

Exactly.  Almost everything in Europe is more expensive than the US (and Canada) and often by a fairly significant amount.  I don't think people who have lived all their lives in either place understand just how much of a price difference there is.  Hell, even here in Canada we pay more for most items than the US, though, not nealy as much as the Euros do.

I'm wondering if your jobs also pay a lot more.  I mean, I'm living on 8.30 USD an hour at 36 to 40 hours a week and I'm LUCKY to HAVE a job.  So many people here can't find work.  I'm just guessing that jobs in like Sweden, the UK, France, wherever in Europe, PAY more than what the majority of jobs pay here.  In the US you can even have a college degree and be lucky to find a job at a fast food restaurant.  It's pathetic.

Oh....and does this game cost grossly more than OTHER games in Europe or are they ALL high.  And if they're ALL high....what's with the blaming ArenaNet?

Not to bring too much politics into this but I believe most jobs in Canada pay about the same as in the US. I don't know about Europe. I do know that the Canadian economy is probably the strongest in the world right now. We've done much better than the US and Europe the past few years. We tend not to spend as far beyond our means like Much of Eirope does and don't let the financial sectors run wild and free like the US does.

49.99 is a really good deal when you will spend that much for almost any MMO on release and also pay a sub fee. Not shocked at all...quite happy to shell out $50 for what appears to be a really good game.

    info from the link

    https://buy.guildwars2.com/

Every "normal" game I have bought since early 1990's has always been $49.99 retail, compared to 54.95- 69.95 at Wal-Mart  for console games. 49.99 is the standard price for new games for PC no matter if thier single player or MMO's. Most expensive game I have ever bought for the PC was SW-ToR last month at Wal-Mart for $64.97. I'm just happy to hear GW2 is not gonna be like the last game I bought for $64.97.  $49.99 will be the retail price and that is cool considering all the hype A-Net has generated for yet another single player easy-mode MMO.

you commenting on prices in pounds and not dollars :/

Besides GW2 is going to be 59.99 dollars not 49.99 , think you mixing currencies or something

    Oh wow, I am surprised.

I thougth the digital edition was going to be 60 bucks.  Instead its 50.  Far out.  Sounds like a deal to me.

I might spring for the delux edition since thats about what I expected the regular edition to cost anyways.  On a side not Im getting a little tired of people complaining about the cost of the game.  Its not overpriced.  People have spent ten times that amount playing something retarded like Farmville.  I dont know if people were expecting the game to cost $30 or what.   This crap is getting kind of old.

Lol... 8.30 $ an hour... You're lucky if you get 3.50 $ to around 5 $ an hour in europe... Ofcourse it scales up if you get masters degree or PhD... It's funny how everyone outside europe thinks how great we have it... It's a disaster, like everywhere else! Not to mention the prices of gas, oil, electricity, etc. in europe... It's SKYHIGH!

What part of Europe are you talking about, because I don't believe you on the whole.  And if you think supporting a family on 8 dollars and 30 cents an hour is easy in the United States, you're nuts.  I'm not saying other countries are not POORER, but certainly not ALL of them.  The US is going down the debt toilet.  I don't personally have any debt, no credit cards, etc., but the government does.  China OWNS the US.

Don't act like you have it all that bad either.  Obviously we're both affording to play games, are we not?  Pretty good to manage that on 3 dollars an hour, gee....your bread much not cost 3 dollars a loaf, but ours does.

Anyway, enough on politics and my low income.  I still will manage to save and buy this game and I don't think the price is bad for what you're getting.  Unless you're buying games on Bigfishgames.com, then you're paying that much for a game anyway, right?

So what's the complaint again??????  Everyone is so poooooor, yet we're all managing to play games.  I don't think any of us need to be feeling sorry for ourselves, honestly.

As I was saying, lame complaints.  Most games go for around this much and you can beat them in a week.  You're underestimating the value you get for the price in comparison to easy-mode crap on the market.

Lol... It's so awesome when people say I said something I didn't on this forum... It's amazing how often this happens... I live in southern europe but this situation goes for most countries in europe. Where did I say I think you can support a family on 8 dollars in USA... Ofcourse not all of them are poorer, few of them have better economy status (but those aren't even in the EU because they refuse to join - smart people). I stated it's a disaster like everywhere else, ofcourse some countries like greece are the worst case scenario and some like norway are the best case scenario... I'm a student so I don't earn sallary, I got a scholarship so I can save up for the game :D...

I wasn't complaining, I was just commenting on the situation since I live here :D

I'm not feeling sorry for myself or anyone who's buying games, I usually feel sorry for people I give money to on the streets when it's under -15°C outside and they can't even afford a jacket...

Hey Arenanet, how about a buy 1 get 1 half off for our Euro pals?!

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

We don't even know what they'll offer in the cash shop (and the cash shop has nothing to do with ncsoft, it has to do with ANet model - the same as for GW1)...

Tho now when you mention it, I don't recall having a B2P mmorpg game in NCSoft store...

The cost of this game isnt bad, Its in fact in line with every other new video game console, or computer that comes out and sells a box copy.

Agree! People tend to think that companies make games just because they wanna play them and give them out for free. The staffs spend sleepless hours of hard work and do not want anything in return (they don' t need to feed their families and pay their bills like us) just because it is a cool hobby to make video games and share them for free?! Appreciate the Developers for their hard works and pay $50-$60 so that they could keep making awsome games that we all love to play. Oh, same concept with any exspansion packs... if you want to support the Dev than buy the expansions. Simple as that!

    Not really.

Normal price for a new game and this one without any monthly fees. I'd say this is a bargain.

  • st4t1ckst4t1ck Member UncommonPosts: 768

I dont see why you guys are jumping on the people wondering if its overpriced.  In the US it is standard pricing. 60 dollars for a  game these days is standard. but in euro and pounds its 20% more. yes its becase of there government and the vat tax.

Personal end-consumers of products and services cannot recover VAT on purchases, but businesses are able to recover VAT (input tax) on the products and services that they buy in order to produce further goods or services that will be sold to yet another business in the supply chain or directly to a final consumer.

if im reading it right if a company over there buys the game to distruibute it they can recover the Vat tax, which is why you dont pay this much when normally buying games from retailer over there.  But if you buy it from arena net directly they have to charge the vat tax.   when the game reaches your shores im almost positive it will reflect corect prices as around 41 pounds

  • timeraidertimeraider Member UncommonPosts: 865

in holland, games of 60 euros are nothing...now we get GW2 for 50 euros and we get beta acces, 3 days headstart, an item.....im nowhere near sad about the prices..

also..no monthly payment...so will happily support arenanet by buying the game
