i agree and disagree. It would have been far better if they had followd trough with theyr original vision.
It might have changed over the many years since i playd last. But the combo system annoyd me. i would have liked it better if you could do the combo befor you hit attack instead of attack then do combo move.
But theyr annoying combo system beats most games. The blood and decap is pretty epic

TERA is pretty close (except the water, AoC water is insane). ArchAge will be.
I enjoyed Age of Conan but can't say the combat was good for me personally. I do enjoy more traditional MMO combat though.
WoW has the best combat IMO. Nothing compares to the fluidity, realistic, on-demand, and simplicity of the combat animations and the quick reaction between key press and the animation firing off.
Dont hate the messenger though, as I think WoW turned into an overall terrible MMO that caters to the lowest common denominator and offers nothing fresh and original. However the Combat system is second to none imo.
AoC was ok, but I greatly dislike the sense of a pause between key press and animation firing off, having to hit 4, 1, 2, 3,ctl 1 and then the ability goes off does not feel natural and takes away any sense of realism for me.

Functionally WoW works, but stylistically its garbage. Why couldnt they ever put some finer combat animations in the game? I watch my avatar and a mob hit each other in turn. Smack....whack....smack....whack. Its garbage. Ive seen kids with toy swords have sweeter looking combat. My 7 year old daughter can fight my son and make it look ten times cooler.
Spells and abilities work as intended, but there's no flare to simple melee combat. I said for years one very very simple fix that could be implimented is increase the rate of dodge, parry, and block across all characters, increase damage done by hits to compensate, and speed it up a bit. Then you have mobs and avatars blocking, and dodging more than they are being hit, and it looks like a real fight.
Whats so hard about that? Id like to see a bit more than that but hell, they never did even that much. Like I said, WoW functions well, but stylistically its absolute garbage. They could have tweaked it and fixed it easily. They just never have made any effort.
The combat is mostly fun in AoC.
It feels a lil' Rock n' Sock'em Robots after extended play due to a lack of knock downs and environment interaction tho'.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Fatalities are pretty good but the arrow system required to do a combo is poor along with directional shielding, dodge, and active block which aside from the arrow game none of them work at all.
MMOs with better combat systems, EQ2, WoW, Aion, Rift, SWTOR, LOTRO. I have been playing Everquest 1 this month, a game with mostely auto attack but the spell system has more depth than any other MMO I have played and the game seems to have WAY more players than age of conan.
So flashy fatalities make up for the meh directional imputs and clunky swinging animations? AoC has so many issues but the point is mute as the developers gave up on this game within the first month or before it was released. I wonder when the players gave up on it, there is little to raid in this game and yet there is no progressive raiding or any worth while PvP. Even if the combat system was not poor, there is not much in the game to use it on.
I have to agree. Nothing else I've played in an mmo can compare to the melee combat in AoC. Although I did enjoy the warrior combat in Tera but AoC still trumps it for me (I think because AoC feels more violent).

I always liked the mechanics, like how heals wouldn't top off a tank instantly and that you really needed two tanks in even regular dungeons and raids you needed like at least 4 or so.
However one thing I hated about hte combat was the direction combo movement thingies. That got on my nerves as it was one more thing to keep track of which I think is pointless. Why oh why must you do a movement combo to kick of a skill or ability? along with how classes were pegionholed in roles. DTs were tanks as was guardians, any classes that had a heal tree were only accepted if healer.
looks nice ,its such a shame that game itself is a torso.

Age of Conan combat was pretty great compared to standard tab target crap. I wasn't a huge fan of how they did the combos(skipping) and I think Tera Online has done action combat better.

Too bad it only works in PVE.
In PVP fights the melee combos never kick in unless your opponent is afk.
It's different, but not really better in the end. I got bored of the game and the combat really didn't do anything to stop that.

You know, what? I actually found DDO combat far more hardcore, you actually had to dodge all those fireballs/bolts/spells/projectiles on hard/elite difficulties instead of just standing still and hitting 3, Q, E, 2 and combo complete. I played a Berserker or whatever Barbarian in AoC for that two to three months, and I did not need to dodge or parry a single attack, I was just there to go all out DPS with two swords, which was just ridiculous bullshit what we call "modern MMO combat", but with a different attack sequence.
A few things about DDO's combat, which are required to be effective and what separates "good gamers" from those who just spam all attacks to targets: 1. Archers have to manually lead targets on an distance. 2. Casters should aim AOE spells, such as fireballs/webs/dusts/darknesses manually for them to be most effective (aim with mouse, press quickbar and the spell is cast where your crosshair is.) 3. Shield-based fighters/peoples should know -when- to block, what to block and what is vulnerable to what. 4. Tumbling/dodging attacks manually, from arrows to heavy melee attacks is wise.
Sure, AOC was beautiful, most of the time, but there were also some horrible graphics around in the game, such as certain monsters and textures... The fatalities sucked to be honest, they were horribly scripted, twitched and looked just bad with the characters sliding/even warping around.

The problem in AoC is that you can makro the chains very easy. Its a huge disadvantegen if you dont do it... and beeing depend on 3rd party tools in a game is crap.

Hummm, AoC is pretty darn fluid, and it is not a cartoon. All combat is in real time, you direct where on your opponent you want blows to land. To me fluid is refering to over all animation quality. AoC still has the most fluid and natural animations to be found in a MMO, not only in combat but through out the entire game.

I did like Conan's combat, I did not like the amount of instancing done though. For anyone who hasn't done it, play the first 20 levels in the game, they're the best.
