I must say that archery really is Teras worst combat style. I tried one and it sucked badly, while the Slayer which I also tried was fun to play.
I usually like to play a ranger but the mechanics felt like they were made for melee and that they added the archer as an afterthought.
I something needs a revamp it is this.
In my opinion ranged in TERA is pretty fun and I usually don't like playing ranged characters. However I still like melee more, as I always have. But I will still play ranged chars more than I did in any other MMO out there.
Lol, I guess that makes sense, people who usually like ranged combat dislike it while people who usually don't like it do...
ha i guess that suggests how "melee" the ranged combat in TERA is

Not really melee just much more active than in other games, that's why I like it. But even then nothing feels like being face-to-face with your enemy with a melee character. Still, I think that ranged classes in TERA are executed pretty well because I like their aiming and the fact that they have to choose between being a bit closer to deal more damage or further to stay safe. (I have played ranger and priest from the ranged classes so far)
The op is the same person who made the post complaining about there being multiple channels in TERA.
Archer in TERA is honestly fun. The max distance is good due to speed debuffs archers can apply. Also, you can equip weapon crystals to increase your own in battle speed. If you could shoot from further back (i dont know archer glyphs, maybe you can) it might be a bit OP and then people would complain etc about that. Archer does infact have a "gap closing" move also, its that jump back shot you aoe shoot at your feet. If you do it backwards it covers a bit of distance.
you comment fairly irrelevant. the point i am making is that ranged combat is very short ranged, making it similar to melee comvat. instead of agreeing or disagreeing and then explainign why, you are telling me essentially to L2p and that other players are ok with it. my TERA "skill" level or what other "fine for plenty of others" is pretty goddamn irrelevant. those 2 factors dont really change the fact the ranged combat is actually not that ranged and not as different to melee combat as it could have been. im a facts person and i like facts, i dont really care for opinions or what "others" think.
To which I respond that it's perfectly relevant. Can a melee class stand 18m away from a mob and deal consistent damage while, if successfully kiting their target, take zero damage themselves? I've seen plenty of vids of people on ranged classes doing this. I've yet to see a single melee class doing this.
Your argument that "ranged is similar to melee" is an exaggeration at best. It's hyperbole. It's demonstrably not based in reality at all.
Since you claim to like facts, here are some.
Fact #1: I'm not telling you to "learn to play". I'm suggesting that you have several options as to how you can approach it. You can adapt to how ranged combat works in TERA instead of fighting against it. You can choose to not play a ranged class if you're not that satisfied with it. Or, you can choose to not play TERA if you can't find any other class that's to your liking. Those are the same options every gamer has when trying something new or different from what they expect or prefer.
Fact #2: TERA is not being made for you. It's being made for anyone and everyone who will/can enjoy its flavor of gameplay.Because you do not like an aspect of it, however strong the dislike, does not mean it's bad or needs to be fixed.
Fact #3: That plenty of others have adapted and/or like the system just fine is relevant when you look beyond yourself and remember that this is a game intended to be played and enjoyed by 10s of thousands of people. Is the entire TERA population crying out in unison for ranged attacks to be made longer distance? Not that I've seen. I've seen quite a lot of the opposite, people saying how ranged combat is pretty fun.
Fact #4: That ranged combat isn't long-distance enoughis not fact. It's your opinion.
Others in this thread have already described how the ranged combat is not much shorter distance than it is in many other games. They've explained how the camera angle makes the distance seem shorter than it is. They've explained how ranged distance is deliberately designed to work on a damage gradient, the closer you are, the more damage you do. So, even if you could stand at 25 meters away and shoot arrows at an enemy, you'd probably want to move farther in anyway to make each shot count more.
You seem to be completely disregarding all of these explanations and clarifications and stubbornly continuing to make the same argument. This brings us to:
Fact #5: Repeating the same argument over and over again, especially when valid counter-explanations are given, does not make you right. It only makes your posts redundant.

Sadly that is the case. However, there's usually a lot more volume involved when it is, from a sizable portion of the playerbase. The OP is honestly one of the very few people I've seen voicing this complaint. It just doesn't seem to be an issue to most people.
But you're right, the most self-entitled seem to have the loudest voices on forums, as a rule.

I something needs a revamp it is this.
It's all preference, tons of people like archers, I don't think saying a class needs revamp because you don't like how it plays is really fair lol. I mean, who likes every class in every game? All the classes in TERA play much differently and that's a good thing, theres something everyone i'm sure would love to play.
- Archer was actually third most rolled class. Not sure if every fact is perfectly accurate but it was made from En Masses data(no I didn't make this).
Archers max range is like 18m. The closer the archer is to its target the more damage he / she will do, sweet spot is around 8m-10m.
hmm, thats kinda strange about doing more damage up close. In Lineage 2 an archer will do less damage the closer he is to the opponnent. This way archers have to stay at range if they really want to do damage.
lineage 2 doesnt really make much sense i guess
Considering an arrow loses velocity the farther it travels, no it does not.
Also lol @ the video you provided above, yes, that is ranged combat from the looks of it, and yes they are close to the mob because mobs move towards you instead of letting you stand at your farthest range and shoot at them.
yeh its ranged for sure (technically), i cant deny that. but thats like saying the music that justin beiber sings is music.
Here...pause at 1:12 when the camera turns to see just how far the archer is from the mob ffs...I don't think that looks like melee combat to me tbh.
Think about the imbalance long ranged combat creates...I don't want to be kited around all day and how fun is ranged combat thats 40 meters away in an action MMO?
You don't want to just spam away on bosses, get in the action.
Also some archer attacks do more damage the closer you are, also couldn't you just address all this in one thread? You keep making threads. x.x
Pretty much that's how i look at it and that's likely why the design gives extra damage the closer you are (on at least some ranged abilities).
I mean my first beta event it was kind of .. what the heck? I was thinking about my Ranger in DAoC... when being up higher actually gave you a range bonus. Top of a level 10 tower there was not really much of any "safe place" around a keep we were sieging. Along with the one RA that gave a 50% range boost and bypassed bubble on a longish cooldown... I could pop someone off the top of a keep from one of the two towers near it.
So at first it was kind of huh... then I just thought about "balance" ... with Tera its more about being active and actually using your abilities. If you time things right etc you can still kite... depending on your class it may be more difficult to not be kited even at 20meters or less...
^^ That's why to me its definitely a bit different than anything I've played... anyway.
I'm just borned for melee, i tried archer and it was fun but every single alt i really want to roll will be melee lol. main a lancer and will roll warrior alt to see exactly how hard it is and than a zerk to satify my dmg needs =P But than again i always have maplestory if i ever feel the need to see big numbers =X (even if my gear sucks XD)

CALM DOWN BRO im just giving an opinion and backing it up with facts. I would have expected a non targetting game to exploit its combat system to the fullest have have ranged combat with arrow drop, long range but instead the game is shorter ranged than tab target mmorpgs .
Feel free to disagree with me if you like (as many people have done) but please dont be ugly. Its alright, i will not singlehandedly cause TERA to change/die. You seem to be extremely insecure about the future of your this game that you like. Clinging on so dearly to things and investing your self esteem in them is not a good behaviour. I critisized a game that you like and you are making me feel as if I kicked you in the nuts.

This is not true man. If you have a look on page 5 (i think) I accepted the range wasnt as short as I thought and it wasnt that bad after someone posted a video showing the side on view of archer combat. It wasnt ideal imo but it was certainly shorter/similar to tab target mmo combat.

It's just that it depends what one considers action...
To me shorter range is more exemplary of what range would be in an "action" MMO. Becuase closer range means you have to be actively a part of the action and at any point you may have to rely on dodge or counters to save your ass from a mob who's AOE or bodyslam comes too close.
Sitting back like I do with my hunter in WoW would just be awful in TERA, I wouldn't even play a ranged class when all the melee classes in the game are that interactive than the archer would just be the same as any tab-target MMO, just sit there facerolling keyboard.

it comes down to whatever floats your boat
long range vs short range essentially comes down to:
-aiming at long range
-compensating for arrow drop
-compensating for arrow travel time on moving targets
VS
-dodging
-countering
-aiming at close range
i prefer longer range combat since there is already so many melee classes with the dodge/counter/block style combat. variety would have been nice in my opinion even if it would have been difficult to balance.
another thing to consider: a game with long ranged combat can also have short ranged combat.
