Let me assure you... Those decapitations don't happen all the time, but when they do it gives you the most rewarding feel you can think of... No other game can match, the brutality and taunt factor of AoC. People go furious in PvP when you rip their head off and show them the finger after... heheheee....
Meh fatalities were a fun gimmik at first but they soon became boring. The fact that the game jumps around before the fatality begins is what most of the game is like. Standing around as a high level character in tortage and doing quick fatalities just to watch all the smashing of skulls might be fun for some but not for all. This combined with their absolutely stupid sense of what stealth should be like is why I left the game long ago. Being seen in the middle of the night on a full moon thirty feet away by enemies 5-10 levels lower then me in the middle of a jungle with no light sources around for miles was the limit.
The animations for everything were like that jumpy and bouncy like the Q snapped his fingers or something, horses running in for mount and dismount, I just didn't like that sortof animation.

Combat, thats a tough one because it's the "feel" that makes the combat not the combat animations. I will have to say that I've played a lot of MMO's and WoW to me had the best feel. When I cast a spell or "clicking" the spell went off and after a little time i knew what that spell would do, be it heal or dps. I knew if I cast one spell it would do so much or another would that less or more, just a great feel to combat. Animation wise not so great but I'll take that over me spinning around with flashy things. The feel of combat is so important and AoC did not have that. Click to cast something and it seems to lag to do what I want, it's like that in many mmo's today.

Perhaps back in the buggy days, but after TSW's engine upgrades and Dx11 got baked inn. AoC runs the highest quality MMO graphics available fluid and soft like butter.
What game is Dragon Nexus btw?
Do you have a guild in AoC? (join us in Wiccana.. awesome fun in a growing population)

I will check it out again after the TSW engine upgrades to see what changed. I don't think the combat would have changed though. DId you check out any of the games I mentioned? Just look up Dragon Nexus here, there is a review. Its sort of like VIndictus but for younger people.
And thanks for the invite. I'll definitely join in
What other MMO has this sort of viaolent high paced crazy shit for their players.. Noone. AoC definitely has it's place among the AAA MMO's
But that video isn't really about "how combat feels" and is more about how combat "looks".
You can take LOTRO combat (which I don't like) and tack on some fatality shots and it would still be LOTRO combat.
Personally I don't like AoC combat as I find myself watching the arrows as opposed to watching what is on screen.
edit: I will say their animations are beautiful.
Yes of course.. That vid is not about the combat.. It's just a vid from a german kid hacking head of lvl 10 people in Tortage.. But anyways you have to admit it's pretty cool.. gets your blood pumping
Sorry guys.. just have to necro this old keeper of an thread... because I got my fanboyish feelings for AoC back once more. EU and US are now merged into 3 massive servers. Crom is frentic 24/7. Check it out and let the heads roll
AoC dominates all !! (and again my favorite vid of the madness)

yeah it´s strange , I always take breaks from playing the game for a months to three months, then come back and every time I´m blown away how kick ass the combat feels. Must be the fatalities or combos maybe, or the sound, I don´t know but it feels really good like an old hack ´n slash game. Combine this with the epic choral music and there you have the goose bumps.
Everyone who tries it you must play until AFTER Tortage this is where the world really opens up

check this out, Henry X just made a new trailer, this guys AoC videos totally rock!!
Great idea, really failed execution. Playing dance dance revolution every time you use a special just doesn't work long term. Maybe if they had changed the combo each time so you had to pay attention that would have been better. The fact you have to stop to fire off an attack is probably good for PvP but makes combat tilted at best. The concepts behind the combat are great but the execution just needs work.
[Mod Edit] still there is no MMO even being close to looking and feeling as good as AoC. Nothing can be compared combatwise and animationwise. It just rocks. Watch this:
Shame the lore is so bad that it just turned into a poorly devised E-Sport. They should have just called this game something else, and never EVER referred to the Conan universe as envisioned by Robert Ervin Howard. No big deal to most gamers, I know, so even more so the reason as to why this should never have had the name Conan on the box.
Priests of Mitra killing each other in pvp, no real factions, just Iron Age gang bangery. I live in Chicago, I can just turn on the news and see the exact same pvp set up ;p
But, I came from Dark Age of Camelot and I was spoiled

Amen.
To be honest, I enjoyed AOC’s combat for a moment, but after twenty levels, it sure got boring to keep mashing those arrows to do the combos. The strafing and what not (stances? Hop forward for knockback %) felt –very- clumsy, and it became more of a chore than an RPG to enjoy.
For a more interesting combat experience, I still personally hold DDO as my favourite. Why? Because in my honest opinion, the game has best PVE ever, and I do not want to even bother with PVP in my D&D experiences. This MMORPG also features the best ruleset / mechanics used. I mean, no Everquest 2-clone or any other thing like Tera come even close with the freedom of character customization or the like.
Where do we start? Melee? Special attacks are –rare-, there are no magical +30 power strikes (unless you build yourself to focus on such skills.) You however do have combos and different weapon classes have different properties. Standard attacks are handled simply by right clicking or holding the key down. You do not need a target, instead you hit everything infront of you (depending on a weapon, also, weapon reach matters if we go into specific details.)
Ranged? Shooting easy targets is easy; just tab and right click, or point your crosshairs at it and right click. Same applies as above, right click can be held down, ranged special attack skills are rarer than melee (every class gets a basic trip and sunder attempts for melee), but there are certain tricks to being a good archer. Example: Arcane archers can shoot spells along with arrows and other archers must know when to activate their different short duration modes/stances for best effectiveness.
But the ranged fun does not end there, if you have a target running sideways, especially at a long distance, you must toggle off aim-assist and manually lead the target, as in, shoot in advance. Same goes for projectile/ray spells, such as fireballs, scorching rays, frost lances. Try to hit a moving target too far? Good luck with that, you need to have some serious skill.
What about dodging or defending, you say? Well, as discussed later in this post, the game uses a unique set of rules. You can manually dodge every ray/projectile, such as fireballs, arrows or scorching rays, but in melee the game does indeed stick to a tried and true “tank and spank” RPG method. You can dodge blows in melee, but it is not worth it if you have good defense. Instead, if you see a monster-specific special attack coming, such as a scorpion whipping it’s tail at you, you can hold down Shift. - Now, if you had a shield, you would be content with standing there with your shield up in a defensive stance, but without a wall of steel between you and the stinger, you really want to get out of there – thus we were given tumbling. Hit a movement key while holding down shift, and you will roll/leap out of the way, saving yourself from nasty poisons and what not.
Concerning gameplay mechanics/rules: With all said, DDO is not a pure twitch/hack and slash game, instead the game uses a complex, wonderful RPG ruleset on the background. For every attack you do, the game rolls a dice, adds modifiers and compares to target armor class. If you hit, then damage is rolled – the feedback is beautiful, smooth and clear. Attacking while moving? You receive penalties, but can train your character in this, to negate the penalties. Tumbling maneuvers depend on skill ranks in tumble, starting with sidestepping if you are encumbered to rolling and finally leaping out of the way.
Visuals: Sadly, you have only one set of animations (normal attack rotation) for each weapon class, but timing the blows can be very important. Example; Paladins with smites often leave their special attacks for the third or fourth slot in the rotation, giving them a bonus to hit and in case of dual wielding, a free “double smite”. And yes, I said dual wielding paladins. Any class can be built for a variety of roles/playstyles! From rogue/wizards who sling fireballs, roll around and then backstab to dwarf paladins dual-wielding axes.
Also, when we are at visuals, very few MMOs take the hardcore route with curses and other nasty effects. In your casual, normal MMO, blindness does nothing, but causes you to miss a couple of attacks and makes your character’s head be surrounded by magical dust. Here however, things are a bit different. If you are blinded, your screen goes completely black, save for the UI and friendly player names, so a friend can run up to you, and you can at the very least follow their name, thus having them lead you out. What about other spells such as glitterdust? Prepare for a screen full of bright yellow stuff what makes seeing everything a pain! Same goes for blizzards and ice storms. This, in my opinion is the perfect mix of immersion and “gameplay” from a third person perspective. Only other MMO I can think of what does this is Everquest 2. There you have race specific visions and stuff, which should also be present in DDO! I mean, such things are even included in Neverwinter Nights 2!
Now, nothing comes without flaws: DDO is an aged product. The graphics might not be for everyone's eye, but I find the armor design to be probably the best in fantasy MMOs. I mean, armors look like proper armor, at least until we go into epic stuffs.
Also, the monsters still seem to slide/skate from time to time, but if such minor details are unbearable behind everything else going on, the game just is not for you.
Some people might take trouble with the instancing, but I must confess that I enjoy instancing for questing and what not. It would make no sense to have a hundred people running back and forth in a cave, killing mobs what respawn (magically respawning mobs are an annoying concept, unless you explain such a phenomenon in game) and saving the same person x over and over again. I mean, that's just ridiculous, but when you add interesting dungeons filled with traps, secrets, hidden walls, puzzles and what not, you have the makings of a masterpiece (Just add friends, whiskey and communication!)
And while we're down here, lets not even talk about movement. Everything just felt clumsy in AoC.
But! I am not stomping AoC to the ground completely! It was impressive in many ways! Tortuga was probably the best starting zone we've ever seen in an MMO, and I believe that I can speak for many of us when I say that we have always wanted to step into the world of Conan. But... Lets not give too much positive feedback, I might actually stop whining about games if such went on! Due to their incompetence, Funcom should've never been given that project. They got a hell of a lot right, and much, much more wrong.
PS. Maybe this all comes down to the fact that I am tired with MMOs and want cooperative RPGs instead... And that as a D&D fan my views are totally biased in favour of a game what I've enjoyed for years since it's beta.

Funny, I felt totally opposite about it when I played. The melee didn't have near enough impact for me. I felt like I wasn't even hitting anything half the time. Add to that, the annoyingly monotonous "DDR" gameplay (even worse in fact, given there's no randomized element to it) and I couldn't get past 30 levels with the game.
Frankly, I'll never see how anyone stands the melee combat for any prolonged period of time. There's actually an equation on the official forum on how to make the "perfect" rotation, including timings for the end of attack animations and whatnot. Are you serious...? I guess if you want your gameplay experience to be an exercise in repetition and arithmetic, have at it. It's definitely not for me.

The impact of the hits together with the fatalities makes it fun to slay even the most common mobster..
Actually, I would argue that GW1 had the best combat of any game mentioned in this thread. Just due to the variety of builds, gameplay mechanics and all the little things you could do. It also felt most like an actual RPG instead of an MMO and even had an interesting story, even though the presentation was more than clumsy at it's worst times.
